Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime recently spoke to Kotaku about the upcoming Wii U console. He touched up on several aspects of the console and its online connectivity. For example, Fils-Aime said that as soon as players turn on the Wii U, Miiverse will show up (provided users are connected online), and will show what your friends are doing, what games they are playing etc. That’s the “start screen” of the console, the first screen players will see — which is a radical departure from the start screens we see these days.

Reggie on Wii UThe start screen in Miiverse will display what your friends are up to, what games they are playing, and if you have the game, you can join in. With the new Nintendo TVii, you can also see which movies your Miiverse friends are watching, according to Reggie. To get to the menu or play a game, you simply hit the “Start” button.

Miiverse will be integrated into Wii U games (it’s optional, though). Reggie gives the example of New Super Mario Bros U, where players walk through the world map and can see messages and hints left by other players.

On the topic of Nintendo Network and the Wii U eShop online store, Reggie didn’t give any specific details, but did say, “We have spent a lot of time and invested a lot of money to get our connected experiences right”.

Finally, when it comes to Friend Codes, which is quite frankly the worst online friend system ever made, Reggie offered some hope. “We’ve heard the community feedback on friend codes and we’re making it dramatically easier for you to connect with your friend”. It’s nice to hear that they’ll make it “dramatically easier” than Friend Codes, but then again, that’s not so hard — it cannot possibly be worse than the Friend Code system we’re using today.

    • AKA-Link77

U wasted the top comment for that?

    • AKA-Link77

But anyways…when b4 FCs were announced i was praying for there not to be. U can imagine how i reacted wen Nin confirmed it. :/ 🙁
But Nin is true to their word and i –or rather: “We”– certanly hope it will be alot better than the nightmare FCs on DS and Wii. 🙂

      • Nintendonoob

they sucked you couldnt message your friends you coul onky see what they were doing and putting in the friend code took like 10 minutes… When I first used it I was like “god shoot me now”
        It sucked THAT much!!!

      • TheMaddMan

Maybe the friend code could be a shortcut to your NN account. Like they type it into a search box and it automatically comes up. So It’s not as essential to your account.

      • Nko Sekirei

their wont be fc for online games like bo2 or and future online titles except for miiverse which it requires fcs

    • SortableShel19

      What’s the matter?

  • Laud

I hope the netcode is smooth and that bandwidth limits are raised because the problem with the lag would usually happen because of the limits the console places.

  • NiNtEnDoLoVeR

When I’ll have the Wii =D I’ll give you (all the community in WiiUDaily my “friendcodes” (if they have that) 😛 but the only game I’ll have is Nintendo Land,, Because I have not enough money. D= but at christmas I’ll buy ZombieU (maybe but I WANT it.)

    • NiNtEnDoLoVeR

Oups I meant the Wii U and….I Preorder the Deluxe one

      • TheBoldman67

They SAID they’re making it DRAMATICALLY EASIER to become friends with others, that means they’re getting RID of friend codes, probably in exchange for gamer tags. Didn’t you read the article?

      • TheMaddMan

Give me five bro, I did too. Thing is, because I paid 50 bucks for express shipping and sales tax, I’m 20 bucks in the red.

        • Madmagican

At least you could pay for it; I’ve got a zero-to-none chance that I’ll get a WiiU by 2013…shame, I was really looking forward to it, but my economic situation is horrible

      • zam

who cares u can make new friends ok just shut up.

  • VX

Awesome gamer face ya got goin’ there, Reggie. 🙂

    • Nintendolol

You know that autozombie face feature thingy on zombi u that Reggie used…they shouldve made that his zombie face lol.

    • VX

I know that’s what i’ll look like when i turn on my Wii U 😀

      • Nintedward

THIS!!!!!!! this is the best comment on wiiu daily , there is going to be a million people worldwide with this face on launch day XD!!!!!

      • Grodus

        That makes 2 of us.

        • nintenfan

          3 actually.

          • revolution5268

  • dude

Off topic, sorry, but which game should i get? CoD BO:2, or Zombi U?

    • Xarret

Since CoD BO2 is due for later this year or early 2013 i suggest you ZombiU.

      • Macarony64

Cod b ops 2 is a day 1 title you would have knew that if you watched the conference

        • Xarret

I watched i blog about it but even what i saw do not convince me that cod bo2 Will be a launch title.

      • revolution5268

you know COD come in the holidays.

    • WiintendU

I like CoD but ZombieU looks awesome… I say zombieU… no wait! CoD ….oh! oh! Why not both?! 😀

      • nintenfan

not everybody is in your apparently great economic situation.

