While the Wii experienced a quick death with a rapid drop-off of anything but shovelware and obscure JRPGs late in its life, it had some of the highest rated games available of the last-generation. 11 games reached a status of 90+ on MetaCritic, which begs the question: will the Wii U meet this same critical success in terms of games that are considered instant classics? First, let’s take a look at the Wii games: 90+ rated Wii games Mario Galaxy Mario Galaxy 2 Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess World of Goo Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Super Smash Bros. Brawl Metroid Prime Trilogy Xenoblade Chronicles Resident Evil 4 Metroid Prime 3 Okami Of these titles, both Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2 are original Wii titles. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was a GameCube port that received upgrades to the graphics and controls in order to support the new Wii Remote. World of Goo is the only WiiWare title on the list. So where does that leave the Wii U in the future? Well, we’re into the second year of the Wii U life cycle and we already have three titles rated at 90+ MetaCritic score. Those titles are: 90+ rated Wii U Titles Super Mario 3D World Rayman Legends The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD Despite the notably shorter list here, the Wii U is on track to possibly match the Wii in terms of highly rated games for the system. If we look at Wii releases and Wii U releases that we know are coming, there’s a match up in pattern. Super Smash Bros. Brawl made the 90+ list for the Wii and we know a sequel is currently on the way. Xenoblade Chronicles made the list as well, and we know Monolith Soft’s unnamed X game features the same combat style. Additionally, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD is a GameCube port that received a significant upgrade for its Wii U release and it’s possible The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask will follow. The only factor here that we don’t have confirmation on is whether a new Metroid game is headed to Wii U. With Retro having finished up Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, it’s likely they’ll be working on a brand new project for Nintendo. Whether that’s Metroid remains to be seen, but if games similar to the Prime Trilogy are released for the Wii U, then they have a high chance of becoming critically-acclaimed as well. While we can’t be certain the Wii U will follow the same pattern of its predecessor, the signs look good. Everyone keeps saying “oh, this is the death of Nintendo” but Nintendo has been through much worse than this. Plus, everyone said the same thing about the Gamecube, Wii, and 3DS, and now everyone loves those. I just can’t wait when people love it and I go all hipster on them, haha matthew garcia I think wii u can match it. Theres just this feeling though that nobody is paying attention though. The games are gonna score well but everyone is losing touch with nintendo consoles. It shows in the sales. If wii u had 3ds library of games my god it would blow the competition away. I love rpgs and 3ds and ds have all the good ones Daniel Gonzalez It’ll for sure have it’s top quality titles you’d expect from Nintendo. Though, it won’t have the same success like the Wii. There aren’t enough Nintendo fans vs the rest of the gamer population. matthew garcia Yeah nintendo is the minority right now greengecko007 The Nintendo fanbase has been in the minority for years. thedeciderU maybe they should advertise the console and games? what are they thinking? it’s been a year. the system won’t sell just because of nintendo branding. i underestimated the wii for years (picked one up a few months before wiiu launch), though i’m still not crazy about most of the motion controls. and the gamecube i still don’t have to this day. Capt. Smoker I honestly think they don’t know how to appeal to non Nintendo gamers… it’s a problem for sure, considering most gamers love the mature stuff these days, I can’t see a lot of people being interested in the system, which is why 3rd party is so vital right now to give people that mature experience. Magnus Eriksson I think there are Nintendo fans. But there is only a minority who thinks Iwata does a good job. Most fans are not stupid, and they dont buy the Wii U because they see it as a sad sign of degeneration of a formerly great company. The destruction Iwata have brought over Nintendo is sad. Fire him, Reggie and Miyamoto, then fresh voices can modernize Nintendo. URFTBOUND4LIFE . Not sure if any of them should be fired. Sure the Wii U was a misfire, but the Wii ,the DS an 3DS did the company good. I think Iwata should just be in charge of the handheld division and maybe someone with some experience get a hold on the home console side of things. I’m still rooting for them, but they gotta get it together with the Wii U. Eduardo I have a Wii U, PS4, and XBOX ONE and honestly I play Wii U the most. All 3 systems are bad ass but Nintendo is just funner to play with and the game pad kicks ass it’s my favorite control then the Dualshock 4 and then the Xbox One control. That’s just my opinion. Hopper200456 That’s awesome. I feel bad though, because of how little games are for Xbox and PS4. Atleast Xbox is getting Titanfall? matthew garcia I feel bad for nintendo with the bad sales and 1 game out every 3 months Swampert Master Yeah, but that is also being released for PC and Xbox 360, meaning Xbox one version will probably get the least amount of sales out of the bunch. Hopper200456 Yeah, haha, I played the Beta and it was AWESOME. But the download for the PC is 50 Gigabytes!!! Swampert Master Wow! Didn’t know it