nintendo amiibo pikachu

Reggie Fils-Aime and Satoru Iwata opened a lot of eyes, pleased a lot of ears and piqued a lot of interests when they revealed Nintendo Amiibos earlier this week. They’re collectible figurines that can be used to beam characters into games like Super Smash Brothers and other upcoming titles from Nintendo. It’s not unlike the Disney Infinity and Skylanders movement that has caught fire as of late.

So what more do we know about these things three days later? For starters, we’ve gotten our first look at retail packaging for the little guys. It’s your standard stuff here: they’re housed in a nice, clear plastic chassis to show off every bit of Nintendo glory and goodness inside of them. This is also the first crop of characters confirmed to be offered as Amiibos. The list, along with Mario, now looks like this:

  • Mario
  • Kirby
  • Pit
  • Princess Peach
  • Villager
  • Pikachu

We imagine that nearly every characters in Super Smash Bros. Wii U will be well-represented as Amiibos by the time the game launches, though that still can’t be confirmed just yet. Wondering how much they’ll be at retail?

Fils-Aime revealed that they’ll be similar in pricing to Skylanders and Disney Infinity, so you can expect them to run you in the range of $10 to $15 (not bad, especially if you’re getting these things more to collect than for purposes of gameplay). Will you be picking up some Amiibo characters of your own? If so, let us know which ones with a quick comment below!

[Update]: We’ve seen seen that Samus, Donkey King, Link, Yoshi and the Wii Fit trainer have all been confirmed. As we said, we expect a lot more to come so don’t be surprised to see this list grow as the week goes on. [Thanks Scott!]

Can’t wait to train the hell out of my Pikachu.

    • Lilburrito

He shall be the best that no one ever was. To train him is my cause! And once he gets enough of experience he shall understand the power that’s inside.

    • Poopsy

Thanks for taking these photos WiiUDaily!!!

For all those thinking WiiUDaily is doing NADA at E3… ENJOY THESE PICTURES!!! You can’t get exclusives like these unless you are ON THE FLOOR.

      • You don’t have to reply to top comments to get your comment read. It’s okay.

        • Arthur Jarret

Says the guy that writes his own articles JUST so he can be the first to reply…

          • …I do that so I can get notified of replies easier when people want to talk to me.

and I don’t write my own articles JUST to be the first to reply to something. I actually care about what I write. The whole point of my articles is to interact with the community. How can I do that if I’m not active in the comment section?

            Think before you speak

          • jjbredesen

I think he was being sarcastic ๐Ÿ˜›

          • eh.

          • jjbredesen

Ok read the comment again, and perhaps it was a little offensive, but again i don’t think he actually meant anything with it.

Anyway, he is 1 against how ever many people read your articles and enjoy them witch i think are a lot ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • yeah. it was sarcastic and I feel silly ^w^ I just missed it. Internet needs a sarcasm font

          • jjbredesen

True…Or you people just need to learn how to use it ๐Ÿ˜›

          • Arthur Jarret

As jjbresden said, I was being sarcastic – didn’t mean any offense as you should know by now that I enjoy your articles and frequently join the discussion.

          • whoops!

The new icon confused me for a second, and I realized your name later ;P Sorry for the confusion. The comments here have been getting a little shady again, so I wasn’t too sure…

          • Arthur Jarret

It’s a great new icon though! Glad I finally took a second to make an avatar out of it – I drew it AGES ago on Colors!3D for 3DS.

The full pic is better, though:

Although… I do like it a lot better in 3D

          • oh wow that’s terrifying…

      • steveb944

Dude stop commenting on the top comment just to get it viewed. It’s highly annoying. You’re bringing down the quality of the comment section of your supposed beloved site.

      • jjbredesen

There are patriots and then there are you….I am guessing you are either trolling (witch your doing a bad job of) or well i donno what you are, but its really annoying that your are screaming at people and as Steveb944 pointed out, you are bringing down the quality of the comment section. No need to go all crazy ๐Ÿ˜›

And not to be that guy.., but WUD did not take those pictures it was taken by a Neogaf memeber ๐Ÿ˜›

      • lonewolf

Not really ive seen these on the digital event at thats the first place they showed them.

