Aug 21st, 2012

Finally, after much anticipation, Nintendo has set a date for the Wii U price and launch date unveil: September 13, 2012. The company has announced that it will hold a special press event in New York hosted by Reggie Fils-Aime. Reggie is expected to unveil the final Wii U details, inducing price and launch date. The Wii U has long been rumored to launch on November 18, 2012, at a $299 price point.

Wii U priceNow, Nintendo didn’t specifically say in their announcement that the event will reveal the Wii U price and launch date, but everything is pointing in that direction. The whole purpose of the event is the Wii U, and the company has a history of revealing launch details at special events. Last time Nintendo and Reggie held an event in NY, they revealed the 3DS price and launch date.

For the Wii U, the only things left to reveal at this point are the price, launch date, and launch games. And perhaps the system specs, but those will likely be unveiled once the console launches and someone decides to open the box to see what’s inside. Other things Nintendo could potentially unveil are different Wii U models and colors, and of course some more details on the Wii U accessories (including the price of those).

September 13th: The day Sony decide how much Playstation 4 will cost.

    Answer: “Only” $499!

    • Newtman

I think you mean “Only four hundred and ninety nine US Dollars”

    • iKNOW

SO THAT MEAN BLACK OPS 2 will be a launch title!

      • iKNOW

        well maybe i ment!

    • pach

Also the day of the ps3/x360 price cut.

  • D2K

Now we’re talking. Hopefully everything we need to know about the Wii U will be announced there or before then.

    • Kamon

Me too. It’s time for Mr. Iwata to drop the bomb.

      • D2K

For me the ‘bomb’ would be dropped if Iwata announced that Nintendo successfully completely negotiations with Microsoft to reacquire it’s old franchises from Rare and that Killer Instinct 1 & 2 will be available in 1080p HD graphics on the Nintendo Network at launch.

Of course, that won’t happen. 🙂

        • AKA-Link77

          Im just gunna go kill myself about something else now…. X~{

        • Nintendude

          *sniff* Banjo… *sniff* why….

          • Madmagican

I feel ya, I grew up with those games… anyway, EIGHT MORE DAYS!!!! 😀

          • Master Awesomeness

Played them since birth, and have other people. I understand.

  • Nintendnerd

  • Ben

    The faster the better.

    • vge

Couldn’t agree more. Thankfully September isn’t far away

  • Marcos

    Wii U pre order 13 September o.o I’ll get a Wii U.

    • Master Awesomeness

It’s been available for preorder since 2011. Late 2011.

  • Maverick-Hunter

^__^ excellent price perfect time for a release i’m happy with this news

    • Grodus

Those were just rumors, and the real date and price will most likely be revealed september 13.

  • PolarsPass

I cannot wait, hopefully $300, if its higher I will still get it.

  • Undecided

Can’t wait to find out how much it will cost. I’m hoping the pro controller won’t be expensive.

    • D2K

I’m guessing that nothing from the Wii U will be more expensive that anything of it’s kind on the market right now.

There is no reason for the system to be more than $299 even though it is more powerful than the PS3 and 360. No reason for the pro controller to cost anymore than a 360 or PS3 controller. It serves the same exact function.

Pretty much all the accessories it will use are already on the market right now (Wii-Remote, Wii Balance Board, etc.) The only thing that might be pricey would be the Wii U GamePad by itself. I read somewhere that it might retail for $80 but that is less than what was initially projected.

      • LyingTuna

I heard that the Pro Controller won’t vibrate, so it should be less expensive than the 360 or PS3 ones. Actually, the ps3 one also has some kind of motion sensitivity, doesn’t it? It should cost more than the 360 one then! Smartglass doesn’t add to the value…

        • XDLugia

No rumble? That makes it no different from a Classic Controller Pro!

          • 007 1/2

can i use a classic controller on the wii u?

        • D2K

Rumble-feature more than likely will be in the controller. I can’t see why it wouldn’t be. The PS3 controller has the ‘six-axis’ feature which gives it some limited motion-sensing functions. There was a legal issue why at first the PS3 controller could not use rumble. Once that got cleared up they were able to release the Dual-Shock 3.