was such a big game! Maybe the Mech perspective makes everything look small Brandon Little games. The life of those consoles just started and there doing pretty well and receiving at least one game a month, but thats going to change once devs drop last gen(which is still good, but needs to be over). Still not getting the hate on xbox. Steph Ps4 and xb1 have been out for a few months…..Nintendo wiiU for a year, big difference. mikeslemonadeFromN4G It will not because WiiU’s life will be shorter than Wii, and 4 of those games for Wii1 were from the Gamecube era. The only game that was last gen on this end is Rayman Legends. And you forget about WiiSports on the Wii1 which should have been a critical success when you consider the effect it made. And that’s saying something because in terms of quality game support for Wii1 it failed in comparison to its install base. Typically when you sell 100 mil the system would last longer than Wii but you got severs already closing down and typically you would have more than 10 games over 90 metascore. pbd2 I play my Wii U the least, I loved Mario World and Pikmin but they dont have a lot of replay value for me. Traded and moved on. In fact the only WiiU game I now own is Nintendo Land. I have been playing Final Fantasy on Xbox 360 and Fifa on Xbox one recently. thedeciderU true, i absolutely buy nintendo consoles for mario games, but the newer games (galaxy and SM3DW) don’t have a lot of replay value for me. now super mario bros., 1, 2, and 3 definitely still do. i like world as well. i missed out on mario 64 so i’m going to track that down in cartridge form hopefully this year and dig in. the 2D sidescrollers get me. thedeciderU and just recently picked up super mario world 2: yoshi’s island. i’d love to get more into that. there are way too many games to play. Saul Rivera I play both the Wii U and PS3 the same…PS3 because of PS+ which keeps me busy..and Wii U for its indies and Monster Hunter 3 which I play the most…oh and have been playing DK daily with a friend… That said…there are also so many games I started once and didn’t play again…not because they suck..but because I have the habit of buying more when I see them cheap =_= Still on my “to finish one of these days” list are… Wii U:Assassin’s Creed 3…Deux Ex…Zombi U…Ninja Gaiden 3 and the rest downloadables… PS3:DMC…Remember Me…Metro…Crysis 3…Bioshock Infinite..FF13 1 & 2..L.A.Noire…Uncharted 3 and the rest downloadable indie games… Maybe I’m getting old and don’t feel like finishing games anymore T-T DragonSilths Wii U and PS4, fine. Xbox One? WHY? Way to support the filth in the industry aka Microsoft. Cole Brinley Dunce. DragonSilths U Mad Bro? Steph Lol grow up DragonSilths Tell me something, why do you have to insult someone who simply has the opinion I do? Can you tell me 1 thing Microsoft has brought to the gaming industry that has been a benefit? Can you honestly condone them as a company? If so I think you will find that its not me, but you who needs to “grow up” InterTreble It’s the opinion of several people, too. But they prefer not to say it, beacause it is against what the mass say. Never go against the mass. matthew garcia 1 game every 3 months and cartoon graphics draw no hipster attention Magnus Eriksson Wii had 11 games above 90 score, and you call that a critical success??? LMAO! PS3 had 52 games at 90 or more. This actually proves that Nintendo should go third party. They cannot provide a console with enough good games to justify it. Hopper200456 It’s funny. The PS4 only has 1 game rated at 90, and it’s flower. The Wii U has 2. 2 may not be great, but it’s better than 1. Also, I hate it when people complain about Nintendo not making enough games for their console, when Sony and Microsoft don’t even make any* games for their consoles! *Except for some (Uncharted, Halo, ect…) Magnus Eriksson 2 games in 17 months… 52 vs 11… Hopper200456 Arguing is silly and childish, so I’m just gonna leave before that happens. 🙂 Have a nice day! Magnus Eriksson Ok 🙂 Coval83 I love Gamecube… Stiil I have Double dash!!, Eternal Darkness, Mario Sunshine, F-Zero, Resi 4, Metroid 1& 2(i miss them on Wii U), Soul Calibur 2 (even in poland, for the championship of computer games, I appealed to the organizers of the game to the Nintendo controllers in soul calibur …)… 3rd party… hmmm… Nintendo… 1st party!!!… And 2nd… 🙂 Kyle Edwards That title. Daniel Gonzalez If you mean the same success overall in sales of the WIi, nah. That isn’t going to happen. With little third party on board, say hello to the next Gamecube. matthew garcia This is ps2 era all over again. Ps4 will dominate sales and microsoft and nintendo will fight for the scraps. Daniel Gonzalez Pretty much. I don’t think any console will hit 100 million again. There’s more competition from even mobile devices that casuals appear to love now. Ashley King No, I don’t mean overall sales. This has nothing to do with sales. I mean will the games released for this system have the same critical acclaim as those released for the Wii. A game can receive critical acclaim and still be considered a flop. SamusPrime Ashley, this is Daniel’s MO. Daniel Gonzalez Of course it’ll have critical acclaim, it’s not often that a Nintendo game gets a majority of bad reviews. I briefly explained that to another poster below. However, I’m adding to the news. Just as a game can have critical acclaim and still be considered a flop, same logic applies to a console. SamusPrime Clearly this article isn’t about sales. Your schtick is getting pretty old. Daniel Gonzalez As does the typical complaints from posters like you. Ignore it and move along. Ony All I see is Metroid Prime so RETRO STUDIOS, GOTTA WORK ON