During Nintendo’s E3 presentation, Nintendo showcased new story footage from Monolith Soft’s X project, now titles Xenoblade Chronicles X. The game is a successor to the 2011 Wii release Xenoblade Chronicles and will be arriving on the Wii U in 2015. This is the first time we’ve seen story footage for the game.

Is this what you expected to see?

  • Ducked

Wasn’t really expecting a 2014 release for this, but it would have been nice if they gave a release window for 2015. I’m really looking forward to this, would have liked to seen more gameplay footage. But they could have given it a better name lol.

  • Steve

    Please no more GameStop exclusivity.

    • gamingpalooza

agreed… hate shopping at gamespot.. i buy my games at best buy and they price match amazon, walmart, gamespot, ect…

  • Roadkill409

Bummer, I guess it give me time to save some cash.

  • darkcreap

    Good: it looks great.
Bad: Not 2014. It wouldn’t be a problem if Zelda came before or another big hit in the middle to make up for the gap. Hope that the Starfox leak is real and that it comes before this year ends.

    • Arthur Jarret

It’s confirmed now, together with project guard and project… erm… giant robot

      • darkcreap

I am reading that the Starfox game might be a year away :(. Too bad.

        • Arthur Jarret

At least a year away, yeah. But hey, it seems ALL must-have games (Nintendos, Sonys, Microsofts) are coming 2015.

Looks like next year will be one of those legendary years we’ll always remember, like 1994 or 1997

    • Parker Parker

it does look great execp the charater models, the faces are too anime.

      • MujuraNoKamen

        I thought same.
And maybe the trailer is just low quality but I thought the graphics looked really downgraded. Game still looks fantastic though.

        • darkcreap

The faces look not very good for what I expected, but the graphics are good enough for my like, plus the music and style seem appealing. I smell an epic game.

I think it is likely that it will look similar to this. When they released the X trailer in 2013 no faces were shown and I think that they did it to give focus to other things, so I guess they cannot get it to be much better.

Anyway, I think there are other strong points in the game. I’ve never been a graphics bitch. This one looks enough for me plus the story and music seem to going to be pretty epic.

Also, the E3 website says “Players TBD” and the first trailer in Jan 2013 showed a chat window. Maybe it will have online

          • MujuraNoKamen

Game looks amazing but I dont care for how flat the characters look. Even in Last years trailer Elma’s armour looked all metallic and polished, now it looks blocky and flat.
Oh well the world is still beautiful and huge so can’t wait 🙂

        • LonDonE247

AGREED, i thought i was the only one thinking that! the game looks massively downgraded graphically! the first few trailers had proper real time lighting but now the game looks flat and too cartoon like, the texture quality has taken a big hit and the character models look like PS2 or Wii games upscaled! just look at the hair!? LOL seriously i loved the first game on wii, and the x trailers looked awesome but man this new E3 trailer looks like a wii game just upscaled! i so hope i am wrong as this game looked stunning at first! maybe it was just a rubbish quality video but i am worried that they have either changed the art design for the worse or down graded it big time! time will tell!

          • MujuraNoKamen

I think it was the trailer that was just early footage/a low quality stream. I watched the Treehouse live gameplay video and the world looks as good as ever (but now you can see how absolutely gigantic it really is!)

I still think the characters look really flat and cartoony. I’m fine with them stylising them to look like anime with big eyes and weird hair and the like but they look really dated like you said.
I was hoping they’d go down the route that the recent FF games have, IMO that’s a great balance of realistic and anime that would work really well in this world. It may just be early footage but it’s like having PS2 characters walking round a next gen Xenoblade, yuk.

      • darkcreap

The faces seem a bit… I don’t know. Being Anime like is not necessarily a problem to me.

By the way, the new Zelda also has a bit of an Anime feel to it too.

        • Nothing5555

I’m sorry the faces in the game were horrible!! They looked like it was taken from the Wii.

          • C4

Not from Xenoblade on Wii. They are much much worse there.

