According to the newest issue of Famitsu in which Masahiro Sakurai discusses internal development quips for the Super Smash Bros. series, it was originally Shigeru Miyamoto’s idea to see Pac-Man in the brawler. Sakurai says Miyamoto came to him and asked him about Pac-Man as a guest character, but at the time Sakurai felt that it was too far-fetched as Pac-Man hadn’t been given a 3D form outside of advertising.

During development of Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo approached me and asked, ‘Can’t we have Pac-Man as a guest character?’ At the time, imagining the image of Pac-Man and his incomplete pizza shape, I thought to myself, ‘Hmmm… That’s a little too farfetched.

While Pac-Man is a new addition for Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS, he almost made his debut in Brawl.

  • Jon

I didn’t want Pac-man in Brawl… I don’t even want him in Smash Bros U. lol He better not have take Ganondorf’s or Capt. Falcon’s spot.

    • Virus6

They are going to have hidden characters. They do it every release. Ganondorf, Ness, Captain Falcon, Mr. G&W, Jigglypuff, Falco (maybe) and probably 2 or 3 newcomers will all be hidden. Besides, for every one person like you that won’t like him, there are probably 10 more than do. Pac-Man is a video game iconic and the face of the modern arcade. He is way more important than Captain Falcon

      • Jon

yeah I know, I am just saying that I better not get the game to find out one of them isn’t hidden to find out that Pacman bumped them off. lol And Captain Falcon… like come one, it’s Falcon Punch Mania… ๐Ÿ˜› What would we do without that punch? ๐Ÿ˜€

        • MerryBlind .

IF it DOES happen (it won’t), you should put the blame on Wii Fit Trainer (even though he/she looks hilarious), not Pac-Man.

          • Jon

the Wii-Fit trainer actually intrigued me though. I’d rather her than Pacman. lol

      • T J

I’m hoping for Jigglypuff to be left out. That character was so niche in melee, and in brawl it was balanced to be just worthless.
Idk how I feel about characters like Luigi, Falcon, and Ganondorf. While brawl did more to differentiate them from their base character (Mario, Fox, Capt. Falcon), they still are clones, would it take out flavor to remove them? Or would it be better for the franchise to have different/new characters instead?

        • Arthur Jarret

Luigi gets more and more different moves this time, I think.

With Mario having FLUDD as one of his moves (in various modes) – I think it is unlikely that Luigi would use his Poltergust in exactly the same way (it’s in his final smash, by the way) – he also gets his higher flutterjump.

That’s all we know about his moveset, though…

I hope ganon will actually use a sword this time. Maybe a phantom ball that does a lot of damage, but goes slow and which you are able to hit back (and back again, and back again) and the ability to switch between sword & his trademark trident – changing all base moves with a speedier set.

Falco should get his own moveset too. He’s a falcon – he should at least be able to glide and have a swooping move while in the air. Give Fox his SFA staff to fight with so Falco can have the blaster.

          • T J

Haven’t played enough Star Fox to know what a good moveset for him would be, but I def. agree on Ganondorf/Ganon. That character has so much potential to be unique. He just needs to break away from the captain falcon clone mold.

    • MerryBlind .

Are you mad??? Pac-Man is an awesome addition to the roster. Come on dude, it’s freaking PAC-MAN!!!

      • Thomas Vienna

I don’t mind that he’s in, but I personally never liked Pac-man’s 3D look. He’s one of those characters that didn’t transition to 3D well, like the Hawaiian Punch guy.

        • MerryBlind .

I don’t know, I think he looks pretty cool. I’m glad they adopted the ‘retro’ look though for Smash, not the more recent design.

  • MerryBlind .

    I don’t get this part:
    “…as Pac-Man hadnโ€™t been given a 3D form outside of advertising…”
Wasn’t there 3D Pac-Man games as far back as the Dreamcast? Maybe even before that? I remember playing a 3D Pac-Man (or Ms. Pac-Man) game on my uncle’s Dreamcast when I was younger.

    • Thomas Vienna

I don’t think they even remember when they were working on Brawl, to be honest. It must seem like a long time to them.

    • companyoflosers

i get the feeling sometimes that their attitude towards other games usually is something along the lines of “if we didnt have a hand in it, it doesnt exist”. i know thats not the case 100 percent of the time as is the case with skyrim being a big inspiration for the new zelda, but every now and then, nintendo needs to jog its memory a bit.

