We’ve had unconfirmed reports of the Wii U hitting a nice sales increase since the launch of the Wind Waker HD bundle, but private investment firm Wedbush lends a bit more credibility to that with a report that the console has sold 55k units or so since September. That’s a 79% increase month over month for Wii U sales, but it’s still fallen short of what Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 pull in during the same period. It should be noted however that the Wii U is on a definite rise and the Wind Waker HD bundle has done a great job in both North America and the United Kingdom in getting people to purchase a Wii U. local_offer Nintendo wii u wind waker hd zelda wii u stars Further Reading Legendary Pokemon coming to Pokemon Go The cost of Nintendo consoles in today's dollars Wii U gets firmware update Watch the Smash 4 EVO Finals on Disney XD Take a peek at this week’s Nintendo Dow 9 things you probably didn't know about Super Mario Bros. HSN1 If we manage to have a game like this at least every few months the Wii U will gain enough momentum to sell a lot more IMO Ace This is awesome as this game is a remake! Just wait till the heavy hitters come (Mario 3D World, Smash, MK8). mar laguna Remember that there´s still donkey kong, bayonetta 2 and X Mr. J And in the distance ZELDA!!!! Ace Oh yes, I remember. I just listed those as examples. mar laguna We dont need to be afraid of failure because there are still great games coming and that if the wii u dosen´t have that much power but still has the best games Ace Not afraid of failure. I know that the Wii U will be fine. This is typical of the first year for a home console. harelsen don’t forget nintendo stopped making copies of this game 7 years ago though :p Lusunup Wow and that was just a port as well, I can’t imagine the big titles that are coming out this year and next year. Adam Porter Just a port, JUST A PORT!!!! WW is hands down the best game on wiiU Ducked No, DISNEY PLANES is!!!!!! Josiah Parsons Dude, Seriously? Controls were ok, but the game itself was subpar. Ducked It’s sarcasm harelsen kinda hard to read sarcasm though :p Daniel Gonzalez True enough. It’s usually good to ask before assuming. Ducked true Josiah Parsons Great Sarcasm! (The game was actually kinda good, non sarcasm.) Ducked I haven’t played the game, so I really don’t know Wayne Beck That’s a bold statement. Don’t get me wrong, I love WWHD, but there is a very good chance Rayman Legends is the best game on Wii U. Arthur Jarret Monster hunter is the best game on any platform it has appeared on, that includes Wii U. There’s also wonderful 101 Then the gorgeous but way too easy rayman legends Then comes that 6 months tested overpriced gamecube upscale Most of the digital games offer an awesome value for price, though, and some great games are coming! harelsen we are talking about wind waker the game… don’t think about the wii u edition, rather just wind waker as a game 😛 i personally liked wind waker a lot more than rayman legends 🙂 Arthur Jarret Windwaker the game has a somewhat dated design (makes sense for a 10 yr old game) and seems extremely limited in variety compared to similar structured games such as Darksiders 1/2 or the series own Twilight Princess and Skyward sword. It’s a great game, but misses the addictive nature and replayability of monster hunter, the robust leaderboard-based design and multiplayer lending to replayability of Rayman or the challenge, humor and spot-on controls that reviewers didn’t seem to understand of W101. Magnus Eriksson WW IS overpriced! I agree so much with that, but get so much hate from saying it too 😀 Arthur Jarret People are so quick to wield the T-word like a holy sceptre whenever someone with a differing opinion comes along… iamserious You troll!!! Lol Rinslowe I happen to agree with the both of you, lol. 😛 harelsen yeah, but to a lot of people, it’s their first time playing the game. to them, it’s not a port. it’s a completly new game! 😀 considering it has now been 11 years since it came out for the gamecube and about 7 years since nintendo stopped making copies of it 🙂 there have been no way for newer generations to play that game! anyone here like the name: nintendo SLATE U? Zuxs13 How can it be a “year over year” sales increase? the Wii U wasn’t out this time last year.. Magnus Eriksson I swear. Wrote the same thing. And on a definite rise sounds a bit suspicios. This we dont know yet, only 2 weeks into the game. But anyways. Its good than the console sells better now than the previous months. Zuxs13 thought maybe i just hadn’t had my coffee yet this morning. Ace I noticed that too, but even still an increase is still good. I am just sick of hearing all the crap about doom and gloom and blah blah blah. It is going to sell well this Holiday season as it will have great games coming and be the most affordable (on-top of being family friendly). Zuxs13 Im pessimistic that the Wii U will do well this holiday. My reasoning is it is doing terrible in Japan. A price drop, bundles, release of a Zelda game (although Zelda typically doesnt to great there) the impending Monster Hunter game there, and Dragon Quest etc and the system still hasn’t taken off there at all. Magnus Eriksson You are a sober guy. Thats good. And Nintendo needs to hear the concerns from their fans. Not senseless chearing from fanboys who denies the reality. Magnus Eriksson Im sick and tired of hearing everyone else talking about doom and gloom as soon as they hear some justified criticism against Wii U too. The only one I hear uses this word is fanboys who denies to see the facts that Nintendo is struggling with the Wii U. Its kind of sad. If you are a fan you should want whats in the best interest instead of closing your eyes and deny that the reality exists. 