If you thought being the president of a large multi-national corporation means you’re above getting banned on Miiverse, Sony president Shuhei Yoshida has a thing or to two tell you. In a recent interview with Engadget where Yoshida talks about the last 20 years of gaming history, Yoshida has revealed that he’s been banned from Miiverse twice. According to Yoshida the reasons were valid enough, so it’s not like Nintendo was punishing him for working for a competitor.

“The first time was because I had my Twitter account in my profile and that’s against the rules. The second time is because I wrote, ‘I love PS.’ You’re not supposed to promote a commercial product in MiiVerse, so they correctly interpreted ‘PS’ as ‘PlayStation.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard Yoshida discuss the Wii U. Back in October of 2013, he admitted he has two Wii U consoles in his house and that he plays them regularly. In Decemeber of the same year, Yoshida defended the Wii U, stating it’s just getting started as a platform.

  • RyuNoHadouken

    cool story, bro

  • Malco

    Owned bitch yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • Miguel Angel Barrueta Hernánde

    he knew the rules
    he broke the rules
    he did it twice
    he pays the price

    • jjbredesen

Still hilarious! I have a lot of respect for this man, and the rules on Miivese are kind of stupid..

Here is his: “I Love PS” post:

And this is his user: https://miiverse.nintendo.net/users/ShuYoshida

      • Magnus Eriksson

Agree. Nintendo staff has a lot to learn from SONY.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

They certainly do. That’s how you promote. Perhaps a “I love NIntendo!” instead of a “Please understand” at a Nintendo Direct would do some good.

          • Magnus Eriksson

First I want to apologize that my body isnt ready for please understand 😀

        • jjbredesen

I agree on certain aspects, in terms of promoting etc. they are a lot better, Nintendo makes better games, but Sony makes better hardware.

Iwata should be replaced with yosp that would make a fantastic company.

If Sony got Miyamoto PS4 would be fantastic on the software side to, they should merge into Ninony where Sony does hardware and Nintendo software!

          • fireheartis1

Iwata doesn’t need to be replaced with Yoshida. Now if they came together and made one awesome console like you said that would rock hard, but Iwata is a genius when it comes to peripherals he just to go back and rethink the marketing strategy. I swear they still believe the name Wii is going to sell the Wii U.

          • jjbredesen

Yeah that is true, Iwata is not a bad CEO, but he is stuck in the past, but after the latest direct, i can see what the mean by becoming more western and it looks like it could work.

        • DragonSilths

          Miiverse Admins you mean.

      • Nintendo Dragon

I would think they would have thought PS meant something else like a female part XD

        • jjbredesen

lol, well he has 2 daughters age 9 and 10 i think so i hope not XD

    • Elitepwnsface

Sounds like there are a lot of fanboys on miiverse. I don’t even bother with it haha.

      • MerryBlind .

There are none to be honest. I don’t got often on Miiverse, but every time I’ve interacted with random people on it, it was always very friendly conversations. People go on Miiverse to talk about the game they’re playing at the moment; not to flame. So far, the community is great (except a bit too juvenile sometimes, but that’s to be expected (though nothing like “lolz penis” since you get banned for those))!

      • CoolDude5

How’d you come to that conclusion? The 1% posts that say the PS4 Sucks? 99% of the comments are either constructive/funny/wierd and in general very friendly toward Yoshida and Sony.

On the flipside… go on PS4 Stream and mention Nintendo. HOO HOO BOY MY GOODNESS! But to be fair… PS4 Stream is not a nice place to talk with people in general.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

I think Nintendo fans would flip out too if it weren’t for the strict rules on Miiverse. Lol. It happens on both sides. It’s inevitable. I think if the same rules applied on PS4 Stream, it’d be a similar environment as Miiverse.

          • Michael Ocampo

actually there’s been some posts like those

        • Elitepwnsface

You are probably speaking the truth. Just something about fanboys that rubs me the wrong way.

    • Carlos Webster

      Cool Nursery rime.

    • Miguel Angel Barrueta Hernánde

I also respect this man, hes one of the best out there, but that has nothing to do with the fact that he DID broke the rules, TWICE
      all hail the virtual boy!

