The Wii U and 3DS sold well for Nintendo this week in Japan, according to the latest Media Create Sales report. Over 130,000 3DS XL systems were sold, up 41 percent from last week. Meanwhile, almost 75,000 Wii U consoles were sold, a near 53 percent increase in sales compared to last week.

On the software side, 3DS title Puzzle & Dragons Z led the charts with over 543,000 games sold. Pokemon X and Y took the second spot with nearly 160,000 units. The long tail sales of Super Mario 3D World continue to rise, moving nearly 58,000 units and taking the third spot in the software charts this week. I figured this game would keep going up. It’s going to be a game that lasts the entire gen, like Smash bros lol.

  • Kaleb

    74 903? Thats almost 100k, in a week

    • Speedy Petendo

“Ummm…that’s not nearly [100k]…not even close…you’re about 24,000 units off.”

      Just kidding.

I actually posted the Japan Wii U numbers here on Wii U daily about 6 hours before this article. But here is the hilarious part… Some guy named Tom wrote that above quote to me because I said that week over week, sales nearly doubled. I guess Tom doesn’t understand the word “nearly.” Anyway I’m glad there is now an article about my original find.

      • Eddie Garland

        wow you’re so great.

      • readypembroke

Its actually about 1.5 times the week before,

      • Rinslowe

Certainly, it is closer to 100K than the sum of it’s difference…

    • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

      In a single country

  • HMM! Interesting! The U is finally seeing a slight turn around aye? : )

  • Once again the top 3 spots in hardware and software sales in Japan go to NINTENDO!!

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

74,903, great news ! Will this last ? Let’s hope

  • Sdudyoy

74 thousand? and we where amazed by last weeks 48 thousand!

  • JAYCEE989

Great news! I don’t see them getting the 9 mill sold goal but maybe 6.5 mill. 6.5 mill for a year old console is great news!

  • LevenThumps

Keep the numbers rising, Nintendo. All you have to do is keep the games coming, and the systems will be sold.

  • Ducked

Impressive sales numbers! Wii U might reach 5 million world wide by January if this continues in Japan, and other regions such as North America and Europe.

  • Agent721

The Wii U sales momentum continues. This is 3 weeks in a row of rising sales in the land of the rising Sun. Very good trend!

  • jjbredesen

Holy shit this is just what i predicted! The Wii U is about to pull a 3DS.

    • Squid

I feel like releasing Wii Fit U would raise those sales but it also serves as a New Years resolution helper.

  • Nintedward

Makes sense that such a fantastically entertaining piece of hardware with tons of games (all types included) should sell.

    Wiiu FTW.

  • babulibaba

wtf, puzzles and dragons is an iphone game, i didnt know it was an actual big thing, and cod ghosts by square?!?!

    • readypembroke

Square Enix takes COD games and makes them suitable for the Japanese audiences.

  • cThreep

Still not sure if the Wii U will sell 9 million units by the end of March, but I don’t see something like 7 million being too unrealistic. Wii U is doing just fine.

    • Gary Ryckewaert

WiiU will be lucky to get to 5.5 million by march unfortunately. I love my Wii U, but Nintendo blew the year lead they had to stockpile a huge cushion against the competition. They always say they learned but inevitably those who buy at launch end up with a huge drought of games for months on end. Nintendo is their own worst enemy.

  • InterTreble

Again… great numbers for Wii U! They have been being so since Super Mario 3D World was released. I guessed it could be a turning point for Wii U. I cannot say I was right, but now people who don’t trust on Wii U (or make doom always and everywhere) have more than one reason to make up their mind.

    • Daniel Carvalho

Mario titles have always been a long term system sellers, not a launching week/month system seller. It was pretty stupid to predict the doom of the Wii u on sales for the first and second weeks after the 3D World didn’t manage to raise Wii U sales immediately, but those biased websites simply love to ignore facts and decide Nintendo is irrelevant. Well, sales say otherwhise now.

  • Will (ishigum)

    Nintendo is doomed huh trolls?

  • Dallan

Why is it always japans sales?? is their a reason why Nintendo does not publish their sales in america?

    • D.M.T

It’s not Nintendo who publishes Japan sales, it’s the gaming media who does. Japan is important because it’s the home of Nintendo and Sony.

    • Zuxs13

NPD no longer does sales numbers for the US so there are no accurate sources of sales numbers in the US any more. Japan and Europe still publish the sales data though, but Japan does this all the time so that is why we see these numbers every week.
Nintendo just gave its sales number outlast week for the use, they are the ones that said the Wii U rose over 300% since Oct. They usually dont give out that data unless its impressive, or they have an investor meeting (which tend to happen once a quarter) .

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

Weird! I don’t see ps4 in hardware sales, i thought sony was huge in japan. Well they got some ps3 sold thats preatty good!

    • InsaneZucchini

PS4 doesn’t release in Japan until February.