THAT METROID D: Mr Ninty i think the wiiu will have more 90+games in store then the wii. its because i think nintendo will work harder on games and release more games because of the poor sales so they can try and boost the sales by waving 90+games in the face of sony and xbox fans Joey Pikmin 3 for the Wii U should have been included in the list as well… Ashley King Pikmkin 3 does not have a 90+ or above on MetaCritic. It’s currently sitting at 87. Daniel Gonzalez Still a quality title nonetheless. thedeciderU i keep wondering if i should pick this one up. i’m afraid i won’t be too into it. i have to play through wind waker HD anyway. Joey I do not like MetaCritic and never have, stupidist site i ever goto. Besides i love Pikmin 3 has the best visual graphics and gameplay to my liking, sorry i cannot agree with this. Daniel Gonzalez You may not like them, but they are the few that keep track of overall ratings like gamerankings. Reviews are opinions, so it doesn’t take away anything from Pikmin 3. Regardless, it scored less than 90, so it wouldn’t make sense to add it to the list. Joey that’s true though but i do not agree with the review though as i give myself a 90+ score for Pikmin3. 88 was the highest and is very close. greengecko007 I’m fine with opinions, and people voicing them, but I definitely think that there are some opinions that are more educated than others, and that there are clearly reviews that are not conducted in a professional way. Being that metacritic simply averages review scores together, I feel that in many (see *most*) cases the scores are the result of obvious skewing. For example, I like Pikmin 3 immensely, but don’t pretend like it’s perfect. There are obvious flaws with the Pikmin AI, and problems with the level design that can result in thrown Pikmin becoming irretrievable. Yet Nintendojo gave Pikmin 3 a 100 out of 100, which should be reserved for games that are flawless. http://www.nintendojo.com/reviews/review-pikmin-3 On the opposite end of the spectrum, this site gave Pikmin 3 a 60 out of 100 yet gave absolutely no reason as to why it wasn’t perfect. The review speaks only positively of the game, yet ends with a 3 out of 5 star rating that isn’t justified. http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2013/08/05/four-reasons-pikmin-3-isnt-underwhelming/ Simply put, reviews like this don’t make any sense from an argumentative point of view, and shouldn’t be weighted on the same level as professional reviews. Daniel Gonzalez Even professional reviewers make the same mistakes. So to be fair, there’s no such thing as a professional review. Lol. I think you more mean that reviews shouldn’t be weighted on the same level if reviewers haven’t played the game all the way through. No matter which way it’s said, reviews are opinions and nothing is professional about that. Anyone can do that. I never really care overall what a game gets, as I prefer to trust my own judgment. They make a good second opinion, but nothing more. greengecko007 By professional, I mean people that get paid to review. These reviews should be taken into higher consideration than amateur reviews, as any person can make a website and slap reviews together, and of course there’s the miscellaneous bloggers. I also understand that it’s not the score that matters, but at the same time, this is partially because they are so easily skewed on sites like Metacritic. There are plenty of games in which “reviewers” write up an opinion and slap a 100 on a game they liked and a 0 on a game they didn’t like. This isn’t to say that the opinions aren’t valid, just that the collective average rating system is inherently flawed. Rinslowe A professional reviewer in my opinion, is anyone who has a talent in writing. Is articulate with the basics and perceptive in area’s most people wouldn’t care to look. Someone that builds a narrative foundation, but provides a fresh perspective and carries the review through even pacing. Not to mention a critical and unbiased eye. Whether they get paid to deliver something like that is not important to me. And I think it’s not always paid gaming journalists, delivering this kind of review… But yeah, a “professional” is generally someone with both “education” and “experience” in a given field (which I totally think is necessary). Often misjudged on their level of credibility by their status as a paid individual or entity (which I think is not always an accurate indicator to either “education” or “experience”). Sorry for the rant. A little off on a tangent as well… Rinslowe I think we all just need to make up our own minds at the end of the day. Reviews are guaranteed to vary from site to site. And there’s two sides to the extremes. But with a little common sense and like what metacritic is doing, we can all read enough between the lines… Thankfully, the no’ of sites offering decent reviews outweighs the silly ones… I remember reading a random review of SM3DW before I downloaded it, that gave it a 5/10. Needless to say, I don’t think that would have likely factored into the metacritic score. And even if it did, it wouldn’t have made much of an impact to averages… thedeciderU yeah, i love/hate metacritic because of user reviews that include users that don’t own the system of game. seeing the critics all in one spot is great though. Shota lol troll ratings. pikmin 3 should be on the list because of how great it was. dlc wasn’t that pricey and where pretty good. Roman IDK, I bought Pikmin 3 in December, but I still haven’t touched it (My younger siblings have played a lot of it, but neither of them finished the game and stopped playing it all together about a month ago). I’m sure it’s a fun game, but for