I wouldn’t imagine the Wii U Pro controller costing more than $50.

        • Britton

That is true… SmartGlass will not add to the value $$ wise and also for gamplay. SmartGlass has little value period. 🙂

          • NoPUNintendo

SmartGlass is really stupid. I mean. They expect someone, who is working, driving, or even possibly just in a public place to start playing some 360? I’m sorry but as cool and great as video games are, there is a time and place for them.

          • u mad bro

guys the rumble feature is just a gimmick. anyways cant wait for the WiiU.

          • Nintendude

            @ u mad bro
Really? Cause it seems that nowadays the rumble feature is a standard for every controller out there. I think it makes you a little more immersed when the controller rumbles, like when you get hurt, fire a weapon, or something else happens.

          • AKA-Link77

LOOK IM IN OUTER SPACE! ;D

          • Grodus

@NoPUNintendo Thats what we have handhelds for. 😉

      • Master Awesomeness

There’s nothing on the market like the wii u, if you haven’t noticed.

        • 007 1/2

          except for smart(gl)ass.

  • Mida

    Too much teasing!

  • CheckItNow12

    Awesome. Better mark my calander!

  • Britton

It feels good to have a date that will reveal a date… for the release. I will be anxiously waiting on this website to found out the price of the WiiU!

  • JC

    OMG what a coincidence that’s my b-day :D!!!!

    • Ravyu

      Happy B’Day!

  • tekkentagU

i hope it’s priced at $299! and that they have a bundle with a pro controller at like $350

    • Nintedward

      i want a nintendo land bundle !!!!

    • 007 1/2

the pro shouldnt cost more than 30

  • Platinum Chaos

It’ll put a BIG smile on my face if they decided to announce Majora’s Mask remake for Wii U. 😛

Even just a Zelda title at launch will make me one very happy chappy. 😀

    • Lord Carlisle

Yeah, that would be great, but it’s a little late for an announcement like that. Plus, Nintendo has said that they won’t make another Zelda remake until after the original Zelda comes on the 3DS.

I wonder if it will be in the adult Link style or the Toon Link style.

      • mr. shplooblah.

wait… what “original” Zelda? as in The Legend Of Zelda? i have that from the Ambassador Prog.

        • Lord Carlisle

Nintnedo has said that before they release another Zelda remake, they want to finish the current Zelda game that they’re working on for the 3DS.

        • someone

no he means as in a brand new original game(aka not a remake)

        • Daemonrunner

I think Lord Carlisle is referring to an original Zelda title for the 3DS that Miyamoto referenced in a previous interview, not the original Legend of Zelda NES game.

  • Uribemaster

A Majora’s Mask remake would be awesome. Another game that would be awesome is a sequal or remake of either Donkey Kong 64 or Chrono Trigger.

    • Undecided

      I loved DK64

  • MR.nintendo

    feeling up

  • test

so a realese date for a releace date?

    • SteampunkJedi

Yes. That shows how desperate we all are.

  • gPadWatcher

Thursday, September 13, 2011… a date which will live in infamy… a date that the President and COO of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime drops the bomb on the price and release date of the Nintendo Wii U. The loud roar of cheers from the crowd can be heard from New York City all the way to Kyoto.

When the Wii U is launched in North America and Japan first, the millions… and millions… of people from all walks of life will be marching down the department store and purchase the Wii U including accessories and games. The next day, the entire world…

    • Lord Carlisle

      * sniff * That was beautiful, man.

    • Crapcake

      Um, you’re a year behind. Seriously? 2011? It’s 2012!

      • gPadWatcher

Thanks for that correction. My bad.

    • wiiufanatic

  • Wii u crazer

i might skip school just to see when it might come out.

    • mr. shplooblah.

i *will* skip school for that reason ;D

      • Macarony64

i will stay at home cause the anouncement will be at 6 to 9 pm and not in the morning

        • Lazyboy88

That depents on where your from…

  • SteampunkJedi

I hope the price is what has been predicted, or at least not too much more. I’ll Just have to wait for September 13th and see now. (Hopefully.)

