While Nintendo will have about a one year head start in the next gen console battle, being first to the market isn’t important to the company. What is much more important for Nintendo is the Wii U price, says company el presidente Satoru Iwata in an interview. Speaking about the market aspects and the Wii U price, Iwata said: “Being first in the next generation race is not important at all. The Wii U pricing is going to be one of the most important elements”. Iwata added that the gaming industry is different today than it was back when the Wii launched in 2006. Home consoles are facing much stiffer competition from mobile and casual games, and on top of that, the world economy isn’t what it used to be. Nintendo will reveal the Wii U price this Fall. Nintendo has made it clear over the past months that they’re taking the Wii U price situation very seriously. If the company launches with a price that’s too high, they won’t sell enough consoles to build an audience and sell games. But if they price the Wii U too low, the company won’t be making enough money on the system. Which is very important for Nintendo this time around, as the company just had its first ever fiscal loss last year. We’ve previously heard from the company that they won’t be selling the Wii U at a loss. The 3DS launched at that price. Alienfish You had a point until you compared a home console to a portable system. Portable systems are more expensive for lower power because every part needs to be shrunk down and placed on a custom motherboard. Then there’s the matter of basically having 3 video outputs all viewable in one package. Anyways I do think it’s possible for the system to cost $250, but then you add in the expensive controller and it will likely come to $300. pach I believe it will cost $250 for the console+controller because isn’t a beast and the technology they probably used is much more cheaper today. Look, for example, the internal flash storage is only 8gb and those memory chips are cheap today, average price is $3.50 a piece, maybe even less. Remember when Nintendo said that consumers will be “pleasantly surprised”? Alienfish I sincerely hope you’re right, but I think it best to prepare for a higher price tag and be ‘pleasantly surprised’ than hope for a low one and simply be satisfied, or worse, unsatisfied. Shoot for the stars, hit the moon; shoot for the moon, hit the horizon. It’s my belief that you should always aim higher than what is truly realistic since that always seems to bring at worst, the next best result. Use with common sense please. Macarony64 true 16 gb pen drive are a dime a docen sd micro cards and adapters are too. in this age harddrives are old tecnologie and who in ther house dont have spare sd memory from a camera? nejczun998 the wii-u will cost around 350$ and for europe around 300 eur. If the original price for the nintendo 3ds was 250$ then the wii-u must be 100$ more. It has a lto more features and a better screan resolution. If you put this all together you wil see that 350$ is the right price. Thank you Nejczun998 Thepokemonmaster And when was the 3ds Not powerful? (for a handheld look at kid icarus and resident evil) 😛 Wii UoopsSucks I challenge you to a pokemon battle! ‘-‘ Thepokemonmaster Well Nintendo is doing that for a reason… they are at a price loss and if they make a slip up they could ruin their business (and I really hope that doesn’t happen) And Graphics? Theyre way better than current consoles because well, Iv’e played the wii u at the wii u experience! 🙂 gNat ps whats fiscal mean [ second to last line.] mac i think it is the money made from selling a product to the amount of money it takes to make the product. im not 100% sure but it seems correct lol Sham Fiscal mean a year in gaming alex Fisical year is the time of the company in buisnes for example our year star in january end in dicember but the fisical year for mi ntendo can be from april to may after that year is when they show to the investor how much money they made or loose and depend on that they make decision and what to do next Andrew Fiscal means relating to financial matters. It has to do with a company’s fiscal year/quarter. Fiscal Year can start a any point of the year (in many cases based on when the business started) and ends a year later. It is used to separate the calendar year from the financial year. WiiUPlayWithMe:P Fiscal loss means that the company lost money last year, as in they spent more making products than they made selling them. This can likely be attributed to the 3DS selling at a loss. If you really wanna know exactly what it means a Google search should take you about 10 seconds, but this is what Nintendo was saying. They weren’t able to make a profit last year and that’s a bad thing for a business. That’s why it’s important to save money, cause in the business world you won’t always be making it. Sony has been running on losses for the past 4 years, losing billions, but still able to keep going. Lesson in financing for you, always be ready for tough times, cause you never know when they’ll come, how bad they’ll hit you, or how long they’ll last. This may be why we’ve seen such a strong onslaught of Mario franchises since last winter on the 3DS and soon the Wii U. Trying to make back money they lost NINTENDOFANBOY I think the price is going to be $300. The Wii was $250 when it came out, so that price is perfect for the next-gen Console. mac that and nintendo lost money when the wii was selling at $250 even wiith its nearly 10 million sold units i actually wouldnt be suprised if it was priced at $320 to make sure they don’t lose money again, im willing to pay 320 for this boss system Swic11 Nintendo made money on the first wii sold. mac no you dont understand overall they lost money they didnt make a profit like they usually do so they, in turn, lost money. they spent more money making their products than selling the products. it was mostly the fault of the 3DS