Mass Effect 3 Wii U edition box artBy now we know that the Wii U is pretty powerful — it’s got a multi-core CPU, a modern GPU, and 2 GB of RAM. But specs are are just that: they’re specs on paper. It’s a whole other thing when it comes to developers and taking advantage of those specs.

Developer Straight Right, who is handling the Mass Effect 3 Wii U port, says that the Wii U is easy to develop for and that the hardware is powerful and versatile. In a recent interview regarding the new console from Nintendo, Straight Right CEO Tom Crago said:

“We’ve really enjoyed working on the Wii U. It’s a powerful, versatile machine and fairly painless to code for. From an architecture standpoint it’s straightforward and really just allows developers to get down to the business of making games.”

He added that they feel the Mass Effect Wii U version “plays faster” because of the GamePad, and he also confirmed that the game will natively run in 720p, but will be hardware upscaled to 1080p.

For more, check out the Mass Effect 3 gameplay video, and some screenshots as well. Mass Effect 3 will be a Wii U launch title on November 18.

“Hello? Yes, I would like to change my college major to game designing. Is Nintendo available?”

    • Nko Sekirei

the developers have been right all along wii u is 50 percent more powerful then ps3 and 360 and it seems the wii u continues to get more support from some big third party developers keep it up nintendo wii u will be the most dominate machine for end of this year and next year with huge lineup of good games

      • Nintendonoob

Wow. Every good comment got a thumbs down. There are two explanations for this… 1: Alot of people have sausage fingers or 2: The Sony fanboys and the Microsoft softies are here. Yep the fanboys are here.

        • Nko Sekirei

the only reason why the sony and microsoft fanboys thumbdown most of our good posts is that their dam scared of the wii u putting ps3 and 360 into their graves if their so worried so much they need to go bang a cactus and stop fking thumbing down every comment we post on here and just stop trolling

        • Mark Emmanuel Thom

      • Derp

I’m doubting the Wii U is only 50% more powerful. My guess is around 200 – 300% more; it is taking on 1080p @ 60 frames per second, while current consoles struggle with resolutions upscaled to 720p @ 30 frames per second. Not only that, there are some graphical features shown in the bird demo ( not the big screen demo, the floor demo, there are differences in what Nintendo showed on the big screen and what they shown on the floor ) that I have yet to see on current consoles like indirect lighting and translucent materials.

        • D2K

It was said that the Japanese Garden Demo and Zelda HD demo simply could not run on the PS3 and 360. And both those demos were just developers kicking around ideas and put together in a few weeks.

The whole Wii U being 50% more powerful idea is just another one of the rumors that came from the infamous “anonymous sources” bin. Totally unsubstantiated. Using more modern technology by the default the Wii U should be many times more powerful than the current-gen without even trying.

I still keep going back to what VP of Epic Games Mark Rein said about Zelda HD. He said that Epic developers could do even more with that with Unreal Engine 3 yet. Keep in mind that the Zelda HD demo could NOT run on the PS3 or 360. It’s even powerful enough to run Unreal Engine 4 which Mark Rein also confirmed.

Plus, the Wii U runs CryEngine 3 like a breeze and there are already games in development that use CryEngine 3. There are some that say CryEngine is at least as powerful as UE4, if not more so.

At the end of the day the Wii U will be a game-changer and an industry saver.

      • Sharlo Galmo

50 % stronger???? no way it ‘s 50% stronger, the wii u got 4times more ram against 512mb. and got newer cpu and gpgpu,it ‘s more like 200% stronger dude!.

        • brain

yea… and you know nothing about computer architecture… such a stupid comment

        • Nko Sekirei

thats wat the third party developer said so far from their comments im only saying wat they said about it in past articles on other game sites

        • Nitesh

Every modern shader architecture GPU is GPGPU capable, GPGPU isn’t a “thing” inside the Wii U. And only 1GB of that RAM is available to games, so double the shared memory of the 360 minus a bit for the 360s OS (only 45mb or so), PS3 is a bit different with split dedicated memory.

    • GameOver

      Blah blah BLAH.

I wonder if Mass Effect Wii U version runs in true 1080p at 60 fps.

      • smallNdeadly

No the article said 720 upscaled so not true 1080

        • GameOver

          Damn, that is Wiik.

          How about the frame rate?

EA should release the whole collection not only the third game.
They are making a collection for the PS3, 360 and PC. They are developing ME1 for the PS3!!!