    • Tecpedz94

If i was gonna say i love Wiiu or 3ds it wouldn’t get banned though….

  • Sam

    I’m not surprised.

  • Donaald

“has a thing or TWO to tell you”

Meh, those reasons seem pretty weak to me.

    • J_Joestar

well the twitter one is a pretty straight forward breaking of rules.

  • Thomas Vienna

    Lol, who hasn’t?

      I haven’t…..at least not yet

      • ETeach

Ditto. But every day I wonder if today will be the day XD

  • Josiah Parsons

    Poor guy…

  • uPadWatcher

Never promote your game systems on a rival console on Miiverse.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

You’re right. He should have marketed it. Such a wasted opportunity.

      • Ducked

Exactly, he should have added some links on his profile to the PS4

  • The_fuzz_buzz

I gotta say that I give this man quite a bit of respect. Because you wouldn’t see the top Microsoft guys playing on a Wii U, or trying to help encourage the product in the public eye. So instead of bashing it like Microsoft does, he was more than a good sport.

    • abe

PhilSspencer the then head of Microsoft studios and now head of Xbox often talks about how great Nintendo are, he recently slammed PlayStation all stars whilst praising smash bros and i’m sure he once said about playing his Wii U

      • That guy who hates Spike

He said he has a Wii U, and his family loves it.

  • Peter Lythaby

    Ooh rebel!!

  • Capt. Smoker

That’s kinda mean…. he’s entitled to love ps, as are we all, yet Nintendo ban him for that?, petty move from a petty company in my opinion, poor mr Yoshida, he’s a nice guy, runs a good company too, maybe Mr Iwata should take a few pages out of his book, he seems to give the world what they want, Nintendo can’t even please their home soil with the piece of crap they call the Wii U.

    • abe

Miiverse rules say you can’t promote something not related to the community

      • Capt. Smoker

Pretty silly rule if you ask me, not like he was advertising his product or anything.

        • jjbredesen

Yeah you can get banned for just about anything, feel like Nintendo are being a little to over protective..

          • Capt. Smoker

That’s what makes it such a piece of crap, too restrictive and far behind the others in terms of interesting and useful apps

          • jjbredesen

Yeah, its fun to use, but the fact that posts can’t be longer than 200 chars and all the rules makes it a annoying experience. Apart from that its fun to use, but i would like to be able to respond to individual comments to.

            btw whats you NNID`?

          • Capt. Smoker

I feel much the same, I love drawing so that’s a fun aspect of miiverse for me, if not the funniest part, my NNID is fullmetal87 lol at least I think it is, if you find a dude in a blue hat, that’ll be me

        • Marko Kuku

For a playstation executive to say “i love my brand” is what i see promoting his own Product, for an exec it’s fairly self-explainatory if he goes to his competitors forums and does this.
But still i enjoyed Reading about Mr Yoshida’s Antics..

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Makes me wonder what would happen if a fan just said ” I love using PS.” It’d suck to get banned if they were just talking about Photoshop.

          • Marko Kuku

not saying it cannot happen but it worries me a bit.

          • lonewolf

He will also get banned because he is promoting photoshop

    • Stoo

Nah, they wouldn’t have known it was him personally, it’s an automatic ban for promoting commercial products. We don’t want to see people spamming adverts for things (for example). You would also get banned for saying “drink coca cola”, even though Nintendo isn’t competing with that company. No references to other products or services, the rules are clear.

      • Capt. Smoker

Well…. if it’s automatic, I suppose I understand, now I understand why I got a warning for drawing that teddy bear from danganronpa and telling people they should watch it, hate how its so restrictive though…

  • ETeach

Well, that made me laugh XD

  • Ducked

Nintendo banned him because their jealous

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Isn’t it obvious? They just don’t like to be taught how to advertise. Certainly poor sports. ;P

      • Yoshifan3

hey daniel, long time no see, just wanted to ask what do you think of mario kart 8?

      • Ducked

  • anthony optimo

    “Real recognize real”

  • Nintenjoe82

What if he was saying “I love PS” on the Miiverse page for a VC Phantasy Star game?

