Earlier today Bethesda Softworks announced Wolfenstein: The New Order for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC and next generation consoles. The modifier “next-gen” was used in all press release materials, so Polygon’s Brian Crecente took to Twitter to see if that specifically included the Wii U. Pete Hines got back to him with this statement:

Personally I would be very interested in the game if it makes its way to Wii U, as Return to Castle Wolfenstein 3D was one of the first FPS games I ever played and enjoyed. What do you think? If it comes to Wii U, will you pick it up? You can check out the reveal trailer for the game below.

  • audi lover

If it ls released ill def get

  • [000]

Well, that could mean one of two things:
    1. Bethesda is interested in Wii U, and will develop the game for it
2.Bethesda thinks the Wii U is not next-gen material, and a joke of a console.

I think we can safely assume that it’s the first one. Otherwise they would have probably just flat out denied the possibility of it coming to Wii U.

    • Magnus Eriksson

OR they want to wait after E3

      • blah

OR nintendo will use it as a surprise in their directs in june…

        • ludist210

This seems to be the most likely scenario. I’m betting the Direct before E3 (or their stage presentations at E3) will spotlight a ton of games for the Wii U. It has to.

          • Magnus Eriksson

But will Nintendo be powerful enough to handle it? New reports on the Frostbite 3 engine says that they where so disappointed with how bad Frostbite 2 runned that they didnt even want to “go down that road” with the 3rd. This makes WiiU one of the weakest consoles this current gen, beaten by the PS3 that smoothly runs Frostbite2 in Battlefield.

          • ludist210

I wouldn’t believe them too much. DICE never had any intention of taking the Wii U seriously, so did they even try to optimize it past the first tests?

CryEngine 3 runs just fine on the Wii U (Shadow of the Eternals), so I don’t see why FrostByte 3, let alone 2, couldn’t do the same.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            Maybe you are right…

          • Elem187

That’s a good point. If the Wii U can handle Cryeng3 (which the visuals are so much better than frostbyte 3) then there is no reason the Wii U couldn’t do it.
either that or Frostbyte 3 is so darn bloated an inefficient.

          • Elem187

If FB3 is running on PS360, then the Wii U will run it in spades…. DICE is just trying to brush it off without giving the real reason because it looks terrible (The install base is too tiny at the moment)
From a PR perspective, its better to say the hardware can’t handle it rather than say “We don’t feel we will make our money back if we spend time/money porting it”

    • Guest

More Studio before think WiiU is a joke.
but now they see WiiU is only console with a big change and on Nintendo old games in HD version will sale more to other consoles
And on nintendo console has more RPG and Horror games

and wolfenstein is based on all myth to the Nazi

    • Metal_Man_v2

This is Pete Hines. The same guy who couldn’t give any information on the Skryim DLC or why it was taking so long for the PS3. He would always reply that he doesn’t make the DLC, or it’s not his area, so he doesn’t know. As the VP, he is perfectly capable of getting that information. However, Bethesda has always been close lipped and sketchy.

  • I don’t see no reason why it wouldn’t be on the Wii U. It’s kind of annoying that Wii U owners have to worry if it’s coming to the system all the time when it only says “Next Gen”

    • bizzy gie

Exactly. It kind of bugs me that when a 3rd party gets announced for Wii U, it’s big news. It’s the regular for other consoles. Why are we the ONLY ones who have to worry about getting games that are practically guaranteed on all other platforms?

      • Gary

Since the Wii U has been a major flop (In terms of sales atm *Fingers crossed for a 3DS style turn around) and in the past 3rd parties haven’t really been successful on nintendo consoles in that sense why should they take a risk of losing money when they can wait for someone else to try and see if it fails.

        • D.M.T

Wii U is only a “major flop” compared to Wii at launch in 2006 but it’s not doing too bad in general

          • Elem187

Its still early. Nintendo thought they could lean on 3rd parties to fill out their schedule, and look at what happens.
Nintendo’s two biggest mistakes was terrible planning to get more first party titles on the system earlier and giving so much time for 3rd parties to shine.
Both of those bit Nintendo in the rear. But the second half of the year is going to rock 😉

        • Well if you think the Wii U is a Major Flop then the Next Xbox is going to be a disaster for Microsoft in so many ways.

          • Gary

Well I think the only console I will own for the next gen is a Wii U anyways since the next box seems kind of sketchy atm with always online and no ability to play 360 games. Also, I expect all console sales to be a “flop” at launch :). @D.M.T That is true but many third party developers are stuck on the concept of the wii U being as underpowered as the Wii was but I don’t see how they could get games to work well on the 360/PS3, which is very outdated tech, and still call the Wii U to underpowered to run some games now. I’m sure some tweaking to the engine could get it to run well enough but then again why would they make ports of older games.

I generally don’t care for much of the third parties the main reason I get a nintendo console is for the amazing games that come out <3 Zelda/SSB's/Mario. In the end if I'm given the choice to get a game for the Wii U or my 360 I would probably go for the Wii U in order to try and boost sales (As little as that effect may be).