  • Lusunup

I think Sakurai never liked Pac-Man. Since Sora LTD is getting help from Namco Bandai, the least he could do was add him. it’s also a good thing he stuck with the original model because pac-man in ghostly adventures voice was horrid.

    Where is CAPTAIN FALCON????!?!?????

    • Epicstuf

      Maybe a suprise?

      • Jeffrey Floyd

He wasn’t revealed to be in Brawl you just unlocked him.

        • crocodileman94

          Same with Melee

          • LevenThumps

He didn’t have to be unlocked in Melee.

          • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

What he really meant is that he was never announced for Melee. He was confirmed to be playable once people actually purchased and played the game themselves.

          • Dallas Gooch

That was before they hyped up games to the extent they do now though.

    • Lusunup

I seriously don’t get people who think he never has a chance in joining, his Falcon Punch is a viral hit of course he is getting a spot he has always been there since the begining…

      • Jon

we all know his punch ๐Ÿ˜€

He is my favourite smash bros character

That’s why he should be in the game

      • Nicolas Dorion

They showed the samurai goro assist trophy
why would they put a samurai goro assist trophy but no captain falco

        of course he’s here guys

        • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

The same thing can be said about Ashley appearing as an assist trophy. We can expect Wario to appear as a playable character.

      • TaintedXGamer

he’s a veteran since N64, ness too and any other character that been in 1-3 SSB games. I guess they probably balancing em or Reworking how they move to be better than their old designs, we seen some characters get Changes to their move etc etc. now what to do about the #RIDLEYCONFIRMED!!!FANS …… they still think Ridley has a chance :/, i can’t wait to see the Ocean of Salt induced when they find out he’s a Stage hazard like the yellow devil. It’s their Faults for hyping themselves up for Ridley.

      • Clel

He has been here since Smash 64, any character that was in the first game is GUARANTEED to be in every single one from then on. And, of course, the beloved Falcon Punch <3

    • jjbredesen

He will be announced after the announcement of F-zero U ๐Ÿ˜›

But its a nobrainer that he will be included, they always have hidden characters ๐Ÿ˜‰

If he isn’t, I will go to Kyoto and falcon punch myself into nintendo’s headquarters to make them put Captain Falcon in the game ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • companyoflosers

as much as the polls show people want an f-zero game. i still dont think nintendo will do that until the end of the wii-u’s lifespan and thats being VERY optimistic.

        • jjbredesen

I agree, the comment was just sarcastic ๐Ÿ˜›

        • abe

Well we only get 1 Mario kart per system so I would imagine another racing game will come to Wii U and 3DS before their successors arrive

it’ll either be F-Zero or a retro made Diddy Kong Racing.

However I think a Luigi’s mansion style spin off Captain Falcon Game could come along.
If Nintendo is considering connecting some of its franchises I could easily see f-zero and Metroid sharing a universe

          • Natalie

It won’t be Diddy Kong Racing, Rare is owned by Microsoft, and therefore all characters except Diddy and Dixie are.

          • Arthur Jarret

Add Kremlins, Tikis, Nomads and you’ve suddenly got a full cast!

          • abe

Frankley there are plenty of DK characters to fill the roster, considering half the cast was original characters they could just make more. Retro have history both with DK and Mario Kart 7 plus is made up of several Rare guys. We’ve also had a DKR on 3DS after Rare was bought.

To minimise risk having an F-zero and Diddy Kong on different systems. That way if it eith game tanks at least they don’t have to worry about effecting the other version sales

      • Do we have to have this conversation again?

          What conversation?

        • jjbredesen

It was sarcasm, actually made that comment with you in mind ๐Ÿ˜›

        • Arthur Jarret

Did you play F-zero GX already? Because until then, the conversation has no real point – as you’d never understand how very different a game it is from other racing games.

(p.s. No F-zero because Wii U already has a racing game is a very poor excuse anyway – just look how many side-scrolling platformers it has… so two first party racing games isn’t beyond the realm of belief.)

          poke, poke…

Also, wave race, excitebike/truck/bots, kirby air ride and 1080 should return. Also racing games, but I don’t care!