          • Parker Parker

agreed faces and hair can be better.

          • Nothing5555

Hopefully they fix this before the game is release….though I’d still buy the game.

          • Parker Parker

despite that detail i will definitely buy it as well.

  • Mr Ninty

it was always 50/50 with this game when it will comeout. but better a good game in 2015 then a bad game in 2014(we have CoD for that :p )

  • Rinslowe

Yeah I’m pretty disappointed about this news. I was hoping on playing X this year. But no point to get too upset over it. There’s a slew of games to get through all up…

Still. A little grr is in order.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Game delays from all three has been a theme for this year. The bright side is, 2015 is that big year for gaming, at least I think so.

      • gtosheex

That’s what people said last year for 2014 =P

        • Rinslowe

Also True. But also true in that this year has also some pretty big, pretty spectacular games.

          • oontz

Yes, this year has already been great and it’s only June.

      • Rinslowe

    • darkcreap

Positive things: Games announced seem good (Captain Toad, Yoshi, Zelda (Incredible), Xenoblade (Incredible too), Splatoon, Hyrule Warriors. etc). Plus Nintendo is taking the risk with new IPs (Captain Toad, Splatoons, two of Miyamoto’s projects). Also listening a bit to fans (Starfox). Also they are trying to bring third party exclusives (Devil’s Third) with a more mature look, which will give more variety to WiiU. Also, there is Watchdogs. Bayonetta 1+2 is also great.

Negative: 2015 for almost everything. That 2015 in X and Zelda has killed me. No expansion for WiiU VC, but I guess we are bound to hear more on this later on, because of the Gamecube pad adaptor, you know. Nevertheless, there is Hyrule Warriors to fill the gap plus Smash Bros. I also hope that at least Zelda or Xenoblade come early in 2015. One of the two.

Bittersweet, globally. Devil’s Third coming to cover a more “adult like” is good to give variety. If only, a bit more quantity in exclusives like this would be great, but at least Nintendo is moving.

All things considered, though, I think this will mean that the WiiU will start going slow again until Smash and/or Hyrule Warriors take steam. Hyrule Warriors is gonna be great (especially with that co op mode), but I don’t think it will be a massive hit in the West.

By the way, I just saw the Xenoblade page at the E3 Nintendo site and it says “Players: TBD”. A relative of mine told me that the first trailer for X showed a chat window. I guess we could get online after all. I don’t know if it will be a typical multiplayer or we will be able to have online coop in story mode, which would be great. Or at least if it could be local multiplayer…

    • Ducked

Nintendo still needs Kingdom Hearts III. And I was hoping to see Fire Emblem x SMT to be shown, seriously where is that game? Maybe we will see both at the Tokyo Game Show.

      • Rinslowe

Totally agree KH3 would be another title like X and FE X SMT and Zelda that would have me busy almost all of next year. Will they ever do it?
Yeah… Talk about secretive. Isn’t Atlus looking after that?

    • TheGamerGeek128

I was ready for the game to be delayed. This seems WAY too ambitious of a project to not get delayed. Still disappointed, though.

    • greengecko007

This news doesn’t come as a surprise at all. It sucks for the people that are excited for this game though.

  • HYPE

  • Diaz

I’m noticing that Nintendo is the only one that can make a console with the ability to survive on only exclusives. If the PS4/Xbone didn’t have third party they’d be dead.

    • darkcreap

Bad thing is that WiiU is not getting those third parties to fill the gaps. Except for Devil’s Third. It seems to me that they are doing a Bayonetta with it. I mean, they are resqueing it and getting it into an exclusive. Good thing that they try this: more exclusives with a mature feel give variety.

Nintendo should try and do this even more often.

      • Santiago

the way its been working is, AAA game every 2 or 3 months and lots of indy games (and Nintendo has virtual console too) in between. This is true for all trhee systems.

      • D.M.T

I think this is what Nintendo will continue to do going forward, they will rescue a bunch of games and make them exclusive to Nintendo systems.