  • James

I do a boring and repetitive job to pay for my Nintendo stuff (and eventually Wii U).

Oh how it makes me happy to come home and read this glorious news.

  • revolution5268

i remember they did something similar with wii on the new york press.
    (correct me if im wrong)

  • gPadWatcher

To the mod– According to Nintendo of America, the Wii U special press event in NYC begins at 10:00am EDT.

    • Macarony64

    • meliza

Nice!!! I wish my Birthday was sep. 13 then my mom would buy it for me.

  • nintendoododo

I hope wii u is coming to europe first

  • Bravyoura

September 13th can’t wait they should bring back the slogan “now your playing with power”

Oh hang on shouldn’t that be “now your playing with X2 power so you might not notice a difference for a year or two compared to the current generation” by which time a better slogan might be “now your back where we started”

    • D2K

Since the Wii U is far superior then the current-gen power-wise and because the the 720 and PS4 will not be much more powerful if at all the slogan should be…

“Now you are playing with power, slightly less, but unnoticeable power unless you are a graphics junkie.”

PS3 and 360 graphics aren’t gonna get any better than they are now, hwere as developers making games for the Wii U aren’t even using 25% of the systems’ power. Even if the Wii U has hardware directly on-par with the current-gen (meaning the CPU, GPU and memory were at the same EXACT power level) it would still be more powerful becuase technology is faster and more efficient it was 7 years ago.

However we already know that based off of the specs from last year the Wii U runs circles around the PS3 and 360 in terms of power. The final Wii U dev kits are even more powerful than that. By the time the Wii U tops-out on graphics and you start to see a noticiable difference between Wii U games and PS4 games, Nintendo will be ready to release their next-next generation system while Sony and Microsoft will be stuck in the middle.

There reason why I can say that are for a few reasons. One, Nintendo has stayed true to their 5 to 6 year schedule. Another thing is that the Wii U will sell at a profit from day one where as if Microsoft and Sony want their systems to have any signicant power advantage over Nintendo they would have to sell ther systems at a loss for the second straight generation. It took 4 years for either system to make a profit. Not only that, Microsoft lost billions on the whole RROD issue which they are still trying to dig out of, and Sony is losing money all over the place in every division. Finally, the latest reports are that both Microsoft and Sony are going ‘off-the-shelf’ in terms of production of the PS4 and 720. Microsoft has stated they want the 720 to retail for $299, and Sony CEO Kaz Hirai flat out stated that the PS4 will NOT be a signiciant jump in power. 3rd party studios are shutting down left and right because that cannot afford to invest millions of dollar producing high-end AAA titles that don’t sell because the words “Call Of Duty” don’t appear in the title.

What this means is that the chances of the PS4 and 720 have anymore than a marginal power increase are slim-to-none.

      • 007 1/2

if u take the time 2 read all of that, he is very right.

I’m most def getting the Wii u at launch got the money ready an plus already preordered ZombiU, Mario Bros. U, Rayman, and scribblenauts. I just hope that it do come with some kind of bundle. That will be awesome

  • Madmagican

TWO MORE DAYS!!! I can’t help but wonder if Nintendo won’t give a price and release date… that would be horrific

  • Fredrik

Uhm. The price is already REVEALED where I live (Norway, Europe).
Was actually revealed like a week ago.

It’s 3990 NOK (in $ that is 694 USD). Though usually when something costs 1000 NOK or 2000 NOK or 3000 NOK here, it’s $100 and $200 and $300 in the US. So chances are big that it will be $399 in the United States.

    FYI 🙂

  • Madmagican

17 more hours… wonder how I’m gonna fill that time frame…*ponders*

  • roedburn

I’m going to predict that you’re right. XD

The U.S. release date is Nov. 17th. I just got news of it on
Price is $229 and $349 for higher gb.

    • roedburn

You’ve got the right prices but not the right date, it’s coming Nov. 18th.