some reason I’m not drawn to it. I loved the first one on the Gamecube, but all that joy and magic seems trapped in my childhood, and not calling to me in the present. Like a Disney movie, I love it but would not want to watch one right now. I think the question shouldn’t be whether the Wii U games will achieve the same critical success as the Wii (because really there are all sequels). I think the question should be whether or not established Nintendo franchises will continue to have an impact/influence on the masses. T-X It’s more of a RTS alternative; if you’re into that and look at it in that way you might like it more. Rinslowe True, it should be on a “list” for one of Wii U’s best experiences. But the article is making a very simple comparison to titles rated 90+… It’s still an interesting comparison in that respect. ZyroXZ2 Having just posted my review of DKC:TF, I hate that looking at overall reviews, I can feel the “sting” some reviewers have over Retro not making a Metroid game, and I think DKC:TF would have been higher if it weren’t for some of the bitterness I can sense. Dj I think it has a shot. IF people stop hating on it. Do you know how many times I’ve seen people hate in Nintendo for absolutely no reason at all. Im sure we’ve all seen it, and the wii u bashing is no different. If Nintendo gets ads out for MK8, SSBU, announces a Metroid, Zelda, and Star Fox, and adds cool new features, IT WILL SELL. Definitely with an announcement of SMG3, a game that can cause ridiculous sales. Will the Wii U sell as much as the Wii? Probably not. But I believe if handled well, it can acheive 50 million sales at the least. I just hope EA, xbox fanboys, and #michaelpatcherisaloser will shut the hell up. Fred First of all I’m compelled to say that I don’t understand how Wonderful 101 isn’t in the 90s (but that’s just me obviously a lot of people don’t agree with me there) I’m guessing X will be there and the new SSB and the new Zelda so that puts us up to 6 (assuming there are no surprise entries which might happen) so I’d be tempted to think it’s a 90% probability, but how long of a life will Wii U have? Nintendo didn’t spend that many years developing games for the Wii (like Ashley mentioned they basically dropped support before the Wii U launched) and I’m going to assume it’ll be about the same for the Wii U. Now you’ll be surprised to hear that even though Gamecube sold much worse than Wii it had 26 games in the 90 or above on Metacritic. http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/available/gamecube/metascore?view=condensed&hardware=all And I believe 10 of them were done by Nintendo. Since we’re likely to see only 2 or 3 3rd party games on this list for Wii U (as 3rd parties are dropping Wii U like flies) I’d say don’t expect 26 like gamecube, but Nintendo is expanding their reach on games they publish (see Bayonetta 2, W101, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Hyrule Warriors, SSB) in that they are involving more studios than just the ones they fully own. My prediction is 12 games at a 90 or higher. Hopper200456 I AGREE. WONDERFUL 101 IS ONE OF THE MOST UNAPPRECIATED GAMES EVER. Daniel Gonzalez That’s the risk of creating a new IP. It’s hit and miss. Fred Yes, people beg and plead for new IP and then when we get one we refuse to buy it. Rinslowe No exactly. W101, definitely a stand out moment in 2013 gaming from a novel perspective. But it’s not the type of game that can be a instant hit with mainstream gamer’s. Or I should say that, you had to be open to it in the first place to give it a try… After that, I believe most people would have liked it, as nearly everyone that actually played it did… Then there was the whole marketing thing, which could have been a lot better. One thing that western studios absolutely understand, is how to hype up a new IP… HydePark1980 Gamers only want new IP’s in the form of shooters. Rinslowe Surely not… 🙁 HydePark1980 Game sales don’t lie my friend. Rinslowe I was applying “sarcasm”. But yeah… Too many shooters today. Some I like, most I do not… Fred But the amount of marketing should affect sales not review scores. Don’t most reviewers conquer (or at least almost conquer) the game before they review it? This would mean that they all gave it a try. The thing I thought was interesting was at the end of 2013, Nintendo said that W101 got one of the highest ratings from their player ratings. Rinslowe I’m sorry, but does your comment have to do with review scores? “Yes, people beg and plead for new IP and then when we get one we refuse to buy it.” Obviously people need more than a good review, to invest in a new franchise. And you’re assuming most people read the reviews on this game. Either factor not being nearly as important to people wanting to own the game even before the reviews are made. That’s called effective marketing… Something – W101 – was unfortunately lacking. Therefore it required more open minded individuals to just – give it a try… thedeciderU i picked it up recently, though haven’t had a lot of time with it. i got a little frustrated in the first 20 minutes because i felt like i was being taken out of the experience too often. i’ll give it another go when i’m able. Fred Bayonetta 1 got a 90 so I’m going to say there’s a 50/50 chance Bayonetta 2 makes it. Rinslowe ” but how long of a life will Wii U have? Nintendo didn’tspend that many years developing games for the Wii (like Ashley mentioned they basically dropped support before the Wii U launched) and I’m going to assume it’ll be about the same for the Wii U.” PS3 and 360 are enjoying longer mainstream lifespans. Wii’s was kind of average in that respect regarding Nintendo’s own standard. So no