Shigeru Miyamoto is personally overseeing the creation of a series of cartoons based on the characters of the Pikmin series. According to Polygon, the series is scheduled to be released sometime before the release of Pikmin 3. If they series turns out to be popular, it’s something Nintendo could consider selling, according to Miyamoto.

The first video shown off was created by Miyamoto with the help of an external animation studio. Miyamoto said he used the 3DS’ Flipnote Studio to create mock-up examples of what he’d like to see and then discussed the project with the animation director from the studio in order to complete the video.

“We were working on several Pikmin CG animated videos and wanted more people to be able to see them. I had gone to a movie theater and saw the videos telling people to turn off their cell phones and thought we could create a Pikmin version of that, but instead decided to do the 3D glasses video.”

These shorts were then shown in Japanese cinemas in order to gauge the reaction from people. The videos are certainly a pet project of Miyamoto’s, as he stated he began creating them as a way to bring more life to the Pikmin characters.

“I didn’t want to license our characters out to someone else to create films. Instead, since I used to draw four-panel comics when I was younger, I thought it would be fun to bring a four-panel comic approach to creating video content, so we started work on these Pikmin videos. We didn’t have a good opportunity to announce that we were doing this, so while we were working on the movies we also created the Pikmin video that opened our E3 presentation last year.”

Currently the shorts aren’t available for public watching yet, but you can watch last year’s E3 presentation above. If the same technology that created that intro to the E3 presentation is used to make these shorts, then it’s likely that a Pikmin cartoon could be a great hit. Of course, Miyamoto has stressed that working on these cartoons hasn’t affected his game design duties and it’s mostly just a pet project that will likely help promote Pikmin 3 before its released.

What do you think of the news? Would you like to see a full animated series based on Pikmin? If the series was released on the eShop, would you buy them?Let us know in the comments below.

Woah, did not see this coming.

This man is full of surprises. (Which is why you should be HELLA excited for E3.)

    • MadCrain

Well, not really, E3 for Nintendo was stale (last year) but their Nintendo Directs are so exciting, it’s crazy! I prefer Nintendo Directs now x3

      • Laud

You know they’re gonna bust out the big guns at E3 this time though.

The most exciting E3 year is always the one after the console launches.

        • MadCrain

          I hope!

  • I can imagine that Miyamoto’s just doing it because he really loves “his Pikmin” and those cartoons have to be quite good in terms of quality since everything he does is done with a lot of heartblood (I hope that metaphor exists in english…). Looking forward to Miyamoto-san’s director debut ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Scott Duperree

In the USA you might say, “he put a lot of heart into it”, or “it was done with blood, sweat and tears”, but I’m sure everybody understood your point.

  • Ryushi

Personally I think this would be pretty awesome, I’m not the biggest fan of TV, but if anything from Nintendo was going to become a TV series Pikmin would be the one to do it.

  • When you say that Nintendo plans on selling if the series does well, do you mean that Nintendo will charge people to watch? Or that Nintendo will sell the license so that an outside company can continue the series as a TV show?

    • guest

i think it means that he will sell the cartoon rights to a television company or tv producers.

      • No, it says in the article he wasn’t interested in leasing the license. That hasn’t done so well with them in the past…

  • XelaFury

Let’s see how the Pikmin cartoons result to be, i’m really hoping it’s as good as Miyamoto says it will be.

  • Ryushi

Oh and about buying episodes from the eShop: I’m down with that if they give us a trial episode or two, then we’ll talk.

  • Yoshiwhirlwind

I hope this is true.3DS + Flipnote Studio would be awesome.I also hope it becomes a bit more like Inchworm Animation

    • The_Last_Metroid

      haha thats great!

  • Srpg2ishere

Yes. Yes. And YES! Please do Miyamoto!

  • 3ds’s flipnote studio, wow. i thought they just cancelled it or it was a fail like the disney 3ds videos in the eshop or ar cards. i guess after 2 years they decided to bring it back.

    • Silent

The thing about Flip Studio is that it is hard to animate in 3d. I dont know how could you do it but….

      • flipnote is just pixels. the worst that can happen is you make flipnotes by choosing a z index first, then draw normally.

        • Silent

News: Flipnote 3d is coming…. Youre right, Im sorry

          • i thought it was confirmed on this post.

  • Silent

Anything that comes from Mr.Moto is fine for me.
