Holiday Wii U Console

The holidays are coming up: a time of love, joy, peace on earth, and crass consumerism; which means it’s time for gift giving! With this guide you can give the gift of Wii U games (and accessories) to your friends and family! Assuming of course you live on the North American Continent, our Holiday Gift Guide for Europe will be published separately and should be published soon. But for those of you in the US and Canada, read on!

Wii U Bundles

If you have friends or family members who don’t own a Wii U, but you think might like one, now is probably the best time to get them one. Right now you can get the Wii U one of three different bundles; each one costs the same at exactly $299.99 (+ tax) and comes with different games and accessories:

  • Wii U Deluxe Set – The Wii U Deluxe Set comes with a black 32GB Deluxe Wii U along with a copy of New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U. Mario games tend to be some of the best and most polished games you can get on a Nintendo system, plus everybody loves Mario, so who wouldn’t want to get this bundle for Christmas this year?
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Deluxe Set – This set comes with not only black 32GB Deluxe Wii U and a digital copy of the amazing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, but it also comes with a unique Zelda themed GamePad and even a digital download of the Hyrule Historia, the official Legend of Zelda encyclopedia. This collection is a must have for any big Zelda fans or anyone looking to get into this amazing series, and it would make a great gift this holiday.
  • Wii U Skylanders SWAP Force Bundle – This Wii U bundle includes a white 8GB Basic Wii U along with a copy of Nintendo Land and Skylanders SWAP Force along with three Skylander figures, a Portal of Power which is used to play Swap Force, a poster, three trading cards, and three stickers with secret codes. This bundle would make a great gift for the child in your life.

But of course what is a Wii U without games? If the person you’re shopping for this season already has a Wii U, you should check out these fine games! The Wii U has some great stuff in its library right now, and these 10 games are some of the best that you could get someone this Christmas. These games are listed in no particular order.

Pikmin 3

Pikmin 3 is the latest in the Pikmin series; the Pikmin games are a strange hybrid of real-time strategy and action-adventure, and Pikmin 3 is a hard to classify and yet incredibly fun experience you can only have on the Wii U. In it you play as three different space ship captains as you command up to 100 tiny creatures called Pikmin to help you find fruit seeds to send to send home to save your dying planet, while at the same time keeping enough fruit juice on hand to keep you alive for another day.

For old fans of the series who’ve played the first two games on the GameCube, everything you loved about the game returns plus tons of new and interesting features, and for new comers the game is interesting and easy to get into, without requiring any knowledge from previous games in the series. The game is probably the most gorgeous on the Wii U right now and is really a must have for any Wii U owners out there.

The Wonderful 101

The Wonderful 101 is an interesting and completely unique game that is exclusive to the Wii U. In it you play as a group of up to 101 super heroes (as you might have gathered from the title), whom you combine, Voltron-style, into different gigantic weapons by drawing shapes on the GamePad, each weapon suited to a different task or enemy. This game is fast paced, full of challenge, has a humorous story and would make a great gift to appeal to any Wii U owner this holiday season.

Disney Infinity

Disney Infinity would be an excellent gift for any children you might know, and most adults would probably enjoy it as well. Disney Infinity is a massive open world/sandbox/platformer… you know what? It’s hard to describe. It’s massive though, with several Disney series represented and each one having different types of gameplay. The game is fun and friendly and fairly easy, plus, similar to Skylanders Swap Force, there these little figurines you can collect to unlock new characters and stages, which appeal to the kids and themselves might make a good gift for someone who already has the game.

Zombi U

A good gift idea for those Wii U fans who are a little older, Zombi U is an under appreciated gem and is one of the best and scariest survival horror titles in years, which we’ve covered in detail previously here on Wii U Daily. Zombi U, despite a somewhat silly title is one of the more “mature” games for the Wii U right now and can provide a truly amazing experience. Not everyone appreciates its unique gameplay though, it definitely emphasizes the “survival” part of the survival horror genre; think more Silent Hill than Dead Rising, but for those with the patience and nerve, Zombi U should prove to be one of the most exciting and intense games they could get this holiday season.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

black flag 2
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is, confusingly, the sixth game in the Assassins Creed saga, despite what the title may tell you. In this installment of the series you continue to explore the genetic memories of Desmond Miles, this time exploring the life of his ancestor Edward Kenway, who himself explores the seas as a privateer turned pirate, who is also an Assassin.