surprises there… Fred Well…come to think of it, you’re right. What else can I say? Rinslowe I don’t know about you, but I “need” to see X release this year. So far I’m not so sure it’s gonna make it… Fred The documents from their January investors meeting says it’s coming this year. It just doesn’t say which month so I’m assuming December Rinslowe Yeah, that and it was again shown in the recent direct. Which overall had a focus on games “this” year… But for some unknown reason and very little details about the title overall. It feels like anything could be possible with a release date. How long does a game like this one take? Hmm, I get the sentiment. But yeah, I don’t think there is a standard for an RPG like this one. And it’s very possibly a lot more time consuming than any of their previous titles to date. Still, surely enough time… Shota world of goo? ZyroXZ2 “Wii the Wii U”? Wha?! o_O Shota lol that profile picture. DIRECTLY XD ZyroXZ2 Yea, came from a contest I did for Nintendo… Didn’t win, but made a whole talk show out of it, lmao Shota sucks that you didn’t win. but i like that picture 🙂 ZyroXZ2 Ah, she fixed the title now, lol Kinhas Nintendo has the best IP’s! It always had critical acclaimed games, but people see them as kid games x) Maybe if mario instead of game over screen had his head chopped off by a goomba people would like it better. Joey LEGO Marvel Super Heroes got a 9/10 rated score by IGN . Daniel Gonzalez It has an 82/100 overall rating score. Joey PS3 version got 91 overall rating score Wii U should not be any difference i go by ratings not community sorry that’s just me. Daniel Gonzalez That score came from reviews. Not community. Lol. Also, PS3 had an 82 as well. Not sure where you got the 91 from. Joey i already said where i got it, from IGN lol. PS3 also got 9/10 review. Daniel Gonzalez That proves what exactly? Lol. Joey GameSpot, IGN, MetaCritic and other sites all give different reviews so they do not agree with each other, so i do not like MetaCritic as everyone is different. Daniel Gonzalez MetaCritic doesn’t leave reviews. They just give out the average rating score. So I wouldn’t blame them. Of course each is different, that’s why it’s up to you to trust your own judgment on what you believe is to be true. Joey I see, but i still do not go by them anyways. Daniel Gonzalez Same here. They are there for those who don’t have their own opinion or just want the second opinion before purchasing. People like myself just like to see what critics think about it. Entropyguy Er…that’s not what ‘begs the question’ means. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. palomino blue Would have been something to see Rayman stay exclusive to the Wii U. It might even be my favorite game for the system, but not a system seller by any means since it’s available on other consoles with a much higher install base. I’ve probably put the most time into that that title, then SM3DW. Capt. Smoker Wii U seems to be heading towards a good old fashioned formula on focusing on great gameplay with appealing games, So I think it will. fliadaloisio Yes… John Andalora I don’t believe it will. And so what? I don’t see the reason why it needs to. And even then, “critically acclaimed” doesn’t mean they’re the best. Consider this: most of the Call of Dity games are given fairly high ratings on metacritic (Ghosts so far is the worst). We see things like 88 on MW3, 83 or BLOPS 2, and 94 for MW2. Doesn’t mean you all are gonna go out and love em, does it? And even still, you can still have fun with something that’s not a 90 or higher on metacritic. ZombiU was pretty fun, wasn’t it? I liked it. I think the Wii U doesn’t need critically acclaimed games. I think it just needs more unique games that complement the GamePad. thedeciderU great points. and zombiu was one hell of a good time. tense as hell, but in that good way. awesome use of the gamepad. i would buy the sequel. i’d even preorder it and i don’t preorder anything. thedeciderU i think it can happen. it’s still early 2014 and many heavy hitters are on the way, whether they appeal to me personally or not. the problem is that we need more games announced. many more. nintendo has lots of work to do, in may areas. let’s hope they can pull it off well. Javier Vega I am still waiting for games to come out. Blue Hernandez Sonic Boom will make this list with ease. matthew garcia Ha name the last sonic that made that list. Probably hasnt been done since genesis David Trail Sonic Colours, Generations, Lost World. matthew garcia Lol those gamed got horrible reviews David Trail Only Lost World did and it was pretty good regardless IMO. David Trail Sonic Rush series and Sonic Chronicles were also good. greengecko007 None of them… Sonic Colors – 78 Sonic Generations – 77-76-66 Sonic Lost World – 63-59 David Trail Sonic Lost Workd only got reviewed badly out of them. greengecko007 None of the recent Sonic games have gotten 90 or above on Metacritic. While it’s possible, it’s highly unlikely Sonic Boom will break the trend and be an exceptional game. Sega has shown for years that they don’t really know what to do with Sonic in 3D environments. Going back to their roots is the only way they can save their already steadily declining fanbase. Blue Hernandez Sonic Adventure shows what they should never have gotten away from as its still better than most of the games that have come out this year KZ? Ryse? Please none of them have been as impressively fun as Sonic Adventure. Blue Hernandez Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Nookling As much as I try to enjoy them I always end up disliking every Sonic game I get NyallJodhan It should. Problem is, and not just with this