          • Chris

I can see you are both a Sony fanboy and a PC elitus, what? are you scared because you know that the Wii U is more powerful and that Mass Effect 3 for Wii U is actually a launch title that can do true 720p and 1080p?

  • eyesac

    Good news is good news

    • Nintedward .

Excellent news 🙂 . Hopefully they were able to up the frame rate/drops . ME1 on the 360 is virtualy unplayable. when you are fighting it’s like a stop motion animation! ME2 and 3 are slightly better…

Remember guys this is a LAUNCH PORT so Native 720p doesn’t mean they topped the wiiu out by any means. Probably just means – it’s a quick but effective port on a small budget. Straight right is a small studio …

I will keep my eyes on the reviews ! I was mass-ively interested in this game prior to the trilogy anouncement . But hopefully it’s decent.

But this is good news none the less !

      • ron

        Ward go to your room!!

  • td,y,i,.

Come on now third party devs, don’t be shy.

  • Nintendo Power (Chuck Norris)

And that’s what you call, being a good developer to Nintendo……….Unlike that one guy who hates the Wii U on the development of Darksiders 2 just because he didn’t get any credits

    • BloopbopBeepbop

funny thing about that, is the guy didnt even work on the wii u version.

  • Volcano

    Okay. Let’s solve the equation.
Wii U + 1st Party Games × Great Support of 2nd/3rd Party games= A console that rocks and blows everyone away!!!

    • Opheodrys

      You’re really good at math!

    • Derp

You forgot a couple more ingredients:

-Nintendo makes a profit per unit sold; this means they will cut back on porting/development fees. In short, more incentive to make games for it.
-Optional ways to control the game (if they allow the game to be controlled in different ways)
-Easy to develop for. Makes it more prefered.
-This is a compliment to Nintendo’s fanbase, it is a quite easy community to work with. Sony’s fanbase is OK since they are used to a lot of games, Microsoft’s fanbase isn’t easy going with new types games, and don’t get me started on the Personal Computer Elitist fanbase.

    • Lazara the Last

No, no, it have to be:
(Wii U^2 + 1st Party Games × Great Support of 2nd and 3rd Party games) / (Sony x Microsoft) = A console that rocks and blows everyone away!!!

    • Rubik’s Cube

      Wii U ÷ PS3 = <1.5

  • wiirtheworld

more goodnews cant wait already come on 30th of nov

  • Jeffery02

I don’t care if the Wii U is the most powerful system in the world or if it’s the weakest of this generation, I will play it for the games. The Wii U has the potential to be great and I plan to be there every step of the way! Leave the spec worries to the developers.

  • Nintendude

I’m pretty sure it doesn’t take a genius to figure this out.

    • Mussagimm

Oh, you wouldn’t believe the amount of idiots out there…

  • RoboticLink

I still do not get why it is not in native 1080p. Especially since it is so easy to develop for.

    • darkfox

      $$ that is all

      • Nintedward .

        ££ + Time constraints + the game is a port…

        • Mussagimm

        • revolution5268

    • D2K

Maybe because it is a port.

      • NintendoMan :D

Or because Nintendo only wants things to get better, so the game graphics now won’t be as good as they will be a year from now.

        • D2K

Well the resolution and graphics are two different things. The resolution on the GamePad is not HD, but look as good and sometimes even better on the images on the screen. Especially on Batman: Arkham City.

Mass Effect 3 is already a year-old game so why tack-on extra time to trying to make a port that was not rendered in native 1080p and make it so?

I think that the developers felt that it was more important to focus on gameplay and implementing the Wii U GamePad into the Mass Effect control scheme to give a new and improved experience to those whom have already played it, and an awesome experience to those (like myself) whom have not played it.

          • Nintedward .

Amen , the clarity of that gamepad is ridiculous. It looks like ipad retina scan!!! that epic clearness. Batman looks EPIC on the gamepad when holding up the pad 🙂

          • cbarroso

Do you know that the density resolution of the Wii U Gamepad is 158 pixels per inches, while the Ipad 2 has a density of 132 pixels per inch. The Ipad 3 has 264 pixels per inch, but just because its resolution is 2kp (2048 x 1536)

    • Sharlo Galmo

the only thing why it is not 1080p native is because not enough time!

    • That Boing guy

Because its a port. The game doesn’t even run on full native 1080p on PS3/360, no game on those platforms does.
And if it does play on 1080p is still just upscaled.

