The Wii U will use a proprietary disc format that offers up to 25 GB of storage on a single disc. It was previously rumored that it was based on Blu-ray, but now it appears that the disc format is a brand new creation by Nintendo. Tech outfit Engadget noticed something interesting about the discs: they have rounded edges. This is the first time a commercial disc ships with rounded edges. They even say that the Wii U disc “feels different than any other disc we’ve handled before”. Check out the full gallery below for some closeup shots of the Wii U game discs.

And uh . . . no need to say yr 1st cuz every1 just thumbs u down.

        • Just Another Cog

Can someone please translate that sentence for me?

          • Michael

I believe what he was trying to say was, “Yes, it is cool how Nintendo invented [rounded edged discs]. It’s only a matter of time [before] Sony [and other companies in the industry] steal [the idea].”

            Here’s where it gets tricky.

“And uh… [there is] no need to say [that you are the] first [to comment because everyone] just thumbs you down [if you do that].

          • Morley94

Did you use google translator? That was a very accurate translation, well put 🙂

        nope your number 50

      • HyrulianUtopia

Who cares, and you are not.

        • jon

how does rounded disc benefit the wii u? i would rather prefer it to be blu ray based.

          • 0soul

Idk I like how they are doing their own.

      • Nintendude

I think someone is a bit upset that they weren’t first…

      • Josh

Well, everyone has his 15 minutes of glory. Sarcasm aside, here’s thumbs down.

      • Nintendo Gamer

Nobody gives a crap who’s first

      • Destructonation

Wheres the troll patrol when you need it?

We don’t need you around here!

      • Captain Potato

Now that you’re done patting yourself on the back, change your diaper ’cause you stink!

      • ridley vs. samus

how can you possibly be first when you are replying to someone else’s comment?

        • Michael

Not saying that I enjoy firstfags, but it was his comment. You are a dumbass.

          • Madmagican

Actually, there was the first comment poster and then a sorry excuse for a human being came along and posted a douchebag comment under the same screen name simply because they can’t accept the fact that they weren’t “first”

      • ninjabake

        Grow up kid.

      • Grodus

        Um… Blue shell.

      • Dr. Device

Wow, I think you set the all time record for number of dislikes..

      • TheBoldman67

It’s funny how he says he’s first even though his comment was a REPLY to another comment.

    • MasterPpv

Being a Nintendo product, I’d be prepared to bet that you probably could play Frisbee with these discs and they’d probably still play just fine afterward.

      • staeilin

Being a Nintendo product I’m sure you could tie it to s stick, chop down a tree with it and it would STILL work just fine afterwards.

        • Comment

You can even put toast covered in Marmite in a Wii and it’ll play it just fine (this is a fact).

    • Nko Sekirei

and use them on trolls that like to talk smack about the wii u

      • fedster

u guys are idiots. obviously he knows he’s not first, he freaking did in it as a reply to another existing post

  • Ryu No Hadouken

so, whats the good thing about this?

    • Destructonation

No more disks that scratch you all the time, thats what is different.

      • Nintedward

Wait a minute , you mean the discs are round ?

        O GOOD LORD , SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Nintedward

I’m not downplaying this news :P. It’s cool how the edge of the disc is smooth, rounded and unique! The Rounder the better (giggity , giggity goo!)

          • Nintendo is da best

      • HyrulianUtopia

But they still GET scratched. huh?

        • Jeffery02

Yeah, but now the edges aren’t gonna be as easily nicked and cracked too.

      • Lusunup

hmm… how on earth do you get scratched by a disc? am i the only one that doesn’t gets scratched by discs?

        • Michael

Never in my life has a disc scratched me. Not from the first time I’ve ever held a disc.

      • Gigagator

Actually, there’s probably more to this idea than just aesthetics. It’s possibly to aid in disc balancing or something. I imagine it’s easier to create a perfectly balanced disc if you’ve rounded off the edges.

