A group of hackers called Wii U Hax has claimed to have discovered an exploit in the Wii U that will enable homebrew apps. According to the team, the exploit can be found in the Wii Mode of the system, which can then be used to access the Wii U hardware. The team says the exploit can’t be patched by Nintendo through updates, as many exploits were in the era of the original Wii. There’s currently no code being released at the moment and this isn’t unlike the same claims made by the fail0verfl0w group a few months ago. local_offer Nintendo wii u wii u hack wii u hacks stars Further Reading F-Zero X gets updated on Wii U to fix control New Zelda Breath of the Wild trailer and game Super Mario Maker Wii U vs 3DS comparison (vi Get Ocarina of Time on 3DS for only $14 New teaser site for Zelda: Breath of the Wild released How to track NES Classic Mini stock in time for Christmas Adam Fox Yes, I know this will lead to piracy….but it could also lead to some one of a kind home-brew too…..:) Lusunup Oh boy… not now… mar laguna Maybe we will see the wii u backup game in 1 more year it’s still to soon for it jjbredesen I know a lot of you will be angry about this, but it’s great i love homebrew, not because of the piracy, but because of all the nifty stuff it let’s you do, haters gonna hate. This will lead to stuff like Region Free homebrews etc. And who does not want that? Shota kinda scared about the online cheaters 🙁 Skelterz I Fear Nothing. jjbredesen Yeah, thats always a problem, but Nintendo can make there servers cheat proof, not the greatest problem, the bigger problems are giving hacker the tools they need to hack e-shop etc, that can cause a lot more problems. SolarGalaxa There won’t be cheaters on Wii U. Why? Because you need direct access to the active RAM to produce codes. (USB Gecko on the Wii provided that). Now, seeing as how there isn’t any GC Memory card slots, it’s impossible. peeer Now explain me how the Xbox 360 and PS3 got cheats for games and it don’t have any USB Gecko… 😛 Piracy always bring cheaters, its innevitable. Because its giving them direct access to everything in the console *ESPECIALLY* the RAM. How could they run homebrew in the first hand if they did not have access to the ram? Also, you can even modify your games with piracy. Just look at all the modified New Super Mario Bros Wii and Mario Kart Wii games on the internet. So, if you want to add aimbot like on PC its even possible. Unlikely because it requires alot of work to make and you won’t find this on internet for that reason but still possible. By the way for your information, on PS3 thats how peoples cheat. They modify the eboot.bin file directly in the games to enable cheating, you can download modified eboot files all over the internet. Just look at this link for exemple: http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=67269 SolarGalaxa Actually, modifying games on Wii you technically don’t need piracy due to Riivolution. Riivolution requires a retail disc to play the mods and thus even if you do pirate an ISO to get the files to hack, your still gonna need to buy a retail disc to use Riivolution and/or it’s own Riivolution-like channel. (Ex: The new CTGP Channel for MKWii) LOL at just waking up. peeer Yeah but that still requires to “hack” the Wii in order to run/install Riivolution or your CTGP channel. Piracy is the result that comes from hacking and modifying games is the result that comes from piracy and hacking. You don’t have to rely to piracy to run these mods/patches with Riivolution but without piracy in the first hand you probably wouldn’t have got a Riivolution homebrew app to begin with. I mean, without the ability to dump the games to hard drive you can’t figure out how to make these mods if you don’t have the files for the game. The main reason to create dumping tools for games is piracy. By the way, there is another homebrew like that where the creator of the homebrew made it so you need to have an original disk in order for it to work. Its an USB/SD loader for gamecube games on Wii called Devolution. Here: http://gbatemp.net/threads/using-devolution-to-play-gamecube-games-on-a-family-wii-or-a-wiiu.350927/ Skelterz What sort of stuff can you do with the homebrew software and how would you load it on your wii u via usb? Capt. Smoker sd card is the popular choice and a copy of lego indiana or smash brothers, I used to play music on my wii, something it couldn’t do without homebrew Skelterz yeah but that’s all sorta not worth doing to me i mean is there anything really worth doing it over? Capt. Smoker Who knows, with the Wii U possibly, it