          • StigtriX

            F-Zero games for GBA > F-Zero GX
Why? Because I find the gameplay and controlls far superior. I love the F-Zero franchise, but I do not think Nintendo has given us a really good 3D iteration yet. Let it happen with an amazing Wii U game! ๐Ÿ˜€

          • Do you want racing games to become the new 2d sidescroller of the Wii U? ;P

          • Arthur Jarret

If that would mean a new Diddy kong racing (adventure mode!), Excitetruck, F-zero, Waverace, 1080, Kirby air ride (yay, city trial!) and Stunt FX – then yeah.

    • LevenThumps

There is no chance Captain Falcon gets cut. He is one of the original 12, his Falcon Punch is iconic, and he has been a hidden character in two out of three of the previous games. He will be in.

They actually haven’t confirmed all of the original 12 (Captain Falcon and Ness) so no one can be 100% sure about Captain Falcon being in Smash bros for Wii U/3DS. But everything else you said is true and makes sense.

        • Arthur Jarret

I wouldn’t mind Jigglypuff being cut – with some of his moves being available for Kirby.

But it ain’t no party without punch – falcon punch!

      • rp17

Well Ness was almost cut from Brawl. And everyone else is questioning if Jigglypuff will return. So “the original 12” is not a good enough reason. The others you said are though.

I feel Captain Falcon is more important to Smash Bros than even Mario.

        • LevenThumps

I don’t remember Ness almost getting cut from Brawl. I know he almost got replaced with Lucas in Melee, but that was early in Smash’s lifetime.

And Captain Falcon is like Smash’s mascot, not Mario.

          • rp17

            I meant Melee lol

          • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

Ness was supposed to be replaced by Lucas in Melee. Ness was then brought back in the game due to the cancellation of Earthbound 64. Since the game was revived as Mother 3, Lucas was added in Brawl.

At this point, if one earthbound/mother character was to be removed, it would likely be Lucas since Ness appeared in all 3 smash bros games, is part of the original 12, and his game was actually released outside of Japan, twice (SNES and Wii U virtual console).

Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff will definitely return, mark my words.

          • Dallas Gooch

I agree 100% about the original 12 returning. About Lucas though, I loved playing as him and he was more fun to use than Ness in my opinion, but I wouldn’t mind Lucas being cut so another new character can come in, I mean think about it, with the whole move customization thing i’m sure Ness will have PK freeze as well as many other PK moves. And they can maybe even bring in another Mother character but that’s doubtful.

          • Komicturtle

Even if Lucas wasn’t cut that wouldn’t stop a new character. Someone compiled a list of potential characters based on the real leaks and characters we have so far and it rounds out to 50 even without Lucas being cut. The obvious “cuts” are Snake, Squirtle and Ivysaur unfortunately.

          • rp17

I think that all 12 original characters are coming back. It’s just that there are better reasons for them to come back than them being the originals.

I know that Lucas would likely be cut before Ness. It would be sad though as he is a fan favorite. And in my opinion, he’s the better character and Mother 3 is the better game.

      • Keith

Mega Man should be included. Iconic & just plain awesome!! Haha

    • companyoflosers

relax, he’ll be in it. i dont see them taking him out of all people. they still included fucking useless yoshi for god sakes, no way they will take out such an iconic character.

      • MetroidZero

Yoshi was one of the original 12. Before SSB4 was revealed, we all knew the next SSB was going to have at least 12 characters.

      • That guy who hates Spike

But…Yoshi was one of my mains in Brawl…

        • Arthur Jarret

They should let you choose a custom Yoshi color from a 256-color spectrum… or at least auto-adjust him to your mii’s favorite color.

    • That guy who hates Spike

I think people should relax about Cpt. Falcon. There’s no doubt he’s going to be in.

To compare to how Sakarai did it with the Dojo, Cpt. Falcon and other unlockable characters (Jiggly Puff, Ness, Mr. Game and Watch, Falco, Ganondorf) were all announced late in development of the game.

Cpt. Falcon was officially announced a month prior to Brawl’s release.

      • Arthur Jarret

People will only relax about Captain Falcon if Captain Falcon allows them to relax about Captain Falcon.

    • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

Relax. He’s one of the 12 and the Origenal 12 are always in any Smash Bros. Game

    • Keith

      Poor Luigi lol

    • TheBrainJemin

Captain Falcon is defiantly coming back, it’s just a matter of when they are going to announce him. (Seriously, it’s taking a hell of a long time.)

  • bistricky

    Slightly off topic but …

Where is “Pac-Man Museum” for the Wii U?
    It included Pac-Man Battle Royale (a 4-player Pac-man).

Bandai Namco started it and then stopped because of “delayed development” ,,,, what the heck does that mean?

I really looked forward to this game.

    • jjbredesen

Capcom is low on money, so its prob on hold?

      • BIG Franky

but…but… Capcom has nothing to do with Pac-Man Museum…..it’s Bandai Namco ….

        • jjbredesen

Now of all the things i have ever commented this must be the stupidest thing i have ever said…. Please understand.

      • bistricky

Joking, with meaning to follow …..

Another reason for Nintendo to buy up Capcom shares …..

I mean, come on man … XBOX 360 got Pac-Man Museum in JAPAN on June 25th 2014
        (I repeat …. XBOX 360 got Pac-Man Museum in JAPAN) ….
        XBOX 360 in Japan …..
JAPAN home of 3,000+ XBOX 360 owners …..
they get Pac-Man Museum while Wii U owner gets to “put the their finger in their ear and scratch” to hear Pac-Man.

        Cheers XD

        • jjbredesen

          • bistricky

LOL ….. it’s all good … I also got confused. Not surprising. Pac-man debuted how long ago? It’s all a blur now. XD

          • jjbredesen

Yup, lets just say i was drunk…. still embarrassed XD

      • The Clockwork Being

And…? Why would Namco care about that?

        • jjbredesen

I mistook them for Namco……….Please understand.

  • David Trail

Better than Solid Snake. He doesn’t even have a place on Nintendo consoles anymore.

    • Keith

      Extremely true

  • jjbredesen

Pacman is a nice edition, think he will be a fun character, but i would have liked someone else, such as Rayman.

    • MerryBlind .

      • Mr. J

        • jjbredesen

    • pacheco90

It wouldnยดt make sense with Rayman on it, he isnยดt a Nintendo character nor a Namco character, Pac Man is from Namco, Namco is helping Nintendo with the game.

      • jjbredesen

Yeah i know that, and i was sort of expecting him to be in, but i would like Rayman to join, as he would be a perfect fit ๐Ÿ˜›

        • pacheco90

          Agreed, I like Rayman ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Arthur Jarret

Mega man, Solid snake and Sonic aren’t Nintendo or Namco characters either… it could happen someday.

I don’t think they’ll add more third party characters on this version, though.

    • WiiUisgaming

And will give you ear- and headache ๐Ÿ™

      • Arthur Jarret

Don’t scratch too deep! You’ll poke your brain out!

    • darkcreap

Rayman would have been great. I liked how fun the character attacks were in Rayman Legends. Especially Barbara’s attack. I loved Barbara and all her variations.

    • Petri

Tempted to try… but I’ll pass.

    • Keith

Ha, just tried it. Ah the classic Pac Man sound lol

    • Komicturtle

I did that as a child and always thought it sounded like Pac-Man lol Glad more people are realizing this.

  • Jason

“Pac-Man hadnโ€™t been given a 3D form outside of advertising”

What about Pac-Man World 2? And Kirby, Samus, Marth, and Pit didn’t have 3D forms before they appeared in their retrospective Smash games.

    • Thomas Vienna

That’s what I was thinking! Nintendo has some weird reasons for not doing things sometimes.

      • Keith

Yet the things they do are far superior to any other console competitor.

    • companyoflosers

maybe this just shows how unaware of other games nintendo actually is. as much as i love nintendo, sometimes it feels like they just completely cut themselves off from everything else and just do what they think they should do. thats a good approach sometimes but right now when nintendo needs to be paying attention to what its fans want, not so much. i do think theyve been getting better at it tho. they seem to be on the verge of a big turn around.

      • rp17

“how unaware of other games nintendo actually was.” I think they have gotten a lot better since then, like you said. Still need to improve, but they seem to be trying.