    • xdlugia

Well… both games have zombies, but I guess it depends on if you’re gonna play much singleplayer or multiplayer.

      Singleplayer = ZombiU
      Multiplayer = Black Ops 2

      • TheUNation

The Regginator loves French food. I suggest you purchase ZombiU first… and then (next month), CoD: Black Ops II.

    • elbrody

    • JumpMan

ZombiU. ’cause Call of Duty isn’t innovative in the slightest. and the online people cuss on a 2:1 ratio.

    • Yamiryuu Zero

I think you should get ZombiU. CoD is a multiplatform game, and even though they sharpen it’s controls to be fit to the new console, it’s still the very same FPS you can find anywhere: shoot the other team, complain about yours being a bunch of monkeys and hear everybody is sleeping with your mother.
ZombiU has some FPS features, but adds with exploration and the gameplay is extremely variable, and shows many of the GamePad’s capabilities with some interesting and intelligent challenges.
If you want a creative and innovative game, I recommend ZombiU, if you like FPS and the never ending shooting stuff, you should go for CoD2.

    • dude

thanks for the replies, everyone. but i think i should get BO:2, because Zombi U doesn’t have online, so it doesn’t matter if i get it now or later. And after a while it will be cheaper. while black ops 2 will get old pretty soon. I will get both of them. its just a matter of the order.

      • dude

likes for everyone! thanks for your input

      • Alienfish

Actually the guy at Gamestop told me that ZombiU was going to be a limited run, but he could be wrong. If it’s true, you might want to get a hold of a copy early since we all know BO2 is going to be on store shelves for the next few years.

    • Kahhhhyle

Zombiu uses the game pad in the best way. According to my local gamestop employee so I would recommend that but you can play cod for months so if you won’t be able to afford a game for a while I’d get that

  • Xarret

Friend codes are a nightmare. Please nintendo do it right this time. Thanks.

  • Wii Uoops!

Reggie looks fully engrossed in that picture.

  • Bob Singh

I think the system will be great.

Nothing could possibly be worse than friend codes, especially when they are 12 numbers long

    • TheMaddMan

Yeah, maybe make them less important and shorten it to four letters, so you don’t have to write it down to remember.

  • Ravyu

Reggie managed to combine 4 emotions in one face in that pic.
    Delight, fear, impressed and funny.

    • Ben

Its called a epic win if i’m correct.

  • More like gamer

Why friend codes this system sucks they should make user names only

    • Nintendude

Although I hate friend codes, they don’t make the system suck. There are still going to be many great games on the Wii U.

    • revolution5268

i wonder if it has to do with the wii u been backward comparable.

  • Here’s Why

  • Firebro

Its not friendcodes YES but is it jsut a ordinary username. like “Firebro” is online. Hopefully Reggie doesn’t mess up

  • Firebro

Its not friendcodes YES but is it jsut a ordinary username. like “Firebro” is online. Hopefully Reggie doesn’t mess up

  • Your Mom

    Does that say friend codes?

  • Kahhhhyle

Dear Nintendo. KILL FRIEND CODES THEY SUCK. Just give us a gamer tag or online ID as Sony calls it and let that be the end of it

  • derty

Word on the current rediculously strenuous friend code system…

  • DragonChi

So..Is the Miiverse the main menu? or is it it’s own thing?

    • The Detonator

it is its own thing. after you press start when you are in miiverse it goes to the main menu. most likley how it is on the wii, but improved

  • Jetty

Three words that will solve most online problems.
Nintendo aims to be more family oriented, and rightfully so. Mario Kart 7 has a great online community which showed much improvement from other online multiplayer like Strikers Charged. Nintendo is taking the online abilities somewhat more realistically, but still uses outdated methods.

Too many Nintendo titles that should have solid online multiplayer doesn’t(Starfox 64 3D, NSMB2, Metroid Prime Trilogy:Echoes Multiplayer, Nintendoland, etc. ). This is some very encouraging news. I don’t work in advertising but a sophisticated, and successful online system would lure more Sony and xbox fans.

    • Awesomeness

Nintendo Land has the nintendo network on the box art so it will have nonlinear, they just have not talked about it.

      • Awesomeness

m*online, not nonlinear, stupid auto correct.

  • Kamon

PLEASE for the love of God let Nintendo do something simple and not try to make things complicated with online friends again. I have FOUR friends on my Wii because I just didn’t feel like having to get someone’s PHONE NUMBER so that I could go through the awkward effort of friend codes.