55K is a very good number as the Wii U have been struggling, but its still a bad number. It only means 110K in month, Thats STILL ridiculous low number (about 1.5M consoles a year if it could hold this momentum for a year). Ashley King Sorry, that was my derpiness. It should have been month over month. It’s now been fixed. Zuxs13 oh ok lol thought i was just not a wake. Is there a link to the source for this? Ashley King It’s linked in the article. Zuxs13 duh, my bad. thought it was a link to Wind Waker review lol. thanks Magnus Eriksson Makes better sense 🙂 Nicolas Eddowes Well, I’m pretty sure it will sell more than PS4/Xbox One Yousif Alromaithi I really don’t think so but maybe. Well let us see. ItzameyaToad I mean if PS4 and Xbox One can do better than they did last gen then I could see them maybe selling more than Nintendo but I do think Nintendo will dominate them in sales at least through 2014. Really though it doesn’t matter which console sells more what matters is if the fans where happy with there purchase/good games and if the company made a profit from the console through it’s cycle both of which Nintendo has aced with almost all of there consoles. Daniel Gonzalez Exactly well put. Who cares who sells more? It was never a war to begin with. All of them have their good experiences. I just happen to like PS4 more at this point. If there are good Wii U games that I like by next year, then I might pick one up too. What’s considered a good game or console is subjective, nothing more. alex toschi it hasn’t been a war since Microsoft and Sony entered the business, and SEGA left consoles to collect dust. Don’t get me wrong, some of my favorite childhood games are on the PS2 and the Xbox 360 had some great titles, but I just wish that the video game business was actually held by video game companies. Microsoft and Sony compete with each other, but they don’t really push each other towards innovation. I’m still excited for the PS4, and will keep an eye out on the Xbox One and Microsoft’s policies and the games they will release, but I miss the days of the Nintendo and SEGA pushing each other to pump out great games. Daniel Gonzalez We all have our idea on what innovation is. While the Wii U’s gamepad is nice and all, I don’t really think of it that innovative considering it looks like a tablet. I’m fine if people like it, but I don’t see it. Just an example there. For me I don’t care who seems more innovative as I’m just interested in games that appeal to me. PS4 in this case does it for me. I think I more or less grew out of a lot of Nintendo franchises and moved on from it. I was all for Wii U, and it looked promising but the third party I can already tell won’t be to the liking of what the PS4 will get. I will pick up a Wii U later on during another price drop. No, I’m not a graphic whore, I do play a lot of indie games with 8 bit visuals. 8 bit days were great come to mention it. Less drama in those days, now crazy fanboys are all over fighting over which console is better. Lol. I do too miss the Nintendo and SEGA rivarly, but those days are over. I think that’s problem with Nintendo at tmes though, they stopped competing. alex toschi I wasn’t claiming Nintendo as innovative, the gamepad was quite clearly an attempt to appeal to the casual gamers who have tablets, I for one think it’s great and has potential to bring in innovative ideas, but the pad itself isn’t a game changer by any means. I was just stating that regardless of what company is your favorite, or if you like PS4 or Xbox One, those are both produced by non-gaming companies. They have other outlets and products they need to worry about, Sony with televisions and electronics and Microsoft with computer hardware and software. They aren’t gaming companies, so at the end of the day I don’t think that they necessarily will care or prioritize catering to gamers. They will try to increase profits by rehashing stories and gameplay, and overdoing genres. Sure there are some amazing titles on these platforms, but many of them are the standard driver, EA sports game (don’t get me started on EA), and FPS. While that’s all fine and good if that’s what you enjoy I’m quite tired of it. I think that presence of these two juggernauts of companies muscling there way into the market and changing the game has lead to Nintendo becoming a niche company that appeals to many older gamers, and the younger generation. They no longer compete against anyone because they don’t compete with Sony or Xbox when it comes to making titles anymore. They compete when it comes to sales, but there isn’t much comparable on the WiiU to the Xbox One or PS4. I think this gap has hurt the gaming community, because Nintendo will continue to do what it does, and Sony/Microsoft will continue to fight over their demographic. That needs to change if we ever want another console war, where we the consumer benefit from the fight to push out the best and most innovative titles that we have never seen before, or that we are just so blown away by that we have to have them. Daniel Gonzalez I agree with most of what you said. Though, I don’t agree with what you said about Sony and Microsoft games, there are plenty of games there that are quite unique. Then again, we each see things differently, so there’s that too. It would be nice if Nintendo stopped being a niche company and started to be competitive again. It would at least give me a reason to go back. Though, at this point in time, I don’t think Nintendo will change anytime soon. For them, being a niche company is the norm. alex toschi I did mention that there were some amazing titles on both platforms, but they hardly get the commercial attention that they deserve. Sony and Microsoft both have produced great titles on their respective consoles, but my point is at the end of the day they aren’t gaming companies, so they themselves don’t care which game they are selling they are just going to market the game that will sell the most. Microsoft even increased the xbox live membership price to cut a portion of it to Activision, because of the Call of Duty craze. That just seems to me a company that cares more about profiting off consumer and appeasing the company that basically sells their consoles. the reason almost every 20 something and teen had an Xbox 360 was because of Call of Duty. they wouldn’t have sold nearly as many consoles if not for that franchise, but the same goes for the causal titles for the Wii. Which just continues to prove my point that the video game industry has become something much different, and I’m not sure I’m so keen on the direction it is going. alex toschi I am really looking forward to the PS4 launch, it seems to me that we both are. I will always be happy with any console as long as i agree with the practices of the company behind it and see titles that i Want to purchase. So I hope i’m not written off as a fanboy in your eyes. Magnus Eriksson But one objective measure is the actual sales. That also indicates what kind of games that can be produced on that console. So low sales numbers affects the games. Still, if Nintendo was able to make a good flirt