I also wonder how much it has it has to do with the older, stubborn guys in leadership. Nintendo has great leaders but sometime they should give some of the younger guys more freedom. (That’s how we got Splatoon.)

    • Natsu

Not everyone knows every game and all those characters had arms and legs.

    • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

Pacman also appears as a playable character in Mario Kart Arcade

  • Matthew Lambert

i think most of us can agree that goku in smash bros would mess up everything

  • Joel

I still wanted Jin Kazama as the Namco rep. for Smash Bros.

  • FutureFox

He needs to be in Smash Bros.

    Here comes a new challenger!

    Kool-Aid Man breakin’ down barriers.

    • bistricky

Why not …. Kool-Aid Man was once a video game superstar …..

      • FutureFox

There you go. Though honestly from that clip I have no idea what was happening.

To be a worthy contender in Smash he will need more offensive maneuvers. Maybe a power stomp, toss ice projectiles, his Final Smash could be him building a brick wall and busting threw it to hurt players standing in front of it. Make an amiibo of him and watch it fly off the shelves!

        • bistricky

Great idea …. Nintendo should amiibo everything they can get Limited Edition rights to. I’d especially like to see a Superman 64 amiibo (one that immediately makes the game your playing, broken) …. ok, maybe not everything but Kool-Aid Man in Smash Bros. … “oh [hell] Yeaahh!”
          Cheers XD

          • Daniel Gonzalez

” I’d especially like to see a Superman 64 amiibo (one that immediately makes the game your playing, broken) ….”

You’re forgetting flying through rings and picking up cars.

          • bistricky

Didn’t forget … more in line with the broken controls in Superman 64 …. as one reviewer said back in the day: “The controls are so unresponsive that you’ll assume you’ve pushed the wrong button and begin bashing on all of them for some sort of attention.”.

  • Ducked

And people think Namco crammed it down Nintendo’s throat.

  • companyoflosers

mr game and watch didnt have a 3d form either and they put him in. as much as i dont care about the inclusion of pac man, even i feel like thats a dumb excuse.

    • Natsu

You are missing the fact that Pac-man 2d form have no legs and arms.

  • Spoon

Pacman already had been given a 3d form, and not one of those disgusting new designs of lately. In fact this Pacman looks a lot like the one from Mario Kart Arcade edition.

  • EmilyHJones

I think Sakurai never liked Pac-Man. Since Sora LTD is getting help from Namco Bandai, the least he could do was add him. it’s also a good thing he stuck with the original model because pac-man in ghostly adventures voice was horrid. http://num.to/427-837-276-945

  • Miyamoto knows what gamers want. It’s sad that his approval rating has gone down when you compare him to someone like Iwata, who’s approval rating has gone up :/

  • Noah

“Pac-Man hadnโ€™t been given a 3D form outside of advertising.”

    Right, except for:

    Pac-Man Adventures in Time
    Pac-Man Fever
    Pac-Man World
    Pac-Man World 2
    Pac-Man World 3

And probably more that I’m missing.

  • HydePark1980

This is exactly why Miyamoto is in a league of his own, only this guy could get Pac-man, FRIGGIN PAC-MAN!!! in what may be the biggest fighting game since the previous installment of SSMB.

  • fireheartis1

I personally think Pac-Man is a perfect guest character.

  • bizzy gie

So what? It’s that easy? They don’t have to go to whoever own’s the Pacman franchise? It’s just about whether he can be done in 3D right?

    • 00EpicGamer00

Well, yes and no. In order for a guest character to appear in Smash Bros. Nintendo must get permission from the appropriate company. But according to Sakurai, the problem with adding Pacman to Brawl was making a 3D form of him…though, I think ol’ Sakurai is pulling our legs again. There’s been a TON of 3D Pacman games before Brawl’s release. Even before the start of development for Brawl. When Miyamoto suggested Pacman, the development for Brawl was most likely near completion. Sakurai was probably just too lazy to put Pacman in, and just came up with a BS excuse.

  • Your money

Pac-man deserves a spot on the roster. (Get your keyboards ready) Yes, Captian Falcon may have his viral “FALCON PUNCH”, or Ness may be the child with awesome psychic powers, but Pac-man debuted way before both these characters. Give the old IP’s a chance.

  • wober2

I had no idea he wore boxing gloves… He would slaughter those ghosts.