could improve a lot of things, maybe even add ext keyboard mouse support, various plug ins, different browsers, better emulators, it’s up to whoever decides to develop for it Dallas Gooch I thought a recent update allowed external keyboards and mice? Capt. Smoker I don’t think so, Wii has it, tried everything on Wii U with no luck jjbredesen Yup, it’s worth it, you could compare it to jailbraking an IOS device, it can’t really do that much, but once you jailbrake it, it can do almost as much as an Android device, depending on what is developed you can do almost anything you want! -More emulators -Flash and other plugins for browser -Home menu changes (launcher) -New applicatons, that can really do anything you want! -Watch DVD’s on Wii U (yes it is possible) -Remove region lock -Game mods -create your own software (open source) -link gamepad to other sources? -Flash other OS’s (not really that good future but it’s possible) and loads more, depends on what you want, and it will allow you to use a ton of stuff such as keyboard and anything you can plug in to USB, perhaps even Oculus Rift? Inferno Uprising ONe of the main things that you can do would have custom tracks on Mario Kart Wii. There are over 150 tracks and I have even created some for the game Here is a link to a list of all of the tracks. I can’t wait for it to release on Wii U because i want to play custom tracks on it. http://wiki.tockdom.com/wiki/CTGP_Revolution Saul Rivera It’s great for the emulator and apps…I used a lot WiiMC I think it was called on my Wii’s Homebrewed console Magnus Eriksson But its great to play free games and free VC 🙂 jjbredesen Yup, don’t support piracy, but VC games are so old, i don’t think it matters, can’t wait to download them 🙂 Magnus Eriksson i do support piracy. 🙂 jjbredesen I only support it when i am doing it XD DarkYoshi I love how in the end you actually admitted that you support piracy. Arr matey, you have a fellow pirate 😉 jjbredesen To be honest, i have pirated/cracked games for a estimate value of 300.000 dollars XD, i also have unlimited money on the google play store, if i want to buy something in a game, google pays for me XD, a russian hacker has given me access to all the money i want, so say if i play a game where you can use real life money to get premium futures i use the hack, and i don’t pay anything 😉 One of the greater pirates out there 😛 DarkYoshi I know Freedom for free in app purchases. I used Android before 😉 jjbredesen Well played, so i guess your a root guy? What rom do you use? DarkYoshi I wrote *used*, I’m on iOS atm, but when I was using Android, I was a big fan of the P.A.C ROM for the Xperia Z Daniel Gonzalez I support it up to a point. Free VC games I do agree with. 😛 linkzero65 Well you know games are getting expensive now and then sometimes you gotta make hard choices when choosing games cuz of limited budget i only pirate when its like REALLY REALLY necessary. sd If people get free VC games then that’s almost all of Nintendo’s staff with nothing to do. After all its not like Nintendo are putting in much work on games other those coming out on the VC. SolarGalaxa Have you also seen Wire3D? It’s an awesome little game engine that lets you create games and even has an Unity3D export add-in. (Unity3D is that simple to use 3D game creator, now with easier 2D).. Rocky Math New researcher proves Wii u is POWERFUL http://www.cinemablend.com/m/games/Wii-U-Memory-Bandwidth-GPU-More-Powerful-Than-We-Thought-62437.html Daniel Gonzalez Not so sure I believe that story. Just for the sake that it is true, it isn’t helping Nintendo gather third party. Christian Schoff Wrong. Something in Nintendo turned them off. Daniel Gonzalez Like how they treat third parties as peasants? You might have something there. Rinslowe They may have burnt a lot of bridges on their road to the present. But saying that they treated third parties like “peasants” is completely unfounded and nothing more than hearsay… Christian Schoff What Rinslowe said. I’m too sleepy to argue with a Nintenhater. Rinslowe It wasn’t the hardware. EA has a lot of influence and support with many studios and with the creators of the most dominant next gen game engines… What is happening to Nintendo is due to their handling of third parties in the past. BUT, it most certainly is heightened and amplified by “sour grapes” as you regularly put it, which started with EA and their failed proposal to put Origin on Wii U. That is what really kicked off this whole western anti Nintendo propaganda within EA’s ranks which by design or otherwise trickled down to their various studios, then