The Wii U supports full game downloads — anything from retail games to indie titles can be downloaded on the Wii U eShop. Obviously, full retail games will take up a lot more space than indie titles. We got a list of the Wii U games available for download, and how much space they take up. Remember, the Wii U Basic set only has about 3 GB left for game downloads, while the Deluxe version has 25 GB free space for games and media. You can of course store your games and downloads on external drives.

You can find the full breakdown below. What’s interesting to see is that the indie title Trine 2 actually takes up more space than New Super Mario Bros U.

Wii U Indie games

  • Nano Assault Neo: 81 MB
  • Chasing Aurora: 103 MB
  • Little Inferno: 114 MB
  • Mighty Switch Force HD: 525 MB
  • Trine 2: 1941 MB

  • Wow check out those last 4! Someone with a Wii U basic could get all 4 lol

  • Mickey Mouse

Glad I got a 2TB usb drive, cause I’m gonna need it.

    • Fred

What kind did you get? How is it working for you? I ask because As you can read above, I need one to download the 24GB NBA 2k13

  • Nintedward-3DS-WiiU

How many discs does AC3 have on the xbox 360 ?

The possibilities are limitless for Nintendo With Multi layer discs and HDD’s….

    • Stephen Vanpelt

it is 2 discs for 360 considering that it only can be dual layered which makes the 360 disc 8gb while the game itself is 17gb (dumbed down on 360 to fit 2 disc instead of having a third just for 1 gb)

      • Nintedward-3DS-WiiU

kk. I knew this game was technically impressive!!!!

      • xdlugia

        Dumbed down? Nope!
It’s more like the updates + the extra content for the Wii U which adds for an extra GB.
The game is the same size on both PS3 and Xbox 360.

        • Don’t forget that the cut scenes are not compressed on the Wii U.

        • 360 games, at least newer 360 games are stored on an enhanced DVD format that can store up to 10GB of data each making the 2 discs Assassin’s Creed III comes on more than enough.

  • GameChemist

Wow, Nintendoland is almost twice as big as NSMBU? Hopefully I’ll be getting the Deluxe so that it doesn’t have to be stored on the Wii U memory; definitely getting NSMBU though.

  • They finally patched sonic and all stars racing! No more glitches

  • Adrian Meredith

So do these games run straight off of the external harddrive?

DAMN!!!!!….talking about memory space for downloadable games

  • Master RD

Glad I got a deluxe, though I doubt I’ll get Wii U games digitally unless I really want it. So I should be good.

  • LordiMcKill

I’ve always been more of a fan of disc based games compared digital downloads but the options are great none the less. Although the way things are going in terms of file sizes (Tekken Tag 2 is roughly around the same size as Assassins Creed 3 although its not mentioned oddly enough in the list), I can see Nintendo releasing larger storage models of the Wii U in the near future.

  • Fred

This article gets an incomplete. I just tried to download NBA 2k13, but it wouldn’t let me because I only had 23GB of free space on my Wii U Deluxe and 23GB wasn’t enough for NBA2k13 which the eshop told me is 24GB. I guess I’ll be buying an external hard drive tomorrow.

  • I expect nintendo to release it’s own external nintendo branded storage device at a competitive price. I think it’d be nice to make one that matches the Wii U console with matching led lights and preferably solid state of a decent size. I think this is nintendo’s only option to add more storage space because the onboard memory chips are quite expensive when you get up into memory chips of 32 gig each where as the deluxe wii u has 4 chips of 8 gig each.