with the indies it could still be relevant for gamers like me. Nicolas Eddowes PS4/Xbox One is going to launch when the Wii U will have Mario 3D World, Wii U Party, Sonic Lost World, Wii Fit U, etc. It will have the best offer considering upcoming titles on Wii U and a few launch titles on X1/PS4, and I think development time will be less than next-gen games on PS4 or Xbox One. I expect more exclusives on Wii U from third party soon. I feel like next-gen games will suffer delays constantly. I believe in both upcoming consoles, and I’m interested on them and on games like Kingdom Hearts 3, and maybe I will get one PS4 someday, but I own a Wii U and I believe a lot more on it Yousif Alromaithi Who cares that who will sell more but i never think Nintendo will nail PS4 probably in Japan but in Europe I don’t think so. True it is doing bad in Japan their is no games out for it. But once the games come out it will dominate japan and PS4 might dominate USA leaving only Wii U as a winner on east region. West region hits harder because there are two market shares and more people leaving Nintendo no choice but to lose to PS4. If Wii U Sports came out Nintendo might win but no Wii U Sports no win. Magnus Eriksson How in the world have you been able to deduce this? And if you are correct, that means the death of the console business altogether. So lets not hope this. Daniel Gonzalez Best to reserve judgments. I see PS4 being the better of those two. Mysterious Destiny Why did that comment get thumbs down? It’s extremely likely that the WiiU WILL outsell the PS4 and XO. WiiU has variety and innovation, something that the PS4 and XO don’t. Take a look at the WiiU’s lineup and current selection. Then compare it to PS4 and XO’s lineups. Notice how the WiiU has something for everyone, while the PS4/XO are mainly FPS’s and sports. Despite all the hype the PS4/XO are getting, the WiiU is most likely going to be the most successful because those who want variety and fun will get a WiiU. Arthur Jarret Seeing how all preorders are sold out for both systems… the only way wii u will outsell it’s main competition is if they have a very limited number of consoles. I think the 3DS will dominate the charts of holiday software sales. asdfg I love Nintendo. But come on, don’t be unrealistic. Zuxs13 The 3DS sold nearly 3 times that in one week in Japan alone, This is a possitive direction but this has happened a few times now for the Wii U and it still has failed to catch on. I know Mario 3D world (bad name) will do well, I like the Wii Fit strategy (free game then $25? for the meter). Holiday Bundles will help. If the Wii U doesn’t sell in the millions this fall it will be left behind the rest of the next 4 years. Yousif Alromaithi Left behind no way it will sell but let us be realistic it can make money and even better because people are now optimistic on 3D World. While PS4 and XBOX left Japan for another year. Now Sony made a mistake leaving Japan opened for Wii U, now that the Wii U will debut a game in November which is Taiko no Tatsujin which sold like pancakes on the Wii. Last few months their was a special edition for the Wii game and it managed to reach the top 1. Aside from that Wii U will dominate Christmas on Japan while 3DS take first place whether PS4 or Xbox fans agree or not. On the west PS4 and Xbox will take first place but I am not sure against the Wii U but still 3DS will beat PS4 and Xbox One at Christmas time. Magnus Eriksson How many Wii U consoles do you think Nintendo needs out there to make this generation a successful one? If Nintendo sells 50M units this generation its still counted as a failure. How many consoles do you think Nintendo will sell this generation, and what will sell those consoles? How many consoles do you think Mario Kart 8 and SSBU will sell? The new Zelda in 2015/2016? Fred 50 million is a failure? According to whom? Lil J Moore To trolls of course. Daniel Gonzalez So if I say that 60 million is a failure compared to the 100 million the Wii made would that make me a troll? Where I come from, that’s having an opinion. I think people are too quick to judge these days. Lil J Moore I was joking around. Come on now we don’t have to take things seriously all the time. But in all seriousness I don’t consider 50 M sales a failure specially with economy the way it is now. How the WiiU got into the 3 mils so quickly is still a surprise to me Magnus Eriksson It doesnt really matter how you feel about it. If its a failure its a failure. Its quite objective. Lil J Moore Ha. I still don’t think it’s a failure. Magnus Eriksson So its not objective? If I feel that SEGA didnt fail, then they didnt fail? Daniel Gonzalez Hard to tell with how crazy some people get on here, especially when your opinion differs or isn’t to their liking. Lol. 3 million to me is bad when you look where they are at now. I do agree that 50 million isn’t bad, but some might call it failure compared to where the Wii was. We all have our own idea on what is success and failure. My honest opinion is that 360, ps3 and Wii had their own success. Daniel Gonzalez Anyone who sees it as such? Is having a different view on things so bad? Magnus Eriksson In this generation it is estimated that a console must sell AT LEAST 50M to remain profitable. You could just look into Nintendos own forecasts. The first financial year ended in March 2012, where the forecast was 5.5M sold. They revised it to 4M but was unable to reach that level. The next forecast was 10M ending around christmas. Remember that this is only the first 14 months, and they had a vision for 15.5M totally (probably higher as the second forecast was revised after the first one.). If a Nintendo console is built for 6 years, and it first two forecasts for a 14 months period was 15.5M that shows that Nintendo had a thought about at least 1.1M every month. Without any peaks (should happen in the mid-life of the console) at all this would mean 13.2M every year for six years. That is 79.2M consoles for the whole period. This is the LOWEST number, based on Nintendos own forecasts, as it doesnt take growth into concideration. This is the lowest number Nintendo had for Wii U. And how does this number compares with reality? Lets be generous. This year so far it sold 3.8M including the first forecast, articles like this one above, does not show that “Nintendorise have begun”, it shows the opposite. But to be generous, lets imagine that by some miracle Nintendo DOUBLES