the media, then analysts etc… And both Sony and MS have done their fair share of sly marketing tactics to top it off… Not about the hardware… sd Im pretty sure that it was poor hardware sales that turned third party developers off. Decker Shado Nice to see some numbers really crunched for the thing. Of course, on page 2 where they start talking about pumping more watts into the GPGPU as a quick and easy way to get tons more power out.. ehh… don’t think that there’s a secret liquid cooler hiding in my Wii U to keep the thing from bursting into flames in that scenario. Still, a nice read. Christian Schoff I laughed at the imagery of it bursting into flames. I feel bad now. Rich Garriques wii u’s not weak at all , its just the media thats portraying nintendos new console as a failure. matthew garcia It is powerful but nintendo has a problem showing it with sidescrollers and cartoon graphics while ps4 is gonna be showing games with extreme detail like actually showing off the hardware. Wii u still lags behind ps4 and it will show 2 years down the road. Technically wii u isnt future proof Swampert Master This situation is both good and bad. It can lead to piracy of games, but also allows for homebrew which could allow some nifty functions. Jon about time…. Xbone and PS4 have already been hacked… lol ejownz6 Nintendo should make sure to ban consoles that are running homebrew from their network services. This not only protects online gaming environments but discourages users from modding their console since they’ll lose access to online multiplayer and eshop downloads. Capt. Smoker It also sends out a message that they have complete control over everything and you have no control over your own console, Nintendo can eat shit, I’ll do whatever I want with my console once it’s out of there hands and into mine, I payed for it after all. Bobby P. You can do as you wish with your console but if you think you’re entitled to cheat on active online servers then that speaks of your character. I don’t need cheaters fucking up MK8 online or smash bros. Capt. Smoker I never said I would cheat on anything, never even mentioned any of that online crap, don’t put words in my mouth Lenny L Boogie Harris Didn’t you JUST hear, it’s for the Wii mode? Calm down fool! Bobby P. Ok so i got a little caried away. I just dont like cheaters or piracy. I didnt mean it personally against anyone. Im calm. Ieuan Darknell It only works on the Wii bit of the Wii U, so there’s honestly no need to worry at all! 🙂 Luciano Brace yourselves, bricked Wii U consoles posts are coming… (And they’ll deserve something like this or worse) DarkYoshi I feel homebrewing and jailbreaking always lead to a better future for a console. I like to tinker with stuff, and homebrew is perfect for that! Who knows, piracy might even help Nintendo in their situation.. So I’m in for Wii U homebrew, if you’re not then I understand you want a clean console experience Luciano First, sorry for the delay of reply. Second, ask PlayStation 2 devs if they liked the *unblocked games* that the customers were playing through they PS2 life,I’m certainly that the answer it’s not the best… Thirdly, everybody already have PC/Laptops/Blu-Rays/Netflix to watch wherever they want to,so in this case your argument is invalid. Ony The only thing the Wii U (and consoles in general) lacks of is to be able to develop games freely, without need of a dev kit. While I say that, I really don’t like piracy so if someone hack a console just to play games without paying for them: booooooo D: Sonic the Hedgehog Yeah, it’s the ultimate nightmare for developers. Speaking of developers, how’re you doing? Made any game yet? Ony I’m still a student (5 month left!), and I erm, never really achieved to finish a game. Yet! But hoping to be one of the indie studios that publish on the Wii U in the next years <3 Sonic the Hedgehog Can’t wait! Then again, I never could… Capt. Smoker I used to use my Wii for various emulators, homebrew was a wonderful thing for that, I’ve been using my OUYA for it recently, but if this exploit can get emulators for ps2,psp, ds etc running, then I don’t see a problem, as for piracy, who cares?, not like used game sales make Nintendo or the 3rd party devs any money anyway, I hope it doesn’t go that way mind but it shouldn’t be the deciding factor on wether or not Wii Ubrew is useful or not, imagine the apps they could possibly add that may come in handy?, since Nintendo are too lazy to do anything, it’ll be nice if somebody else could have a crack at it Joe Fraley What kinds of things can you do with home brew, besides