While series veterans will probably appreciate the game’s story, there’s a lot of gameplay here that even new players can enjoy, as you explore the seas in an open world, pirate passing ships, hunt, fish and assassinate people. Really you’ll be doing everything a pirate assassin would be expected to do (assassinate pirates?), and what better gift could you get for the mature Wii U gamer this holiday season than the gift of piracy?

Batman: Arkham Origins

You know what’s better than a pirate? A ninja you say? Ha! No. Batman. Batman is better than a pirate. And that is why you should get Batman: Arkham Origins for any Wii U owners you know this holiday season. It’s a fun, tight, and well-made stealth, action-adventure game, in which you play as Batman; which is all the reason you really need, honestly. It’s a prequel, so you don’t have to worry if whoever you’re getting this for hasn’t played the earlier games in the series, as they don’t need any foreknowledge to get into the game’s story or characters. What could be better than getting someone the gift Batman this holiday season?

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut is a cyberpunk themed shooter with stealth and RPG elements; it was originally released for the PC over two years ago to widespread acclaim. Although it’s a little obscure it’s probably the best shooter on the Wii U right now, it rewards several different play styles and a lets you customize the main character to suit your play style, it has tense stealth sections and exciting boss fights and an intricate and compelling story.

Even for those who’ve played the original, this game would make an excellent gift due to the improvements included on the Wii U version; the Wii U GamePad is a must have for the hacking minigames. And for those who didn’t get to enjoy it the first time around this will probably still be one of the best games you could get them this holiday season.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Monster Hunter Tri was originally released on the Wii in 2010 and the updated version, or “Ultimate” version, if you will, was released on the Wii U and 3DS just this year. The Monster Hunter series is about hunting monsters. The game is intensely challenging though, it’s full of interesting areas and inspiring boss battles. Each time you run into a new boss monster you have to learn its attack patterns and figure out which weapon and strategy is best to defeat it. Each new monster you run into requires skill, strategy and timing to beat and it’s an intensely satisfying feeling every time you take one of the behemoths down.

Of course once you’ve beaten enough monsters you can fashion their skin and bones into a stylish new hat and sword with which you can more easily defeat the next giant monster you come across. While the game was released for the 3DS as well as the Wii U, the Wii U version is the only version with online play, which is one of the most integral parts of any Monster Hunter game, and right now Monster Hunter provides one of the best and most intense online experiences for the Wii U. All in all this is one of the best games you could get for someone this Christmas.

Super Mario 3D World

It’s a Mario game. On a Nintendo system. What more reason could you possibly need to get it for someone this holiday season? Fine, I’ll give you some reasons. Super Mario 3D World is the latest game in Nintendo’s flagship Mario Bros series. It’s continued the series current trend of keeping it easy enough that new and casual players can get the hang of and enjoy it, yet it has enough challenge to keep even the oldest and most hardcore veterans entertained.

It’s fun, polished and everything you expect out of a Mario game. Plus, it has Mario in an adorable kitty suit! What more could you really want? Really, there’s no reason that this game wouldn’t make a great gift to just about anybody this holiday season.

Injustice: Gods Among Us

Is it unfair that I’m featuring Batman on this list twice? Nah, after all you can never have too much Batman! Anyway, Injustice: Gods Among Us is a fighting game set in the DC Universe featuring everybody’s favorite DC heroes and villains, like Superman, Wonder Woman and of course Green Lantern. Injustice is a solid fighter, with interesting levels that play well into the combat, as each level has different objects that characters can jump off, or throw, be knocked through or even be countered, making each level a treat to fight.

There’s both online and local multiplayer and both are immensely fun and rewarding. The story is a interesting (if somewhat clichéd) look at the DC comics mythos that should make this game a worthwhile gift for longtime DC Comics fans and relative newcomers alike.

But the games aren’t all there is for the Wii U! No, you’ve got to accessorize! If you’re looking for a cool gift to get someone the holiday season and don’t have the money to spend on a new game or system, these fun Wii U accessories make great gifts for Wii U owners and are sure to make this holiday bright!