        • bizzy gie

I guarantee you if the PS4 and next Xbox flop worse than the Wii U, they’ll both still receive much stronger 3rd party support.

        • Wii U has sold more in 6 months than PS3 or XBOX 360 did after their launch, look up the numbers. Just GOOGLE. Also 3DS had a slow start, now it’s a market leader in its own league.

Nintendo consoles all combined sells more than any other manufacturer out there as we speak. Nintendo has £6.7 ($10.5) billion in the bank and, even if making big losses every year, their nest egg would keep the company going until 2052. That’s like, 40 years away. So, NOT to worry. Nintendo RWLZ, OK? 🙂

          • PS. Btw, have you ever heard of a Nintendo console having heat or noise problems – or having quality issues? I guessed it, no. Same thing cannot be said about Sony or Microsoft – and THAT counts as well. Not only “power”. Power is only as good as how it is used (programmed). Huge power don’t mean good games. Again, just look at 3DS -vs- Vita?

          • Gary

Well regardless of how Nintendo is faring in sales atm it seems third parties are shunning the Wii U and regardless of that I’ll enjoy me Zelda games and the Wii games I missed out on since I didn’t bother getting a Wii. Also what is a Nintendo RWLZ?o.o

And with regards to the quality issues I can agree with that in terms of my 360 compared to the Wii U it is dead silent the Wii U has almost no noticeable noise output and I don’t have to worry about red rings but for the Wii U I believe it had a problem with bricking.

@bizzy gie It’s sad but that will most likely be true :(.

  • Even more good news gimme more moooooreeeeeee

I need a rob fighter on my wii u.

  • Once the NDA is lifted and the next Xbox is officially revealed, expect numerous release dates for games coming to next-gen consoles. We’ll see then if Wolfenstein: The New Order makes it to the Wii U or not.

    • Wii U is Next Gen so really your comment doesn’t make much sense

      • Zombie Boy

I think he means that developers will then reveal if THEY think the Wii U is next gen or not. From some articles I’ve read, some do think it’s next gen but some others don’t. But we’ve had a few devs say now that they aren’t thinking about next-gen conversions yet, when asked about the Wii U, but they haven’t made it clear whether they include the Wii U under that heading or not.

      • You obviously don’t remember Bethesda’s comments or what happened to Watch Dogs…

      • Elem187

But he’s right, there is a few devs out there that don’t consider Nintendo’s console “nextgen”, so its going to be on a case by case basis of which devs think the Wii U is nextgen, and which do not.

I personally think its stupid because the word generation has always delineated a time frame.

  • Pass lol

  • uPadWatcher

I hope that Bethesda releases Wolfenstein: The New Order for the Wii U. If they approves it, they need to add the overall quality to achieve that Nintendo Seal.

  • Considering that Doom 64 was the first game I ever played, and Hexen the second, iD-style games have a special place in my heart.

    • Andrew Nielsen

Hexen wii u … that would be awesome.

  • jeffp3456

If it comes to the WiiU I will pick it up, I also really enjoyed the last one and Bethesda usually does good work (although buggy).

    • Nintendofreak

cough cough skyrim cough dragons that fly backwards cough

      • Metal_Man_v2

*cough* *cough* games that aren’t completeable and require patch support day one *cough* *cough*

        • Zorlac79

*cough* *cough* F’n awesome game that I *cough* completed with minimal issues *cough*

          Bugs like ZombiU???

I loved the last Wolfenstein, will definitely get it be it on Wii U or 360.

          • Adrian

I didn’t hit any ZombiU bugs. I did hit tons of Skyrim bugs though. Skyrim was way too easy though. I lost interest because my characters always became pimpin strong after about 15-20 hours of play.

          • Elem187

The lead platform was PC, it ran great there.
the frame rate issues on the PS3 version were even worse than backward flying dragons.
            15 fps is pitiful.

        • Arthur Jarret

I almost wanted to *cough* Duke nukem and Aliens *cough* – then I realized that was Gearbox… why do I always confuse the two?

  • Ducked

The Wii U needs this game. The Wii U’s biggest 3rd party games there getting so far is Black list, Watch Dogs, and AC4 Black Flag. But, all of the games I just mentioned are by Ubisoft. The Wii U needs more 3rd party games from other developers. If Bethesda finds success with the Wii U then hopefully other 3rd party developers will find interest in the Wii U.

    • jcnba28

You left out Call of Duty Ghosts, Rayman Legends and Batman Arkham Origins. But I agree the more games the better!

      • Ducked

But Rayman Legends is based off a 1769 mansion that got destroyed by a waterspout.

        • jcnba28

Eh yes it is. Ubisoft are developing the game.

          • Ducked

        • Guest

Quick! Delete the comment before anyone else sees it!

          • ConCity Soldier

        • jcnba28

LOL you changed your comment. Fail.

          • Ben Kapferer

Looks like somebody doesn’t have a sense of humor!

      • Ben Kapferer

We don’t know for sure if Call of Duty: Ghosts is coming to Wii U or not.

        • david jarman

The wii u logo is on there.

