Wii U sales

Nintendo domination continues this week in Japan, as the top three consoles in the country are from Nintendo. The Wii U claims the third spot for the third week in a row, below the Nintendo 3DS. This week the Wii U sold nearly 110k units in Japan, compared to last week’s nearly 75k. That’s the sort of sales jump we want to continue to see through the first of the year. keep it going nintendo! the industry needs you to turn it around with the wii u. hopefully the sales continue to rise!

    • Daniel Carvalho

I’d say it’s more like surely. Nintendo is the only one with a steady line-up for 2014 and has more games than the PS4 and Xbox One, not to mention they have more exclusives than anyone else and the cheapest HD console on the market. Also, since they have been for a year on the market already, their system has more stability than the newcomers, making the Wii U the best choice for those who want to play games right away.

  • Theiz Zzee

Actually it was over 200k because another outlet sold 100k too.

    “Japan does not matter”.
Unless of course Wii U sells less than 5k a week in Japan, then “Nintendo is doomed”.

  • RyuNoHadouken

hopefully that trend carries over to the states

    • Jon

it is…. it’s been steady over 100k for the last few weeks in NA.

      YTD unit sales: Wii U (824.965) > PS3 (819.269)

      Who will win?

      • uPadWatcher

It’s all about the U, baby!

      • Josiah Parsons

How about PS4? It wasn’t even on the list, and frankly, the PS4 is the Wii U’s big rival here…

        • DragonSilths

PS4 isn’t out in Japan yet is it? Xbox One isn’t…

          • Nathan C.

I doubt very seriously if the Xbox One can do anything in Japan (just look at 360’s sales).

          • DragonSilths

GBA will sell better in Japan then the Xbox One.

          • tronic307

And won’t be, unless Microsoft wants to waste their time again.

          • Josiah Parsons

            Really? But it’s FROM Japan…

        • ShilaquilOneal

PS4 isn’t out yet in Japan. Not until 2014.

    • BGhp

      HA! Wii U-turn!

    • jjbredesen
  • tom

Im pretty sure the Wii U has moved at least 5 million units by now !

    • Nintedward

Probably more! Good to see the Wiiu massively outselling the Vita this holiday in Japan. Judging by the sale of DS and PSP compare to Wii and PS3 last gen, you would assume that the Vita would outsell the Wiiu there, but the Wiiu did very well!

Happy for wiiu. Bring on more Japanese support.

      • tom

I am excited to see the official figures in North America!

      • tom

What’s up with vgchartz not updated their stuff? I has been nearly 3 weeks.

      • DragonSilths

Everything beats the Vita. Vita should be discontinued and just never mentioned again.

        • Daniel Carvalho

Vita could be saved with proper support from Sony itself, but they seem to have abandoned it and cared only for the PSP. Things are changing for it now that they’ll have the crossplay with the PS4, but I doubt people will buy the Vita just for that.

So, as long as Sony keep things like this, Vita will keep being the joke on the market.

        • greengecko007

In sincerely hope you’re joking, but on the chance that you aren’t…

Saying that the Vita should be discontinued is as ludicrous as people suggesting the same thing to the Wii U. The Vita may not be selling as well as the 3DS, but when has Nintendo not dominated the handheld market? Besides, the newly designed Vita has obviously been selling better to the Japanese audience, and Tearaway releasing earlier this year gave it boost worldwide.

          • DragonSilths

Selling better because there was a week where no fancy new 3DS came out to buy. Everyone in Japan has like 7 3DS’s lol. And no I wasn’t joking. I hate Sony, haven’t respected them as a business since the PS2 days, and I cant wait for them to go bankrupt so I can dance on their grave.

        • Donaald

Why, do you play games or do you play with sales?

          • DragonSilths

I don’t get what your saying? I honestly don’t give a crap about sales, but I get tired of people talking about sales on something that is barely alive.

          • Nathan Verbois

Speak for yourself. I absolutely love the Vita. It’s a fantastic handheld. Sony has been pushing high quality 1st party games like Tearaway and Killzone: Mercenary (though they are still few and far between). It’s a damn good system and I’m glad it’s sales are improving.

