Wii U virtual console
Nintendo will offer the Wii U Virtual Console for players to download games from older Nintendo systems through Wii U backwards compatibility. The supported consoles include GameCube, Nintendo 64, and others. The Wii U Virtual Console feature will be part of the Wii U eShop channel, where users will also be able to buy additional game content (DLC), and more. The Wii U will support the old Wii Virtual Console controller with all games. However, since there is no GameCube port, those games will have re-mapped controls to the Wii U tablet controller. It is rumored that small puzzle mini-games will be available through a Wii U apps channel as well.

Wii U Virtual Console supported systems

  • GameCube
  • Nintendo 64
  • NES
  • SNES
  • Various third party systems like the Sega Master System

Many of the games available on the current Virtual Console for the Wii are expected to come to the Wii U. These games number in the hundreds, including the vast majority of the older Nintendo franchises. The virtual console will be part of the Wii U channels and will be access through the main system menu.

Wii U Virtual Console pricing

Games on the Wii U Virtual Console will be priced from 300 to 1500 Wii Points, which translates to $3 to $15. Games from older systems such as the NES will priced towards the lower end, while GameCube games will be priced at $10 and above. Third party publishers will set their own prices.

Virtual Console games

Nintendo will be bringing most of their lineup to gamers, with titles such as Super Mario, Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Zelda: Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart 64, and many, many more. The full list of the lineup is yet to be unveiled by Nintendo. We’ll have a full list of games once the service goes live.

Wii U Game transfers

Nintendo is expected to allow gamers to transfer their Virtual Games from their Wii to the new Wii U console. However, it is uncertain how this would work, since the Wii U will be using a new user account and player profile system. One rumor suggested that Nintendo was considering handing players gift cards with Wii Points to re-download the games to the new system. Whether this is true, remains to be seen.

Games that are download via the Wii U Virtual console will be saved to the on-board flash storage, which is rumored to be 8 GB. However, Nintendo will allow the option of storing downloaded games on SD cards ranging from 2 to 16 GB, and on USB hard drives and flash drives.

Cool As Long as Thay have OoT And MM

    • Mike

Why is that even a question, is there even a possibility that it wouldn’t?

    • lee

      OoT, MM, WW for me.

  • Ian

Awesome i’d love to see this stuff on a virtual console! But I don’t wanna have to start all over on my gamecube games. But getting a great gamecube game for TEN DOLLARS is awesome! To be honest I thought the virtual console on wii was not that good. Sure it had a lot of good stuff but there was some stuff missing like maybe Earthbound now that would of been cool! I can’t wait to see what’s on there! Wii U gonna be the best console EVER!

  • Jose

Cool!! I can download Super Smash Bros. Melee and get Super Mario Sunshine…. AGAIN!! My little bro broke my original Super Mario Sunshine disc. ūüôĀ

  • Brian

Nintendo has successfully secured my entire wallet. If they wanted me to just hand them my credit cards all they would need to do is make an HD remake of OOT, MM, and WW. Other games of note for the gamecube that they should upscale are Luigi’s Mansion, Custom Robo, and Gotcha Force. Guaranteed buys for me at least.

    • lee

same! OoT, MM, WW, and such all would be great!

  • Peter

Heyy, what about a Dreamcast and Sega Saturn support?? I’d love that.

    • Crapcake

      Don’t forget the genesis

  • Gary Moscheles

really too bad that the GCN downloads can’t load from GCN memory cards, but this is still amazing nonetheless. this was something i felt the wii should have had.

    • lee

they worked on that but from what I read they were just too big to push.

  • Denard johnson

The wii price is pretty smart and dum at the same time for many reasons. For exampl, the nintando E3 price for wii u is smart because of the astraction of the low price. Bringing many fans and hardcore gamers to the new exprences. But, with the price being so low makes you wonder. Will nintendo make enoungh to fund the Nintendo All-Acces E3 for wii u, Miiverus, Nindendo of America wedsites. With so much exprence for players, fans, and gamers to try for the frist time Nintendo might make tall amounts of money off the wii u. So that will give them lots of money to find all and more depending on the amount of seals made, but if not Nintendo will do just not. I have faith Abd believe Nintendo will seals out on the wii u. Can’t want for the seals to begin

  • Denard johnson

ughhhh so sorry I meant sale not seal

  • nintendon’t

I think they will make more money off of their virtual console than the games that are said to be released on the Wii U’s release date… that is, if their isn’t a new Zelda or Mario game ( you know, the more popular nintendo games).

  • tg16

is turbo grafax 16 on here.

  • dimoskid

I like that their is Gamecube games on the virtual console, but wouldn’t it be nice if Nintendo let us have the option of having a HD remake of the Gamecube games for only a few more dollars (like 10 dollars for original game and 15 dollars for the HD remake). I’m happy either way because I can finally get Wind Waker and all of the other games I wanted for the Gamecube but never got.