          • Ben Kapferer

Wasn’t the website the logo was on confirmed fake by Activision?

This reminds me of the movie “Iron Sky”. But it is about Space Nazis and it is pretty funny.

    • RyuNoHadouken

      that movie is so corny….lol

  • Gabe Hoffman

Interesting Fallout would be good fit for Wii U as well

  • Archiq09

    I want Wolfenstein on WiiU!
FPS is rarelly on WiiU and WWll fps is better fps 😀

    • Andrew Nielsen

what do you mean rarely? its been out six months and they got black ops, 007, zombiu, and sniper 2 and walking dead. you really could say games in general are rarely on wii u

      • Archiq09

sniper v2 is a tps but a good game :3, walking dead no commentary and 007 have good story but multiplayer has not private match or friends group and server lag…

        Wolfenstein story I like it!

      • Jo M’s Mommy

ZombiU is a survival horror in the first person perspective, not a FPS.

  • wober2

That pic reminds me of dishonored, and how very much I would like wolfenstein to have a world like dishonored… minus the whales.

  • Arthur Jarret

Return to castle wolfenstein was one of the first fps you ever played??? Wow, you’re young… I’m of the wolfenstein 3D / Spear of destiny generation myself ^_^

    • Zombie Boy

I used to play Pacman when it was in the arcades and my home system – made by Binatone – played games like Pong… and other versions of Pong :O

      • Arthur Jarret

So funny, my company is doing business with Binatone on a regular basis. (In telephony – which has been their main market for quite a while now)

What’s the name of the system? I’m very interested in their history in home consoles – I’d love to ask them if they still have a sample of their retro computer system.

        • Zombie Boy

It was the TV Master. It was the first games console I ever owned (at the age of 7 or 8).
After that I moved onto the Spectrum 48k and that’s when I really began to get into gaming (at the age of 10 or 11). This is why I find the gen wars so funny, with people going on about graphics etc. When these are your roots, you learn to appreciate that gameplay and fun are more important than graphics.

          • Arthur Jarret

I’ll check to see if anyone working at Binatone today still knows about their roots. Seems interesting.

I know what you mean about the constant (media-only) battle to be no.1 – it was already ridiculous in the Genesis / SNES days (my teen years) and it is more ridiculous now that the market has expanded and there’s enough room for three systems & companies to do very well.

I still have as much fun with my original Game & Watches than I have with my PS3. (Especially as my G&W’s need regular repair, which is like… the best part of it ^_^).

The Wii U is taking a major chunk of my free time now, though… I blame Monster Hunter.

          • Zombie Boy

Actually, I owned a Game & Watch (Donkey Kong) before the Binatone. I used to play it non-stop!

    • Elem187

The original Wofl 3D was great… Spear of Destiny was kinda, meh because of all the other shooters that were being developed after Wolf 3D paved the way.

      • Arthur Jarret

I know what you mean. My favorite is still the first one I actually finished: Rise of the triad. I love the dual rocketlauncher!

I heard they were doing another one a while back… haven’t heard anything since the first announcement, though.

  • Johny

it would be amazing. i LOVED ALL WOLFENSTEIN !! omg now that was some good fps. and one of the first ones too (if not the first)… loved return to castle too.. aah.. the times when generic shooters didnt exist.

  • Nicolas Dorion

“Return to Castle Wolfenstein 3D was one of the first FPS games I ever played and enjoyed” probably because it was THE first FPS game ever, just saying

    • ICHI

Wolfenstein 3D was one of the first Return to Castle Wolfenstein was the first online FPS I played for the original XBoX and it sold me on console online gaming it was so good. Wolfenstien for the XBOX360 by Raven was totally shit though, they ruined it like they ruined Quake. id shouldn’t let others touch their ip’s and because of that I’m not interested in this yet……….I do hope it will be good, but not getting those hopes up too high until I see more.

  • Frank

Hopefully this will freshen up fps. Why not? You play in first-person in the elder scroll and fallout series. This should be cake.

  • ConCity Soldier

I want to see some gameplay footage of it first. Nice trailer though…

  • ConCity Soldier

Bethesda! Please make a Fallout 4 Wii U version.

    • That would actually work better on Wii U. The Wii U gamepad can be used as a Pip-boy meaning the gameplay would be a lot more fluent.

      • Zombie Boy

I thought this too (admittedly while playing it on the PC). I imagined using the Wii U gamepad as a Pip-boy and thought it would make an awesome conversion. If Wolfenstein does well on the system, then it may well happen 🙂

  • Mc Robins

Ugh… Sorry Wii U I effin love you to death and you could use the 3rd party support. But this one is a PC pick up for me. I still play Wolfenstein ET from time to time. It just wouldn’t feel right for me on a console. Hope you all enjoy it though!

  • Elem187

Strickly for Nostaglia reasons alone I would buy it…. When all my friends were playing Mario/Sonic and arguing whos faster, I was playing the original PC shooters Wolfenstein 3D/ROTT/Heretic/Doom (what took consoles so long to get into FPS?)

  • JBeauregard

I may have just wet myself with excitement!