game, is the amount of people already posting 1 star reviews for the game because of some nonsense like they don’t like the character redesign, etc. Too many idiotic reviewers out there. NyallJodhan I came here to try the image share! This is awesome! Rinslowe Nice grab… NyallJodhan Thanks. Donaald The Wii U won’t have the commercial success the Wii had but I’ve been liking their first party games so far, however if the console wants to stay relevant they need to get rid of their 80’s mentality of “build it and they will come” ever since the Playstation that doesn’t work anymore, now, let’s go back to 2007 when the PS3 was in a similar situation, developers had a hard time learning from the console, sales were horrible and barely any game was seen on the console, but Sony changed that by offering better incentives to publishers and next thing you know the PS3 was outselling the 360 and had more than 90 great exclusives, that’s what Nintendo needs to do, find out what Sony did and offer better incentives to publishers. Green Well Mario 3D world and Donkey Kong have already been pretty well received, and lets be honest X looks pretty amazing. 😛 lonewolf Wait what rpgs of the late years of the wii are obscure? DragonSilths Yes, but not the same console sales as the Wii. jrob23 It’s too bad a few morons, who seemingly alternate being douches, for each game…bring the Metacritic scores down otherwise you’d have DKCR added to that list for Wii and Pikmin 3 for the Wii U. Obviously DKTF deserves a 9 as well but like I said, there are a few absolute clueless idiots out there reviewing games and their outlandish low scores affect the overall metacritic score. The Wii, imho, had many more 9s than that though. I think when all is said and done the Wii U will have close to the same amount of quality games. Nookling They don’t like Donkey Kong because of it’s platformer qualities and difficulty being too hard… Sam I hope so. World of Goo? Roman I think the question shouldn’t be whether the Wii U games will achieve the same critical success as the Wii (because really there are all sequels). I think the question should be whether or not established Nintendo franchises will continue to have an impact/influence on the masses. David Trail Nintendo Land, Wonderful 101, Zombi U all sequels? Roman Non of those games were relevant. I loved playing Nintendo land with my friends over (the first month we put in like a total of 30 hours doing Luigi’s Mansion and Candy Day). But it faded away. Not a classic. A fun assortment of mini-games that you can only play when you have 4 people over (or siblings). And even then, how many times can you play the same 5 games? Zombi U had a lot of potential, but ultimately a let down. When people think of Zombies in entertainment they think of something like WarZ or Nazi Zombies from CoD, not Zombie U. Wonderful 101… I don’t know, I’m sure the game play could be fun, but I am not drawn to even want to play that game what so ever. It seems like one of those B games that you get when you’re young and don’t have a lot of money or you just happened to find a great bargain. Like I said: non of them are relevant to gaming culture/society yet alone the public masses (which, let’s be honest, is how high budget games make money). Rinslowe “While the Wii experienced a quick death with a rapid drop-off of anything but shovelware and obscure JRPGs late in its life, it had some of the highest rated games available of the last-generation.” After 100m sales – It’s better to burn out, than to fade away! On a totally different note. I think they should have had the black version as a standard option, with white as the deluxe… I get it, I think… But definitely more partial to the white version… oontz I don’t mind the black, just wish they went for a matte finish on the gamepad and not super glossy… finger print magnet! Rinslowe Yeah, I like the black deluxe as well. It fits well with my component set up. But I just like the white more… Stormtrooper… verymetal As history proves – great games sell systems. The Wii U could very easily be the most successful console in history, it just needs great games. Also, the Wii U needs more variety in its games. But, one great game that becomes a must have is all it takes. Heaven on Earth Whether or not the wii u match the same success of the wii in terms of classic games to me is irrelevant as long as the wiiu make great games to play the credit should go to nintendo still being number one at making masterpieces until this day and that the wii u should be acknowledged as a great system because of its creativity. On that note I am playing a masterpiece now. GregoryTheRainMaker As far as games are concerned…yes. I don’t think it will ever have the Wii appeal though…unless the Wii U pulls a 3DS. TheWichi Xbox 360 had 53 games with score of 90 or more… Nookling Almost all of these are 1st party Quicksilver88 Yeah but the majority of those games are also on ps3 and pc. Truly when talking about critically excellent games only exclusives should be considered. M$ had the Halo games, Forza, Gears, and maybe Fable2. For my tastes ps3 had far more meaningful and diverse exclusives, while I usually found X360 versions of multiplats to be slightly better. AlienFanatic Give me a new Zelda, Metroid, F-Zero, StarFox, and maybe bribe some of the old Rare guys to come together and make one of the titles they didn’t sell to Microsoft. It’s not rocket science, but it’s an awful lot of work. Nintendo can really make the Wii-U shine but they have to work hard and spend some serious $$$’s for 2nd party development to make up for the lack of 3rd party support. Quicksilver88 Actually the oringinal Rare founders have a