The benefit of a perfectly balanced disc? Doesn’t vibrate and make irritating noises when it’s spinning in the console. So my bet is acoustics have something to do with it.

Also, I would bet these discs are single layer? It’s easier to create a rounded edge on a single layer disc than a double layer.

    • Ryu No Hadouken

Give me a break, put nintendo on a turd and all you nintendo fanboys will buy it. Xbox is the future.. Sry to burst your bubble!!!

      • Ryu No Hadouken

i see you jacked my username…you have brought shame to the temple and will soon meet your fate. Round 1: FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • [000]

Did you ever wonder why Nintendo ISN’T on a turd, or why it NEVER will be? Obviously, you only find the Nintendo logo on quality products. Maybe THAT’S why Nintendo fans buy things with the Nintendo brand.

        • zonda777

I wonder if Apple fans would buy a turd with Retina Display…

      • Gamer

        XBOX720 = RROD 2 lol.

      • Axe

Nintendo has already been put on a turd and we didn’t fall for it. It was called the virtual boy. Give me a quality product that I want and I’ll buy it despite the brand.

      • Nko Sekirei

maybe ur gonna get ur @$$ kicked by everyone here troll gtfo microsoft troll

      • Man

Um, are you high? I guess so. You think Microsoft can create a console that can beat Nintendo despite the fact that the Xbox 360 that they made had a plethora of hardware problems, such as hardware failure (more frequent than any other main seventh generation console), disk scratching etc? Wow.

    • Kahhhhyle

Well nothing that we know of… Maybe it’s just for multi layered discs? News is slow bro the thing is almost launched

      • Nintendonoob

Nah… Apple fans buy $2,000 dollar laptops just to say “Hey! I got an Apple!” what they are gonna see from me is a GamePad through their skull

    • What?

They’re quite nice to touch. I have the Scribblenauts Unlimited disc in my hands right now.

  • NintendoMan :D

    Uh cool I guess?

  • Gmanjudo

    Actually, HDDVDs had rounded edges.

    • Elite

I forgot about the blue-ray/HDDVD war back in the day.

      • The Island Of Misfit Toys

We must never forget. For those who have been forgotten end up in one place….

        The Island.

        • Damiao

Loll. You so funny *in Japanese fob accent*

      • revolution5268

        blue-ray/HDDVD war????

  • Michael Jackson

Read about this in a Wii U preview article. It’s certainly…interesting?

    • Nintendonoob

OHMAIGAWD! MJ! YOUR STILL ALIVE!? I got one request from you… Sing this in front of Bill Gates and that dude who made Sony… *to the tune of Beat It* You know you’ll never beat Nintendo. You should just leave and better go home. If you wanna get PWNED and you wanna get SCREWED just stay here. AND LOSE TO NINTENDO just leave it! Leave it! Leave it! Leave it! Your stupid consoles never won! If you just stay here and make that shit. Then you will get raped and get shitted By Nintendo! Nintendo! Nintendo! Nintendo! Nintendo!

Thank you for listening to my new song “Leave it” HOPE YOU LIKED IT!

      • Jetty

Make sure you have Eddie rip the solos.

        • mojojojo888

And Tido bring you some tissues…

      • Nintendonoob

Looks like 6+ people hate my creativity -_-“

        • Nintedward

It was possibly the greatest comment of all time. I even sung it in MJ’s voice in my head XD!

          • Nintendonoob

            :3 I feel special

          • Zeldatrek fc 3780-9021-0732

Weird Al was singing it in my head. And he’s still alive!

      • What?

Weird. It seemed to fit Billy Jean better in my Head. :/

    • ssb4 3dsFC3007 8585 6950

  • NintendoMan :D

    I hope im first!!

    • Nintendude

      • HyrulianUtopia

        Not exactly…

    • NintendoMan :D

      • HyrulianUtopia

        Now you sound like Kingtendo.

      • Person

        You failed at saving yourself.

    • The Island Of Misfit Toys

You are first. First to be cast off into the darkest cave this land has to offer, where you can stay hidden and eventually be forgotten.

