Wii U

The Wii U has been a bit of a sales struggler, with Nintendo lowering sales projections after disappointing January sales. 66,000 units were sold in February, according to the release of NPD numbers yesterday. Wii U sales were outpaced largely by the competition, with the Xbox 360 moving 302,000 units and the PlayStation 3 moving 263,000.

Despite the low number, Macquarie Capital analyst Ben Schachter described the Wii U’s sales as a good performance, noting sales were up 45% compared to January. With the improved sales figures, Nintendo will also be able to meet its sales targets for the fiscal year.

The Wii U Deluxe model remains the bulk of the sales, with nearly 70% of consumers purchasing that version.

    • Nathaniel Lopez

Pretty much sums up the typical reaction to reading this post.

    • DemonRoach

      Very very bad actually.

      • Nathaniel Lopez

……and the negative responds start rolling in, that didn’t take long.

  • wii u need to release more games… i havent been touching it for a while now..

    • uPadWatcher

They will be releasing more games to the Wii U beginning next week. Lego City: Undercover, Need for Speed: Most Wanted U and Zen Pinball 2 (eShop) will be released starting this Tuesday in North America.

      • GermGerm

        And monster hunter 3, right?

        • Nathaniel Lopez

        • Elem187

How can anyone leave out Monster Hunter !?!@?!? This game is going to be an AWESOME time sink… Think World of Warcraft type of addiction.

          • Nathaniel Lopez

Well, with the stack of news and game releases coming out, I can see how it could’ve been forgotten. I didn’t forget because it’s the game I’m looking forward to the most.

          • Steve

Yup! The game I’ve been waiting for. Once monster hunter 3 comes out, I’m finally going to buy a Wii u. I didn’t buy one right away because of two reasons. First, I wanted to know if there was any serious issues I needed to know, all new tech have this risk. Second, I have no interest in the games that came out at launch. I mean, it’s fun and all. A game that was great enough has not come yet. I have other priorities at the moment. I’ll wait for a game I really want before putting it on my “must buy ASAP” list.

    • Fred

Why haven’t you touched it for awhile now? There are TONS of great games for the Wii U. Currently I own 10 games and the only reason I’m not buying a few more is that I don’t have the time to play them all so I have to restrain myself and only buy the best ones.

      • Pattonfiend67

FOR SURE! i just posted something similar to this to a member who said there are no games… there are plenty of games, just noone is buying them… ac3 is amazing, just put 100 hours into it and got the king washington dlc…

        • thedeciderU

just picked this one up. great game so far (in sequence 5 now), though the frame rate takes away form the gameplay at times unfortunately.

          • dylanbob121

Nintendo isnt about launching games RIGHT away! They take there time to make the best ones possible.

        • sithWiiU

Those are ports. Maybe he already bought those games on PS360. 80 percent of the launch titles were ports.

          • Fred

Mario, Nintendo Land, Scribblenauts, Tank Tank Tank, Little Inferno, Mighty Switch Force, there are lots of Nintendo only games on here

      • sithWiiU

        Those are ports.

    • Pattonfiend67

then go buy some more. there are plenty of launch games that i am sure you have not bought or beaten yet, on top of all the indie games in the eshop… i just put 100 hours into ac3, another 50 into me3, another 40 or so into ninja gaiden 3, another 30 into tekken tag 2, etc… there are plenty of good titles, you are just not buying them!

      • thedeciderU

ninja gaiden 3 looks really good, but i just put sooo much time into far cry 3.

    • Ace J

uh monster hunters comes out in 4 days, just saying

      • Fred

        Same with Lego City

    • val berger

The more I think about it, the more I’m afraid of the E3. Everyone’s claiming that it’s gonna blow our minds. And of course, it’s gotta be. But what if it’s not? Actually it seems like that’s the only chance, nintendo really has left. We know that there’ll be at least 2 big brands from Nintendo, but I think, at the curent state, it really needs something stronger. There’s gotta be some huge new franchise, something that really surprises the press, apart from expected Nintendo-brands. If they could drop such a bomb and additionally unveil more of X and then unveil a new Mario and Mario Kart (which I’m kinda sure will be released soon as MK-games are always shipping in the early stage of a Nintendo console) then this could somehow turn the WiiUs fate. I wasn’t that thrilled to see an E3 lineup in ages …

  • mappy4ever

I remember all this happening with 3DS, and look where it is now!