    • C4

I’m okay with Sonys output during the last ~24 months.

    • Ducked

Nintendo still needs third parties. Ubisoft is holding off now until sells go up. Once Smash comes out sales will jump three times higher than MK8 release.

      • D.M.T

That’s funny because Xbox One has a smaller install base and Ubi is still putting their games on Xbox One.

        • Ghost8484

dang….i really wonder why is that to?

    • greengecko007

How do you know? We haven’t exactly had a playstation or xbox without 3rd party support to compare with.

    • D.M.T

You realized that just now? Better late than never I guess. I realized this a long time ago

    • crocodileman94

While they “can” do it, it’s not very healthy for them.

    • Ghost8484

      i agree.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles X gon’ give it to ya!

  • mojack411

Shame that it’s a 2015 release date but I’m super hyped nonetheless. With this trailer, it’s clear how this connects to the first game, even if they didn’t say it was a direct sequel. I’m liking the alien designs but the human faces seem a little too plastic, but we’ll see how they turn out with more polish.

    • Ducked

I don’t understand why didn’t just call it Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in the first place.

      • mojack411

Well after watching the Treehouse stream, apparently this is being considered a spiritual successor. I guess there isn’t as a direct a link as I thought

  • Igor

First one was damn terrible. Forced myself 42 hours into the game but couldn’t take it any longer. Story was mediocre, graphics were made by a 2 years old kid, and the gameplay was one of the worse I’ve ever seen. They hype was so big, and I waited so much to put my hands on it, that when it did happen…. well, as said above, wasn’t “exactly” what I was expecting. This new Xenoblade for me is already dead.

    • C4

      It’s the best Wii game.

    • Really? You are the first person I see badmouthing Xenoblade Chronicles. It’s your opinion and I’m content with it. All I hear besides this from you, everyone else I spoke claim it to be the best Wii game ever, and even one of the best games of all times. Personally I loved the story so many plot twists that even in the end you couldn’t know what was gonna happen.

Graphics for a wii game where awesome, so many things to do and to unlock, played the game 4 times though from the beginning, including twice a new game plus. Spent nearly 400 hours (in one of my double playthoughs) in the game (including a new game plus) just to be able to unlock everything, build bonds with every character party wise maxing all out, named npc’s bonding, rebuilding colony 6, finish up every possible quest.

And I haven’t even got all the best armors/weapons for everyone, didn’t max out every ones battle abilities yet (only maxed out all 5 skill trees, 3 standard and 2 unlockabke on every single char), I didn’t even beat 4 out of 5 optional boss mobs (lvl 108, lvl 112, lvl 116 and lvl 120). I suppose the game just isn’t for you then, and the first time I hear something like this ever, O well. Your opinion so no hard feelings.

      • Igor

People do like it, and that’s what makes it weirder. I know that it has tons of things to do, but boy did I hate it all. Well, at least what counts is the majority, hope you enjoy the next version of it then. But I’m reeeeeally done with it. There were 3 to come if I remember correctly, xenoblade, the last story and pandora’s tower. I was drolling over last story, but the disappointment with xenoblade was so big that I gave up on trying the others as well. Then I started playing Skyrim, and at least for me it was a very good experience (taking aside the fact that if you play on ps3 you’re in a hell of a trouble in what regards to loadings).

    • keithmaxx

Graphics by a 2 year old? Wow Monolith sure must have genius graphic artist toddlers, then!

    • Medaka Kurokami

I must know two things.. How far did you make it in 42 hours of “forcing” yourself to play to get a good enough amount of the story to talk down about it? And graphics.. If you cared about graphics why did you have a Wii?

      • Igor

I don’t like to think I completely wasted money on something I was so excited to get before knowing I wouldn’t like it, so I played as much as I could manage. There’s nothing more to it really. About your second question, there are games I really like that I could play only on Wii, such as Zelda, Smash Bros and sometimes Fire Emblem. I care about graphics, much more than most people, but I know too that without story and a solid gameplay you won’t go far with anything. And to my eyes, Xenoblade was, graphically speaking, no more than a N64 game.