      Welcome to the Island.

      • NintendoMan :D

        To the fake NintendoMan 😀

Only the real NintendoMan 😀 would know Nintedward’s gravitar before it was the GameCube. If you answer wrong or don’t answer, then I am the true NintendoMan :D, the one isn’t an idiot to post “I hope im first!!”. I don’t care if this recieves many downvotes, I want to get rid of this fake.

        • Nintendonoob

Hmmm *to the tune of Ghostbusters* Somethin strange, on the Wii U site… Who we gonna call? TROLL PATROL!

        • Nintendo64

          You make me sick.

          • NintendoMan :D

            Sorry guys I’m just a troll 🙂

        • cynthia

Hey you know what solves the problem? Gravater

  • King J

Gonna miss the wii homebrew 🙁

    • eli

      your a moron

      • Ninjafish

        *You’re 😉

      • HyrulianUtopia

Why? Because he is stating his opinion? I don’t know about you, but I live in a free country.

        • The Island Of Misfit Toys

A utopia is only a pipe dream, and the vast land of Hyrule is just out of reach. Unfortunately, you will never be free. You will only be satisfied with what you have become accustomed to.

          Welcome to the Island.

          • KINGTENDO

@ The Island Of Misfit Toys -WOW THAT IS SOME POWERFUL SHIT BRO.

      • LyingTuna

Why? I didnt hook up homebrew to my Wii yet, but it’s a cool channel. If I got it, I’d probably emulate old games… The ones not on Virtual Console, of course. You know, like Banjo-Kazooie and Goldeneye 007 (N64), as well as many Virtual Boy games.

    • Tobbe

Wont take long til homebrew and softmod comes to wii u. I will still buy the games i like. Keep your eyes open on youtube and look for “how to open/whats inside of a wii u

      • theorangefish

We already onow what’s inside^^. We don’t know how good the stuff is that is inside.

  • Gijojo

It’s nice to see nintendo is bringing its creativity to every part of the WII U.

    • theorangefish

What creativity are you talking about? What is so special about that? Just rounded edges nothing more nothing less.

      • Nintendonoob

You sir must have your creativity gland turned off. Here I will help you. I am gonna punch you in the face as hard as I can with my brass knuckles to turn that gland on!

        • Kahhhhyle

Well too be fair rounded discs with no apparent use isn’t what I would call creative either. But it seems odd Nintendo would do some completely new disc without some sort of reason

          • What?

            They’re for anti-pirating reasons. You’re welcome. 😀

      • Kahhhhyle

Its possible that it does have some sort of significance… Though certainly nothing apparent

      • Axe

I believe them making their own high quality discs qualifies as creative. Not just the edges.

        • Gigagator

I don’t believe Nintendo actually developed this new disc technology and it was actually outsourced to a company that has more experience in this field.

          • theorangefish

You know later GC disc also had those rounded edges and I want to see if somebody punches me in the face or not. When I read such comments I see how “smart” some people are.

  • Nintendonoob

Those disks look sexy… Wow nice Nintendo. I now made a new saying. *to the Cedar Point theme* NintendoLand, The fun and only.

  • Howdy

Probably the least interesting thing I’ve read about the Wii U. Coach Hines could use them in his rants, though – “I swear if you don’t sit down, I’ll cut you in half with a round Wii U disc, and that’s IMPOSSIBLE!”.

  • CRT_hater777

    What does rounded edges mean?

    • Nintendonoob

its where the edges of the disk are curved so if people lick the disk (not me. Seriously I just saw some peeps doing it) they wont get cut. it makes the disks safer for little kids

    • Nintedward

      Rounded egdes.

      • CRT_hater777

D: I thought all disks were rounded edges! Darrn my life is a lie

    • James

It means that Nintendo isn’t cheeping out on the disc making process. Details is what makes a good first impression to the user.

