Wii U sales hit 400kNintendo has announced that the recently launched Wii U console has sold 400,000 units during its first week on the market in North America. In comparison, the original Wii sold 600,000 units during the first 8 days on the market. Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime said that the Wii U is “essentially sold out” in North America and that they’re looking to replenish stock as soon as possible.

On top of the Wii U sales, Nintendo also sold an impressive 300,000 Wii consoles. 3DS units saw sales of 250,000, while the original DS sold 275,000 units. Overall, during the last week of Holiday shopping, Black Friday included, Nintendo sold over 1.2 million hardware units.

Nintendo was recently rumored to be working on a redesigned Wii Mini console, and it would certainly be a good idea — the Wii is still selling very strong, even in North America.

As for the Wii U, Nintendo said they learned their lesson’s with the original Wii back in 2006, where they didn’t have enough stock for years. Now with the Wii U, they’ll have more production capability to meet consumer demand.

This is a good sign that the Wii U might be another big seller for Nintendo.

          • Madmagican

your pic brings back so many nightmares…

          • BLACK OPS 2?

telln nahbor my arm broek so i cant type so mmuch now

    • D2K

Considering the lackluster job Nintendo did promoting the Wii U to the casual consumer, the price, and the current economic conditions 400,000 in the first week is VERY good. Looks like the Wii U is well on it’s way.

      • Nko Sekirei

wii u is definitely gonna outsell the next gen consoles from sony and microsoft cause wii u will have an edge against them with alot more support and games wise go nintendo continue to blow our minds aways with ur great games and system

        • Bilbo Baggins

Now Microsoft and Sony know they can copy them for their consoles. Bastards.

          • D2K

Microsoft is already doing it with SmartGlass. I don’t know what Sony is planning. I know the PS4 will not be a great leap because the CEO has said it won’t and they cannot afford for it to be even if they wanted to.

If they were smart they would just find a way to make a system more powerful than the PS3, but not so much more powerful that it would sell at a loss. Then find a way to pack in the Vita. That way the could sell the public as having one up on the Wii U.

“Our controller can do everything the Wii U Gamepad does, and more.”

Technically that would be true. And if you could stream games back and forth from the Vita to the PS4, that would be a good idea. Start playing a game on the PS4, then if you have to leave somewhere, stream it to the Vita and continue playing it where ever you go.

I don’t expect Sony to do this but it’s what I would do.

    • Nko Sekirei

wait till christmas the sells will go up cause people didnt get one are gonna get theirs on christmas day

    • Bicentennial_Pidgeon

It’s a home console. Of course it’ll be a big seller for Nintendo. They all are πŸ˜€

    • Jack

Nope, I see Gamecube success for Wii U. “Essentially sold out?” That is like a singer having a #4 hit and claiming to “essentially have a #1 hit!” Come on Nintendo! Try and be honest with your business instead of lying 100% of the time.

  • Hydrowave99

I was quite the naughty one and found out I am getting a Wii U Deluxe Edition for Christmas. Will be an awesome Christmas for sure.

    • Nintedward

I remember breaking into my mums room in the year 2000 and discovering a SEGA dreamcast hidden away under her bed LOL!!!!

Epic times! My two best Xmas’s ever = Gamecube , Dreamcast .

      • LordFenixNC

Nintedward… Dreamcast was awesome… and well still is… the console maybe dead-ish… but the games are still living on…. most of them i think are now on PSN and XBLA… I would love to see them appear on Wii-U…

great game i would like to see hit consoles or even PC Propeller arena!!!!

        • Nintedward

        • Jack

Don’t worry, the Dreamcast will have company with the Wii U and Gamecube!

      • MEJM

The best christmas I have had was when I got Ocarina of Time! I had never played such a game, it was a revelation. I was twelve at the time. πŸ™‚

    • AKA-Link77

lol i think i would have smelled the Wii U too.

      • Lazyboy88

It’s not even funny to find out what you get for Xmas, before it is 24/25 i remember finding one of my presents when i was kid and my min let me have it, but then i kinda ruined her surprice, so i felt really bad about it..

  • Fireheart

It’s impressive that Nintendo only sold 100,000 units less on the Wii. This proves that people still buy and love the Wii console. It’s going to be a sad and happy day all in one when the Wii U takes over completely as Nintendo’s main console. Let’s just all keep the Wii in our thought of happy gaming and remember it still can be played on the Wii U. Yay and to the Nintendo haters Nintendo isn’t going anywhere soon so deal with it.

    • D2K

A lot of people are buying Wii’s for their kids and buying Wii U’s for themselves. It wouldn’t be a bad idea for Nintendo to work on a couple of AAA titles for the Wii or take whatever AAA 1st-party titles they are working on for the Wii U and downscale them for the Wii as well.

    • Madmagican

I’m more suprised that the DS is still outselling the 3DS; I guess Nintendo’s latest stuff is still gaining ground

  • ledreppe

Just 3 more sleeps until it hits the UK!

    • zaln

4 bro, unluss you be goin to a midnight launch?

    • Mitchell

You have to say Europe!!! It’s not all About the UK.

Nintendo.. I am proud of you. From your humble beginnings to one of the top companies in the world, you have truly given me a purpose in life. To buy your consoles and be the best I can be.

  • Nintedward

Overall impressive sales by Nintendo! 1.2M overall is domination !

  • TheUNation

400,000 Wii U consoles sold out in North America in just one week. This is ultimately the start of something unique and BIG for Nintendo… and there’s still more to come next month and year. I cannot wait to get the Wii U and will be looking forward playing it on Christmas Day!