new Indy sudio and are working on something for WiiU….what would be nice oif if Nintendo woulf fund them to do large budget exlsuive. David Trail I don’t call Last Story, Pandoras Tower, Xenoblade Chronicles or Elite Beat Agents Or Skyward Sword Shovel ware. Quicksilver88 I agree but many people put the system away and the system did fall of considerably after 2011. Really Shitware hurt the Wii you so bad. I can make you a quality top 100+ games list for Wii, and most people never played more than 10. Games like Mad World, No more heroes, Red Steele 2, zach and Wiki, that cartoon batman game, Demon sword, Xenoblade, Last Story, 007, Epic Mickey……I could go on but most Wii gamers never tuched these games. Many were never pushed ormpromted and the shelves were lined with horrible license ports and other crap. David Trail They were the casuals. Not the system. Quicksilver88 I really think they should get Wii games on eShop. Let you buy and dowload them thru WiiU then installs them on Wii SD card to play in Wii mode. Some of these missed games might get another look. Peter YT This is easy, the answer is no, The wii u is a failure Rick van der Linde I know right? Let’s go and troll on Nintendo news to show them how much fun we’re having with our other system! Peter YT not trollin is the truth 00EpicGamer00 You’re not “tellin” the truth. Your statement of “wii u is a failure” is YOUR opinion. An opinion can NOT be a fact. And before you go all “welll, it sold bad! No good sale numbers! That’s my proof!” First of all, yeah, it’s no secret that it hasn’t sold the best in it’s first year, but it did make decent sales. If it didn’t make decent sales, that Nintendo wasn’t okay with, then Nintendo would of dropped the Wii U by now. The Wii U, is what? At 4 million or so, by now? That’s not all that bad. The Virtual Boy (a.k.a. the only real failure Nintendo has had) sold only 770,000 units, in it’s entire LIFETIME (it’s lifetime, I believe, was just one year.) The virtual boy never even made it to one million. The Wii U made it to three million units before it’s “birthday” in 2013. Therefore, it’s not really a “failure.” Now, is the Wii U having a slow start? Yes, you could say that, but it’s not a failure, at least not at this point in time. Peter YT Even Iwata said it himself 00EpicGamer00 Umm, no. Iwata never said “the Wii U is a failure.” I don’t remember exactly what he said, but I believe he said something like “the Wii U isn’t performing how we thought it would be” or something like that. He is not saying, “the Wii U failed”, all he’s doing is admitting that the Wii U’s performance isn’t what he had in mind. There’s a difference between struggling, and failing. Is the Wii U struggling right now? Yeah, you could say that. As, like I said before, the Wii U has a decent amount of sales at this time. But, Nintendo must try and keep the games coming, so they can get from “decent” to “amazing” sales. Is the Wii U failing? No. The definition of “fail” is “to not be successful.” And, uh….there’s no way to decide something is a failure or not until later in its life. If in 3-4 years from now, the Wii U is still at 4 million, then yeah, it’d be a failure. But, that’s something we’re going to have to wait and see for. I mean, come on! You see all the time a teacher telling that one kid “you’re not going to be successful. You’re going to be a failure,” When, in reality, the kid ends up growing up into a CEO of a major company. Peter YT Dude relax, no need to write long paragraphs is just video games lol and the wii u is a failure it has not delivered. Each nintendo direct has been shitty except the january one of last year. We don’t even have confirmed dates for games. Oh Wait till E3. I had the console since day one and of course is a failure, no games after no games, delay after delay, I apoligize after I apoligize 00EpicGamer00 Why? You too lazy to actually read a well-written thought? And no, for the last time, the Wii U is NOT a failure. There is no evidence suggesting the Wii U will be a failure. The only POSSIBLE and LOGICAL way of figuring that out, is to wait and see how it performs for the next couple of years. Just because YOU are unhappy with a product, that doesn’t make the product a failure. Quicksilver88 I am with you. I am so tired of trolls and haters on Ninendo forums and the fact is the likely don’t have WiiU or haven’t played it. They spout crap about framrates and performance of WiiU games they haven’t played. The truth is WiiU got a lot of good gamed in year one. Pikman, 2 Marios, Zelda WW, W101, MH3U, LegoCity, DKTF, Rayman….I know there were some bad ports, but there were some solid ones as well. NFSMW, DeusEx, AC4 , Injustice, BatmanAC, COD Games, even ME3 was not bad. So how is that a failure? Trolls will troll I guess but WiiU is no failure andI believe the best is yet to come. I am holding off on ps4 till 2015 and focusing on WiiU and some of the EOL Ps3 stuff thats coming. XB1 nas nothing for me and I owned xbox and multiple x360 but their exlusives are all multipkayer FPS and racing which really don’t move me. 00EpicGamer00 Oh my god! Another person? With intelligence? This is my lucky day. 