I don’t blame the consumers they want games obviously! And I am sure with all the great titles launching later this year the sales will catch on! 🙂

    • WiiUltra

I am not worried about Wii U sales at all. They might be selling less than last gen right now but the sales are obviously going to pick up later. Its just a matter of “when” not “if”.

      • Nathaniel Lopez

Yeah, I always thought that the Wii U is selling pretty okay. Sure, it’s not what Nintendo had expected when they first launched the console but, it’s not an abysmal start; At least there’s traction and it’s been picking up and will continue to do so throughout this year. Well, that’s my opinion.

    • michael546k

That’s because the 3DS got a humongous price drop. Also, when Pokemon X/Y comes out, 3DSs will be flying off store shelves like all Nintendo handhelds with main series Pokemon games.

      • Patrick Francis

If they would make a Decent Pokemon game for the Wii U it would start selling like crazy.
Better yet, make it a Pokemon MMO like Dragon Quest X but keep the style of the Handheld pokemons.

  • Varnuunas

I would love to own 1. Im drooling on Wii U. Nintendo has the fun factor. Simple but challenging games on Wii and Wii U are much more fun than shooting and exploding games on other consoles. Many exciting games were created by Nintendo and only for Nintendo. If we could see a new healthy dose of 1st party Nintendo exclusive sequels, there is no need of main stream garbage. Wee need more from capcom, sega, retro studios. If I were a head of Nintendo I would push through some great online MMO like Runescape on Wii U. That would boost console sales a lot.

    • DemonRoach

Basically, anything you wish is going to be on the system will not be there, so why do you want it?

      • Nathaniel Lopez

Can you please explain your reasons for why you think that?

        • Gamefreak361

Trolls don’t explain, they just spew lies 99% of the time with 1% being a bit of a truth.

      • bizzy gie

You suck at trolling. I really mean that. I’m not just saying because your comments are negative towards Nintendo, but because you genuinely suck at trolling. Period. Try harder.

    • Nathaniel Lopez

Well Dragon Quest X is being released soon in Japan which is an MMO albeit an updated/port version of a Wii game.

  • DemonRoach

On goal of selling 1 million units in a year? LOL

    • Nathaniel Lopez

I think it was half that amount last year, Nintendo adjusted their sales expectation in December-January if I remember correctly.

      • Gamefreak361

He’s just here to troll. Pay no mind.

        • dylanbob121

saw him on miiverse…still the same

          • Nathaniel Lopez

Wow, I gotta’ hand it to him though, he shelled out at least 299$ just to be able to troll on the Miiverse. Jokes on him though, he’s trying to do a negative thing while doing something positive. Kinda’ defeats the purpose if you ask me.

    • DragonSilths

A year? It sold 3.2 million in its first 6 weeks alone. A million in a year? pff what a noob.

  • Link Slayer

  • At least they’re still going to reach their sale’s figure of 4 million. Given that 4 games are just in time to be released this month, they might actually hit 5 million after all.

    • DragonSilths

They sold 3.2 Million in the Wii U’s first 6 weeks. So 1.8 Million since then till the end of the month isnt that hard to do lol.

      • Randall Hellmer

        Nope. No chance.

Yes, they sold very well in the beginning. But they haven’t even sold a quarter of that 1.8 million so far this quarter.

  • nyjavi

Can we please stop with MH, I bought a wiiu to play wiiu exclusives. Not to play 3ds remakes. I already have the 3ds version of the game is an old game, they are in trouble because all the exclusives games are been saved for the fall.

    • The 3DS version hasn’t been released outside of Japan yet, and is going to release with the Wii U version, that’s good because no one outside of Japan could play it anyway. And you forgot Lego City is coming this month and that’s being published by Nintendo.

      • nyjavi

You have a point, but none of these titles move consoles. As Nintendo fans we have to admit that they dit not do a good job the first couple of months.

