Developer NetherRealm is busy working on Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighting game slated for release on the Wii U and other consoles in 2013. And they’re looking to use the new Wii U GamePad controller in innovative ways, instead of just presenting it as a gimmick. “We’re going to have some conversation about the Wii U’s unique controller and how to use it in a fighting game that’s not just a gimmick” says NetherRealm’s Ed Boon to The Verge. He commented that the obvious thing would be to simply add the secret moves on the touchscreen where the player would just press them and fire off the moves. He notes that the new controller has to do more than that, and that they’re still working on how to implement the tablet controls. “It’s certainly not something that we’ve cracked yet”, he said. Just show the button combos for the moves for your character. They can animate the buttons so you can see how quickly you need to time them, which are supposed to be pressed at the same time, etc. And show the character animating each move. Great idea. I saw its video demo that the environment/backgraound can be interactive on the fighting game. Or used the second screen to show its character vital characteristic to clean the “HUD” on the tv. Or add additional move using the gyro or touch screen to add moves/super on the character. Developing a game costs a lot of money and therefore you want to have a big target group in order to gain money. You would love to bring your game to many consoles. But with nintendos unique controller your’re in the same problem like with the wii. Creating games for all three consoles is difficult unless you spend time (and money) in developing what you could call 2 “different” games. This is a kind of game (2 player fighting game) where you don’t want asymetrical gameplay. And none wants to use 2 GamePads for this because the game will down from 60fps to 30fps. That said it could be used (in single player mode) for finisher similar to Okami on the Wii. Oh, and any game designer who can not come up with a not gimmickal way to use the GamePad after sitting down for some HOURS or DAYS should change his/her job. Use it for quick access to main menu, save/quit and change character/location 5. Disable touch screen. Can only be used to navigate things in the menu 6. Use it for extras, like changing the suit color of whatever character you’re using 7. Show match up (Show the competition and who your facing next) 8. The real issue here is that people don’t know what the word really means, so they use it inappropriately and get upset when people actually use the word the way it was meant to be used. Motion control is a gimmick. The Wii U touchpad is a gimmick. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it is definitely a device meant to attract attention, publicity, and business. People should stop misusing words. That is all. So next time someone uses the word gimmick, stop getting insulted. The word gimmick doesn’t imply “good” or “bad”, it’s extremely neutral.