    • Arthur Jarret

Regarding pikachus – there were those NFC pokemon things that worked with Pokemon Rumble U, right? Are they Amiibos now, or completely incompatible?

  • jjbredesen

I think i will buy 1 or 2 for Smash, but not really to sure if i want to support the fact that this sort of is micro transactions, but i like the concept and i will use it for Smash that is for sure!

  • Justin Carlson

I’ve seen photos of a Samus amiibo so I’m pretty sure that one will be out with these or shortly after.

If they are $10 to $15 and they enhance multiple games that’s a price I’m OK with. I’m not yet sold on the Smash Bro’s functionality, but I’m very interested in seeing what they do for Mario Kart 8 and Yoshi’s Wooly World..

    • That guy who hates Spike

My bet is $7 for one.

  • Des

    I’m not interested in toys.

    • Bob Charlie

      But you read the article?

      • Des

I’m a Wii U owner, a gamer and a parent. So while I’m not interested in those figurines, my kids might be. So it’s good to know what they do and how much they will cost. But I wasn’t speaking for them when I wrote, “I’m not interested in toys.” Because that’s basically what they are. The features you get from them could have easily been served through toyless DLC’s but then I don’t care much for DLC’s either. But that’s just my own personal opinion/preference. I’m not here trying to bash other people who are into those things. To each their own.

        • Bob Charlie

I’m a parent too, and because my kid might want some of these that automatically makes me interested in them. It’s our money, right?
They are not just toys, or DLC, either. I doubt you could transfer over your fighter’s stats to another Wii U with just a toy or DLC.

          • Des

No, they’re not just toys. You are right about that. But you’re paying for that piece of plastic because the “unique” features they bring to the game (upgrading stats) could have been easily implemented in the game without them. But again, that’s just my opinion. As for my kids, if they want them, I’ll more than likely buy it for them but I personally have no use for them.

Edit: You’re right about being able to take those figures to a friends house to play with your own stats. But I, nor my kids, have friends who own a Wii U. So it’s a feature “WE” wouldn’t even use. Even if “WE” had friends with a Wii U, how often would that even happen? Probably once in a blue moon. I guess if you have neighbors you game with regularly then okay, neat feature.

          • Bob Charlie

Well, damnit, get some friends who own a Wii U! ๐Ÿ˜‰
Yeah, I didn’t know anyone with a Wii U until a week ago and I’ve had mine since launch.

          • Des

Ha ha ha! I’m trying to make a few converts but they’re not convinced just yet. I’m gonna pick up Mario Kart 8 soon. If that game plus our copies of Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and New Super Mario Bros U doesn’t convince them then nothing will. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • Bob Charlie

Since you have kids, try out Lego City Undercover. One of the most underrated Wii U games. It’s a great game to show off what the Gamepad is capable of and why it separates the U from PS4 and Xbone.

          • Des

Own it. My kids are a big fan of the Lego series. Especially the one’s with superheroes. We own Lego Marvel Superheroes (Wii U) and will be getting Lego Batman 3 (Wii U) when it’s released. The other two Lego Batman games we own on the PS3. I try to buy all of my multiplatform games on the Wii U to support the console but it’s tough because developers skimp out on some of the DLC’s. While I could care less, the kids are suckers for getting new costumes and extra stuff for their games. Sometimes they wish I would just buy the the PS3 version when those DLC’s aren’t available on the Wii U. It doesn’t bother me personally because I remember a time when there were no DLC’s in consoles and all of the “extras” were included in the game (unlockables). So I refuse to pay for cheap DLC’s like new costumes. However, bigger DLC’s like New Super Luigi U, that extends the gameplay, adds new levels, perhaps the storyline or gameplay and tries something new, are always welcome.

  • Capt. Smoker

I like this, not so much the gimmick of it all, but it gives me something worth collecting like pokemon rumble u did, although to be fair, not being able to gain exp unless you use a figure really sucked and it was an obvious milking strategy, never the less I love my mew figure, and I really want Princess Peach and Kirby!