  • Mario and Luigi Wii Remotes ($39.99 each) – Two of the more interesting accessories you can get for your Wii U are these Mario and Luigi themed Wii remotes. Although the Wii U doesn’t come with Wii remotes they’re used in more than a few Wii U games, so they’re definitely worth getting. Colored in red and green and decked out with Mario and Luigi’s trademark ‘M’ and ‘L’ symbols, these Wii remotes not only liven up the experience of playing New Super Mario Bros U or Super Mario 3D World with friends, but also give off a real Christmassy vibe. They’re sold separately and retail for $39.99 each. If you’re feeling like getting someone you know some Wii remotes this holiday season, then these are the Wii remotes to get.
  • Wii Balance Board ($19.99 Pre-Owned)/ Wii Fit Meter ($19.99) – The Balance Board was originally made for the Wii to use while Playing Wii Fit, and is now used in the sequel, Wii Fit U;  which studies have show helps with diabetes and overall well being! It measures balance, weight and all sorts of other things to help keep you healthy and fit this holiday season. The Wii U Fit Meter was created especially for Wii Fit U. It acts as a pedometer and allows you to keep track of your workout even when not using Wii Fit U. In fact by getting the stand alone Wii Fit Meter you can get a free copy of Wii Fit U, by downloading the demo off the eShop!
  • Nyko’s Charge Station U ($24.99)– If the Wii U had a flaw, the GamePad’s battery life would be it. Nyko’s Charge Station U might just be the solution to that problem allowing your potential giftee to charge both their Wii U’s GamePad and two Wii Remotes at the same time. This stylish product looks great in any gamers room and even angles the Wii U GamePad so it can be more easily used for streaming content. Nyko’s Charge Station U is definitely a gift any serious gamer would want this holiday season.

What Wii U related things would you like this holiday season? Let us know in the comments!

  • NintenScience

    Super Mario 3D World
    Pikmin 3
    Wonderful 101

  • RyuNoHadouken

i pray they make a ZombiU sequel

    • Luna Moonfang

Why the downvotes?! ZombiU was epic!

      • Guest

        lol, the downvotes

      • icebear80

Some people can’t handle a challenge and just want to shoot their way through a game with infinite ammo :/

    • Steve

If I’m not mistaken, ubsoft did say it did not sell as they had hoped. So, with that in mind, as equal seems unlikely. But things can always change.

      • Nintedward

They were chatting out of their asses. It sold nearly half a million copies for a game that at times felt unfinished…

Was a great game, but could be a lot better.

        • Levi Johansen

It’ll sell more when there are more Wii U’s on the market, then they might reconsider.

Nomatter what though, ZombiU is not the last exclusive from Ubisoft.

        • Daniel Carvalho

It’s that problem with third parties. They expect every single game to sell as much as AAA title, no matter how much effort was put into it. ZombiU is a great title, and surely serves as base for the upcoming titles that Ubisoft may come up with, specially if they decide to work on a survival horror again, the problem is it doesn’t have a name.

Assassin’s Creed, Raging Rabbids, Watch Dogs and many other games from Ubisoft sell well today because they have a name, a brand, are part of a franchise, to support the sales of new titles; Zombi U doesn’t! That’s what made the game have average sales (and the fact that every review treated it as a failed action game didn’t help as well), but that’s all. If they start working on it as a franchise, surely the sales for the next titles will be great!

        • Rinslowe

          That’s pretty much it.

  • Jason Hills

Although mentioned in a bundle, I’m a bit surprised Wind Waker wasn’t on the list of games. Otherwise, great list.

    • I can see where you’re coming from, in my original draft Wind Waker was in the list of games, but I thought since it did have it’s own bundle it would be unfair to include it twice, especially since there are so many other great games for the Wii U out now. So I decided to only feature the Wind Waker bundle and let it stand in for the game as well.

      • Rinslowe

        Can’t please em all…
But you got it 99% right my friend. And that is infinitely better than most.

        • Well thank you!

          • Rinslowe

Liking all the new work from you guys…. Keeping it interesting.

  • Jack5221

I bought WinderWaker HD and the 32g bundle with NSMBU +SL for my sisters this christmas. Im making a surprise visit to my family this year for christmas. Since my sister loved Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword I got her WW HD, and since my other sister loves anything with Mario in it she’ll enjoy NSMBU. Im excited to give it to them, I know they’re going to love it. As for all the other awesome Wii U games, my grandparents / parents will have to pick all those up for them. Lol xD.

EDIT: Also, really nice guide you wrote there!

  • Nintedward

NSMBU, NSLU , Nintendo Land , ZombiU , Lego City , Monster Hunter , PIkmin 3 , W101 , Windwaker HD, 3D world, Wii party U, Wii fit U, Wii sports Club, Scribblenaughts games, Rayman Legends, Sonic Lost world and a load of great multiplat and third party games and a load of Indie games and a load of Virtual console games.