I used to not like Sony either, but their debacle with the PS3 launch helped to realign some of their core principles. They’re still a big business that cares ultimately about the bottom line, but now they once again seem to realize that if they create policies that benefit the consumer, it will benefit them in the long run. They have my full support just like Nintendo does. Microsoft’s current handling of the X1 and their handling of the 360 over the last couple of years has been a major disappointment. It’s too bad because a lot of passionate, creative people work there but don’t get to make the policies.

I ultimately want everyone to succeed as it can only benefit the industry and gamers alike.

          • DragonSilths

As you said yourself, speak for yourself.

          • Nathan Verbois

Indeed, I did. Thanks for noticing. 😉

And it really is happening this time!!

  • figs28

Come on people, it’s December. Of course, the numbers have been rising the last 3 weeks. First, it was Holy Mario, now it’s Nintendo strength? It’s just December and not a lot of units for this time of year.

    • verymetal

Tell that to the Xbox 360 in Japan.

    • RedRocBoy

      Nobody wants you here. Leave!

      • Seeker

RedRocBoy when you shut people down like that, it makes our enemies stronger.

  • Seeker

More is better of course. But before we all break out more champagne, the week to week delta is about 35k units.. during CHRISTMAS!! -Not that they celebrate that? -Do they? Is there a Buddist Mr. Jingles?

At this point Nintendo has two choices for 2014.

They already have let Miyamoto’s wishes play out, and it’s not really worked out the best with his strategy.. so..

Nintendo either, will recall either partially or completely the Wii U. -Now that depends what the cost of warehouse space is, and the appetite of retail to hang on to their stock levels during Q1 of 2014..

The other option, is that Nintendo silently winds down Wii U brand production and puts the hardware into another casing, creates a new revised wii-mote with a tiny low-power high-res built-in screen to replace the fat gamepad, or avoids it completely.. and brands the new hardware something completely different.

All I can guesstimate is that Wii U isn’t gonna make it to Christmas 2014 looking like this, Smash Bros. or no.

    • The Clockwork Being

Smash Bros or not really? Dude look at the software for next before making statements like that!

      • Seeker

Yeah, look, I could be wrong, but Smash didn’t turn gamecube around and neither did mario kart double-dash… so while it’s a frighting prospect, I don’t think it’s completely outlandish.. Wii u needs more than just another gamecube game if it’s gonna break out.

        Hey.. let’s see, ok?

Remember my name. If i’m wrong, rub it in my face.

        • SmashFinale

Gamecube didnt DVD support. That’s what really hurt it. If it did then it would have been selling about the same numbers the Original Xbox did.

          • Seeker

The original xbox didn’t sell much more than the gamecube,,,

Besides, the Wii didn’t have DVD or Blu-Ray ability and that outsold both the PS3 and 360…

        • Timothy Boyd

No Smash and Double dash didnt turn the gamecube around however Nintendo still cleaned up on those titles. soo I consider that not much of bad thing tbh.

    • verymetal

Really? There is a reason why your writing about this on a Nintendo based site instead of getting hired to use your market estimate/knowledge on business related issues.

    • ScrewAttack

…..are you on crack or what.

    • Nintenjoe82

I think they have more options available than those two.

Nintendo won’t need to discontinue the Wii U. If that was the case, they’d have already done it like they did with Virtual Boy and 64DD. Their only real problem is retailers favouring other products but that will change if they can keep momentum going. PS4 might manage to live off its own hype train but only for so long with no games and Xbox one is already easy to buy in any GAME shop I’ve seen.

      • Seeker

Alright, sure, just for fun, name at least two distinctly different options they have, in addition?

Virtual Boy was orders of magnitude worse.

Gamecube was discontinued once the physical retail channel had rejected it beyond a tipping point. Today internet shopping warehouses allow more adaptive inventory levels.

Wii U is performing worse than gamecube.

Once you’re out of retail, getting back in with the same product brand takes some expensive persuasion of retailers.

  • 504HotBoy

Here is something I posted on Cinema blend, before people come in here and start making the comment PS4 & Xbox One not out in Japan yet, that’s why it sold well. Also according to Famitsu Wii U actually sold 119,159 units last week. Don’t know which number is more accurate, Media Create or Famitsu.