  • Jarred

I really think they should allow some sort of a gift card system for people that bought Virtual Console games on the Wii in case that the Wii U couldn’t play games downloaded from the Wii. I just hate to have to spend money again on my OOT, MM, and my Mario games. Maybe even try to develop a system that halfway reads the game so you can redownload it, for example; you insert your SD card from your Wii that has Majora’s Mask on it, then the Wii U recognizes that you’ve previously bought the game and then allows you to redownload it free of charge, I don’t know just food for thought.

  • Richard

I hope the games in virtual console and even some wiiware games are presented in their original aspect ratio (4:3) instead of been streeched as the wii actually does it. Some games in N64 and Gamecube are in 16:9, also some wiiware games are in that aspect ratio as well, so those with 4:3 aspect ratios are presented as is.

  • WiiU Virtual Consoles

Wii u should add these consoles
    Atari 2600
    Atari 7800
    Nintendo 64

    • Auth

I’m really worired for the 3DS version I’m having second thougts on grabbing it for Christmas I wish more stages were included on both versions but still the 360/PS3 are looking great so far SEGA/Sonic Team has worked very hard I’m just unsure about the 3DS version they’ve improved it a bit but I’m worired it won’t be as good as expected to be at first there’s still time for DIMPS to work on it more right? I guess Kingdom Valley may be on the 3DS that would be fine but slightly disappointing I would of preffered on the other versions. Tropical Resort meh I’m not sure it’s a real shame that they couldn’t include other levels on most past handheld games but some levels seem interesting for the 3DS

  • Jordan

    Sonic Adventure DX
    Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
    Sonic Heroes
    Sonic Riders
    Sonic Gems Collection
    Shadow the Hedgehog

Can Nintendo add those to the Wii U Gamecube virtual console?

    • SonicBRSTMCreator100

You mean SEGA can add those to the Wii U Virtual Console?

      • Jordan

If Sega is OK with it.

        • Seth Darkcloud

          nintendo owns sega now
so they can do what they want with the sega games
sega is just another department of nintendo just as is the virtual console department

          • THE Baron of REALITY

I am sorry to say that Nintendo does definitely NOT own Sega. I mean seriously THINK ABOUT it! If Sega was owned by Nintendo than WHY have they recently made games for ps3 and xbox. Sega owns those games 100% and decides if they want the game in their stores. Please do some research before embarrassing yourself in the comments again.

          • stephini

while it is true that sega(subsid of sega sammy holdings) is not owned by nin. the sentiment that them being nin owned would stop ms and sony support is flawed. rare(a ms subsid) still devs for big n.

    • Brandon

you read my mind, it’s most likely they will, but gems collection… not really, its not that i hate it, its like, alot of games in 1.16 games in museum, and more in the games. if all these games made it in virtual console, i would be really happy

      • Brandon

but the other sonic games, theyre most likely

        • Jordan

Well instead of Sonic Gems Collection, how about Sonic CD, Sonic R, and Sonic the Fighters?

  • Jordan

I almost forgot, Mother/EarthBound Zero on NES and Mother 2/EarthBound on SNES virtual console? Just asking.

  • Jordan

And don’t forget Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Adventure Squad (Stormy, Blazing, and Light). I’ve been waiting for years for those games to come to the Wii Ware and so far, there is no US release date. I hope that those games will make it to the Wii U.

  • TheImaj

PLEASE bring PilotWings64 to Virtual Console!

  • noelio67

Hope they upload these games that they never put
On the Wii,Jurassic Park for SNES,Pang…Outrun…Turbo
Outrun….Ikari Warriors..Toki….all arcade, and Flashback for the

  • Brettoblaster

Will we be able to play full virtual console games on the gamepad? Like if someone wanted to watch tv, would I be able to take the gamepad in the other room and play Donkey Kong Country?

    • victor

i trully hope so. it would be very nice and confortable to play only on the tab, while watching something else hehe

    • Gabe Hoffman

Well I have seen articles that claim VC games won’t be playable on gamepad but I am not really taking such news seriously because the articles did not specifically mention what kind on VC games would not be playable on the Gamepad they just said VC. I think that would only apply to Wii VC games since those games were not originally designed to work with the Gamepad. But I am guessing Nintendo will make all the VC games from Wii available on eShop which means they will probably update them with Gamepad support.

      • Seth Darkcloud

mabe thay wont be on virtual console for a while…
but if they do, they will probablr still requre the original controllers to
or if classic controler, be used with the classic controler for wii u

    • aarond44

nintendo recently told kotaku that they are planning to have the vc games be able to be played using the gamepad alone, so yeah that should happen and may be part of the reason its taken a while for them to release vc for wii u. also most if not all (i’m not 100% sure if all if them can) of vc games downloaded on the wii can be tranfered during the wii data transfer, but have to be played with wii controls, if you have any already you want to play while your waiting.