this years sales in the holiday season, making it sell 7.5M for a 14 months period. That is half the number of a three times revised forecast for two periods (15.5M). If this miracle would happen every year forr six years (still counting out peaks and growth as we did in the last example) it will make less than half of the lowest estimated number Nintendo came up with. Less than 40M consoles. If you dont see that this means a failure, then you must ask your self. Is Nintendo straight out fucking their fans? If they still would make money out of that. Then clearly they are. Fred Their forecast isn’t the fewest they can sell and remain profitable. It’s the number they think they are actually going to sell. Just because they missed that number doesn’t mean that they won’t be profitable. However I would argue that it means more of their gmae developers will make games for 3DS which is selling well. Magnus Eriksson Fred: If you dont like listen to reason there is little I can do. The only thing we have to deduce from is past experiences (induction is a better word). Of course no one knows what the future might bring (All swanes are white its proved wrong with one black swane, true. But still most of the swanes are white). Maybe SONY and Microsoft turns bankrupt tomorrow by some incident that no one could predict. Maybe Nintendo release some secret game in the holidays that takes off as an eyeopener for every sceptic of the pad. You never know things like that. But its like the lottery, you cannot base predictions on things like that, you have to base them in reality. And the reality is that a) Nintendo is doing really bad with the Wii U right now. b) there is not anything in the nearest future that have a realistic chance to turn that around. c) Nintendo has basically no 3rd party support to back them up Based on those two premises, Wii U will do bad in the future too. Fred Don’t listen to reason? Are you even reading what I’m typing? a-I never said the Wii U was doing good right now b-you don’t know that (see mario 3D, SSB, Mario Kart, X, Wii Fit U, Party U), but you might be right c-I agree, although I don’t find that to be a dealbreaker as long as Nintendo continues to make top notch games d-my 2 points were I wanted to know what makes selling under 50 million consoles a failure (I don’t consider the SNES, N64 or the Game Cube to be failures and none of them sold 50 million consoles) e-and my last point was not hitting their console sales projection doesn’t automatically mean they are losing money (I didn’t say the Wii U side isn’t losing money as it might be) especially considering the fact that they are losing money when they sell a console. How much money they make on Wii U is more directly tied to how many games they sell Yes I listen to reason very well you just have to listen (read) what people are saying. Yousif Alromaithi I believe Nintendo will sell 40-50 million by 2016. 3DS will sell over hundred million by 2016. If Wii U sports came it will sell like millions trust me because I do believe that Magnus. Now if I say Nintendo will sell about 350 thousands units alone by November and this will be when Mario comes out so will you call me a lair. Because if i did I will remind you that you were wrong. I was right. Zuxs13 There has been no indication theat the WiiU will dominate Japan this Xmas. Current sales are around 5k a week. the 3DS sells that in about 12 hrs, and the PS3 (6 years old) sells that in 2 days. Sure there are games on the way, but bundles, Zelda, a price drop and all those games on the Way Still have not ignited the sales in Japan. We are in the “holiday” sales season now, and 4 weeks away from Mario’s release date and the sales are still not trending upward, just sales spikes. Yousif Alromaithi Alright it is up to you but hear this by the end of the year Wii U will dominate Christmas Japan on consoles and 3DS will dominate through handheld. Zuxs13 It can not dominate anything if there isnt any competition (next Gen) At the rate the Wii U is going, I doubt it will even dominate the PS3 in Japan. Yousif Alromaithi Hmm seems right that PS3 might dominate that I agree which could be true but I think Nintendo made special bundles which in turn that many Japanese have the PS3 so no need for another PS3 and in turn that many Japanese have a 3DS which helps them buy a Wii U nuff said. I am thinking rational and logical which seems to be the truth. Lol. I am not saying Wii U will over take 3DS but rather sell quite like it. Zuxs13 Rational and logic huh? So by your logic everyone in Japan already own a 3DS and PS3 (yet they still keep selling and selling and selling) So this holiday only they will quit buying those and by a Wii U only? hmm sound perfectly logical…. Yousif Alromaithi No no I meant the sales of PS3 were not the same as the year before it went down a bit. Dude I said many not everyone. Since many are looking for Next Generation console the Wii U is available on holiday and the PS4 will be available next year which Nintendo made a smart move and will sell with those bundles. Dude I am thinking logical. Why u can’t see that. Zuxs13 First its hard to take anyone seriously when the use the word “Dude” so much. Second there are still now trends showing people are going to flock to the Wii U in japan this Holiday season. The holiday sales season retail wise began Oct 1st. Sales of the Wii U in Japan are still bellow 5k a week (which is terrible the PS3 is almost triple that). Also polls show little interest in the Wii U in Japan. So again logic says they wont flock to it. people buy consoles to play games not to sit there and look at them. PS3 and 3DS have games, tons of games, the Wii U does not. Yousif Alromaithi Okay. That. Is your opinion I respect that. oregano How is Suoer Mario 3D World anything but a good name? Zuxs13 Its a mouthfull for starters. ‘Hey mom i want Super Mario 3D world for the Wii U this Xmas’ “What?” . Magnus Eriksson It plays on a game made for the handheld. It could easy be thought of as a port from 3D handheld to home console. Brand awareness does not always work in this industry if its not spot on. Super Mario 3D Land 2 would be a better name that way. Or Super Mario World 2 without the 3D. oregano I can see where your coming from. I like the play on the oldschool. Land was gameboy. World console. And they are very similar games in style of Mario so connecting them makes sense. I think any confusion as to it being a 3ds game