    • Jack

Funny, you don’t write like a child who has to wait until Christmas to play it…

  • MugenHiryu

    3 days, 2 hours and 45 minutes πŸ˜‰

    • MEJM

I’m supposed to get my Wii U delivered to me. I can’t take it if the postal service mess things up and it won’t arrive until after the weekend! >:D

  • Cyber

Looks like the Gameboy has some competition for best selling Nintendo Hardware

    • Nintedward

Best selling hardware ever is The DS , lol.

  • immallama

Umazing :3 It’s great to see all the happiness in all these comments. Not even one single troll comment! (yet)

    Wii U revolution!

  • marioravesto3d

This is fantastic I know they will keep going strong. From super mario on the arcade machine to the wii u always be nintendo fan. They have made some of the best games from mario to zelda have brilliant stories in some of them games lets your imagination run away, forget school forget work your in one hell of story when you play nintendo games.

  • marioravesto3d

  • Platinum

Doe’s this also have the pre-orders as well? I thought GameStop had 500,000 pre-orders?

    • Madmagican

I’m pretty sure this is just a list of the consoles that actually left the stores in the US within the first week

  • nm_nintendo

I’m pretty sure the sells will be high in Europe aswell.

  • nintendoododo

3 days and wii u is Γ  finlande

  • nintendofreak

were r d trolll dey rnt here…….maybe looking for a wiiu

  • Sylux

That’s impressive indeed. Read the sales number on a Dutch website earlier today, but they are always on top of everything plus we live 9 hours later so not strange that some general news about wiiu is going around like a walking fire, and in some cases like this one I read it allready. But it’s a better read here, love the comments from everyone πŸ˜‰

Nevertheless I won’t be able to get my wiiu on the 30th, 1st of all I won’t be home during launch. And 2nd I read that wiiu in Holland is already sold out almost everywhere in preorders only some really big retailers expect to have some left in Holland. And even they say that it’s possible they simply can’t deliver for all preorders and fear they won’t have any left for normal sales, x amount of people who have pre-ordered it will be out of luck. I didn’t pre-order either, no money for it at this time. So I’ll have to wait for a while as well.

But it goes really fast and well in the US, and from what I read and hear it’ll go really well and fast in Europe too, then a week later Japanese release, they love eveything from the big N. So I think before the end of the year the WiiU will reach 1.2 million sales at least. 3 cheers for the big N.

    • Mitchell

      Nederland ftw

      • Sylux

        helemaal mee eens πŸ˜‰
For the non dutchies I said:
        Completely agreed πŸ˜‰

  • Maverick-Hunter

I like how the wii u caught up to the playstation vita sales in just one week despite that the vita “can do the same thing the wii u can do”

    • Clem

Technically speaking no, but the Wii U is still kicking Vita’s butt πŸ™‚

The Vita has sold 2.2 million units as of June 30th (according to Wikipedia). This means that in one week, the Wii U has sold just under 20% of what the Vita sold in five and a half months! I know Black Friday probably helped and all, but I’m sure the Wii U will have no trouble catching up the rest of the way in no time.

      • Zackary Bruley

Keep in mind, the Vita had the same Black Friday the Wii U did. Where is the jump in Vita numbers…? Oh, that’s right.

        • Clem

I’m not disputing that, of course. There’s no saving the Vita at this point, I’d wager.

What I’m saying is that this weekend’s sales should not necessarily be considered indicative of the rate at which Wii U will sell over the next while, though I’m sure they’ll stay high. I’ll make sure to contribute to the Wii U sales as soon as I can afford it πŸ™‚

  • Re_coded

Now I hope it doesn’t end up like the GameCube, selling 500.000 in it’s first week

    • Hmmkay…

they didn’t sold 500.000 in the first week. they sold 500.000 the first six motnhs lol

  • Ricardo

Oh my god last night I had this weird dream about miyamoto chasing me to kill me because I revealed something but I cant remember what is, it was hilarious!!!

  • Leeroy

    • Madmagican

      ]___[ …there, pre-flipped for ya

  • Lazara the Last

Can’t wait ’til I get mine! My GameStop won’t have a midnight release, so it’s 88 hours until I holds it in my hands! Than I only have 24 hours to play on it before I have to visit my family… What should I play the most those 24 hours? I got ZombiU, Mario, Assassin’s Creed III and, of course, Nintendo Land! πŸ˜€

    • Sylux

Mario is casual game imo so go for ac3 and zombiu. My two cents πŸ˜‰

    • marioravesto3d

Which ever one you start you will find hard to stop playing,I would go for zombie u giving all the positive reviews.

  • Johny

wow… not only Wii u but… they sold SO many Wiis and 3ds’s ?? thats impressive… and DS’s too ??? wow… O.o … awsome N ^^ happy for you.. and im happy people dig it πŸ˜€

  • Revolution5268

im curious if the DS has outsold the ps2 yet?

    • TheFarmboy

It’s inching away, but the PS2 still sold more by a slim margin, but both sold over 150 Million units. πŸ˜€

      • Revolution5268

        Β true πŸ™‚

  • Tim van Broekhoven

  • That WOULD be impressive, but the XBox 360 sold 750,000 in the same time period!

  • I hate to say it, but you Wii U buyers will feel the pain that many of my generation felt when we bought the Dreamcast with it very impressive line up of games and graphics and innovation, only to find that Sega was closing up shop! Β That Dreamcast was an example of a near perfect system.!

  • tommarvolo124

    scary but awsome