There’s a lot of people who are delusional about the Japanese market/consumer. They’re letting their love for their favorite developer/system blind them. Sony & Microsoft will be in some serious trouble when they release in Japan and there are no AAA Japanese titles. Why do people think Sony waited till February to release? It isn’t just because they wanted to focus mainly on the Western market to get that edge over Microsoft. It’s also cause they don’t have any serious games for the Japanese consumer available at the time. No Persona, No Monster Hunter, No Tales, No Final Fantasy, No Dragon Quest, etc. There are more Western games on PS4 at the moment. If you think Japanese consumers want to play COD, 2k14, Madden, FPS and all those western games. You’re out your mind. Also Japanese gamers don’t think like Western gamers. Won’t buy a system for specs. Why you think 3DS is killing Vita in sales? It’s the GAMES. 3DS has the GAMES that appeal to their market. I’ll give the PS4 the benefit of the doubt and will honestly say it’s first week of sales should be between 250k to 350k. For the Sony fans out there. But without those Japanese killer apps, the sales will be real low and slow. As for Microsoft they have no way in hell of selling out crazy in Japan. Unless they come out the gate with every AAA Japanese title possible and consistently release them back to back. Even so, it’s an American system. Japan mainly supports their own brand. Which is funny how certain sites/journalist was quick to point out how PS4 & Xbox One reach Wii U lifetime sales so quick in the UK and Wii U been out a year, but neglect to say how Wii U reached Xbox 360 lifetime sales within a year in Japan and 360 been out for 8 years. So please stop saying Wii U only selling well right now cause PS4 & Xbox One aren’t out yet over there. It’s selling well now cause Nintendo have the titles now. It’s 2014 line up will continue to help it sell well. Also Wii U is also selling well in the US, have been since last month. Only in the UK is where it is struggling at. So stop the hate and saying it’s failing in the rest of the world. Where it’s only not doing to well in the UK. But doing great in US & Japan.

    • lonewolf

Well Uk its not a big factor in determine if the wii u sellls or not its only one country Europe has more countries its not just UK so some people fail to see the bigger picture.

  • darkcreap

I’d like to see the global numbers and compare vs PS4 and Xbox One (As far as I remember, the other two next gen consoles have not been released in Japan). Nevertheless, the important moments come in February. Christmas is a especially high moment for sales. What I’d like to see is if this trend continues in the following months.

The important moment for the console is to see if it catches so much interest after the Xmas mayhem. I hope it will, with such a busy year: Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Watch Dogs, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta and many others.

  • shaun

My main question for software sales is does this include digital download? This generation in particular more people are going to be downloading moving forward.. I’ve downloaded all my wii u games…

  • GmailIsDown

this jump was caused by the release of Super Mario 3D World?

    • Theiz Zzee

As well as their new bundles.

Christmas will do that to you.

it time for wii u to rise

If i recall correctly in Japan during Valentine’s day girls give presents to guys and not the other way arounnd so you cann guess what some girls will buy for their boyfriends husbands and etc.

  • goldenfirered136

My best guess for this jump of sale will most likely be because of the release of the new bundles and SM3DW, but also because the PS4 and Xbone has not been release yet, But I am very happy for these sales in Japan, hopefully it is doing the same in other countries.

  • Skelterz

Its crazy that nobody seems to realise that from 2005 to 2010 the best selling software was either a wii or nintendo ds game they literally dominated the market for 5 years non stop hears the link
I find it a little bit rich for people to say that because nintendo have had a so called bad year its all over well clearly they don’t know the market as well as they think they do.

  • starwars360

Good news. Wii U will continue blasts with sales next year when Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros., X, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, Yarn Yoshi, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem and more Wii U exclusive games as well many third party games. Also 3DS continue madness sales next year. Nintendo will continue with printing money!!!!!!!

Wii and Wii U section at my local Target was wiped out the day after Christmas, looked like a zombie attack or something. Not sure if there was some big sale or what. Still had Xbones though, as do most of the local stores here.

Looks like Wii U claimed the second spot and 3DS the third.
