Miyamoto Wii uIn a recent interview with European game magazine GameReactor, Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto shared some thoughts on the upcoming Wii U console, online multiplayer, and even the upcoming Zelda Wii U game.

Miyamoto said that Nintendo doesn’t believe they “fell behind” on online multiplayer, and that now is the correct time for Nintendo to go online. Nintendo has been criticized for years for not having a proper online infrastructure and their lack of focus on online gaming. Most of the key first party Nintendo Wii U games like New Super Mario Bros U, Nintendo Land, and Pikmin 3, do not feature online multiplayer.

He also mentioned that the team at Retro Studios could work on a Zelda game, but the story and gameplay design would still be done in Japan. Retro Studios has been rumored to be working on a Wii U Metroid game for a while now.

Finally, Miyamoto commented on the new iPad mini, saying that its screen size (7.9″) is an indication that Nintendo made the right decision with the GamePad screen size and design. The GamePad features a 6.2 inch touchscreen, which does not support multitouch, but has many other advanced features.

I just can’t wait for a Smash Bros for the Wii U, and be able to communicate with your opponents! 😀 it’ll just be heaven for every Nintendo fan 😀

    • Lusunup

hopefully im not the only one but For smash bros i prefer texting then using a mic its more fun 🙂

      • Berieanne

        • Ronny Lee 19881

Because it is easier to ignore the ragers. Seeing the nonsense isn’t as annoying as hearing it yelled through a head set.

          • Anubis

How about if you talk into the mic, it wrights it in text. That might work, either way that game is going to be awesome!

          • Anubis

          • Alienfish

That’s what muting is for. Get rid of the annoyance once and for all.

        • Joesatmoes

yeah- texting lets someone kill u while ur texting, while talking allows u to talk AND play

          • Lusunup

clearly you never played brawl before you text in a chat room not when your fighting and you can add little text when you taunt and it gives more chuckles then when you use a mic and some people cant multi-task while there fighting like for instants me

          • PACMAN

It should be changeable depending on if your playing with a friend or idiots online. Also the game your playing. I would not want to stop in the middle of a super smash fight to type a message.

        • Lusunup

          Why not?

          • Amherst

Because, like it has been on 360 and PS3 for the last 6+ years, you could simply mute the whiners. Let’s not encourage Nintendo to make stupid decisions such as text when they’ve already been well behind the other two big companies in gaming.

Had to laugh at the “clearly you never played Brawl” comment. Because four preset messages certainly has the same potential for communication then simply speaking. You know, that thing that’s been around for a while now.

          • NintendoGamer

I have top agree with Amherst. This is 2012. This may have work in 2007 or 2008, but not now.

    • Nko Sekirei

im so hoping retro studios is working on metroid prime 4 can wait

      • Draco Breach

The Prime Trilogy is over. Retro is happy with it. Nintendo is happy with it. They finished what they set out to do, and story creep did not occur.

If Retro is working on a Metroid title, I hope they go for the Project:Dread teased at during the Prime Trilogy.

        • Atstyle

Project: Dread is fan made… that would suck to have such potential wasted on a 2D metroid. Since its retro i’m pretty sure it’s metroid prime 4.

Reasonning behind it is that when they released metroid prime trilogy they stated that if fan wanted a sequel they would be leaning toward making one.
And since metroid prime 3 100% ending shows us a cliffhnager i’m sure it will end up leading to Prime 4 that they teased out for so long.

          • Draco Breach

            I’ll be more specific then.

In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, players can inspect a terminal in the Metroid Breeding Zone of the Space Pirate Homeworld that states, “Experiement status report update: Metroid Project ‘Dread’ is nearing final stages of completion.”

The cliffhanger at the end could be hinting at any number of things, including Metroid Prime 4, Project:Dread, or Metroid Fusion. As Nintendo and Retro Studios have flat out said that the Prime Trilogy is a trilogy, I doubt a number 4 cropping up. I don’t completely discount it. I simply doubt it.