will only lead them to the Wii U anyway. Thoughts? Ony Next year, we will joke about the ‘Wii U fail’, while Nintendo outsell the original Wii with his masterpiece. Just like the 3DS did. yeah. <3 Zuxs13 I hope that is the case, but i seriously doubt it will be. Magnus Eriksson The thing is that the 3DS/WiiU analogy is not a very good one. It could have been an argument 6 months ago, now its not comparable at all. Nintendo have lost their chance this generation. There is no way that SSBU, Mario Kart and 3D Mario will bring up the sales to a decent level. That is the 10M forecast Nintendo sat for this year + next year (because there is nothing new announced after Mario Kart). Listen to this: Do you think Mario 3D World will bring up the sales to 10M at the end of this year? Not a chance. That is 6M new console buyers alone. One game cannot do that. Mario Kart Double Dash sold 7M copies all together. This is a comparable number to MK8 because of similar install base. How many consoles did that game move? Some 100.000 maybe? Lets say 1M to be generous. And to be even more generous lets pretend that MK8 will move 1M consoles by that game too. That is 4M Wii U grows to 5M. Every fifth buyer who buys the game also buys a console. Realistic? Hardly not… SSBU? Compare that to Melees 7M+.. To be equally generous one extra M. The future does not look very good for Wii U. gtosheex You speak of all these “M’s” what about Metriod: Other M? Ony At first it was all hateress forward this game, then I replayed again, and hate became disappointment, because it could be so DAMN GOOD! There was so much potential in this game, but nooo, Sakamoto was all “Let’s make a big arsed girl wheening, with NO exploration and a bad remake of Metroid Fusion”. D: Ony Let’s… let’s just keep some positive hope. Yes, indeed, it will be hard, and 10M in a year seem a difficult goal relative to the absence of big games that would makes buy somes Wii U. I also agree with you that only like, 4 big games are coming (Mario, DK, Kart and SSB) and it’s clearly NOT enough to propel the Wii U high enough. And now I’m sad *sob* Daniel Gonzalez I think the same way Magnus does, that we’re being realists. I’m for hope and being positive when I deem it necessary. I do admire your positive and hopeful outlook on things, sometimes we need that to get through life and the harsh reality of it. Yeah, there’s not a lot of big games this year, but we’ll see if that changes. WarioForever I really hope so! FTW! Daniel Gonzalez Doubtful. At this point, I don’t think 100 million is possible. Also, did you just say that 3DS outsold the Wii? Ony Yes, yes. I know, 97 millions of Wii U in a year is clearly impossible. But still, I really hope it will have enough sucess to shut the mouth of all jerks that sing the fail of the Wii U. And the 3DS outsold the Wii sales in Japan recently, but I was mainly talking about it great success, even with a bad (yet better then the Wii U) start. harelsen i just think nintendo did not pay their advertisement board enough :p harelsen does it not seem confusing with peripherals like the wii fit? and the wii u xD …wii plus ^^ all of that, pluss the fact that it all looks so similar and the bad advertisements, is a good foundation for making yourself irrelevant… …im getting alot of downvotes :3 Daniel Gonzalez That usually happens when you don’t praise the Wii U or what Nintendo does. Remember Gudleifson, you can only talk positively, and being neutral doesn’t help either, they hate that. 😛 Ony Their body wasn’t ready :° Daniel Gonzalez Why would you care what they think though? Lol. Let people talk. There’s more amusement that way. Besides, if you’re happy with the Wii U, then it shouldn’t matter much. As much as I don’t care too much for what the Wii U is offering right now, I certainly don’t want it to fail considering I have good intentions to invest in one later on. I’m thinking more along the lines of 50-60 million. Not as much as Wii but still a success number nonetheless. Ony I care because others peoples, that don’t have an opinion of the Wii U, will heard more by the wieners than the fans. The bad opinion spread, in addition of the almost zero awarness of what is the Wii U and tada! Poor sales. Everybody talks positively > Nobody talks > Jerks split on it I see it like that. Daniel Gonzalez If people are easily lead on to what other people think, then they were lost to begin with. Least that’s how I see things. Besides, not everyone will talk positively. You can’t have positives without the negatives to balance it out. There’s always two sides of the story and that’s how it will always be. I understand that you want people to be aware of the console, but that’s not up to us. People make their own decisions, and if they are going by just another’s opinion without thinking about it or doing research, so be it. That’s how life is. You have positive, negative, jerks, and middle ground people/neutrals(which I consider myself). Plus people aren’t buying cause they aren’t aware of the Wii U as a new console, but a good chunk of them are also not buying simply because they aren’t interested in it. Like someone said on here, that’s just blind speculation based on ones hope. Don’t always believe what you read in articles. Only way to know why people won’t buy a Wii U would be to ask every consumer in the world, which I doubt is the case here. Articles only tell you half the truth, and the rest is to lay it on thick to sell their story. In my opinion, ask people around you, you’d get a better analysis that way of what they know about the Wii U, news won’t give you that. I do agree with some of what you said, that I’m sure there’s a good percentage of people who don’t know the differences of a Wii U and Wii, but I doubt it’s the majority that most insist it to be. Magnus Eriksson You know what, I hope the same thing. Vicar In Ubuntu Right now the Wii U is at a little over half of what Gamecube was selling at this point in its life, and that pulled about 21.7m total. We’re also on the cusp of 2 brand spanking new consoles. You can hate on them all you want, but you can’t deny they’ll be hogging the spotlight for the next couple years. It would have to be nothing short of miraculous to get even a third of the Wii’s total sales. Even Gamecube totals are overly optimistic. Ony The fate of the others two doesn’t concern me at all, there is absolutely no hate forward them, I just don’t care. I just want the Wii U to be