        • Medaka Kurokami

Alright, fair enough my good sir. I can see what you mean for Xenoblades graphics, but sacrifices had to to be made. For the environments to be what they were at 480p was amazing, but there was no way the character models would have been able to be as good. I assume you mean all around when talking about the graphics but personally only the character models were a weak point.

  • Elvis Michael

    On a different note…
This Project Robot thing looks slow, clunky, and it feels like a college student project. I dont even know why this guy is wasting his time on this thing.
    Anyone agrees?

    • XrosBlader821

Well Miyamoto said that these are early tech demos about Ideas he is working on, not full games. Of course if the games were released how they are now they would suck as hell.

  • In the end it looked like Riki, I’m even more hyped for this game now. To bad it’s also 2015 release. Little dissapointed in that, but with all these games in 2015 and so few in 2014 I have time to save lots of money for 2015 and get them all day one. For this year it seems it’ll be Bayonetta 1+2, watch_dogs, MK8 and smash brothers, to look forward to.

To all non believers, I just have to say: I told you so, regarding Zelda and Xenoblade Chronicles X being resceduled for 2015 and not 2014. Dissapointing, but I expected so much already, so not to surprising to me, although 3 years in a row with a game drought is not good for business. But I’ll hold on to 2015.

  • C4

Huge succeeded! 🙂 Will be a long wait until 2015.

  • Dark Lord Sauron

i knew X was xenoblade 2 cant wait for it

  • steveb944

I hope this is translated, I don’t want to read text the whole game.

  • sd

One of the best games to come out on any system this year. I hope its not a long wait into 2015 for this.

  • Elitepwnsface

I wish this included the first one. Seeing how most of us have not had a chance to play it.

  • Mitch Hall

Everything looks great except for the 2015 release date… and those weirdly blurry faces.

  • Capt. Smoker

Nice to see this game will likely have dual audio for those of us who like to hear the games native language, I don’t buy games like this if it’s only available in English, not after the likes pandoras tower, arc rise fantasia, the last story etc, the voices in those games was make or break for me, I really appreciated Platinum giving us the option in the Wonderful 101, and they’ll most likely do it with Bayonetta 2 as well, I don’t know why Japanese game developers or publishers (whoever makes the decision) can’t just leave them in there as an option, it’s not like they lose anything by doing so, fyi, this game looks AMAZING.

  • oontz

That trailer did nothing to make me want this game at all. But for those that do, I hope it exceeds your expectations.

  • Shane ♓

I didn’t think I could be any more excited for this game.

  • Brandon

After announcing bayonetta 1 is coming bundled in with the second, I think they should do the same with this game. I heard xenoblade on wii was good, but hard to get in other places outside of japan, so it would be a great idea to get people started with the series.

    • daeglyth

Bayonetta 1 was originally released on Wii U, while Xenoblade Chronicles only on the Wii. So there’d probably be a lot more effort involved with porting that to the Wii U, unless you could only play it in the Wii mode. That aside, at least in the states it was a Gamestop exclusive and you can likely still find it at Gamestop.

  • Medaka Kurokami

Well considering I’ve been sold on this game from day one way back when, and knowing the guys and Monolith are going for the whole anime-style and all but am I the only one who feel the character motels are less than what they could be?

    • Guest

I am with you on the character designs

  • Rinslowe

This latest gameplay video from Nintendo’s Treehouse event is great stuff. And why I’m so hyped for this game. And why I’m so damn disappointed it’s not here in 2014. lol.

    Oh well… Darn.

Gorgeous and expansive. Facial features are pretty distinctly Japanese styled, which is ok. To be expected from the series. But I really like the characterisation and in game character models and animation is OK too. The worlds creatures are something else. I just wanted the guys to shut and play more, even though the explanations were welcome. Ha.

    Can’t bloody wait!

  • yugatsuj

who do we have to shoot to find out if this game is multiplayer or not?