As Sakamoto even confirmed the existence of the Project:Dread (E3 2009), I have no doubt that some team in Nintendo HQ storyboarded the idea at some point – maybe even started into conceptualization.

I will conclude that, yes, Retro said they’d like to continue the story of the Prime Trilogy. They want to explore more of the Metroid universe and expand on Samus’ unique powers. They’ve expressed an interest in a multiplayer game, so they may well have been granted their wish with Nintendo Network and the blessing to create a new game.

        • BananaPwnz

The metriod Wii u game has a ton of potential and awesome opportunities with the enhanced graphics and touch screen controller compatibilities. I cant wait how its going to look and be!

          • Alienfish

Hang on a second, I think you have some glitter in your eye.

        • Nko Sekirei

no it isnt douchebag they left it wide open after the third one ended with a ship chasing after samus it means dark samus isnt dead

        • Nko Sekirei

they said they were taking a break and they didnt say they were done with the prime series and besides they left a huge cliffhanger at the end of prime 3 and most of us know dark samus aint dead and i still think for the next one they should have dark samus be samus rival instead of being a final boss i rather fight mother brain then dark samus that be epic

      • Captain Potato

It must be said that a Metroid game without “Metroids” shouldn’t be called Metroid! I love the series from NES to Wii, but if you no longer have the Metroids….why continue calling it Metroid? I suggest Retro work on a prequel to the original NES story explaining how she got to arrive on planet Zebes! And keep the Metroids alive! I mean…Zelda is still reincarnated with every new game that is created, could you imagine if she was never heard of after the second game and everyone kept referring to that game as “Zelda” when the princess’ name is “Gurtrude”? Just saying…

        • Alienfish

It would be easy to write in Metroids for a new game. Just say that they originated from another galaxy and that they’re actually intelligent beings who have mastered space travel. The more evolved Metroids from the other galaxy find out that Samus is exterminating their species thereby pissing them off and causing them to invade the Samus’ region of space, again forcing her into battle to somehow force them out.

          • Draco Breach

Not nearly as easy as you think, as your idea requires a retcon. However, there are solutions based on the origin of the metroid species.

The Chozo created the Metroids, and they created Mother Brain to control them. They were mainly created to deal with the X Parasite, but certain media – the manga series – seems to indicate [at least some] Chozo saw potential beyond that.

As they are a genetic experiment, any brave explorer of Chozo ruins should be able to use the left over research data to simply replicate the experiments.

It is not impossible to imagine some experimentation leading to metroids with some modicum of intelligence – maybe somebody stupidly decides to splice Mother Brain to Metroids. I know I’d Dread that.

^The last line is a bad, bad, bad stealth joke that I must admit to, and it is only rumor at best.

        • tubagodd

So majora’s mask wasn’t a legit zelda game?

    • 0soul

Lmao I can imagine people yelling “ledge guarder, spammer” and other sh#t like that. Can’t wait for this games I hope that they make good character choices.

      • 0soul

      • JumpMan

they BETTER not put any Namco/Bandai characters in it. gimme Nintendo and nuthin’ else!

    • GANO

I just hope smash bros online works this time. The first was hopelessly affected by lag down under. Was unplayable online as a result, good thing the off line was as good s always.

      • mcbaard

        lag at whichever continent..

  • Master Awesomeness

C’mon, tell us more about what you are working on! More Zelda, Metroid, and what about smash bros., you said you were working on it! What about Star Fox, and Mario Kart and a 3D Mario game!

You are teasing us too much!

    • td,y,i,.

i KNOW! Couldn’t Nintendo release a trailer or at least some concept art.

    • Kirbymon123

actually I think it was Masahiro Sakurai (pretty sure that’s spelled right) that was working on the smash bros u, like he always did.

    • Anubis

There’s suppose to be a new 3d mario game comming out for the Wii U in 2013

      • Marioravesto3d

Super mario galaxy 3 ? or I do hope so 30 years of playing computer games the galaxy games are some of the best have played.