  • YoG99

Did anyone besides me see that the packaging lack the “Wii U” or “3DS” branding. My own personal thought about it is those amiibos are intended to last with future consoles and/or future concepts. Actually, it might be the core of something else in the future: It is a branding by itself.

    • steveb944

This is their QOL- quality of life project. They’re just starting with pleasing long time fans QOL first. /s

      • jjbredesen

Nope, this is not there QOL project ๐Ÿ˜‰ QOL stands for Quality of Life, and i don’t see how spending $15 on a plastic toy is going to improve your life, nor your economy, the QOL project will be completely separate from the gaming site of Nintendo.

        • steveb944

I’ve been waiting for an official Link toy to collect for over 2 decades, my life shall soon be complete. LOL. Yeah I know QOL will be completely separate and we’ll probably see it on fitness and home magazines, hence my /sarcasm

    • Michael Hancock

      You’re intelligent.

    • Matteo Ferrazzi

the figures will work on both wii u and 3ds. a peripheral is being released for the 3ds to read them.

  • That guy who hates Spike

    Just wondering.
Will their tropheys look like the Amiibo as well?
    Does anyone know that?

    Another question:
Will skinds like Female Villager, Male Wii Fit Trainer and Wireframe Mac get one?

  • WiiUisgaming

    I will buy Kirby!!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • That guy who hates Spike

Imagine how detailed the Mr. Game and Watch Amiibo will be.

    • It’s just a piece of paper XD

  • ZeldaFan83

Well at least it was confirmed that the figures won’t include or be used for the purpose of unlocking characters, content or DLC. So the figures aren’t required to play any game.

  • Jon

again… project steam…. they are showing gameplay footage of it now on the Treehouse Live stream

  • Sycamore

What if Ganondorf from the windwaker limited edition is secretly an Amiibo ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    • jjbredesen

      And the blueshell from MK8?

      Crack that b*tch open!

  • bistricky

I would imagine that I would get a few of them …. but why do I think, that it won’t be long before I buy them all. Cheers ๐Ÿ˜€

  • jjbredesen

Of topic, but just found this hilarious article in the times ๐Ÿ˜€

    • hahahero

    • InterTreble

The Ultimate Unique Console at last!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Josiah Parsons

      I would totally buy it.

      • jjbredesen

        Me to!

  • LevenThumps

$10 to $15 seems like a reasonable price, considering they are planned to work with multiple games.

  • Scott Duperree

Don’t forget: Samus, Link, Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Wii Fit Trainer – who were all revealed as Amiibo in that Bill Trinen video.

    • Marcel Kleine

Ikr. These guys aren’t up to date at all, omg.

    • rp17

To be fair, maybe Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Link, Yoshi, and Marth are in the second wave. (Marth can be seen in the Kirby picture up top)

  • Ernie Sanguyo

I want to collect them all ๐Ÿ™‚ but keep it sealed for collection

    • JB

That’s why I’m budgeting for two each.. ๐Ÿ˜›

      • Ernie Sanguyo

I guess your right I might do same as well.

  • JB

Two of each, please (one for collecting, one for playing) Though no Link in the fist batch? Poppycock!

    • Dark Link

  • CEObrainz

This in a way gives you a training partner, which is a brilliant idea. I can use my figure to practice for competitive play as well as see if it plays effective against my friends.

  • TheSkeletonMan939 .

Woah, ten bucks? Much cheaper than I initially thought.

  • JudyDMaddox

Itโ€™s not unlike the Disney Infinity and Skylanders movement that has caught fire as of late. http://0rz.tw/9BIIY

  • Chromtendo

Now you can train your Pokรฉmon in real life! LOL XD

I like the idea. I love the figurines (I collect PVC figurines of Anime and Gaming)
This is idea of Nintendo is just brillant imo. I will buy all of my favorite Characters at once (but surely not Peach :D).
Doesn’t matter if I will use them in a game or not. I just want the figurines *-*

  • Einscengi

I’ll probably end up buying most of them. For the purposes of Smash Bros, I’ll train Marth quite a bit. And probably Pit too.