  • Nintendo Power

That’s my face, everytime I play ZombiU……PS Nintendo made friend codes easier. That is all

  • pookie

the thing that sucks about this is when your a 30 year old kid that has no friends that have game systems and you wanna make friends on the console how do you do this ?

    • BloopbopBeepbop

      you dont

    • Grodus

You go out and find people who have a Wii U and that you like. The console can let YOU use the DVR, but wont use it by itself. Same thing here.

    • revolution5268

30 year old kid!??!? (whoa pedo)
what kind of country do you live on?

  • Enigma

All that was needed to be done with the Friend Code system to make it worthwhile was to have just one universal code and too receive notifications when someone has added you

  • NoPUNintendo

I hope that the Friend Codes will be like PSN or Gamertags. Your username will be called a Friend Code. Or something like that. If it’s just something at random, I’ll be rather disappointed.

  • somebody

id like to play a online game with reggie

  • Alienfish

Awesome. Miiverse sounds great. On the topic of friend codes, I think the fact that they still technically will exist on the WiiU is going to be moot. My psn account name is essentially my friend code and if I can use my Nintendo Network name to make friends, then the friend code becomes something the system cares about and not me.

  • Zhenya

lol off topic question : are fanboys still at rage for bayonetta being an exclusive? XD

  • Super sonico and hatsune miku

Wii: y u no connect wii u:get connected lol!!

  • TopCat

In that picture, Reggie looks constipated haha.

I don’t see what the problem is with friend codes… they work fine for me.

  • Wii U Gamer#19

Man, Miiverse is gonna be one heck of a system!

also is Miiverse the Wii U Menu as the Wii menu is the Wii?
    or just a seperate thing?

  • Wii U Gamer#19

Cuz, that’s the one question i’d like to know.

  • Zero

I think tey’re getting it better. Slowly, but I really like that my 3ds has a universal friend code for all of my games. The only feature that might be nice would be asking people to be your friends after a match, and if they accept, poof, you’r friends without the need of exchanging anything.

Anyways, I’m more of a single player so I really don’t mind. Anyways it’s a really nice explosion of news here since September 18, that’s nice. Thanks WiiU daily, if it weren,t for you, I don’t think i could’ve managed to preorder at Toys r Us!

  • lool

friend codes are only fine if the other person gets a notification that you added him or have add him options in games….

  • Nintendude

Maybe what they mean by friend codes, they mean something like Gamertags? Meh, I dunno.

  • Grodus

    “It cannot POSSIBLE be worse”
A typo in a WiiU Dauly article.
Anyway,JustHOW much easier can they make it. All I can think of is decreasing the# of digts, but then there wouldn’t be enough freind codes to go ’round. Cant wait to see what they can possibly do.

    • Grodus

Sorry about the missing spaces, broken spacebar.

      • Me

“A typo in a WiiU DAULY article.”
A typo in a Wii U Daily comment.

  • SteampunkJedi

I don’t have any “friends” on the Wii or 3DS because it’s almost impossible to get them. I just hope they make the friend-getting process a lot easier for the Wii U. They could allow you to make a username instead of using a friend code.
That’s my only concern for Miiverse, which otherwise looks great. Hopefully my limited Internet will work with it.

  • samuDC

I hope the friend code system will be optional, that would be great.

  • The Detonator

am i the only one worried by this. why cant they just say friend codes are gone. they keep saying they are better. that seems to mean that they are still here. nintendo just say we have one username please.

    • Me

Get out of here, Sony Lover Boy.

    • SortableShelf19

What’s wrong SONY LOVER BOY? Speachless?

  • Madmagican

So… connectivity’s not gonna be an issue, but is there gonna be a way to block friends from joining randomly or is this an issue I’m gonna have to deal with? I really do look forward to what’s gonna go down with the Wii U though

    • SteampunkJedi

I think you would get friend requests like Facebook because it just makes sense, and I wouldn’t want a bunch of creepy people to automatically become my friends. I’m hoping that FCs are just for further clarification if you want it once you’re friends and nothing more.

  • Andrew Sheehan

When you turn your Nintendo Wii U on and go to settings, there will be a ‘My System ID’. Your Wii U will come with a randomized combination of two words. For instance: CarScrewdriver. You will have to still trade both users system ID, but it will be words, instead of 12 digits. FML!

    • jcb411abuser

so wait, you system will have an id, which will become your username/gamertag? so all that’s different is that it’s not a custom name like xbox live? why can’t they just let you set up your own account? jesus all nintendo have to do is follow what microsoft and sony usually do and copy the competition, just copy xbox live that’s all they need to do.

  • xxNin-twin-doxx

Okay so now i know miiverse isn’t the home menu

  • alex