    • brain

because they are just porting it, no one is developing a whole new game just to put it on a new console. so hard to understand?

o yea, there maybe the reason that the hardware isn´t capable of putting big games like this to 1080p. but that´s just mo.

    • deSSy2724

Even PC gets bad ported games (bad optimisation) and some multiplatform games arent looking much better on PC (graphics). I own a i5 2500K and GTX 460 and trust me on that, yes, i can play in 1080p and with better frame rates (50-60 FPS or 70-100 FPS bla bla, depends on the game), but seriously, thats just a port (ME3) and 1080p resolution VS 720p resolution is not that much different as expected, but if i max the other graphics settings on my PC than the game looks better, so, resolution is not equal to next gen/better graphics etc. Resolution is just like AA, less jaggies…. and 4K resolution for example is overkill for small screens etc. You see what im saying? 720p, good AA, 40-60 FPS (or more ofc), and better graphics is better than 1080p, 30 FPS and not “spectacular graphics”…….

If the PS3 is in general stronger than Xbox 360 than explain me, why 80% multiplatform games are actually better looking on Xbox 360 and with more stable frame rate? answer to that question is simly: PORT, PORT, JUST A PORT FROM THE XBOX 360, 80% games (if not more than that) are made 1st for Xbox 360.

  • srpg2ishere

This is some good news. It’s good to hear more positive things about the awesome wii u.

  • NoPUNintendo

That’s good. But so far there’s not been to many exciting news surronding the Wii U. I’ll assuming most of us saw something like this coming, but right now, I’m waiting for another big major annoucment. Like a new game, or some other feature on the Wii U that Nintendo has been keeping a secret.

    • NintendoMan :D

Yeah, the news on hear has been mostly screenshots and reviews, with a spec announcement hear and there.

  • Nitesh

Another vague developer comment. Specifics, people! They are probably under NDA though I guess.

    • D2K

I thought that ran out earlier this year.

      • TheUNation

They already have, D2K. That infamous NDA has been already lifted on September 13th.

      • Nitesh

I still haven’t seen detailed specs from a well known developer then, I think they still have some restraints.

  • theorangefish

It is possible to be PR talk but I don’t think so……….

  • valtteri nikander

Like if wii U rocks and Will dominate the 8th generation

    • Joseph

I believe in your statement, but i’m downvoting because you turned it into cancer

  • Ledreppe

Yet more encouraging praise from developers.

  • just nin10do

im sure wii U supports 1080p at least in 30% of games

DUH IT’S POWERFUL….what do people think?

it’s a next gen console for those who dont know.so go ahead and throw away you’r wack 360’a and ps3’s and buy a fearless.

im giving my 360 away when i purchase the fearless on NOV.17

    • Derpy

“DUH IT’S POWERFUL….what do people think?

      it’s a next gen console”

We all though we’d get the same treatment when the Nintendo Revolution was all the news…

    • Cugno the Swiss

I hope you’re fearless too, because my punch has no mercy.

  • Christian

Now, this is a launch game (or launch window, I’m not sure) but nearly NO launch games start at 1080p. Even PS3 & XBox 360 had little to no launch games at 1080p. Like the developer said, they would upgrade it to 1080p later on, but no launch games and little launch window games will start at 1080p.

    • Trev

I think zombie u and Raymond legends are in 1080p native

      • TheBoldman67

So’s Batman, that game runs 1080p natively.

  • SteampunkJedi

More praise! Once again, I really hope this means more third parties will jump on board with full support of the Wii U. 😀

  • TrueWiiMaster

Sigh… I was going to try to get this game when it came out, but now that EA’s announced the ME Trilogy for the same price, I’m pretty disinterested. I don’t have a PS3 or 360, but I’m not going to pay $60 for ME3 when sitting in the same aisle is all three games for $60. This is just another reason EA’s garbage these days.

    • Trev

I had the same concern however I don’t want to buy a Xbox or a ps3 just to play theses games. Maybe I am naive but I hope it sells well enough that they will put the first two games on the eshop !

  • bambam

Sweet!! Can’t wait to start up my Wii u for the first time

    • TheBoldman67

      Me either.