  • Jeffery02

Once it is confirmed, then my goal will be the Luigi Amiibo! No one screws with him! Just look at Mario Kart 8. ๐Ÿ˜›

  • swic11

    Bring on Link!!

  • I’ll pick up Samus, Link, Zelda and Pit for sure as soon as they become available.

  • bistricky

Appears that all the first group of amiibo characters also appear on the box cover of “Smash Bros. for Wii U” ….. smart marketing Nintendo. Cheers ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Petri

So, was it just me, or did they say they were going to work with Disney and Activision to make Amiibos work with their respective games as well?

    • lonewolf

I think they said that they wont be able to work with those games as they use different tehnology altogether.

      • Petri

        I dont really know.
But adding Amiibos to a game is just a lines of code.
Skylanders is using NFC, Disney Infinity uses some kind of pad I think, but Wii U gamepad can work as substitute to that pad.
This could be a strong selling point for Nintendo.
Even though I’m not excited for these toy games, deal with disney and/or activision could help them.

    • jjbredesen

I still don’t support buying toys for games ๐Ÿ˜›

      • I do

        • jjbredesen

I respect your opinion, but what is the point of buying toys for your games? Just curious why you would want them?

          • glad you asked!

            1. I’ve always been a huge collector, but never really got into any action figure series, because that was all they were. figures that sat on your shelf. With toys to life games, these figures gain much more meaning and purpose than they had before. Not only are they fun to collect, you can actually play with them, and watch them come to life.

            2. Skylanders character design is amazing, and you really feel like you get a full 10 dollars worth of work into each one. They’re not just reskins. Each one has a personality, professional voice actor/actress (Tara Strong comes to mind) and very unique ways to play.

            3. Easy to play with kids if you have them

            4. Playing the trading/selling market is fun too. Seeing a super rare figure in stores, buying it, then flipping it for profit on ebay is really fun, (Some variants go for upwards of 50 and even 100 dollars. Variants are figures that have unique coloring or were a special event release) finding a great deal on a rare figure as well too!

          • jjbredesen

Ah, well that does in my eyes seem like a fun thing to do, if your in to it, and i could consider collecting them, and i also want to buy one for games such as smash if they have a greater meaning than just being a figure, and when it comes to skylanders and Amiibo i think they do, so i agree with you on that!

What i don’t like is if they become a sort of indirect micro-transaction, so depending and how they are used i will either support them, or hate them xD

Think you understand what I mean ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • yup!

I dunno. it’s technically a microtransaction, but at least it’s not just a download. you actually get something to hold and display as well

          • jjbredesen

Yeah, they are nice to have, and i think i will enjoy having them, just as long as i don’t have to be forced to buy 10 per game i will be happy ๐Ÿ˜€

          • sounds like you’re not forced to buy them at all, which is the switch from Amiibo to Skylanders

          • jjbredesen

Yup! also while where on the Disqus subject, i have not been able to upvote posts since my NOA account was banned, so i am not being rude and not upvoting comments, i simply can’t :/

          • Arthur Jarret

Not upvoting comments is rude? I just don’t bother most of the time – I enjoy the conversation enough without giving or receiving arbitrary tokens of approval

          • jjbredesen

Yeah, i don’t care about them, but if someone makes a good point i will give them an upvote, or if i like what they have said etc.

  • steveb944

WHERE IS LINK!?!? I may have to settle for Pit if he doesn’t release in time for my Smash purchase.

  • rp17

So are Yoshi, WFT, Fox, Zelda, Samus, Marth, and Donkey Kong coming later?

  • Lecrazy

Too expensive for my taste. ๐Ÿ™

  • Lecrazy

    $10 x 50 characters = $500.

    • jjbredesen

Don’t think there will be 50 characters per game xD, and you can use the same on different games, unless your going to collect them i don’t think you will ever end up buying more than 10 per generation.

      • Lecrazy

Assuming they’ll all be available for Smash, 50 isn’t unreasonable, and that’s no counting characters from other games (Lucina, Tom Nook, Isabelle…).