        • dylanbob121

so pikmin 3,new xenoblade, yarn yodhi, batonetta 2,wonderful 101,lego city, scribblenauts unlimeted, miiverse, toki tori 2,new retro title,LoZ WW HD,new zelda dont sell systems,?get your head in the game(s).there are TONS of new games coming and nintendo will announce more!

          • sithWiiU

They don’t sell consoles. All those games you listed are basically niche games, besides Zelda. Also, there is not tons of games, that’s a balantent lie.

    • DragonSilths

Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2 wont be Fall games…

      • nyjavi

They don’t have a clear release date yet. Even rhe president of Nintendo admitted the lack of games. Look I am not troll, I bought the wiiu on day one for me and my son spending over 800 dollars, but since then we are not even getting 3rd party’s games.

        • DragonSilths

Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 will be before E3. April – May for sure. Bayonetta 2 I say in the summer it comes out.

          • nyjavi

I’m praying that they do. All I want is for Nintendo to do good, but admit that they are not doing a good job right now.

  • MetroidZero

The Phoenix will rise at E3.

    • Nathaniel Lopez

I’ve seen you post this a couple of times, what do you mean by Pheonix? Was that the codename of the Wii U during development?

      • DragonSilths

Wii U’s codename was Project Cafe.

      • dylanbob121

        its a metafor.(sorry for spelling)

      • Wighead

The pheonix is a mythical bird that can rebirth from its ashes, just like the wiiu…

        • Nathaniel Lopez

What I mean is that the Wii U isn’t nor was it ever considered dead, I think; So why is it referred to as such.

  • therealruben1

Just wait for 4 days monster hunter 3 and lego city undercover will be released

  • XelaFury

It’s just a matter of time before the Wii U sells like a piece of cake! We just need good titles like Pikmin 3, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101 between others and Wii U’s sales will raise like a monster!

  • Why do people bother to ask a response from Demonroach? You guys and girls just feed this guy, he will never reply to any question you ask, and laugh his @#% off reading the responses, just ignore him. It seems like he’s a hate-on-nintendo bot. Don’t bother asking him to explain himself, because he won’t.

On topic 66000 in one month in the US doesn’t sound very good especially not compared to ps360 sales. Nontheless it’s doing much better in the US then it does in Europe, (unofficial pricedrops etc. I doubt it even sold 20000 in Europe in february, such a shame we simply haven’t even seen any adds for 3 months straight now, if it keeps going like this WiiU will fail for sure in europe, Nintendo really MUST push up advertising etc on WiiU).

I might get my wiiu end of this month maybe, honestly as a longtime Nintendo fan WiiU still has not been able to impress me in any way. Only a few games which aren’t even out yet have my interest at this time, Monster Hunter 3U, Lego City, Bayonetta and X only for Lego City and Monster Hunter at the moment though, as they will be released this month, the rest I don’t really see like must have titles, Indy titles on the other hand seem far more interesting to me at moment, Trine2, Zen Pinball and the Cave 🙂

  • Gregory Edcius

    Funny stuff DDP886 lvl99 troll

    Before this gets to far

    1. Well at some point is (supposed) brother had one and sold it for a PS4 preorder (i.e. nothing)

    2. Also he his “store” is full of Wii U’s apparantly

    3. The disc tray on his “friend”‘s Wii U stopped working. (even though the Wii U doesnt have a disc tray)

    4. He says he sold it, February 12, 2013 for $200

—oh wait. Here he says he got it for $250 without the gamepad…

    – But there is another one

BONUS: Watch Dogs is not a major title. Notice how he said this after the Wii u version was revealed
    aaaand now it’s a “360 port”:

    5. His A button fell off…

    6. Oh and then his left….button(?) on his D-Pad…fell off….seems legit I guess..

And he sold 47k in nintendo stock but works at target

    • dylanbob121

wow…how can someones A button fall off?dark magic? This guy is a nerd,(not you) for posting something like this on a website…6 TIMES!!???

      • Gregory Edcius

Impossible stuff happening to impossible people.

Well he also goes on in other topics he takes every chance he gets to bash nintendo a real lvl99 troll

        • dylanbob121

          That makes sence

      • sithWiiU

That dude may be a nerd, but Gregory is just sad. He took the time to search out different forums to prove a troll he’s a troll…id rather be the nerd.