    • JumpMan

the others just stop and go straight down. these curve to the other side. result….. (pending)

    • Jeffery02

It also means that they better be careful of Apple. You know, with Apple apparently having copy rights to rounded edges.

    • LogicalDude

It means Nintendo cuts corners :P.

  • Madmagican

Okay, I can’t really figure out why non-round edges were such a problem that Nintendo decided to round the edges, but hell I ain’t complaining

  • got my pre order

    square edges will be next…

    bring on some real news!

    • Nintendonoob

Already came like…. 7 years ago. What I want to see is a Levitating console which folds up and you can take it anywhere. *Cough Cough* Super Nintendo Entertament Wii U system

  • kingbrandus111

Umm… hate to be massively nostalgic but didn’t LaserDiscs have rounded edges as well?

  • 343 H4K0R

I am really looking forward to wii u but ill have to leave my wii and all of its amazing hombres for now.

  • Ivan

The Wii U just keeps getting better and better, and it costs only 300$, with its value much higher.

  • Elite

I will have to feel it to believe it!

  • Man

I never really cared about discs but that is SEXY!

So what does this mean I mean every disc is ROUND.

  • nintenfan

cool i guess, but does it affect the properties of the discs? has Nintendo ushered in a new era of discs?

    • Kahhhhyle

Prolly not. Look at how hard it was to get blu ray going and Sony put alot of money into that. Then look at Microsoft and hd, dvd. Nintendo makes games, that’s it so we probably won’t be seeing movies or computers adopting this format… Unless Nintendo maybe wants to partner with another manufacturer who will build movie players or computer disc readers… Which seems pretty unlikely

  • Kronecker

It never ceases to amaze me what Nintendo does to prevent and discourage piracy. From cardridges with the 64 (instead of Cd’s) to gamecubes mini discs, Nintendo always surprises. I guess these discs work out for me as they carry all the data I’ll need.

    • D2K

Both systems still got hacked. At best it makes piracy less convenient. In this day and age it’s all you can really hope for with so many pirates out there. Eventually the Wii U will be hacked just like everything else.

I’m wondering if there is a charge to 3rd parties to use this format?

      • Kahhhhyle

I would really hope Nintendo doesn’t charge the Devs to use them… They want to encourage 3rd party support not alienate them more

        • D2K

From the enthusiasm of 3rd party companies I would say if they are being charged it isn’t much. Ubisoft and Activision are crawling all over each other to get as many games on the Wii U as they can. It is interesting that the two most successful 3rd party studios right now are so solidly behind the Wii U.

          That is a good sign.

          • Kahhhhyle

Yeah if Nintendo can get valve and Bethesda on board I will be a very happy camper.

    • Kahhhhyle

Aha you sir have discovered the reason why Nintendo did this. Bravo sir, I sat here and contemplated this for a while trying to figure out why. I thank you because now I can sleep tonight

  • Leeroy

  • zuxs

I’m looking at my copy of Assassins Creed III right now. Rounded edges, check. Feels different than other disks, no check. Not noticing any difference in feel. Same thinness, same color underneath. My guess is the rounded the edges so it feels better in your hand that’s all. I doubt Nintendo developed a new disk format (Panasonic maybe since they make the disk drives) its just bluray tech.

    • Nin_Stream

Its been quite awhile since their were rumors stating Nintendo was making a new disc better then blue ray that you could even download dlc right onto the game discs. This appears to have been what it was.

    • What?

I found a crazy difference between feel. So did my friends without me telling them the difference beforehand.

  • TheUNation

The Wii U GameDisc is the like a 44 magnum… the most powerful!

  • Ledreppe

You people need to get out more often!

  • Johnny

It’s official; I’m definitely buying one now.

  • Disciplelicious

I’m holding my new Assassin’s Creed 3 for the Wii U and it feels great! It’s like a mirror on the bottom side! It’s truly unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

  • D2K

Does anyone know if the Wii U discs are scratch resistant like Blu-Ray? Durabis I believe it is called.