    • jjbredesen

It could be a lot of things:

      Phosphatidylserine, a phospholipid

etc. so perhaps it was not playstation he was talking about XD

      • Rinslowe

That would have been one hell of a point, if the “comment” wasn’t made from an executive manager @ one of Nintendo’s largest competitors… Lol.

I’m not saying I agree with every rule Miiverse apparently has. But that was kind of a predictable outcome.

        • jjbredesen

I know, but everyone has got to be treated equally 😛

          • Rinslowe

Oh I think that was dealt with in equality to the cheekiness of promoting your own product on your competitors online service. Lol.
It doesn’t look like much to me and for all intents and purposes it really isn’t more than a cheeky sense of humour…

          • jjbredesen

Yeah Yosp seems like a really cool guy, and i am sure i did not mean anyting with it XD

          • Zanzama

So never ever use the term “lol” in miiverse. Who knows? You might receive a ban for promoting League of Legends?

          • Rinslowe

            League of Lol’s… Lol.

      • FutureFox

Unless Nintendo simply mapped his username, real name and age together with the comment posted to assume he was the real deal.

        • jjbredesen

They knew it was him, he posted it public XD

          • FutureFox

Wouldn’t be the first time someone made a username based on another person’s real name (especially to troll). Do you really believe the actual Reggie Fils-Aime comments on here?

Point is Nintendo presumably has some simple filters in place, even it is just match username with prominent competitor personal and just ban based on certain likely criteria.

          • jjbredesen

I do not believe it was the real Reggie as i was the one behind the account 😛

My IP was banned from here for reasons that is between me and WUD, and when it was unbanned only this account was functional, that is why Reggie is no longer here XD

          • FutureFox

Whoa! Revelations. So the diabolical plot thickens….. ; )

          • Michael Ocampo

          • jjbredesen

Thinking of doing it, just need to make a new account and make some good jokes, i was running out of them and people where getting annoyed at the amount of upvotes he got, but he will be back 😉

          • Michael Ocampo

Prep your body and then come back when it’s ready!! XD

          • jjbredesen

Yes sir, my body is —-> soon ready xD

          • Michael Ocampo

OH YEAAAH!! I kinda miss that guy!

      • Robinpreet Sidhu

How long did you work on this? LOL!

        • jjbredesen

          10-15 mins XD

  • Stephen Macneil

Shu is awesome! Unban him, he loves Nintendo.

    • FutureFox

Competitor research in the guise of love and family fun.

  • ZeldaFan83

Its pretty sad how easy and quick you will get banned for the most ridiculous things. I got in trouble once because at the end of my profile comment I said “Feel free to follow me”. Its not like I was saying you must follow me or add me as a friend. If you want to follow me you can and if not than no big deal. Its just sad…there’s no freedom on Miiverse.

  • TCar

Good for Nintendo. Too many people try to take topics down the wrong path. Stay on topic and you don’t have anything to worry about! Also, follow the rules; they aren’t that hard to follow!

  • Petri

    3 posts… scribbles of an 3 year old… and over 2000 followers.

    • jjbredesen

He got banned, so he has not made anymore posts :P, but yeah his drawing skills suck XD

      • Petri

I do not believe he got permanently banned.
I’ve made some stupid posts in Miiverse, and those only got deleted.
Most of them was interpreted “offensively”, and 1 endorsement for criminal activity.
I simply speculated that current Resident Evil developers were smoking something groovy.

        • jjbredesen

Well thats true, but he was banned 2 times and since there has been no activity, he has a new user that nobody knows about??

He has 2 Wii U’s and 2 daughters so they probably use the systems more, and have there own Miiverse accounts?

And your post was on topic his was not.

      • Robinpreet Sidhu

Well if English isn’t his first language then it is fine, if it is then yeah it sucks.

  • Petri

Would have been cute if Iwata had been on his friends list, but no dice.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

For using the post “I Iove PS,” 15,000 Wii U owners ended up buying a PS4. I don’t blame Nintendo on this. A few words make such a powerful tool. Good work, Shuhei.

    • TheRealTruthTeller

i want a PS4 just for the PlayRoom thingy, anything else is balls on that console

      • Robinpreet Sidhu

I want it to give it away for double the price!

