In a recent interview with Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida, the Sony executive discussed the direction the industry is headed and how consumers seem to be obsessed with first person modern military shooters. Yoshida admitted that he doesn’t understand why anyone would want to play only triple AAA games and that when Sony works on a title that explores creativity, like LittleBigPlanet 3 he is concerned about how people will react. He also said that Nintendo provides a good balance for those who don’t follow gaming trends. I was very happy to get a very positive reaction when we announced LittleBigPlanet 3. We are concerned a little bit when we work on a game like LittleBigPlanet 3, about how people will react, because people want those big-budget, realistic, military shooters. But there were lots of cheers, a lot of affection. And the reaction to Nintendo’s games in general, or a game like Splatoon. If you look at the whole industry, and you consider Nintendo, I think the balance is actually better than past years. Splatoon is Nintendo’s own take on a multiplayer shooter, with cartoonish characters that can transform into squids who travel in the ink laid down when the character is human. The game was revealed at E3 and is Nintendo’s first foray into a first person team shooter. local_offer Nintendo shuhei yoshida Sony wii u stars Further Reading F-Zero X gets updated on Wii U to fix control New Zelda Breath of the Wild trailer and game Super Mario Maker Wii U vs 3DS comparison (vi Get Ocarina of Time on 3DS for only $14 New teaser site for Zelda: Breath of the Wild released How to track NES Classic Mini stock in time for Christmas nintendope Realistic military shooters are too mature for Nintendo’s audience, let’s just shoot each others faces with our ink, lol. Mr Ninty i think your sarcastic but if not. the other day me and my friends played gears of war 3 horde mode on insane and we completed the 50waves. took us 9hours of non-stop gaming and 3crates of beer. it might not be a realistic but it counts as a AAA shooter and stil im hyped for splatoon it somehow brings back the N64 feeling. nintendope I was being sarcastic. Rich Garriques realistic military shooters arent the only games to play! gamingpalooza its great that sony and nintendo have a good relation once again. RecheDiazrivarola ~_~ Zanzama Well Yoshida bought 2 Wii U’s… He probably supports Nintendo more than we do… ActivesiN even yoshida is tired of these boring tired rehash shooter games David Trail That’s why Yoshida has two Wii U consoles. ActivesiN not surprising considering hes a gamer, not like his sony fanboy userbase The Clockwork Being Yeah he has a Japanese one and a US one. Like that he has all the bases covered. shanafan Sony being arrogant as usual. The reception for LBP3 was very mixed. The platforming looked difficult, like past LBP titles. bizzy gie I heard lots of cheers. shanafan Too many cheers that felt very forced and/or fake after awhile. Even during the most dullest point of their press conference when Andrew House was on stage, people cheered for things that really didn’t need much cheering. DashGamer Ugh… Fanboys shanafan You are aware the majority of the watchers during the presentation agree, as well as the popular opinion was that the Andrew House segment was the lowest point of their show? And BTW, hide behind “Guest” all you want DashGamer, lol. E-mail notifications FTW matthew garcia Yet ps4 keeps widening its sales lead over the competition shanafan Yet with warnings and health risks, people still drink and do drugs. Can’t win them all! – and note, widening its lead expect in Japan. Daniel Gonzalez While Japan is a relevant market, it’s also a very small market, compared to the rest of the world. So it’s not a big loss when putting it that way. PS4 is also still young, so it has plenty of time to gain ground in that region. matthew garcia All consoles sale bad in Japan except for the handhelds.I’ll take global sales over the weak Japanese sales Daniel Gonzalez I’m sure Sony sees it that way too. They have games in development to target that region, but there’s no reason for them to rush their projects. Guest DashGamer/ BrokenGamer/ LordGamer/ OutspokenGamer/ Gamerfreak/ Daniel Gonzalez… All the same clown. Daniel Gonzalez Yep…they’re always out of touch with reality. Daniel Gonzalez So people are now forced to cheer? Uhm….yeah. I suppose by your logic, people are forced to cheer for Mario games. Due carry on your silly rants that so far, have been entertaining. Ducked Actually the game got a huge reaction at E3. People have been wanting this game since they revealed the PS4 matt Devils Third says hello thats Nintendo’s first FPS exclusive,Devils Third is a proper Online Shooter with all the best options and game modes found in a FPS and the actual killing is the best Ive seen….. Oh it’s still in development and Nintendo make devs work on perfecting gameplay then near the end of development they polish it all up so it will look Nextgen when it ships that’s for sure…..also the character models easily compare to watchdogs retail release…. Merry_Blind Personally, I think it looks like shit from what I’ve seen. YogiGRB uhm Devil’s third is not the first (on WiiU it is) I kind of remember Red Steel (1 and 2) and it was fine for it’s time. Merry_Blind There’s also The Conduit 1 and 2 on Wii which look pretty cool. Ducked LittleBigPlanet 3 