when it launched at $250. that was too steep for people so they didnt sell as much until they lowered the price. Gamer The Wii made Nintendo $70 of every console sold after taxes till today. It was profit from the get go. You must mean the 3DS. It was the one that stalled a bit, but in September because of its great momentum now the 3DS is making profit. It’s money bags for Iwata and Co. mac yea sure thats what i meant thanks for fixing my mistake. Draco Breach Really… Microsoft would never design anything that ugly. If they did, it would not be sitting in plain sight if I deemed it fit to own – for games that is. The PS4 fanart is cleaner and more aesthetic to the general design theme Sony seems to be going for. The PS2 and PS3 looks similar, but the PS3 is sleeker and more modern. Draco Breach ^Comment doesn’t belong here. I thought I was replying elsewhere… If Wii U Daily staff wishes to, delete these posts… Marq Nintendo has never sold a system at a loss until 3DS. The Wii made money for Nintendo from Day 1. mac lol the xbox 8 looks like the gamesphere from drake and josh lol now they copying tv shows XD Andrew I am still trying to figure out how you would put a game in it. Andrew Nevermind I seen the disc now. How did I miss that? mac lol good job (no troll intended) WiiUPlayWithMe:P XSHERE!!! 😛 it actually does look kinda cool though. I don’t particularly like the Xbox but I’ll give the mock up credit cause it does look like something from a space age movie Alienfish I thought bowling ball when I saw it. Fan concept art is just dumb sometimes. Marmor The Xbox looks like the early Nintendo Revolution. And the PS3 looks somehow cheap nowadays. Well, the original PS2 looks really ugly now but I loved it on launch. I guess the Nintendo style is just more “timeless”. Kyle The xbox is pretty much the ugliest system in existence to me. And I still have one and enjoyed playing it, but that big bulky thing was very ugly. Wii Uoops! We definitely learned this from the Xbox 360. Microsoft didn’t even put a protective buffer in the disc drive! Alienfish The really sad part is how all the people I know who own one just laugh it off. Maybe flawed consoles give people a sense of community? I’ll never understand it. When MS comes out with a console that works and doesn’t charge me monthly, I’ll consider it, until then I’ll be sticking with my Playstations and Nintendos. Wii UoopsSucks You said it partner! Lol Wii UoopsSucks You can say that again partner lol. SuperShyGuy Between $300-$400 USD would be a buy for me. I only need one game and the E shop. Actually I think Nintendo could afford to give away a few Virtual console games as an incentive to buy the Wii U day one Andrew Maybe a coupon in the box. 1 for buying one from the first batch and 2 for pre-ordering. Better yet instead of a coupon a nfc readable card so we do not have to type in the code. Swic11 I really like this idea, Nintendo already has games uploaded for the “Eshop” and it really wouldn’t cost them much. Im buying the “u” anyways but it could be a good incentive for others Marq It would be a brilliant idea, honestly. I’ve always felt Nintendo should have included a 500-1,000 point coupon with every Wii sold. Not even so much as a reward, but to get people who have no idea about the e-shop and Virtual Console to look at it and say, “Hey, the Wii can go online! And I can get some cool games there!” Alienfish’s Grandma The only people worrying about the price are little children who wonder if mummy and daddy will be able to buy it for their christmas present, I however am an adult with a job so I dont care what the price is, I have been saving money away so I will buy with all the games I want – be jealous kids. Also stay the hell out of black-ops2 KTHXBYE Dustin I get the feeling that they might be overestimating the price of the next Microsoft system– which won’t include a $50 controller. Microsoft’s console might only be $100 more than Nintendo’s next Christmas and feature almost $200 more invested in the chips and RAM as MS launches with little intention of profit from the box (where Nintendo is aiming to make $150 on each WiiU). Marq You have no idea what Microsoft is bringing to the table as far as controller interfaces and hardware specs. Save such a post for when something is revealed, please. Andrew Were did this $150 number come from? SanPharaoh I’m sorry, do you work for Microsoft? 3dsguy i hope it will be £300 if price too low than it it cant have much tech in it. it will have to be more expensive than wii alex K say from the biginin it will be 350 joe $350 is too high I believe for your average consumer who likes to play Nintendo games. Even Nintendo knows that. The more chip sets they buy off of AMD or IBM, or whoever, the better deal they get on them, so the price for components won’t be as high. Nintendo made so much money on the Wii, but as with any company, they put their money in so many other place, R&D is a HUGE money pit. The perfect example is that Nintendo has sold 95million Wii’s world wide, and made a profit on every one sold….and then after 5-6 years, have a loss and bleed red ink. Alot of the cash went into what would be the Wii U, prob had a small team designing it around Wii launch time. Yes I know the 3ds caused some pain, but Nintendo is doing well with it AND with Wii U coming, some really cool games for all systems, the money fights in the cafeteria at Nintendo with resume..!! And that’s awesome. Non-Specific Action Figure I don’t want to anger some of you Sony/Microsoft Fanboys, But Nintendo’s really smart, and will beat them some how, Sorry! 