successful, like Nintendo said, they don’t enter in the console war, so why bother ? Maybe the Wii U will sell more than the GameCube, maybe not, at this time something is sure, it will not outsold the Wii. But it an still be successful. And if there is still hope, I can still dream about a new Metroid by Retro <3 Adam Porter what are you people on about 55k in 2 weeks is nothing, it’s laughable how some people here are so deluded. Magnus Eriksson Agree! Its actually sad news. Guest yep Ducked Yeah, 55k isn’t very impressing. Although the economy sucks in all fairness. Adam Porter you guys realize that’s less than 3 million a year, lets put that perspective, 3million a year for the consoles lifespan of 7 years is only 21 million, lets say nintendo somehow double sales, 42 million consoles, that’s still pretty poor. Adam Porter why downvote my comment can’t you guys handle the truth?? Nintenjoe82 I upvoted to balance it out. It is US sales only so the absolutely phenomenal Japanese sales will bring it up to….. uh oh! Shota 55k isn’t much but its better then the previous sales. But it will get better once people realize its a new console and there are new games coming. Adam Porter we’ve been saying that same tired old line now for nearly a year, face it people aren’t catching on. Shota advertisement went bad ,i agree. but such a great console shouldn’t be left out. NINTENDO ADVERTISE!! Nintedward Well, there’s other things to take into consideration… Holiday season sales usualy shift a million on their own, as can certain big hitting games. Vicar In Ubuntu Forget 21m, Nintendo will be lucky if the Wii U total sales even reaches Dreamcast levels (10m) Falcoxcalibur Good. Nintendo should be also working on other HD ports, for example the Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 would look great on Wii U and would be relatively fast to develop. Adam Porter but why? we already played those games a short while ago there is no need, we need new games. Daniel Gonzalez New IPs would be nice too. Fred Wonderful 101 is an excellent new IP Magnus Eriksson The remake hangup Nintendo have is a sign of stagnation. Unable to produce games for the pad prooves this even more. Fred They remade 1 game. When they remade ocarina of time and star fox for 3DS it wasn’t because they couldn’t figure out any more games for the 3DS it was them trying to get a few games out faster. Wind Waker was a game they knew would sell (I bought it) and it only took 6 months to make. They haven’t hit stagnation (at least I hope I’m right because I love the games that use the gamepad) Magnus Eriksson I didnt buy my Wii U to play games I played before. Daniel Gonzalez True story. That and you can play those games on Wii U anyways. It’s not really worth development time just to port them to Wii U. If you see Galaxy remakes, it won’t be for several years. Fred Holy crap. I can’t believe it, but I’m agreeing with you Daniel. In fact, I never played Mario Galaxy and last week I went to Best Buy and bought it and I’ve been playing in on my Wii U. When I’m done with it, I’ll probably go back and buy Galaxy 2. So as long as they’re still available to buy they don’t need to waste resources doing HD remakes of them. Magnus Eriksson Excactly. They look good as they do too. Lil J Moore So what does that say about the Ps3, Ps4, and 360/1? You can buy old school games and remakes that are just HD touch-ups on those systems. I buy systems to play games whether they are Remakes, ports, betas, and new games. At least remakes on Nintendo’s console are far better then the original That you can give them credit for.. Magnus Eriksson Why is everybody ask me about PS3, XB360, Vita, Call of Duty and things like that? I dont care about those things. I own a Wii U, and Ive had every Nintendo console up to today except Virtual Boy and 3DS. And those consoles are basically what I have spent my time on. I had ha PSX and PS2 earlier, but I rarely used my PS2. The PS1 was only used for Tekken and Resident Evil. Im thinking about buying a PS3 because of a big library of games I never played. I never cared for the Vita, and I would never spend money on thieves like Microsoft, unless I have to. I never played CoD because I hate war. I like to play games like Metroid, Zelda, 3D Mario, Star Fox, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, or party games with the family. The thing is that because I have supported Nintendo with thousands of thousands of dollars since the eighties I think I am in my full right to criticize them when I see that they fucks up as they have been doing this generation (and the last). Im sick and tired of seeing people defending them no matter what. This is not about console sales only, its about a very bad and ignorant policy inside the company, that started somewhere in the end of the GCN era. I want to support Nintendo with my whole heart until the day that I dies, but they must deserve the support too. This generation they dont deserve it. I hope that will change. The only good thing about Nintendo today is that they rarely listen to their fans, because if they did – they would be doomed for sure. Adam Porter i get ya, it really really annoys me when people blindly defend nintendo, wake up and see the wiiU for what it is, it’s a poorly marketed and out-dated piece of hardware. i don’t blame the second screen, i like the controller alot, it’s just nothing about the wiiU as a gaming machine has made me sit back and say to myself “THIS IS AMAZING”, WW and Super Mario Sunshine did it for me on the GC, mario galaxy, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, monster hunter tri, and even wiiSports did it for me on the Wii, but nothing so far has come close on the WiiU. and that is the biggest problem with the console by far. Magnus Eriksson Agree. And there is basically nothing in the horizon that looks “must-have” either. The only potential game up to today is Zelda U. And of that we didnt hear much but vague rumours. MK8 looks fun enough, but not much more than that. Ive played all in the series before, and it feels like im done with that until something really new shows up. SSBU? Probably good, but still a repetation from SB, Melee and Brawls. I will get them of course, but I dont expect to much of them. Bob Wilkerson If they are going to make new HD ports in their spare time then it should be limited to GameCube or earlier games. I can play Wii games natively on my system already. Michael DeVore