  • jon

    nice to hear encouraging news

  • ssb4 3dsFC3007 8585 6950

thank you for telling me something i ALREADY KNOW! but this is quite encouraging and i hear mass effect 3 is a fantastic game

  • smallNdeadly

I still getting WU on launch day however…my big concern now is Nintendo is still making stupid choices with there online strategy. Most notable the voice chart. I personally don’t have internet but from a biz perspective online is huge. That’s why CoD #1 game of all time in sales. To not have system chart is just stupid. Especially when they keep saying they are going after the core gamers. It hurts the developers cuz that’s extra stuff they have to program for. Pro controller no plug at all. Their actions counter act their words. I hope they rectify the problem quickly or that will be another reason for ps360 owners to stay where there at. I know this going to get down voted but the more of this Nintendo sees the more likely they will fix it.

    • cbarroso

COD will have voice chat. I think most of the games that need it will have it, like MAss Effect or Assassins Creed, but i don’t see any reason why games like Mario will, or Zelda. Even Wii games have voice chat, but just the ones that need it, so you won’t have any problems to play in cooperative modes. The Pro Controller doesn’t have a port for headsets because is not the main controller i understand that, you have to play with the Gamepad. Hey man that thing has all the buttons you need, why is it so different from other console controllers?. I don’t know why people say is crap, if the journalists that actually try it say that it feel very well.

    • Marioravesto3d

I belive your wrong, the quality of games will judge the wii u.Sounds really positive already.

      • smallNdeadly

Missing the point. Nintendo wants the core gamer. Most are used to having a good online set up. So far from what I’ve read Nintendo isn’t going to be as good as the others outside of the media dwpartment. I understand they are trying to protect kids. But the average gamer is 37 yr old. Let the parents protect the kids. That’s there job not nintendo . And having to develop the chat into the game is more $ for development and with this going to be the weaker of the next gen consoles they are going to need every edge they can get. I agree games do make the console but online is part of the game.

        • smallNdeadly

Don’t get me wrong I want the wii u to succeed that’s why I’m putting this here. Its an easy fix for them. Wii u supports blu tooth let’s use it and put chart into the os

        • Marioravesto3d

No one knows how the online is going to play,as far as I know it as voice chat for some games ie call of duty which is needed.Mii is going to be pretty cool.

  • redcomshell

I don’t know anything about porting, but couldn’t they just port the PC version since it supports 1080p?

    • Nitesh

Its architecture is closer to the current consoles, they would still be easier to port from.

  • Nitedward

  • Johny

epic awsome news is epicly awsome xD

  • cbarroso

It is time to see if the other consoles sold because people wanted to play big ported franchise games, or because they were better than the Wii. Now i don’t have to buy the next gen microsoft or sony consoles, because my Nintendo will allow me to play my POWER.

  • Marioravesto3d

Have said all along wii u will blow ps3 and 360 away, the machine is very powerful.Play on my ps3 alot or did do should write now.Have had loads of consoles and computers ie amstrad 464 with the green monitor lol.Looking forward to this the most the quality of games and gamepad can’t wait.

    • brain

i don´t get why people like you aren´t getting that actual hardware has to be more powerful than 7 year old hardware… and yep, the ps4 and xboxwhatever will blow the wiiu away. just evolution of hardware, nothing special.

  • Arsonist Monkey

Third Party developers must be really afraid to praise the Wii U in the thought that it will fail.

  • Mac

hey wiiudaily staff the first advert for the wii u aired in the uk is right here

  • 3dsgamer

i thought the game was not gong to be a launch title.

    • XxTwinRova

thats what I was wondering. Gamestop doesn’t even have a release date set in their systems for the game .

  • TheUNation

Straight Right should develop another Wii U title from third party publishers. Square/Enix is one of them.

    • TheUNation

Another Sony drone giving me a thumbs down? Really…?

  • MechaDestroyah

This made me wonder how well the Wii U upscales.

  • Maverick-Hunter

This game looks very high end I dont know if it’s the graphics or the the time they are in needless to say. This game is a launch title and like most systems we probably won’t see the wii u’s full power until they release that Zelda game they mentioned. My point is I’m already impressed by something that isn’t dishing out full power 🙂

  • Inuboy1000

I want ME3 to be successful on the Wii U so we can get more support from EA.

  • srpg2ishere

  • AwayToHit

    Wii U wins! FATALITY!

  • XxTwinRova

Is this really going to be a Launch title? I have it already paid off and pre ordered but there are so many sites that say it’s a launch window release, as in after the 18th of november. I want this game so bad. In fact it’s one of the reasons i’m getting the wii U. can someone let me know please ?