looks amazing. It’s one of the reasons I’ll be buying a PS4. A shame most PS4 titles people actually care about won’t be out until next year. Sony is being a good sport about Wii U and Nintendo, and they should be. Both consoles are very different. The FPS genre is just so dead, yet people want to keep playing the same shooter experience. Epicstuf It’s for PS3, too. greengecko007 The PS4 will be an enhanced version of the game, and will most likely allow for more complex level design. LBP2 already has user made levels that really strain to run on the PS3. Ducked I didn’t know that, but I’ll still be buying it on PS4. Unless Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV, Batman Arkham Knight, and Star Wars Battlefront come to Wii U lol. Daniel Gonzalez Doubt any of them will when it’s said and done. Ducked Yeah most likely they won’t. Final Fantasy XV and Arkham Knight are highly unlikely . Daniel Gonzalez Those two in particular for sure. matthew garcia I’m pretty sure if the original Wii was on 360 and ps3 level Nintendo would still make games for it to but it was so underpowered that it’s now long forgotten. They only have wii u to rely on now. Sony is making money on 2 consoles Merry_Blind I think it just looks very similar to the previous ones. I mean, don’t get me wrong, LBP are great games, but I thought, with the PS4, they could have bring the franchise to new heights, but no, they just went with the “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” motto. I was hoping for a LBP 3D. Same concept, but in 3D like Super Mario 64, rather than 2D. Ducked You have a good point there. A 3D LBP game would be so awesome! They are adding new stuff like more character abilities, and the game still looks great. The PS4 will only be out for a year when it releases, so they’re probably not taking the technology in full effect yet. Hopefully LBP4 will be 3D, whenever that releases. greengecko007 It looks very different to me. Being able to play as a variety of characters that progress through each level differently opens up a wide variety of possibilities for level design and should do wonders for replay value. Merry_Blind I don’t know, it still looks largely the same. The new characters and abilities are just like the new guns, jet packs, and whatnot that they’ve added in the 2nd one. For me it looks like a sequel that just adds MOOAAARR content, but doesn’t make it better or different. You know, the “CoD way” of doing sequels. Though, don’t worry, I would never put CoD and LBP on the same level. greengecko007 That’s one way of looking at it I guess, but I don’t really agree. While it’s obviously not innovative, as other games have done the concept before, I think there is something to be said for such great level design. One of the reasons I really enjoyed The Cave was because all of the characters had unique abilities that helped them get through the environment, with different characters taking different paths because of these abilities. On the other side, as much as I love Super Mario 3D World, one complaint I had was that despite the characters feeling different from each other, the levels weren’t designed to make use of their abilities. Merry_Blind Yeah I get what you’re saying. Who knows, maybe LBP3 will turn out truly amazing because of those different characters. I really have to play the Cave… loved the demo on Wii U. greengecko007 If you’ve got the money and feel adventurous, I’d give The Cave a try. It’s not the greatest platformer/puzzle game out there, but I do think the environments show really good design and thoughtfulness. It’s a weirdly funny game too. Merry_Blind Well is the demo a good representation of the complete game? Or is the complete game somewhat worse? greengecko007 I never played the demo, so all I can say is that it’s a good game if you don’t mind spending a small amount of money. Merry_Blind Ok. I’ll probably pick it up on Steam whenever it’s on sale 😉 matthew garcia I was hoping for Mario galaxy 3, instead we got Mario 3dworld. Great game but not Mario galaxy Merry_Blind err… I’m glad they went with Mario 3D World. There is already enough sequels in the realm of video games as it is. I prefer variety and innovation. matthew garcia I think you forget that Mario 3d world was done on 3ds also so it is like a sequel. Anyways I think you forget little big planet is mainly about level creation which would be a lot harder if the game was 3d. I Merry_Blind Well I’m not against sequels per se, but I think 2 Mario Galaxy is enough for now, but sure, they can do a 3rd one in some years, just not right after the 2nd one. 2 2D LBP was enough for now, they should have done 3D one to spice things up, and to convey the feeling of ‘next-generation’ going from PS3 2D LBP to PS4 3D LBP. And 3D World seems like a much ‘bigger’ game in every sense compared to the 3DS one, and just the 4-players aspect of it more than warrants its existence. Anyway one is on handheld, the other on a console, so it’s different. (I thought releasing a 2D LBP on PSVita was a great idea, for example). matthew garcia I’m looking at it from a different perspective. Mario galaxy 3 will make people want a Wii u. I believe it would sale more consoles then mk8 Merry_Blind I think just a good 3D Mario game would sell Wii Us. Doesn’t have to be Galaxy. 