  • InterTreble

A complete idiot! Ahahah! “I love PS” denotes the mentality and the maturity of Sony people… They can sell 400€ pieces of furniture without games to milions of people, but we’d rather have fun and enjoy with games, not spam and troll all days. An now shut up, mr Yoshit! 😉

    • Yoshifan3

ALERT: watch out for this fanboy.

      • Christian Schoff

Yeah he makes Wii U players look bad. I want to smack him in the face with my Gamepad.

        • TaintedXGamer

maybe he need the Wiimote – nunchuck combo Beating

      • InterTreble

Laugh sometimes in your life, man… 😉

  • X3Charlie

You can use miiverse to interact with other gamers. But that’s where it ends, if you start getting too close you’ll be banned because you’re clearly a pedophile, please understand.

    • J_Joestar

well it is the sad truth that happened on swapnotes.
      i miss nikki…

  • leo

    #Leave Yoshida Alone!

  • leo

    I love Photo Shop

  • Dáibhí wotshissurname

So he got banned because he said he likes PlayStation. I once said some lovely stuff about Edge from Two Tribes which could easily be considered as subliminal advertising. So saying your praises for a game (a.k.a. a commercial product) on Miiverse is essentially a way of that product getting street cred.

See thee irony I’m getting at here? (Although I guess you could argue with me on that)

  • PachterStation

I have one Wii U in my house. It’s become an ornament. If anyone has any news on a bucket load of new games, give me a nudge. I’ll be getting Mario Kart 8, but after that, it’ll be good night Vienna. Powering up my Wii U for Mario Kart 8 might put it into shock. Looking at the Wii U manual, there’s nothing about this in the troubleshoot section.

    • Marko Kuku

Tried Golden Sun? or Metroid Fusion?
I’m playing Super Mario Bros Deluxe on my 3DS and falling in love with old school gaming again. <3

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Patcher has a Wii U now I know who is trolling.

    • Rinslowe

That’s because you’re too busy ducking for cover as the internet comes crashing down around you “Science”…

    • Robinpreet Sidhu

  • Yousif Alromaithi

he was trolling thats why. Man I hate my Miiverse the users are sometimes crazy.

  • Gethoff Mahfacebuk

Publicly say you enjoy the product that has ZERO chance of beating you, as opposed to having much to say about the X-Bone. Now there’s a smart man.

  • Leo

“I love PS” – if i were Nintendo i would ban him forever.

  • The Batman

Nor Sony or Microsoft ban people for saying I love >insert other company<, for Nintendo to do it is just so childish.

    • lamLisa

You’re wrong. Just. So. Wrong. Go back to eating your cheetos and leave the gaming discussion to the adults who understand.

  • FutureFox

Wonder if Shu could have said, ” IPS Freely” and gotten away with it?

  • SP-937-215

I got censored for saying the word “poop” when referring to Wii shovelware.

  • devmiles

mii verse is so fucking pathetic.. i got banned so many times for really nothing.
is there some stupid nintendo nerd behind the desks checking whatever people say..?
actually i don’t even care the whole mii verse thing anymore, there is nothing really you can do besides post some shit and get banned.. really pathetic.. a place where 8 year old kids can hang out.. there is no facebook, twitter connection, or more open web connection thing going on. ok, i know it’s a console and it’s about the games but also that is very questionable besides a handful of reasonable titles. fail fail fail

  • David Horowitz

At least he’s a good sport about it, and still likes his Wii Us.

    • David Horowitz

      It’s a funny story, though!

  • Golden Gamer

Gosh, he didn’t even get a warning for it!

  • Can I just say that this changes nothing? Nintendo will continue to be ostracized. President Obama himself could advocate the console, and people would just complain about it even more. Except for the kids, who just troll because it’s “cool.”

  • How can you delete these administrator messages? I have one because I added my homepage in my Profile and had to “correct it”. So now am stuck with some admin message forever. Hey I fixed it already, let me now delete the message.

In the other hand cannot they create there autocheck of HTTP, WWW and other texts like that and warn in beforehand? Because Miiverse let’s you do it, it looks like it is accepted, then afterwards not. Also lot of unnecessary work for Nintendo staff.