  • NintendoMan :D

It would be cool if you could play iPad and iPad mini apps on the Gamepad since screen sizes are relatively the same. I can’t wait until a Zelda Wii U game comes out, even though I haven’t played a lot of Zelda games. Zelda would look BEAUTIFULY AMAZING on Wii U. 😀

    • Draco Breach

Without multitouch, some apps or functionality simply won’t work. The Wii U GamePad is not designed to compete with the ultra-portability of the iPad. The 3DS is not designed to compete with the iPad. While they share some market, the Wii U and 3DS are more designed with gamers in mind – buttons, stability, and zero interference.

When you play a game on a console – home or portable, the system dedicates almost all resources to the game. When you play a game on a tablet or phone, the OS has to divide system resources to maintain a lot of background functionality.

While the Wii U and 3DS are not designed to compete with the iPad, they have a lot of market overlap. If somebody wants more than a pick-up-and-go game, they have a dedicated console.

Hence, Angry Birds rather epic fail on consoles.

  • Shankovich

If the next Zelda is going to have Skyward’s art style, Retro isn’t working on it for sure lol. You don’t need UE3 engine experienced employees for that.

    • Ronny Lee 19881

This got 3 likes… seriously? With the extra horse power they could make the Skyward Sword style look gorgeous. You do understand it is more than just upscale-ing SS to 1080P right?

      • Shankovich

I do understand, I’m pretty tech savvy (you can read my thread in the forums about technical details of the Wii U lol).

But the best they could go with that art style is insane texture resolution and extra colours through higher bitrate. If they add tessalation, do DX10 level lighting, etc. that’ll ruin the style. They also can’t do much with the base models because again, it’ll ruin the style. Retro doesn’t roll like that, they squeeze every last drop out of the features of a GPU chip…seriously, Metroid Prime still looks decent.

    • Draco Breach

If the execs in Japan license Legend of Zelda to Retro, they set terms and conditions. Not Retro.

Trust me, Retro can make any art style work. If Nintendo gives Retro carte blanche on art style, I would never discount Skyward Sword. It is a gorgeous art style.

      • Shankovich

It is! I’m just saying Retro could do so much more. Retro is Nintendo’s main weapon to show the industry what the Wii U can do, and Skyward’s art style just doesn’t have the headroom for high profile features.

Skyward had an amazing art style, and so did Twilight, but Twilight’s was more impressive on a technical side, while Skward’s was more for the purely artistic side. If we want the Wii U to show it’s teeth, Retro has to be given the keys to develop a game with technically impressive visuals. And I really think they’re making a Star Fox; I mean, aside from Metroid, it has serious potential to do that.

        • Draco Breach

I haven’t done visual art in ages, and I’ve never cared for graphical art design. I’m always amazed by what certain developers can do with modeling and textures. I’m more interested in the software side – programming, artificial intelligence, et cetera.

Retro Studios has a very well balanced team. They’ve proven they can adapt to any genre, in my humble opinion. By swiftly shifting gears between Metroid and Donkey Kong, they proved just how adept they are.

I’d much prefer Retro be given carte blanche on just about everything. If they are working on Legend of Zelda, I want the storyboarding done by the Japanese team. Then again, Nintendo tends to want storyboarding done on their end.

I was stunned by the direction Retro took Metroid Prime. It was a stellar mix of storyboarding from the Japan offices and carte blanche by Retro.

As for what they’re up to, I was giving equal odds to Metroid and Star Fox. With the latest comments from a very well respected Nintendo exec, I’m also giving equal odds to the Legend of Zelda.

  • !!!!!!!!

Holy Crap this just got real thank glob i got my wii u preordered already

My anticipation just went OVER 9000!

    • Srpg2ishere

I know right?! I just played rayman legend today too at gamestop! But I played it for 11 minutes. And then I played it again. Which makes 22 minutes of awesomeness god I definitely want rayman legends now!!!!!

      • Master of Awesomeness

It’s only awesomeness when i do it. So now, you offended me.