  • Chris

I want to download Eternal Darkness ūüėÄ

  • wii_gamer

They should have the following games that never came out on the wii VC:
NES: Double Dragon, Battletoads, Duck Tales
SNES: TMNT Turtles in time, Killer Instinct, XMen Mutant Apocalipse, Magical Quest w/Mickey Mouse, UN Squadron, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
N64: Goldeneye, Shadows of the empire, Killer Instinct Gold
These are 12 games I must have to complete my nostalgia collection LOL

  • Seth Darkcloud

    i want paper mario 1 and 2
i dont really like super paper mario that much
still a great game, just not my style
then, with sticker star, i will be paper mario king
    (excluding super paper Mario)

  • Andrew

I want to see Mother 1 and 2(Earthbound) for wii u and Mother 3 for the 3DS Virtual Console

  • pokemon

I’d like to have pokemon colosseum and XD available on it.

I really want to see Super Mario Strikers, Metroi Prime, The Wind Waker, Super Smash Bros Melee, The Twilight Princess, Super Mario Sunshine, and especially Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

  • Garrett

I only want to see Tales of Symphonia on VC, i can live without every other game as good as they may be

  • Twilight Princess on virtual console

I’m curious to see what Nintendo does with Twilight Princess. If they classify it as a Wii game then I guess that means it won’t be available for download.

  • Charlie

The only reason I was going to buy a Wii was for the virtual console – I still have my old 8-bit Nintendo and cartridges, and they take up a lot of space. It would be nice to put them in storage & have one console with all my 8-bit games on it and be done with it.

Here’s what I want to see with the Wii U: Virtual console so I can download all my 8-bit NES games and play them at home, AND have it work so they will play on the Wii U controller when out on the go (making it a portable NES). If Nintendo does that, I’ll be first in line to get one.The only reason I was going to buy a Wii was for the virtual console – I still have my old 8-bit Nintendo and cartridges, and they take up a lot of space. It wil never happen.¬† Nintendo only ever released barely over 200 games from all of their older systems combined.¬† It could be less, I can’t remember.¬† They will never meet your needs when it comes to supplying their oldest and longest running fans with the games they love.¬† Week after week you will wait for the new games to come out, only to be disappointed with 2 third party indie games that you¬† would never play.¬† Keep the old system, the game control is way better and some of the roms¬†don’t have perfect transfers of the games.¬† That’s right I said roms,¬†if you can’t find a good copy of a game online, then you won’t fiind it on the virtual console.¬† Also, if a downloadable rom has certain bugs in it, they will also be found on the virtual console game.¬† Download Super DodgeBall, you will see what I mean.¬† If you really want to have a good gaming system, get nesticle or nestopia, download all of your games off of rom-world or cool roms, purchase an xbox controller with the chord in it, and play to your hearts desire on your computer.¬† You also have many other added features to your emulator that you won’t have with the Wii.¬† Plus all of the games will be free.¬† Hope I gave you guys some good pointers and advice.¬† The idea of taking the controller around and playing your games does sound awesome, which means it won’t be happening.¬† Take it easy.

    • pcjoeyd

sounds like a modded Wii would be ideal for you.   I play ALL of my old console games on my modded Wii.   I have every game ever released for atari 2600, nes, snes, sega genesis, & turbo 16..   I also have N64, neo geo, atari 7800, colecovision,..the neo geo emulator is awesome!!
Anyways, just some good advice for ya.

      • Jocke Br√•dalen

but can you play them with your gamepad?

        • pcjoeyd

I play them with my Nintendo Wii classic controller…it’s a gamepad that was released by Nintendo to use with the virtual console games (also works with certain Wii games as well)….it’s a must have if you own a Wii and like to play snes, genesis games, etc etc

  • Jimmy Nintendo

As long as they have Zombies ate my neighbors I’ll be happy! Best game ever:)

    • buttreemer17

They won’t,¬†Nintendo barely released any games for the virtual console that were original games from older systems.¬† The majority of the games, over 80%, were new third party indie games.¬† Don’t count on Nintendo releasing any of your favorite games from older systems on the Wii U.¬† They didn’t do it in the several years that the Wii was out, and they won’t do it for the Wii U either.

      • Jeff Hopp

Zombies ate my neighbors was¬†released¬†on the Wii’s virtual console so there is still a chance that it would show up on the Wii U’s shop and if not then you could just play it in the Wii mode that the Wii U has.

  • Skip

Great news. Amazing. Awesome. Now, I’ve owned this system for two days now and I still don’t see any sign of the this virtual console in the eShop or anything. When does it get released?

  • ButcherChop

I really wish they’d remake and release some of those games in HD. Metroid in HD would be awesome.¬†

  • XxTwinRova

They need to add this like now. I’m mad this isn’t available yet

  • MadderCommotion

I’ve got a Wii U and I don’t see the Virtual Console anywhere!

  • Ben Vangenechten

You know, Nintendo could also use your club Nintendo account to see what vc games you own and when they publish them on the Eshop thay could place them in your bought section.

  • Brandon peredo

    Pokemon Colosseum

    Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness
    Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door
    Super Mario Strikers
    Sonic Adventure DX Directors Cut
    Sonic Heroes
    Shadow The Hedgehog
I NEED These games for Virtual Console

  • CascadesWA

The main reason I bought the Wii U is because of virtual console….now I still have to use the original Wii virtual console? What is wrong with Nintendo lately? CEO getting senile?
