high capacity battery

Finally, Nintendo has released its own high capacity battery for the Wii U GamePad – at least, in the UK and Germany.

Since the Wii U’s release, consumers have been complaining about the GamePad’s mediocre battery life as well as the mediocre length of the charging cable. Well, Nintendo has listened – or they just want in on some of the profits third parties have been reaping; it’s hard to say – and today we can rejoice.

For  £24.99 (UK) or €34.94 (Germany), you can pre-order a Nintendo-made GamePad battery with significantly more juice. No more having to move after three measly hours of gaming!

Longer play sessions aside, it’s great to see Nintendo taking yet another step towards strengthening the appeal of their home console. Fortunately the Big N has also made it incredibly easy to get inside the GamePad.

Will you be picking up one of these longer-lasting batteries? Let us know in the comments!

Any idea how much weight difference it makes to the GamePad?

  • Schultz38

And people say America gets everything first.

We do get some things first, but Europe gets some things first too. It’s Australia and any other country/continent that usually miss out.

  • Ricardo de Lima Thomaz

Well, since the battery is not “Region Locked” you can buy the Asian version from Play-Asia:

Oh, and it is the Official Nintendo battery. Not a copy, it is the real product!

    • bobacdigital

34.90 + 15-26 in shipping .. not sure that is exactly worth it.

      • Ricardo de Lima Thomaz

It is not 15 to 26 of shipping. I guess it is 7,90 for a simple package.

You know what would be awesome? A Wiiu Range extender :d. My Gamepad disconnects before I can sit in my living room, I mean sure I could put the Wiiu in my living room, but I don’t want to do that.

    • Elem187

I would buy it… the last apartment I was living at I could use the gamepad in every room on the house… the new place I’m in, I can barely go into the next room. I would LOVE to get a range extender for it.

But then again, its my environment that keeps the gamepad from working very far…. my last place was ideal (it was also a bigger apartment then where I am at today), yet the range was almost 4x it is here.

I think its range is limited by interference.. .if you have neighbors that have portable land lines (the radio frequencies in a lot of these cordless phones are the same as the wireless chip) shorten the length it can work….. at my fathers house I noticed my Wii U would barely go 5 feet from the console.. I unplugged his two cordless phones in the house from the wall socket and booom range extended it almost 50 feet and through doors.

I would say its the #1 thing i want on the wii u…other than mario world 🙂

my gamepad cuts off before i can get to my bedroom

  • Ace

Yes, I will be picking this up…whenever it comes to the US. I hope it is soon as I am anticipating long play-times with WindWaker HD and Super Mario 3D World. PLEASE HURRY!!

  • WiiUisgaming

How many hours does this battery last?

    • Elem187

Double to almost 3 times the length of the old battery (depends on how bright your screen setting is and if you use rumble or not)

    • Zuxs13

should be about 50-100% longer battery life

  • Razo_E

I’ll be picking it up eventually, maybe after it drops $5 – $10.

    • Zuxs13

its an official Nintendo branded battery, it wont drop in price. at least not until the next Nintendo console comes out.

      • Elem187

Its cute seeing people claiming they wont buy a certain Nintendo product whether its a game or accessory until it drops in price.
Nintendo only drops the price of their console over time, their games and accessories remain high priced.. Look at the Wii Remote Plus. its been out for 5 years and its still $40.

  • Fred

how much heavier is it? I don’t really want a heavy gamepad I like the current weight and I don’t know if I want it to increase

    • C4

Don’t know. I’d estimate around 30 – 40 grams more based on other Li-ion batteries, but don’t quote me on it 🙂

  • Robbe Does

I don’t know why some people complain about the battery lifetime.
The indicator on my gamepad shows a full battery even after 2 to 3 hours of playing.

    • Zuxs13

i dont get it either. I get 5-6 hours easily of game play on mine.

    • Denvy

What’s worse is people complaining about short cable length? Really? That can be solved on the cheap.

      • Simon Stevens

really?, people complain about that?, that’s the longest charger lead I’ve ever seen lol

        • Denvy

Well, according to this “article” they do.

    • Chad Dodsworth

My battery only lasted for 3.5 hours (On a full charge) when I was playing WindWaker, it depends on the game and interaction. That low battery light is a good indication to get off my ass and get stuff done around the house lol!

      • I get 6ish hours on wind waker. Try lowering the brightness maybe?

    • AAAkabob

      I don’t know what you’re playing but I get roughly 3.5-4.5 hours

  • Zuxs13

huh funny i haven’t seen this one before. 3000mA

    • YogiGRB

damn, no shipping to holland :'( …. explicitly mentioned even

    • C4

From my experience ‘cheap’ 3000 isn’t better then ‘good’ 2500 mAh. At least for AA and AAA rechargeable batteries there are lemons. Can’t say if that’s the case here of course.

  • Josiah Parsons

    Of course!
Wait. Whenever it hits US shelves. Come on, Nintendo! Quick!

    • Zuxs13

      you can import one.

      • Josiah Parsons

        I’m not THAT eager 🙂

  • Hopefully this will be available in the US by the time I need a replacement battery

  • Joey

I’ve been waiting for this to come to Canada, i really want one…

  • Christopher Acuna

This needs to be in my life now! My Wind Waker HD runs are always cut short after 2 or 3 hours of play depending on how many times I decide to post funny pictures to the Miiverse. 😛

  • Jon Turner

If these ever come stateside, I’m getting it!

  • Jamal Brown

i hope these r not sold jus online

  • Wiiluigi

When is this coming stateside NOA?!?!?!?!!? Waiting for this since last MARCH! Geez!

  • devmiles

this is really customer unfriendly when you think of it. 35 euro’s is quite a lot of money… and what will you do with the old battery? not really eco friendly designed right? all these tiny things make my respect go down for nintendo. better put 60 euro’s up the console and have a blue ray drive and a high capacity battery… lame, just very lame…