Wiiu has lots of games now and 3D world is the best of them all.

    • GermGerm

Wii Sports Club works really well. I wish more people were playing it!

      • DragonSilths

Would be better if you could partner up with a friend. For Tennis for example. You and a guy on your friends list against 2 random guys who are partnered up.

  • mac

  • Kenshin0011

I would say the Deluxe Bundle is the best since NSMBU and the Luigi DLC is a staple that you wouldn’t want to miss. Also, AC4 for Wii U is the best! So much fun!

  • Rinslowe

This is my kind of article! Love it. People can really do something with this information. It’s useful, it’s helpful and it outlines multiple reasons to invest in a Wii U without any of the politics…

  • wober2

i would buy someone windwaker (on its own) rayman legends, and need for speed mostwanted too… maybe even eshop gift cards for vc games!

  • Wighead

For those who think that AC4 has frame rate drops compared to PS360, as DF stated, it should be noted that an update as taken care of the problem. Now I can say that the wiiu version (and yes it includes better grafics) is the clear winner against last gen console. (I have AC4 for wiiu and I noticed a BIG difference since the update).

  • TheMoeses

excellent.! πŸ™‚ seems like a we have a Xmas Winner….

  • Deadpool U

This makes wanna buy a Wii U all over again!

  • Louie

I advise everyone who is even remotely interested in picking up the Wonderful 101 to go out and get it, its great! Platinum games need support as many of their titles don’t receive they sales figures they deserve (Bayonetta 1)

So people please don’t let the Wonderful101 become a hidden gem and another example for haters to say “3rd party support for Nintendo sucks!”

In short my fellow gamers please put your money where your mouth is and support 3rd party titles for Wii U, support Platinum games for stepping outside of the dull brown and grey borders that make other developers scared of stepping away from repetitive FPSs. Its breath of fresh air to see a game with so much color, action and new ways to use the Gamepad. The wonderful 101 is great addition to the the Wii Us strong library so show it the love it deserves.

    • Nintenjoe82

Well said, I’ve also been trying to get this across. Platinum are a fantastic studio and one of the only ones with a bit of flair and imagination these days. If we don’t support their games properly, we’ll never see them on Wii U again.

I’m getting it this xmas for something my family can enjoy..

  • Simon Stevens

I envy all these kids and gamers getting to open there wii u’s on Christmas, the last time I was truly excited like that was the Christmas when I got my ds lite (a long ass time a go), I bet opening the Wii U is like opening the Gamecube all over again, I got Spyro and smash, later on in the day my nan gave me sonic adventure 2, I think for me my Christmas presents would be, mario 3d world, sonic lost world and wind waker hd, that would have to be one special Christmas morning, although truthfully, nothing will ever replace my Gamecube Christmas.

    • Nintedward

I got a Gamecube on Launch day as a kid, well it was my big bros but we shared a room! And he let me keep it when he moved out πŸ™‚ I still have the very same cube like new with me today. Works like new πŸ˜‰

The best Christmas for me was my Dreamcast, I think it was 2000 or 2001, can’t remember. I got PSO ver 2. with a Keyboard. Crazy taxi , Sonic adventure , Virtua fighter and Chu chu rocket.

      best Christmas ever….

      • Simon Stevens

It’s still standing as my favourite system of all time, I could never bring myself to give it away, I still have quite a selection for it, was playing it the other night in bed with my super long controller lead of death πŸ˜€ was playing on Vex, if you remember that? πŸ™‚ may switch to Billy Hatcher tonight though,

Amazing how advanced the Dreamcast was, wasn’t it?, it’s own web browser and everything, Sega were always ahead of the times, way ahead, they made some poor decisions but for the right reasons, if that makes any sense?, I miss my dreamcast, I gave it to my cousin and instantly regretted it.

      • Mario

Hey, me too! It was the first Nintendo console I ever owned.

      • Shota

HEY! me too!! dreamcast best christmas!!!

  • Assassinated23

Rayman Legends ought to be up there. That game is excellent.

  • Fred

Thanks for putting Wonderful 101 on there. I think it is BY FAR the most underrated Wii U game!!!

  • Great guide! There are some good time sinks in there.

  • Dylan Clark

if you think anyone will buy a Wii U when for 100 dollars more they can get a next gen console you must be off your rocker.