You mean October 4th not September. The Linked article is only referring to sales increase since the launch of the Wind Waker HD bundle. The difference is one is about week to one and a half weeks, and the other is 3.7 weeks, nearly a month. The 55K number is most likely just a single week report from NPD, and not a report from the 4th to 15th but from the 4th to 12th. 55K in a month is horrible, and 55K in a week is a good sign, but not great. The original articles reference to September was just to the Console industry revenue as a result of GTA V. Looks like good news, but I’d rather wait till I see the grand total out tomorrow on the 17th. If console sales “increased” and total revenue for the industry is near “flat” then it’s good news for Consoles bad news for the industry. Zuxs13 well the article says its month-over-month sales so regardless if those sales came in one week or all 4 it was 55k total for September. Which is better than previous months but like you said, overall, horrible. Michael DeVore You’re most likely right. I hate these early reports on NPD numbers before they’re officially released. And when you have people watching the WiiU to see how Wind Waker helped or didn’t help screws up the articles, and the data. Wind Wakers boost will be in October numbers and not Septeber unless that entire boose is in the few days of the Japan release. It’s more likely that any increase in sales were due to the Price Drop that took effect in September for some, but even that didn’t hit most people until Oct 4th. Lil J Moore Triple or times this number by 5 or 10 then we’re in business. Sales are getting better and better with more title releases. Great Games Nintendo. It helps InterTreble Well… if Wii U increased its sells ONLY thanks to WW HD and even during GTA V / FIFA Soccer 2014 thunderstorm (PS3 and Xbox360 sold… don’t tell me…), it means just one thing: Nintendo games are more powerful than ever. Please, wait for SSB and Mario Kart 8, then we will start laughing. And I can’t even imagine what will happen when Zelda U is out…. oontz “it means just one thing: Nintendo games are more powerful than ever.” Sorry to burst your bubble but Grand Theft Auto 5 sold over 17 million copies in September alone. Again that’s 17 million vs. Windwakers 55 thousand. If anything your comparison shows the exact opposite: Nintendo games are NOT more than powerful than ever. Also why is it that all Nintendo fanboys always say… “please, wait for _____ and _____” sales aren’t going to magically double when those games come out. The wiiu isn’t the global sensation that the wii was. The sooner you accept that and just start to enjoy playing games, the better you’ll be. InterTreble Sorry but the numbers are meaningless if not related to the install base… 17 milion for a overadviced game over 150 milion 8-years-old-consoles (PS3+Xbox360) is even worse than 400 thousand for a remake over 3,5 million 10-mounths-old consoles (Wii U)… This is the right way to look at the cold numbers, IMHO. This means that good titles sell, always, even if they are remake of a 10 years old game. More… do you know how many copies of Pokemon X / Y have been sold so far? 😉 This is another Nintendo’s brand, and it always outsell. Mario Kart 8 will not sell the 30 milion copies of Mario Kart 7 on Wii, but I’m sure numbers will be however very high. The same for Smash Bros. And don’t underestimate Super Mario 3D World… And I’ll repeat: I can’t imagine what Zelda U will be able to do, if Wind Waker performed in a such good way. Btw I do enjoy all Wii U and 3DS I have, don’t worry… I simply laugh of those people talking no sense about Nintendo product (not you, friend) especially those who have never played or even seen any of them, and speak as they are the Truth… 😉 oontz No the numbers aren’t meaningless. Many wiiu owners own both a wiiu and another system. The numbers clearly show that we chose to buy GTAV instead of Windwaker HD. This shows that Nintendo games are no longer as powerful as they were before. InterTreble I already explained what I mean with meaningless, but unfortunately you didn’t care about. I’m just giving you a suggestion: wait for the “Big” titles and then let’s came back talking about the power of Nintendo. It’s an error lots of people already did with 3DS… 😉 oontz That’s all Nintendo fanboys ever do is say “wait for the “BIG” titles” Well how did Pikmin 3 work out for you, or maybe the wonderful 101? Those were both BIG exclusive titles right? Did they move a ton of Wiiu units? No. I love Nintendo, always have and always will. But enough is enough… Stop saying “you just wait till the big titles come out.” You sound like a broken record. People just aren’t into the wiiu like they were with the wii. That’s not a bad thing. Just accept it and play games to enjoy them. InterTreble Fanboy is who dislikes without listening to what someone says. Are you comparing Pikmin and W101 with Mario and Zelda brands? Seriously? Btw, don’t recommend me to enjoy games, since I’ve already told you I do. This is the actual “broken record”, not my considerations about “big games” which is the feeling of most people and, above all, what really, historically happens. Best regards again, and friends as always. Don’t worry about me, because I’m playing all the day that masterpiece called Wind Waker HD, even if I’ve also bought my copy of GTA V for my old 360… Two giants, two “big games”, but no match for me, at least for my personal tastes! 😉 Daniel Gonzalez Depends on which hardcore gamers you’re talking about. Ducked Most people do there shopping in November bizzy gie Every time I see Wedbush, I think Pachter. Maury I brought this bundle and the wii u is amazing im glad to help support nintendo and the community springer85 LMFAO this another REHASH and they were charging full price for it!! No wonder Wii U sales were still terrible!! Wake up NOTHING will save the gimmick U!! alex toschi Jerry, kindly shut the fuck up. NkoSekirei ignore him hes just a retarded troll with no life Daniel Gonzalez I say let it go. The more he does it, the better people have an understanding what a true troll is. Besides, he won’t shut up anyway. alex toschi You are probably right, I just don’t understand why someone would want to spend precious time naysaying a product people enjoy, and not take the time to even research what they are saying and find out that it is wrong. 