😀 Trolls ALWAYS throw the “Wii U is a failure”, “Wii U has no games” card. When, in reality, it’s the complete opposite of what they say. There is no actual evidence that suggests the Wii U is a failure. It’s selling, isn’t it? Sure, the sales may be moving a little slow right now, but that’s not raining on Nintendo’s parade. There’s also TONS of games for the system. I think when people say “Wii U has no games” they mean 1st party titles. But…there’s actually lots. Do we have Mario Kart, the new Zelda, or Smash Bros. yet? No, of course not, but we still have many 1st party titles right now. Titles such as: Nintendoland, Super Mario Bros. U, Super Luigi U, Game and Wario, Pikmin 3, Zelda Wind Waker, Wii Party U, Super Mario 3D world, Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games, Wii Fit U, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. …..Wii U has no games? Mmmkay. Remember! The only thing that makes a game “good” for trolls, are if it has super hyped up realistic graphics. Gudleifson fun fact! people would rather own a playstation 4 with no games, then to buy a wii u… some people just want to see the world burn ;_; David Trail If that is the case ps3 was a failure and look what it went on to do. It’s only a year man. Give it some time! Peter YT Ok how much time e3 2014 or, 2015 nin-10-doughfan are you kidding me? the sign doesn’t look good, because they look great!!! linkzero65 quote”LMFAO THE GIMICK U SUX YOU JUST DONT KNO LMFAO EPIC FAIL” quote by Ps4 fanboy knubz the ratings may be good, but the sales are nowhere close to projections…I truly hope this doesnt spell the end of nintendo as we know it…but it seems they need to make up for lost revenue…would that mean selling out to smart phones?!?! say it aint so Joe!!!! Viktor Araujo X has some chance of being 90+ (Xeno did it, but a lot of JRPGs dodn’t ) Zelda U can be 90+ (It happens almost always) Smash can be 90+ (Both Melee and Brawl did it) Metroid U would have a lot of hype helping, so it could 90+ Bayonetta 2 could do it (Bayo 1 got 90 on xbox360 and 87 on PS3) Mario Kart 8 won’t be 90+, unless it does have a track creation set (the only MK to 90+ was MKDS). Hyrule Warriors won’t (those orochi games never do tha high on meta) Sonic never get 90+, but this Sonic Boom could be a surprise. Nintenjoe82 I think it has a chance of getting about the same. The problem the Wii U faces is similar to the Wii’s in that the gamepad is so divisive that two different reviewers could love and hate the controls of a game. If Nintendo bring one of each of their favourite franchises and throw in a few new surprises along the way, they’ll easily make 10 games worthy of 90%. If Mario Kart gets a 90+ score then it definitely will because MK is the most pointlessly underrated series of games ever. MK64 good not great reviews, still loved to this day more than almost any game from that era MK:DD very good not great reviews, still highly regarded MK:Wii good not great reviews, best online game on Wii marked down for essentially being Mario Kart MerryBlind . I get goose bumps every time I a possible Majora’s Mask remake is mentioned. Please Nintendo, do make it happen. On Wii U. On a side note, I’ve never played the Metroid Prime games, and am looking to get my hands on the Wii Trilogy right now. However, if Retro are indeed working on a new Metroid game, I think it would be great to release a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD for Wii U to get people excited for the new one. InterTreble DK Tropical Freeze deserved 90+, but EDGE, Eurogamers and GameSpot boycotted the game. Shame on them. David Trail I find it funny that I love a lot of 60 to 80% games. Lost World and Zombi U in particular! Dáibhí wotshissurname Realistically, most likely not. Fanboydabbydosiliciously, most definitely yes. Dáibhí wotshissurname This’ll hardly be the death of Nintendo, and will certainly not be their last home console for a long while, but it won’t be selling brilliantly. I’d forecast life sales of 18 million, but that’s just me. I like Wii U 🙂 steveb944 Am I the only person that truly didn’t like Okami? I bought it, have yet to beat it, tried to sell it, got it shipped back, and now it’s just collecting dust. Maybe it’s because I can’t draw for the life of me. It shoulda been a sign for W101 because I also suck on there and haven’t beat it. It’s strange W101 didn’t get a high grade tho. Wish I had known of Xenoblade years ago, I’m not paying $90 for an old game, I’d only do that for FF7. /rant Yes Wii U will receive the same success and surpass the great titles due to the potential of the hardware. Vile-Okami Probably. I haven’t met many people that can’t appreciate the gorgeous art style, innovative gameplay, unique storyline and some of the best parts of Zelda mixed in. Potemkin I believe the Wii U will become a niche product, just like the GameCube. The state of the console will push Nintendo into making great games (few, but great) that only a small portion of the market will enjoy. Nintenderp They gotta announce some good games at E3! 00EpicGamer00 Oh, they will. 🙂 http://treasure.diylol.com/uploads/post/image/195127/thumb_winter-is-coming-meme-generator-prepare-yourselves-zelda-is-coming-ac16a7.jpg Gudleifson world of warcraft should be on the wii u 😀 imagine le possiblets 😀 HyperTallih Nice! Coval83 Wii and U need Games like: Metroid Prime, Zelda(announcement), Wave Race, F-Zero, New mario (real 3d successor, not port from 3ds)… I hope for most of that in upcoming E3 this year… Jeff Peterson That’s kind of sad that Wii only had 11 games that had 90+ ratings, and that’s really 8 if you don’t count RE4 (remake of Gamecube game), Twilight Princess (which was supposed to be/was a Gamecube game), and Okami (remake of PS2 game). Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed my Wii, but it’s surprising to see such a successful console that had so few critically acclaimed games. stealth20k Yes I do Steph While I do not think wiiU will have the same success as the original wii, I do think sales will pick up once More first and third party games are released. Nintendo is in no way “dead” and once they actually start to listen to gamers and what we want things will be much better.