      • MujuraNoKamen

One day after DK? I hope Wii U keeps it’s momentum going before PS4 releases in Japan or it’ll have a serious problem. 2014 is looking like a great year for Wii U but I’m worried about the early months, we’ve got nothing in January and DK will arrive late February and MK8 might not be out till June. We’ve got B2, X and much more to look forward to but presumably not until Q2 and later which is where Wii U failed in 2013 – we got some great stuff but it was march when we finally got LCU & MH3, then we had to wait till July for Pikmin, then things began to pick up. Plus several games got delayed like DK and WD.
If we’re waiting 3 months for a new game then a few months for another all the while the competitors are releasing Infamous and Titanfall then well… I’m worried.

  • Lil J Moore

    Nintendo: always on top

  • The Clockwork Being

Trolls: Ah the Wii U sells have went up you say. For weeks now! Well who cares its still failing.

Sad that some people have that logic. Mostly on IGN.

    • Rinslowe

IGN is a solid source for gaming news, reviews and all the rest of it. I stand by that 100%. They do fall off the wagon on occasion, but mostly it’s decent coverage.
But that comment section…. I’ve said it before and it has to be said again, “that” comment section is overrun with trolls, haters and malcontents. Avoid at all costs or engage at your own peril…

      • NintenScience

        lol, a so-called “solid source”

        • Rinslowe

Honestly I don’t think you’re in that position to be judging. Seeing as though you have set up your own site. Do you want to be judged just as equally?
IGN has good resources. Media that can be accessed anywhere in the world and sure, sometimes they are lacking. But most times they are at least informative.
Say what you will but I think a little professionalism goes a long way, lest you want to have a site of one…

          • NkoSekirei

i dont trust gamestop more then ign but both of those gamesites can be quite bias to nintendo at times

          • Rinslowe

And yet IGN has shown on numerous occasions, a complete lack of bias…
It has it’s sore points of course. But it’s not all bad news all the time. That title goes to Eurogamer IMO…

          • Gabcormier

There was a time (when audrey left) when IGN wasn’t ever bothering to cover Nintendo news and we got late news and almost nothing to see, although some news were out. Thats when I went to Wiiudaily and Nintendolife

      • The Clockwork Being

Sometimes IGN can be a good source but sometimes they are seriously bias and lacking.

      • greengecko007

I don’t get all the IGN bashing on this site… I keep reading comments about how IGN doesn’t care about Nintendo or the Wii U, yet IGN usually has articles similar to WiiUDaily up faster, sometimes several days before.

Some people just aren’t happy if the “journalists” aren’t bending over backwards telling you what you want to hear.

        • Rinslowe

Personally I think Jose Otero, Keza MacDonald and Peer represent Nintendo quite well. And as you say, they are pretty fast to the punch.

          • Zuxs13

I don’t like Keza at all, Jose does a good job though. I mist the days of Matt Casamassina though.

        • Relick

I think the problem most nintendo fans have with sites like IGN is the fact than whenever there is an article on ‘next gen consoles’ or a new multiplatform game the Wii U is never mentioned. Like it isn’t next gen or doesn’t get the games.

I bet even most of Wii U owners don’t even know CoD Ghosts is on it.

    • Squid

The comment section is hilarious, I see 13 year olds claiming to be a man because the play Xbox.

  • MujuraNoKamen

HAHA NICE! Keep up the good work Nintendo.
How are the figures elsewhere in the world though, not that I want to rain on this parade but Japan is only one piece of the market and it is important to note that PS4 hasn’t launched in Japan yet and if Wii U doesn’t well and truly pick up by then we’ll be back to square one. Either way I hope Nintendo keeps up the momentum of great games, I don’t want Wii U to hit a speed bump in the new year like it did all those months ago.

  • Rinslowe

    16 – 21 – 28 – 48 – 74K. If thine eyes doth not deceivith me. Seems like a pretty good trend here eh!

  • The Clockwork Being

Funny how lightning Returns only outsold Mario for 2 weeks and only Mario managed to stay on the top up until now.

    • greengecko007

      Because Final Fantasy fanboys…

But really, I know everyone has there different gaming preferences, but that game doesn’t even look remotely fun. That series has gone very far down hill.

      • ETeach

Yeah, I kind of miss the classics. Especially 1, where you could choose your own starting party and name them. Those old games were really special in that way.

        • greengecko007

I’ve got my fingers crossed for virtual console releases.

  • tom

    This is great news!

  • Suraj Alexander

The drop in ps3 sales is because they are gonna wait till ps4 launches there

    • But what happens after the PS4 is out for a month or two and all the Final Fantasy hype dies down?

  • LoBo_UK

SM3DW is by far the best game I have played in years , utterly brilliant , Nintendo at its finest , and to think I nearly bought a ps4 , so glad i didn’t now

  • Zuxs13

This is a much more encouraging sign than last week, i think the bundles and the price drop are really helping a lot in Japan. What is interesting is how the one year sales match up for the WiiU, PS3, and PSV: 1,273,555 units, 1,219,474 units, and 1,074,621 units for the PS3, Wii U, and PS Vita respectively. I think this speaks to the fact that the Japanese audience felt the launch prices were too high and that the price drop was a big help in accelerating the sales.

  • Relick

Just last week Hatsune Miku was at the top and now it has dropped off the charts.

What is up with Japan? xD

  • kutral

GO GO Mario and Wii U!

[PS3] Call of Duty: Ghosts Dubbed Version (Square Enix, 12/12/13) – 37,519 (New)
What did i miss? Square Enix?