  • Fireheart

I wonder if Nintendo will be revealing something very cool about these disks. Knowing they have 25 GB of storage for games is pretty cool as well. There must be something special about these disks that Nintendo is keeping under raps like usual until after the release. I can’t wait to hear what the reason for these disk are.

  • Captain Potato

I would like to know the benefit of having rounded edges…

  • ZeldaFreak4Life

I have two wii U games at home with me right now and to be honest, I can’t really tell the difference.. although the disk does look like a really dark grey color

  • link 5

Today I picked up my pres order for assassins creed 3 and the disk feels nice and the art on it is butiful

  • darkfox

just got AC 3 the disc is heavy compared to others and feels diff. Picked it Up at GS today!

    • Jbaeza

Me Too!! pretty nice feeling though right?

      • darkfox

        yeah its very smooth

  • Come at me bro

Now I can use it as a back scatter too

    • Chaotic567ism

  • Jbaeza

I picked up AC III for the Wii U today and when i opened the box, that’s the first thing i noticed. Goodness it feels nice in your hands! The blue case isn’t that bad either. I hope you guys can soon enjoy the feeling of the disk, and come Sunday, we will all meet once more for an online play session of some sort! I’m going for Demon*OF*Razgriz. Look me up come Sunday!

  • Sharkz

I guess my brother and can’t use them to slice N dice each other then. We will have to stick with dvd’s to do that job.

  • Johny

    cool 😀

  • Schizza

The system drops in 4 days and this is the only bit of news you can scrape up? Seriously?

    • D2K

There isn’t a whole lot of news left to report. Other than Nintendo ramping up their Nintendo Direct on a more frequent basis to tie up some loose ends here and there, not much is needed to be done.

The only thing I would like to know is if the Wii U will have some type of media center similar to what Sony and Microsoft have where you can listen to music on the Wii U, link to a PC to watch video files and or use music files during gameplay.

    • TheDavyStar

The thing is, we have all the news we need. What’s the point of having big news released only on the day of launch?

  • Ninteggedon

    wait…. arent all disks round?

  • ppp

How durable would these discs be?
Even though I never managed to scratch my blu-ray disks, seen videos that shows those dont mind a few scratches.
And how will the loading times be?
25gb disk, with no installations? Bayonetta had wicked loading times before the installation option on ps3 (though it gave nice time to practice moves).

(Before you start hating me for owning a ps3, I’ll have you know that I sold that sucker to fund my Wii U ZombiU edition)

    • olimar

Way to go! Welcome to Nintendo’s next gen! 😀

  • Yamiryuu Zero

I wouldn’t understand until I see the disc by myself…

  • Arsonist Monkey

    WII UFO!

  • NIntendude789

Wow! The first rounded game discs for a console. I wonder how it feels. o3o

  • joe

you cant tell by looking at the pics.

  • Linskarmo

I can see that they would load into the console easier, and probably wouldn’t scratch you as easily (not that I’ve been scratched by one before.) Very good.

  • Kyle

I already just received Scribblenauts Unlimited in the mail yesterday and noticed that the disk looked different than normal discs. They seem almost smooth is what I would say.

  • Josh_gold

If this was an apple invention they would say it revolutionises the way we think about discs! Lucky nintendo have their priorities straight and relise it won’t change the world. Still kind of cool though!

  • kyuubikid213

I thought the Wii U’s discs were rounded to try and stop piracy of Wii U games.

    • bizzy gie

Rounded edges feel SO much better. After using them, when you touch a regular disc, it almost hurts your hands.

  • bentendo

That is great and all, but does anybody know the difference between rounded edges and non-rounded edges?

  • Darknut

Well, they said since the beginning that the Wii U would use a new proprietary disc with 25gb capacity, someone along the way mistook the 25gb to be bluray and spread falseness on the internet. Rounded discs feel much nicer than sharp ones, obvioulsy but they are pretty rare to see, Ive never handled one personally, but from reports:
They are extremely nice. (These are the first guys that reported it btw)