  • audi lover

Seriously xboxb a ps3 selling more than an 250 tho a month what a load ov bull no chance whs buying? Hardware fucked again i knw ive had 2 buy 2. Xbox cause ov the ring and a 2nd ps3 cause ov yellow flasher, never had that type ov proh on nintendo,Theres nothing on my xbox or ps3 apart from tomb raider and thats let me dwn whrs th tombs????

  • DragonSilths

Starting next Monday with Lego City, sales will go up. I remember the days of back in the NES, SNES, N64 and even GC days gamers never cared about sales numbers lol. Good times.

    • thedeciderU

haha good call – there wasn’t a place to bitch!

    • John Andalora

I don’t know… I’m not a huge fan of the Lego games, and I’m not sure how many people would buy a Wii U for that game.

      • Wayne Beck

It’s getting rave reviews.. except from Edge, but, I mean, it’s edge..

  • DragonSilths

Funny how people are forgetting this is only the United States numbers, Canada, Mexico, UK, Europe, Japan numbers apparently dont count?

    • sithWiiU

Mexico? Mexico is a 3rd world countyr, so no, no one cares about anything from there.

      • SilverDrake20

Someone who doesn’t even spell country right doesn’t deserve to have an opinion. An extremely arrogant opinion at that.

    • GuardiansFan

You bring up a good point and looking online you can see that 2.6 million wii u have sold so far. The xbox 360 had sold 2.4 million units after the same amount of time and the PS3 2 millions…so it actually beats both systems after the same amount of time. The Wii U is going to be fine

  • no one knows the damn thing exists!!! Any time I go to talk to someone about it, they don’t have a clue what I’m talking about!

  • InterTreble

Miyamoto is not worried, and neither do I. But Wii U must be adviced and better supported by marketing. It’s a great console, indeed. But without games and ads, hater’s voice will always be louder… I’m totally sure things will change perhaps already at the end of this mounth, but most likely after next E3 and above all after the release of those masterpieces called Nintendo IPs we all really expect!

    • sithWiiU

Omg, reading your comment was hard. What grade are you in? I can not believe you have two upvotes.

      • InterTreble

Sorry I’m not mothertongue. Is it a problem for you? Enjoy your life! 🙂

  • Sack the 8 gig version for goodness sake, and price cut the 32 gig version down a bit to $299.99 just in time for Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD. I’m sure that would get people onto the system. I already have my 32 gig version and wouldn’t mind a price cut if we got a little reward for being an early adopter. That way you could still spend around $350 but also pick up either an extra game or wiimote/procontroller.

  • Billy_Perry

Why is this a news story? The Wii U sold badly in January, there haven’t been any games released since then worth playing, did people really expect the numbers to suddenly increase?

If anything, the fact the console’s sale numbers are going in the right direction (Irrelevant of by how much), without any extra promotion or games, is a very good thing. Stop reporting these non-news stories.

  • i love nintendo i love wiiu but im also getting ps4 but used im waiting to get it used cuz i aint paying no 500 dollars but itll be good more poweerful itll feed my graphics needs while wiiu feeds my super fun games needs

  • Scott Duperree

I suggest rolling out limited edition Console bundles in these early days with all of the major games. I’m sure there are people who will be enticed to buy the Wii U because of the Monster Hunter 3 bundle. Why not make a limited edition Lego City: Undercover Bundle, and a limited edition Pikmin 3 bundle to entice those niche players until major software shows up in the holiday season. I bet it would boost sales.

  • Michael Jurado

people understand the economy in america is still pretty crappy hence why some people don’t even have jobs nor the wii u personally i can see ps4 and 720 sales being way way way worse than the wii u’s especially if 360 and ps3 sales are picking up due to their price give it time you’ll see what i’m talking about. I at least want a wii u unlike ps4 or 720 >.>

    • Fred

The problem with that argument is the Xbox 360 is still selling like crazy. If the economy was the reason the Wii U isn’t selling well then the 360 wouldn’t be selling well either.
I think it’s just that people don’t get a good first impression. I know I didn’t. I had to read a lot about it before I even considered getting one. I talked several people into getting one, but at first they didn’t even want to consider it. After people come to my place and play it, their opinion changes. People need to get to know it. If that happens I think it’ll sell really well, but if they don’t, then I don’t know if it will or not.