pirate games? Someone said develop games? I mean, how useful are home brews on other consoles? Can some one give some examples of stellar added functions that really improved their console experience? I’ve never used one – I don’t know why I should be interested in this. Capt. Smoker I used my Wii homebrew for -music -videos -photos -emulators That was about it, good though, I imagine the possibility of something far greater will be on it’s way now J_Joestar wouldn’t emulators kinda lean towards the Piracy he was talking about? Capt. Smoker I think downloading games for a system and a game that doesn’t sell anymore can be given a pass, certainly better than the rip off that vc games are right now, you can pay £5.50 for a snes game if you want, not for me though. Adam Howell £5.50 seems a fair price for a good snes game. I think over decade of the easy snes piracy, through emulators, has unfairly lowered the value of the games in peoples eyes. Few would expect a music album or a movie from the early 90’s to have to sell for less than £5.50. Of course, it’s far more time consuming to download a folder containing of every music album ever made or every movie ever made. You can get every snes game ever made in minutes. Capt. Smoker Considering I can buy a ps1 and 2 game for less than £4 on the ps store on ps3, I respectfully have to disagree and would think they could sell better with a cheaper price point Adam Howell Would things sell more if they were cheaper? Of course. Does it mean they aren’t worth that price? Is a game like ALTTP not worth £5.50? I’d pay many times that for many snes games if piracy wasn’t an option. I think many PS1 games are worth more than £4 as well though many early 3d games can seem more dated than many snes era 2d games. Magnus Eriksson Worth 4-5 $ Capt. Smoker If they localized some old games we never got, I definitely would, just nof too keen on spending that much for an old game Dominicruz wow this is great news .now finally we can do something with our wii U .this will boost wii u sells and wii can do a lot .A lot of my friends will be happy . Joey Bad news….. Magnus Eriksson This is great news for all of us who doesnt want to support Nintendo anymore. Bye bye buying Mario Kart 8 and Smash! Hello Free games! Joey That’s bad news i hate hacker’s and i am not gonna hack my Wii U sad world. NkoSekirei agreed but i wouldnt take this article very seriously i mean they made so many claims in the past but nothing ever happens so nothing to worry about man linkzero65 yeah! just like FailOverFlow. Daniel Gonzalez Hello free games indeed. ScrewAttack As long as MK8 and Smash don’t turn into a cheaters circus, go nuts. Like someone mentioned below, if this results in extra tracks for 8 then I’ll be interested. SolarGalaxa My guess is Smash Stack comes to the rescue again 🙂 NkoSekirei i call bs on this seriously they make so many claims and ends up not happening or not even true and besides the only thing they could possibly hack is the gamepad and not main system it self. Christian Schoff While I support Homebrew I do not support free games. linkzero65 OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Rinslowe I’m not against “Homebrew” in any way. Actually someone with the patience to possibly allow customisation to the Home Menu/ s would be welcome. But here in China the Wii was used more for pirated games which you could buy for less than $1 USD each and saved to external hard drive… Just like the old NES cartridges in a way… I’m not down for that type of thing in today’s Nintendo situation, so no thanks if that’s all it ends up being. But if the only exploit is within Wii mode, then you’d have to disable updates. Wii U doesn’t have 1:1 Wii components inside “apparently”, so yeah Nintendo would be in a better position to just patch and fix – so to speak. Steve The manufactures of consoles “NEED” to keep homebrew out of their systems. People would just play downloaded games and never buy games in the stores anymore which would cause a pretty fast chain reaction of sales dropping and then companies will lose money that could be spent on developing quality games. It kills me when people fight for the right to put homebrew in their systems like its a right. Very few people want it for actual free homebrews but the majority want free games and don’t care about the consequences. DELFIN Go hell all the hackers group Wii U Hax, hack the wii u with exploit homebrew and piracy games are ILLEGALLY!! my god Wii U will die like the Dreamcast. Nintendo please send a message about it to FBI to arrest them and jails for the rest of life.