00EpicGamer00 Full price? The game costs $40. A regular FULL PRICED Wii U game is $60. The bundle that had the physical game and a Ganondorf figure is $50, but that’s just because it came with a figure. But still, that bundle with the Ganondorf figure is still cheaper than a regular priced Wii U game. So, you get a deal regardless of which one you get. harelsen nintendo SLATE U 😀 i think that would have been an awesome name for the wii u 😛 Yuma Tsukumo I think this just proves that if Nintendo keep releasing good 1st party games, they’ll sell more consoles. 3rd party support isn’t amazing but it’s still there in one form or another, Ubisoft being the most supporting of the Wii U and EA being the worst. In my personal opinion, they need to try and secure more exclusives from 3rd parties. Sonic lost world is looking like a good game and Nintendo funding Bayonetta 2 was really shocking but at the same time, such a good idea. Hope to see more of this 😀 Jon Turner I’m pretty damn sure we will. D-Man If I typed “Playstation 4/Xbox One is better” on here, how much hate would I get? Rinslowe Are these global figures, US or UK only? Or just US and UK? Jon Turner It’s just US. Rinslowe Thanks… Did the article actually mention which region, confirming I really am mentally impaired today? Or is there some saving grace? Jon Turner I’m pretty sure it’s just for America. NPD only tracks American sales. Europe and Japan have their own tracking systems. Rinslowe Thanks again… Jon Turner Keep in mind this counts the last week of September. Next month we’ll see even better numbers. And for everyone lamenting about the low sales in Japan, fear not. The Halloween bundles are coming. I wouldn’t be surprised if these lowered sales are mainly anticipation for said bundles. Marcus Market Very happy for Nintendo 😀 Jared Garcia Good games bring on the sales and this season is packed full of them. Which would you want? A console that’s got a full library of exclusives and multiplatform games or a next generation console that’s full of cross generation games and only a few exclusives? TomcaT MeoW Well, my $0.2 Available games will determine the success or failure of a system. It’s really that simple. If we look at the Wii, DS or 3DS, the games (and awareness of those games) is what made each system break out. Remember that the Wii was far more underpowered against its rivals comparatively speaking than the U is to the PS4 / XBO, though once the market was aware of Wii Sports / Wii Fit, the console sales went crazy, as did the exclusives for it. The DS also had a rough start IIRC as did the 3DS. Remember how the PSP and later Vita were going to crush the DS / 3DS (again due to higher powered hardware)? Well what happened there? Pokemon, DQ9, and other software has lead the way. 3DS picked up when the games were released, same as the DS. For a non-Nintendo example, the PS2 which was the weakest (hardware wise) of the consoles during its gen (though all were roughly in the same class, the PS2 had a primitive graphics pipeline compared to the XB or GC). It had Square (which was riding at the height of the FF brand awareness in the US) and had the advantage of being a cheap DVD player at the time. While the cheap DVD player aspect shouldn’t be ignored, the continued sales of the console were made based on the game content available even after ultra-cheap DVD players hit the market. People tend to have very short memories. While I agree the U isn’t the most powerful hardware this gen I honestly don’t think it matters that much in the grand scheme of things. The U’s first year performance can be attributed to this: It suffered a horrendous game drought. There was arguably one game from Nintendo which would support large sales, which was too close to the release of its predecessor, NSMWU. Combine this with third party support that was non-exclusive and late for the larger games (AC-3 late on the U compared to other platforms, Same for CoD and Batman, and these were only straight ports to boot), and you get terrible sales. Other titles suffered similar problems (NFS for example, while being upgraded compared to it’s PS3 / XB360 releases was very late and again, non-exlcusive). The smaller titles, like ZombiU (loved it, bought on launch day and played the heck outta it), Lego Undercover, etc, need a large install base to do well. Is the U doomed? No. WiiFit U, the re-release of the sports packs with MotionPlus support, and classic-gamer centric releases like MK8, and SSB, and X will create larger sales (I note X in here, because the original Xenoblade has insane levels of hype, and sold through it’s initial limited print insanely fast. Used copies on GS run for $70 _now_). Bayonetta-2 is also highly talked about, though I think titles like B-2 will play a complimentary role more than a console selling role. It has, and always will, come down to the games. WWHD is a stop-gap measure. Nintendo itself said as much. They needed to get releases out on the U and this was one way to do so. Think about it this way: we’re discussing the effects of a title with a 6 month development cycle. Let that sink in when we’re discussing Nintendo’s business sense. I think we’re going to see a much more aggressive Nintendo with regards to the U once the larger titles hit. martinrock I want to buy it next week. In your opinion, should I wait another pack? Maybe at Christmas? martinrock There is no one? LinkSmash Let me start off by saying I love the hell out of Nintendo and my Wii U, it’s really all I play these days. However, I don’t see Nintendo getting close to the Wii in terms of sales and overall market share. I had high hopes, but they have continued to dwindle as more and more big titles get released. The games are great, don’t get me wrong…it’s just not providing the huge surge in sales as some might have thought. 55k units is a modest increase, but still small in the grand scheme of things. Fiscally speaking, the Wii U may ultimately be deemed a failure, but Nintendo has boatloads of money and will keep delivering innovative products to their user base until they have another hit on their hands! It’s going to be difficult, as the entire industry is shifting, along with the high availability of tablets and smart phones sucking up potential customers. Oh also, Steambox is coming. Regardless, I’m still going to be enjoying the hell out of my system and can’t wait for the new games in the fall and early 2014! TL;DR: I friggin’ love Nintendo, but I don’t see the Wii U being a success in terms of revenue.