😛 WiiUPlayWithMe:P Will the Xshere also be a functional disco ball? I’ll get one and hang it on my ceiling to get some cool lighting while my friends and I play my Wii U 😀 Nintengoth My perfect price woul be about £249-£299 i dont know what that is to you yanks im not good with the dollar lol seeing that still now the average price of a basic ps3 bundle is arond £250+ you just know that sony will fail, again. Nintendo, you know i will always buy your products no matter what the price, but i do think the WiiU bundle should be under £299.99, that should include… WiiU Console 1 x Gamepad 1 x Pro Controller Nintendo Land + 1st Party Title I dont know this could be what you get! i sure hope so hehe. Paul yeah im also predicting a £250 or £300 with 2 games aswell Swic11 I swear Iwata has said this a million times Nintendo Defender #1 I dont expect it to be more than 350 or less than 285, im really hoping for a happy meduim so i can get all the REALLY good games at launch SanPharaoh Same here. I want at least 3 games on day one, and I assume they will be at least 50 each. Maverick-Hunter Man your all dumb, they didn’t lose money because they made them cheaper, they made the wii cheaper because, everyone already has one so to keep sales going they slashed the prices and seeing as nintendo is hitting that big 10mil mark they are in a great position for a new console. But they did a guinea pig strategy releasing the 3ds they leanred from their mistakes which were PRICE & GAMES. All I’ve seen from the wii u is online features which attracts 3rd party companies which results in more games. Indie games and dlc thats a market practically untouched by nintendo. And hello first party games are a no problem ugh can any one say HD Mario/Samus/Link yeah enough said nintendo nailed every issue for a launch of a console. I can’t wait I’m very excited. ax-el I’m thinking in spend around $600 USD in Wii U on week one (i’m from Mexico so maybe i can’t buy it day 1 u_u ) for the console, 2 or 3 games maybe and the extra controller if possible, so my prediction is not more of $350 for console (because the controller). The BIG difference between Nintendo and sony/microsoft is the finesse, the first xbox is a brick, heavy because all the internal components, the same happen with PS3 and 360 (all the power of the console is because several chips and ram=YLOD/RROD), nintendo release elegant consoles, smaller and with innovation in them (not need of slim version), and yet powerful, it’s a big difference (and not YLOD or RROD) imho. Andrew I was thinking about this since that article Wii U daily released with the picture of the Nintendo systems stacked on top of each other. Microsoft would just be two identical boxes stacked on top of each other. Sony would be a crush PS under a crush PS2 under a PS3 SkateRyan I think tiered bundles would be perfect. Base bundle would be Wii U with a ProPad, but no GamePad or prepackaged game. The premium bundle would be Wii U with a GamePad and NintendoLand. You could easily drop the price by not including the GamePad in one of the models, and all of the games announced so far have the option to not use the GamePad (except NintendoLand). If I have my information wrong, I apologize. However, I think the tiered idea would be awesome for this console release, because there would be the base for those who may not buy into the GamePad, and then the people who want this awesome new innovation alongside their Wii U. Andrew The gamepad is an important part of the Wii U so it is unlikely their will be a system without one. Besides if their was a bundle with just a pro eventually there will be a game that would be better using the gamepad. Meaning that one would need to be purchased separately. SkateRyan I think, from a marketing standpoint, that it would be a good idea to cater to those who aren’t really going to use the GamePad as well as those who are. kirbymon123 So basically nintendo is releacing the price and launch date…. at launch date 😛 Matthew Vogt the only reason why the wii sold the most was price and that will happen for this system if any console that price is everything for its the wii u if the ps4 and new xbox have high prices it will still be bought cause playstation and xbox fans are the most devoted and I can admit this the ones that talk the most sh!t cause after all the ps3 was the better console this gen it can be factually based the xbox and ps3 games are both closely equal in goodness just ps3 had more features that made it better the wii had more returns to pawn shops and gamestops than ps3 and xbox’s did but like I have said so many times the ps4 and xbox 720 are not per say whats going to kill the wii u its whats the price is going to be and the ouya the ouya is what is really going to kill the wii u and the new xbox and ps are just more reasons and thats not even the tip of the iceberg but hey i can say we will have to wait and see cause the ps fanboy like myself or the xbox fanboy could get shut up was majorly crazy about the next ps4 but I am equally not more excited for the ouya not alot know about that its coming out next year you seriously need to check it out Manhattan Sony DID rip off Sony DID rip off Nintendo. In the late Super Nintendo Years around the time of Sega CD, Nintendo waetnnd something similar. They worked in conjunction with Sony to make a CD add on for Super Nintendo. This never came through because the Nintendo 64 was coming out. Sony kept the prototype modified the controler and to avoid lawsuits, added two extra buttons and and added those pointless plastic things that make my palms go red after an hour of Ratchet & Clank. Even check the contoller ports!-SG TheBrainJemin Those better not be the real designs of the ps4 and xbox720, cuase they look like sh*t. Zak Iceblade I do agree TBJ, they do look like s***. I mean the ps4 looks like a part of a printer and the xbox looks like it was changed from a computer hardrive into a bowling ball. If that cirlce consel of crap really is the official design, then maybe they should change the name into the xsphere. Zak Iceblade What is wrong with videogame companys these days? Dont they know that they dont have to price the wii u for $250 or $300, they could simply price it in between like mayble $270 – $280 or something.