3D World, is more of a 2.5D game. It seemed less ‘grand’ than a 3D Mario game like Galaxy, I believe that’s why it didn’t move as many units as it should have. matthew garcia But isn’t Nintendo doing a little big planet kinda thing with the new Mario game they had at e3. How come they didn’t make that game 3d Merry_Blind Because it’s a small scale game. It’s probably a small eShop title. Plus, they have to start somewhere, test the water a bit, see how it goes with consumers and how develop such a game. The point I’m trying to make with LBP 3 is just that they’re playing it too safe. Not that it’s a bad game, not that others do better than them, etc. just that, given we’re now in a new gen, a more ambitious sequel would have been much cooler, and would have made a much bigger impact. Alan Michael Hensley i think they’ll make it an eShop title and a disk version, probably retail at $29.99, and on eShop $19.99. but who knows, maybe it’s more vast than we think and it’ll be a full value game. thought i think the most Nintendo would charge would be $49.99. DKC:TF was only $49.99, so i don’t see Mario Maker being more expensive than that. SolarShane13 Yeah, I guess adding three new characters, the ability to create power-ups, 1st and 3rd person camera modes, and 16 layers is “playing it safe”. LOL. Guest I hear what you are saying there Merry. Seems others are so defensive and quick to run off at the mouth there is no opportunity for reasonable conversation. So quick to defend something so meaningless and even faster to lash out at other people’s decisions, these console wars are taking away from the fun of video games when people are so brand loyal. I’ll tell you what, the consoles I own is going to put out some of the best games and some terrible ones too. But either way, I will enjoy it and have some fun! Merry_Blind 1st and 3rd person camera mode? Alan Michael Hensley yeah, its Called Mario Maker. It’s basically a level design game, where you can use the classic 8-bit mario style graphics, or the graphics from New Super Mario Bros. U. The demo at E3 only showed 3 stage varieties, but im sure there will be more. I believe you can literally make as many worlds as you want and play them/share them so others can try out your creations, very much like LBP. what would be cool, is if you could make 32 levels( 8 worlds with 4 levels each) and play them in a row(like a real classic Mario game) that would be awesome. C4 I’d actually prefer a world map so you can make a stage with 2 level exits for example. Will be hard to get Mario Maker perfectly right on the other hand they can easily add stuff downloadable later. Especially once great stages appear I think it would be better not to play them randomly, as you said that would already be better to have a map in linear order maybe with preset, randomized or levels made by friends as options. matthew garcia Yeah that would be cool then you can put your world online so others could play it SolarShane13 But won’t have multiplayer 🙁 The excuse? To focus on the creation aspect; like multiplayer isn’t hard to implement especially from a company that’s pushing local multiplayer. Not being able to play my levels with family members is what killed MM for me. If LBP can do it, why can’t Nintendo? Merry_Blind Shit really? that’s so dumb… Darius its actually 3d. its even in the name “3d world” not 2.5d world lol Merry_Blind Really? You didn’t understand what I meant at all? Really? What I meant is that it wasn’t a third-person Mario game then like Super Mario 64 or Galaxy, that it functions more like 2D Mario games, even though it is, indeed, 3D. You understand now? Darius Really? you really didn’t know that What you mean doesn’t matter as much as what you say sometimes…you understand now?….because what you typed was “3D World, is more of a 2.5D game”. But now I’m curious…how does it function like a 2.5d game? Merry_Blind Galaxy is 3rd-person view. 3D World is isometric view. 3rd-person Mario games such as Sunshine or Galaxy are a bit more open and organic, whereas 3D World and 3D Land are designed like the 2D ones, go from start to finish in a straight line (more or less) except that they’ve basically added depth to that 2D gameplay. I’m not saying that negatively btw. I’m just saying that 3rd-person Mario games like Galaxy seem more grand and impressive than 3D World, even though 3D World is gorgeous and super fun too. Darius I was just teasing you lol I’ve never played the actually game…just the demo so I’m actually curious as to how it plays C4 I’d take a Tearaway 2 with more platforming and exploration. It also has good art design which fits more into 3D worlds. LBP Karting has 3D tracks but I think it looks a bit too generic. IMHO LBP should mainly focus on 2D platforming plus the stuff the editor allows. Benjamin_nl they didn’t change it that much because lbp 3 is also coming to ps3. the game that media molecule is working on much different then lbp 3 Merry_Blind Yeah probably. Rich Garriques its not people its casual gamers , they are the ones ruining the industry , 90% of them just buy a console to play call of duty on it , god i wish i could shot them. oontz “The FPS genre is just so dead” One word… Destiny. Elenora Tazia FPS is just too much on last and next gen consoles IMO. Too much already. I find that one day we will all come back to 2D graphics in the near future. RecheDiazrivarola Little Big Planet 3 also in ps3. Purple Technically isnt Splatoon a 3rd person shooter? Its not first person view is it? Christian Schoff Was