    • Waddifat

Hey I just played it today also! I played with my bro & we both thought it was amazing. I cannot wait anymore I want my Wii U now!!!

  • Ledreppe

What, is Miyamoto admitting that the Wii U is in competition with the iPad mini now? Because before Nintendo said the game pad was ‘t to be compared with the iPad, it was its own ‘thing’.

    • eli

oh noooo this is the ipad mini 😉

  • Wozaha

I honestly do not know why the Gamepad doesn’t feature a multitouch screen. Can anyone give me their honest opinion? :S

    • RoboticLink

The gamepad already costs a fortune to make and using a multitouch screen would not make it cheaper to create.

    • olimar

That would make the console a lot more expensive to produce and consequently a lot more expensive for the customers. So yeah, most people think multitouch screens are cheap, but they’re not. :/

    • Grodus

To save $50 on your system, since Nintendo decided they want a multiple of 50 for their price tag. (Or the pounds/euros that always get multiplied by, if you live there.) I’m serious though, cost. And possibly to cram all the hardware in.

      • Lord Carlisle

Besides, do we really need a multi-touch screen? Single touch should work just fine.

        • Nintenlord

Yea cause the vita proved it was great (sarcasm)

          • Contracode

            No the ds did.

    • OmegaRed

He mentions it for the fact consumers are primed for a system like this…not that its direct competition…it does compete on some level in the casual market though..

    • Derp

Maybe Nintendo and Apple would implement the Ipad Mini into the Wii U later on down its lifespan?

Or he is just complimenting the Ipad mini’s size and design?

    • eli

i’m positive that that isn’t a number but whatever

I wait so long to hear him talk about the iPad mini, yeah, very good to hear him talk… lol

  • TheUNation

I wonder what Retro Studios would be designing in an upcoming Wii U title for The Legend of Zelda franchise as well the rumor of the development team from the state of Texas in creating a graphics engine for the U.

    • Joesatmoes

hopefully just as beautiful as Skyward Sword. Maybe they might even use the same artstyle. But while the artstyle in SS was amazing, I would like something new

      • Roedburn

How about Legend of Zelda in an art style like Kirby’s Epic Yarn. XD

        No, I am not serious.

        • Draco Breach

Kirby is silly and fanciful enough to pull it off… I’m not sure Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf have the flightiness to do the same.

      • BubbleMan v2

Why not just change the art style every couple of games? It’s worked before for them, and shows “Yeah, we’re that good. We can make a game look like whatever, and it will still be epic.” Not something many other developers can say about an IP.

Shigeru Miyamoto is the best game designer ever!

  • Cugno the Swiss

I might sound weird once more but… I hope that the game Retro is working on isn’t Metroid… The Metroid Prime trilogy shines with its own light, now it’s time for Retro to show us that they can do other amazing games!
I wouldn’t complain if it were Metroid though, I never really got into Prime, but I can always begin now.

  • Icanseeu

“Miyamoto said that Nintendo doesn’t believe they “fell behind” on online multiplayer,”

Can I have some of what he’s smoking?

    • Nin_Stream

He means they have always had online when everyone else did to. While it wasn’t good online Nintendo has had Online just as long as everyone else.

  • Srpg2ishere

Miyamoto if I give you a pizza, will you give me a free deluxe wii u?
    Miyamoto: Yes.
    Me: AAAHHH!!!!!

      • NintendoMan :D

        • Nintendude

I think you replied to the wrong person.

  • Shane

Coo coo. Ya Nintendo always has the best single player games. The new Smash Bros. will be the best one ever… ’til then, I guess I’ll be playing PS All-Stars beta, and maybe the full game when it comes out. It plays alot like Smash Bros., and it’s interesting to see the PS “violent” characters fight Parrapa the rappa. The clown from Twisted metal makes me think of Mario, Kratos like Link, Sly like Pikachu, fat princess is a “nice” version of Samus., etc… haha. I’ve just been thinking about it since they play alot alike.

