You can officially call Super Smash Bros a “smash hit.” Teehee. The game went on sale for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan this past weekend, and the first sales figures for the title have been revealed. Nintendo is boasting a rate of 1 million units sold in its first 48 hours. Considering that’s all from availability in just one country and on a handheld platform, that’s quite amazing.

Super Smash Bros is poised to be the best release in the series yet. The roster is chock full of characters with 48 different fighters to choose from. This release also lets you build your own character based on three distinct fighting styles: a shooter, a brawler or a sword fighter. The Wii U version of the game will also feature compatibility with figurines that, when placed on the Wii U gamepad, can store information about fighting records and stats that can be transferred between consoles.

We’re sure Nintendo won’t have any issue meeting and exceeding those numbers once the game makes its worldwide debut early next month for the Nintendo 3DS. Europe and North America will get a crack at it on October 3rd, while our friends in Australia will have it a day later. The Wii U version of the game won’t be available until later in the 4th quarter of 2014.