  • Johny

not worried abondout the sales… it IS true that the wii u’s current library isnt enough for alot of people.. and its understandable,… and with ALL the AMAZING games coming VERY soon, or in near future, this issue will be fixed easily 🙂
now all nintendo has to do at that point is ADVERTISE WII U so people : 1. Know it exists, 2. its a new gen console from nintendo, 3. its NOT A WII ACCESSORY

  • j0niex

Sales are bad because of the economical crisis, thats it. Same will happen to any new hardware that’s going to be released.

  • Quicksilver88

Just give us more games…..i am loving tomb raider on Ps3….maybe the best TR game ever and just a super game overall….I really wish this had made it to Wii-U. With all the collecting and map use and weapons upgrading the gamepad would be awesome. How about a new Advance wars game that uses gamepad for unit management, I would like to see nintendo, and capcom, and level 5 take some of the concepts that work well on 3ds and bring then to HD wii-u versions…hopefully it will happen

  • ICHI

I have read another article on this, this morning and it claimed the WiiU out performed the XBOX and PS3 in Europe and Japan overall since launch and I can’t find it now!!! Regardless of whether it’s true or not the sales numbers are US only and as always in Japan XBOX is still doing dismal, but they’re still selling them and were not getting monthly stories about how it failed so massively in Asia. If Nintendo succeeds in as far as they’re still making money from all territories then these stories of bad sales in the US are nothing to worry about ever, let alone after 3 months of sales. I have seen quite a few stories predicting doom and gloom for nintendo and how this is their last console, but everyone should remember the Virtual Boy, released at a time when a lot of money was going into the N64 (which didn’t set the world on fire with sales either even if it was awesome!) and they still posted a profit.

I think that advertising has petered out as ninty probably want to minimise the loss they might have to post thanks to buying up ip’s and startup production and distribution costs for the wii u like last year, keeping stocks stable enough to ride through the next year where all their money has to do is produce and advertise their new games which at the same time will advertise their new system. Most people here want the system to succeed but nintendo still have to run it like a business, with last year being a big blip in their stellar bank book it makes sense to wait till they have a game to advertise again especially one like Pikmin which could bring back a ton of fans as well as inspire a new load.

I don’t worry for nintendo, they’re good at business and weathering the storms which come their way.

  • ahaha! this is impossible, this can’t be true? according to the wiitards all the analysts are wrong about the bad wii u sales. lol! Nintendo fangirls here are the facts read them and cry. RIP wii u

  • No wii U on most 3rd. world countries 🙁 …

  • oontz

Meh, I bought my Wiiu for the sole purpose of playing my favorite Nintendo IPs. I know that when the new mario kart, zelda, mario 3d, etc drops… they’ll see a pick up of system sales. They haven’t really had that one system seller “gotta have title” and until then people will wait it out. I don’t mind waiting though… I have almost finished Tomb Raider, which is mind-blowing good! I am looking forward to Bioshock Infinite next week… Then GTA5 and the Last of us!! I like to not put all my videogame eggs in one basket. That way I can enjoy all the best games!!

  • Marius Valasinas

Yet Nintendo sell much more Wii Us than other next gen systems 😀

  • Trace

This same thing happened with the 3Ds! Now its doing pretty good! But personally, I blame the lack of games that it has/lack of A super smash bros game XD

  • odare

all these numbers are stricken by this years big test, whether or not you able to see past the fishy hearsay and hallucenations and get the real story, some of this games not coming to wii u reads are sending me a signal that tells me the HESICKY has struck

  • Randall Hellmer

“With the improved sales figures, Nintendo will also be able to meet its sales targets for the fiscal year.”

    No. Just no.

Nintendo made those predictions when they were 940,000 short of their target, and with almost that many systems unsold by retailers. During January and February, they didn’t even sell HALF that many. There’s just no way they’re going to reach their 4 million target by the end of this month.

Also, I notice your source isn’t working. Might want to fix that.