    • Shane

Why did I get thumbed down? I really saw connections between those games. No doubt Nintendo did it first, but the Playstation version has interesting themes and stuff. I don’t have any other system right now, so I got to play something, right? I just don’t like the animations that lead to the attacks because it calls for having to make a move in advance, and that can screw up the whole combo and defense chains. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the best, but until then, PS All-Stars has a pretty fun alternative, that has online play that works. If SSBB, would have had working online as good as Mario-Kart, I would be on there all day. SSBB online didn’t even work when I played friends that had good working internet connections like me, that I put FC in for. Not trying to be an ass, but I really wanted SSBB to have good online, and it kind of didn’t work…

There is only one thing that they need for Link to do in his next title; the ability to JUMP! Who doesn’t want to have the ability to do one of Ike’s uppercut things, but with Link. Plus, the original idea was created by Nintendo anyway!

P.S. If you could, bring back what franchises you can to life, like Mother.

  • WarioForever

I don’t like that Retro studios is working on New Legend of Zelda.
Cause it will be very different from other Zelda games.
They are skilled making the Metroid but not Zelda, Nintendo EAD Group 3 should make new Zelda title.
I’m just saying that I have a bad feeling about this…

    • Draco Breach

Donkey Kong Country Returns proved the versatility of Retro Studios.

      • WarioForever

        I know, but… oh well, will see…

    • xGustafx

they are not making a zelda game, the interview its in spanish, so they put a rough translation that is all wrong, miyamoto-sama said that Retro has the capacity to make a Zelda game, just that, they can, but they won’t because a Zelda game is, well a fucking Zelda game, he also said that he prefer to give Titles to Retro where they can have more liberties, and less dependable on Nintendo

      • WarioForever

        So, that’s good news, right?

    • Nin_Stream

Retro isn’t making Zelda. Retro is all about reviving Nintendo games that got left behind and such. Their mystery game is Starfox HD. They have said its something everyone wants us to make they also said their will be barrel rolling. If its not Starfox then it must be Donkey Kong since nothing else involves barrel rolling.

Nintendo can believe what they like, the fact is that they have been behind regarding online but this looks to be amended with wii u. Having said that, online cod, bw2 and smash bros on wii is still great fun and I am grateful for the wii having these online games.

METROID needs it’s own game, and Nintendo could go either way with it — A Prime 4, or a sequel to Other M, or not even a sequel but a more story driven Metroid like Other M. Either way, I will buy it. But overall, I think we’re all leaning towards the first person style that the Prime Series offered, which would be more effective on the Wii U. But when it comes to producing a new metroid game in general, the problem is coming up with new upgrades, beams and suits. I look back at all the games dating back from the original on NES, and I can’t think of incorporating a new beam that would be crucial to the game such as the ice beam. Here’s the list:

    Long Beam
    Ice Beam
    Wave Beam
    Charge Beam
    Grapple Beam
    Plasma Beam
    Hyper Beam
    Dark Beam
    Light Beam
    Diffusion Beam

They all have their specific uses that are key to advancing in a metroid game. For example, in Super Metroid, the Hyper Beam is the only weapon that will finish off Mother Brain. The only real need for the plasma beam is to take out the Chozo Statue in Ridley’s lair. Obviously the wave beam goes through walls, and the ice beam is used to freeze enemies and use them as platfroms. Can anyone think of a new beam(s) to introduce to a new metroid game instead of continuously retreating to the old ones?

    Suits, the main five are:

    Power suit – protection

Varia suit – protection from heat intense atmosphere

Gravity suit – move through water. NOTE: In other M, this is the last item we get which was quite a surprise and featured protection from the suction of space. That could play a roll in a new metroid game.

Phazon suit – protection from phazon infested environments

Dark suit – protection from poisonous/hazardous atmosphere

Now I can’t even think of a new suit off the top of my head. The Chozo suit would be cliche and have no use even though it sounds cool. But when it comes to Zelda, it’s much easier to come up with new tools for Link. Metroid, it’s a challenge.