    • simkenno

Firstly Wii U is next Gen. >.<
And yes because with the new Mario 3d World, Rayman Legends, Wonderful 101, NSMB U, Pikmin 3 and all the amazing new games like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros coming out it would certainly take someone who's off there rocker to go buy a PS4 or Xbox One now with all the great games out…… Have fun playing Knack over and over again πŸ™‚
PS I own an Xbox One currently but I definitely recommend a Wii U before it with the current games library the Wii U has and what's coming out. πŸ™‚

      • RyuNoHadouken

Knack is actually a good game….and its hard!! not because of level or enemy design, but because they deal so much damage…my son loves playing it…im playing BF4 on my XBOne most of the time…that game is great….when it works…my Wii U is collecting dust…but it will definitely get some play time when Xenoblade drops!!!

        • simkenno

Yeah I have played it a few times, it sort of reminds me of the first time I played Crash Bandicoot on PS1 many years ago. My point is that theres currently more games out on WiiU and loads more great titles to come πŸ™‚
On the note of BF4 I haven’t had any problems with mine, thankfully hope you get it sorted.

          • RyuNoHadouken

sometimes i can get right into Conquest, other times im trying for like 15 minutes, then i just turn it off

          • simkenno

Ah God that’s a pain, maybe now that there the new patch, it might work ?

          • RyuNoHadouken

idk…im about to fire it up within the next 30 minutes

      • Dylan Clark

exactly. Wii U sucks pal. when it flops you will see man.
        EDIT: It already has flopped

        • Rinslowe

You were so clever with that one…

  • Donaald

Why no Tekken, Ninja Gaiden, Darksiders or Rayman Legends instead of Injustice and the mediocre ZombieU?

Edit: why all the down votes? Butthurt much?

    • RyuNoHadouken

if you think ZombiU is mediocre, then thats probably because you sucked at it

      • Rinslowe

        What is wrong with you?

        • NintenScience

          @ryunohadouken:disqus is a no-life troll.

          • Rot is op, racist.

          • Je bent zelf een aap idioot Ga niet nederlands praten, sukkel straks eet een olifant je op

      • Donaald

        Your mom sucks at it.

  • simkenno

Very enjoyable read right here πŸ™‚
Pikmin 3 has such great replay value as-well as a fun story with new added DLC. Im definitely going to pick Deus Ex up soon, and although I have super Mario 3d world now I cant wait till Christmas morning when I can rip the packaging open and play it all day πŸ˜€
For anyone trying to convince a friend or family member to buy a Wii U definitely show them this, I know ill be passing this guide onto all my non Wii U owner friends πŸ™‚
On a side note, Im actually gasping at how much im dying for the New Smash Bros and Mario kart. Also X is certainly a day one purchase for me πŸ™‚

    • Rinslowe

X is going to have me counting the sleeps like is was a child again when that release date drops, lol…

  • Mithiragi
    • Huh, thanks! I’ll pass this on to my editors!

  • Nothing5555

just saw the WiiU basic Skylanders swapforce bundle for 249 (after 50 instant rebate) at Frys electronics.

  • IvΓ‘n Enrique Garcerant Tafur

What! No spotlight for Sonic Lost World here?

  • alex toschi

Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate! Such an underrated title, to me it seems like such a western appealing game as far as the so called “hardcore” gamer would enjoy. Especially with the online. Either way I love it, I sold my last copy and decided to pick it up again for christmas I wanted to play it again.

  • Scott Duperree

Great guide, very helpful. It helps get a sense of some of the better less advertised games on the system. I was surprised you didn’t feature Wind Waker HD as it came out in October and is a holiday push from Nintendo (and a remake of one of the best nintendo games ever). I was happy you featured ZombiU, Monster Hunters 3, and Deus Ex.

  • Skelterz

Biggg News! i was just checking out an online catalogue for a company called woolworths they used to be massive in the uk for anyone who’s british you should recognise the company anyway i think they may have made a big blunder by letting the mario kart 8 release date slip check out this link, my thoughts are if this correct that nintendo are planning every two months to release a AAA game in 2014, donkey kong comes in feb kart come in april, smash bros in june?? only time will tell happy gaming.

    • Peter Lythaby

      Roll on April

  • Arthur Jarret

I came here to complain about the lack of monster hunter and wonderful 101 – only to find out that these have been included on the list…

    Well played, Colin… well played.

  • Matt

If anyone is still thinking on the Wii u, Chapters stores in Canada have the Zelda bundle for 210$

  • Random12multi

Look at alll the games :D.. I can’t afford
