Nintendo kicked off their E3 2014 Digital Press Event with a look at some cool new features in Super Smash Brothers Wii U. Reggie Fils-Aime and Satoru Iwata went into epic battle, but not using typical Smash Brother characters… they used Miis instead. This would mark the first Smash Brothers game where you can use your own created avatar to do your dirty bidding.

Nintendo revealed that each Mii can choose between three different character types, consisting of the following categories:

  • Brawlers — hand-to-hand specialist
  • Sword Fighters — melee specialist
  • Gunners — projectile specialist

And each class picks from a set of four special moves from twelve different categories for attacks and special abilities. That’s a total of 36 total special moves and abilities to choose from. And not only can your Miis fight other Miis, but also the in-game characters crafted by Nintendo such as Mario, Waluigi and a ton more.

Nintendo took that time to reveal a new method of spawning characters into your game world. Dubbed “Amiibos,” these figurines (which are sort of like those Skylander and Disney Infinity figurines used in those respective games) are equipped with NFC chips so that when you place one on a special area of the Wii U gamepad your character will be instantly and automatically transferred into the game.

These collectible figurines also store data about your characters, so stats like your fight record can travel with you if you’re heading to a friend’s house for some fun. You can read all about Amiibos right here.

Unfortunately Nintendo still didn’t have a release date to mention, though we’ve learned that Super Smash Brothers Wii U is still on for a holiday 2014 launch. In the same breath, Nintendo had to mention that they have suffered a short delay for the 3DS version from their original “summer 2014” window, but we at least got a pinpointed date now: October 3rd, 2014.

With that, they were eager to show off new gameplay from the handheld version, and it all seems to be coming along very nicely. We’ll be on the hunt for video footage to show you, but in the meantime take a look at various screenshots from the presser up above. Stay tuned as we look to bring you more from E3 2014!

This is just an awesome awesome inclusion. Perhaps some people won’t be too fussed about it. But I know I’m going Ghandi as a brawler…

    • WT Herrod Jr.

Ha, they already Fight Clubbed Abraham Lincoln in for you in the video

  • firedragonsage88

I’m now convinced Pac-Man will be in Smash. Does anyone remember this post?
This was posted right before the first three new comers were announced. Five out of six have turned out to be true so far. Clearly he knows something.

    • MerryBlind .

mmmhh… that is weirdly fishy indeed. Plus, he’s a doge, so that’s even more fishy… or is it doggy?

      • firedragonsage88

I don’t think that has anything to do with doge. It’s just a dog in a jacket

        • MerryBlind .

I know it’s not THE Doge, I was just joking. Nvm… I’ll go cry in a corner now.

    • rp17

He also predicted Palutena and (sorta) Greninja…

    • Ducked

I’m hoping there will be more announcements later today

  • MerryBlind .

LOL wow, that’s hilarious because so many people were asking for this, and so many ‘hardcore’ fans were saying it would be completely retarded.

    Well… there you go.

I personally thought it would be alright to include the Miis into Smash, and was actually expecting it to happen.

    • Santiago

if you think about it, it is an excellent way for ‘hardcore’ fans to even become more competitive.
      – they choose the right setup from hundreds of different combinations
      – as these things become about becoming famous, their Mii will be on screenshots and thus make it easier for people to become a fan
      – by storing the configuration of your character in a doll they can carry their configuration to any tournament or match and not lose time configuring the setup (or even keeping it conceiled from the people watching)
      – of course, they are NOT forced to use Miis, so it’s still up to them

I never thought I would be happy to see Miis in Smash Bros., but Sakurai managed to surprise me once again. As he said in his presentation, they didn’t simply “throw Miis in Smash Bros.”, instead they constructed a whole new of character that doesn’t even resemble a Mii anymore! That’s pure genius!

I’m actually happy he did it, although I wasn’t when the idea first came up. I get so hyped for this game on every announcement!

  • Edgar Tapia

This is not bad at all… STILL why the “f” did you promise the 3DS version for summer and a month later not honor your word? This is very upsetting. I so hyped that I couldn’t sleep last night waiting for a 3DS release date hoping I would get it before August because I’ll be starting my PhD in August. Now, you’ve crushed my dreams of getting this game before I start, since it will be impossible for me to play it during the semester.

Now, instead I’ll be only picking up the Wii U version and will not care at all for the 3DS version. I hope you make it up Nintendo because so far you have disappointed me so much. I know the game will be definitely worth the wait, I just can’t handle you guys promising release dates and change them only one month after.

    • Jon

A month delay… big whoop. Don’t get your pants dirty

  • Nighcrom

Personally, I would have preferred that time and resources be spent on other characters with actual personality/history and such… so Miis being included is kind of “meh” news to me.

Ah well. At least now when I bring my Wii U to parties, I can say to my friends, “Hey, you wanna see what would happen if your Miis got into a deathmatch?”

  • Ducked

Now its possible for this guy to be in Smash

  • Sdudyoy

I knew this was coming, I just didn’t know when.

  • kelvin

am i the only one that noticed the wii u version moved from winter 2014 to holiday 2014

    • J_Joestar

interesting, but does that push it forwards, backwards, or just a change to sound better?

    • Joel Cruz

your profile pic is gay out of every pokemon you chose that gayass bug and grass type

    • Jon

Winter and holiday are the same

  • Michael Lyons

i hope pac mans in this new smash bros game

  • Mitch Hall

Well then… I guess this means Reggie CAN be in Smash after all.

  • Jon

now… one thing that makes me wonder is they said Wii U… and any of the 3DS footage they showed, there were no Mii’s… so are Mii’s going to be exclusive to Wii U?

  • Darin

Do you think one of the games announced today might be a new Mega Man for the 3DS? Last month was heavily mega man emphasized on the eshop.