just about to say that because yes it is 3rd person. Merry_Blind Indeed it is. People are just used to calling shooters in general FPSs since shooters are often FPSs, but that’s a mistake since a lot of shooters are third-person (Gears of War, Uncharted, etc.) Elenora Tazia That’s what I like about it. But Metroid is an FPS but different experience I had compared to other FPSs. greengecko007 I think it’s good to see well known people in the industry giving credit and compliments where they are due, especially when some of the industry is being plagued by corporate greed. Not calling EA out anything though. shanafan Sony should give Nintendo everything ounce of credit they deserve. Yoshida wouldn’t even have a job running Playstation if it wasn’t for Nintendo’s failed CD-ROM add-on for SNES partnership with Sony. CydeFxt Yuuuuup matthew garcia That’s when squaresoft left Nintendo and went to Sony. At that time that was a huge loss for Nintendo. Since then Nintendo hardly got rpgs and Sony had gotten so many. Squaresoft put Sony on the map Alan Michael Hensley indeed, Squaresoft couldn’t make the quality game they wanted to on the N64 cartridge, mainly because there is no way to make a multi-cartridge game. I’m sure that with the expansion pack, a Final Fantasy woul dhave looked better on the N64, but there would hardly any CG cut scenes to depict key moments in the story…so yeah. oh well, i just wish Square-Enix would remember that they started on Nintendo and show some love there way, over in America. DQVII on 3DS(Japan only) Dragon Quest 10 Online(Japan only) come on guys, bring US some love. i wouldn’t care if you did another Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles game on the Wii U greengecko007 I’m searching for the relevance… Daniel Gonzalez You’re not likely to find it in this argument. Daniel Gonzalez Even if it didn’t fail, there’s no way of knowing whether Sony would have entered the console market or not. Every ounce? Bit of an exaggeration, don’t you think? Sony made a big impression on the market and consumers as well with the Playstation brand, Gotta give credit where it’s due. TheAnimal Fleming People that don’t make money off either product are always arguing with each other that what I get from the story GROW UP PEOPLE Rich Garriques im glad yoshida understand whats causing the decline on real gaming and its this stupid military shooter gaming. it ruins a lot of gaming , to much casuals are supporting call of duty and battlefield and not buying other games and im sick of it. they should of trashed call of duty years ago. J_Joestar i think he means the over-reliance on AAA-budget games in general, where some people wont even consider a game that isn’t “AAA” so studios end up with over budgeted games that need multi-million sales just to break even. jhell nintendo is about balance David Trail Yoshida speaks sense otherwise we will be overblown with FPS and realistic driving games. matthew garcia I think all games including Nintendo are overblown. Jrpgs use to be overblown but they been quiet for a while now. Maybe it’s time jrpgs made a comeback David Trail Yeah games like Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Nintendo Land and Pushmo are really overblown. disqus_QNIAqtNpHo guys guys, lbp3 was announced on gamespot and amazon for ps3 later too anthony optimo Does balance mean, ripping off Wii motes, and playstation all star battle? Daniel Gonzalez I was wondering that same thing when Nintendo stole Phillips’ idea of motion controls. Seems like everyone is ripping off each other. As to Smash Bros…..this game has oddly familiar gameplay. Hmm…..rip off? Nah. Nintendo would never stoop so low. Or would they? Was also developed and published by Namco, who is ironically part of the development team for Smash Bros on Wii U and 3DS. Interesting tie in I’d say. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lxapXSAijw#t=82s Rinslowe The verdict is still out on that being a universal truth is it not? One court ruling in one area where the ruling is being appealed. And it’s specifically to do with “one” part of motion control in the controller. Afaik. It would be a little hasty to say from that they “stole” motion control from Phillips lol. There’s more to the equation to get it to work than that. Also it’s funny how such minor mechanics constitute a rip off in your opinion. I remember you trying the same thing with splatoon. Where the only connection was paint on the floor. It’s a little silly to make those connections because there really aren’t any. Whoa there’s red blood in that one. Must be a rip off. Oh I saw them climbing that ladder in the same way – must be a rip off. Done it again, they’re using double jump in that game “must” be a rip off. Wtf. ben It is coincident patent infringement at worst. nWo4liFe Really, dude? Smoker This industry is far from balanced, infact, I’d say at times it’s a little too much, too many consoles, too many options, too many games, prices too high, give me back the days were a ps1 and n64 or even a ps2 and gamecube were enough, no matter were you look now, your always missing out on something, honestly, sometimes this gaming habit feels more a chore than a passion, y’know the Wii U might not have a lot but a guy that can’t afford shit, it offers plenty of good quality options 🙂 William Cole Nintendo is the Avatar. 00EpicGamer00 It’s nice to see companies respecting each other.