      • Virus6

They already said they’ll make an Amiibo for each Smash character, so if you want to collect them for Smash, it’s gonna get pricy

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

Will Mega Man, Pac Man and Sonic The Hedgehog also have an Amiibo Figure?

  • Kobe

I noticed they say “Super Smash Bros.” on them. That makes me a little mad. They said that we will be able to use them for different games but I don’t want to have two different Mario’s (the smash bros one and the regular one). I’m only 13 and I don’t realy want to spend that much, but I probably will anyways

    • Stephen Severino

Their plan is to release different series of Amiibo. The first wave is focused on Smash, but still works with other games. It’s more about the appearance of them, so these will ‘look’ like their Smash representations. But they all function as Amiibo across all compatible games, so don’t worry, your money gets you a full fledged Amiibo.

  • Nielsus6

    Donkey King!! ^>^

  • theshoe124

    Super Smash Bros, Pokemon Edition.

I think this is just Nintendo’s entrance into the micro-transaction market. Selling additional items and such (in this case, entire features) through micro-transactions is ultimately a bad thing, as the full prices of games become much more expensive than 60/70 dollars. I think the game play experience of having AI companions to train is cool, but I think it is greedy to sell it.

    • lonewolf

You dont need to buy a them if you dont want.

  • FlashFan207

As long as these figs don’t take the place of any of the characters that are featured in-game or the in-game characters are not playable until the figs are purchased, then I am in. But if Nintendo somehow limits usable characters unless we front the cash to buy a fig and unlock them in-game then I will be boycotting this effort altogether.

    • Willie Crespo

There will be figures of every character in the full roster. But like Sakurai said at the Roundtable: “You don’t need to get them at all, or you can just focus on the ones you like.”

  • Virus6

To be fair, a lot of original Skylanders were around 6-7 bucks. It was when they came out with the larger Giants and the more complex Trap Team figures that they went in the 10-15 dollar range. I’d guess these could easily be under 10 bucks

  • Screamin Mime

They should package them in little red balls…

  • FutureFox

This is great if they ever get stronger third-party gaming support. I’ve already run into the situation where I play a game and build up a character but can’t import my character over to another console.

At least potentially I can build say an RPG character at home, then on the bus on my 3DS assuming the same game is available (as the 3DS will have an Amiibo adapter as well), then take the it to my friend’s house. Its basically the memory card for individual game character data which is great.

  • BJ

Think if they collaborated and made these compatible for like Call of Duty or something. That would be AWESOME!

    • Matteo Ferrazzi

      I’m sorry what?

  • Spaniard0069

Nintendo should use amiibos as an opportunity to introduce dlc characters, especially from third party publishers. I would definitely buy a Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden) or a Simon Belmont (Castlevania) figure. The list can go on for days. What third party publisher wouldn’t want one of their franchise characters in Super Smash Bros? That would also allow these publishers to gauge interest in releasing a game on the Wii U based off of the amiibos sale numbers.

  • I am Error.

10 sounds fair. 15 really depends on the paint job quality. I import figmas for a reason =)

  • Arthur Jarret

Oh dear, I’m going to have to buy each figurine twice: because the packing is just too gorgeous to open – but I still want to use each figurine.

  • Fredrik Olsen

Hoping Dry Bones will be available!
    And gonna get Fox! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Willie Crespo

Like Sakurai said at the rountable: “You don’t need to get them at all, or you can just focus on the ones you like.”

  • X3Charlie

10 bucks is the highest I’d go, would prefer $5 though

  • discuss

What do I do with these things?

  • TheGuyWhoLovesAishaFromElsword

I won’t mind getting Peach since she is my favorite to use in Melee and Brawl and she probably will for this Smash as well.

  • 00EpicGamer00

I think the Smash Bros Wii U bundle thing should come with maybe one of these figures. It’d be a random figure. Oh, by the way, where’s Bowser? It looks like every veteran character has a figure but Bowser. ๐Ÿ™

  • C4

    That Kirby looks delicious.

  • GmailIsDown

i am so getting these amigos
