Developer NetherRealm is busy working on Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighting game slated for release on the Wii U and other consoles in 2013. And they’re looking to use the new Wii U GamePad controller in innovative ways, instead of just presenting it as a gimmick. “We’re going to have some conversation about the Wii U’s unique controller and how to use it in a fighting game that’s not just a gimmick” says NetherRealm’s Ed Boon to The Verge. He commented that the obvious thing would be to simply add the secret moves on the touchscreen where the player would just press them and fire off the moves. He notes that the new controller has to do more than that, and that they’re still working on how to implement the tablet controls. “It’s certainly not something that we’ve cracked yet”, he said. Injustice: Gods Among Us is a fighting game set in the DC Comics universe, made by the same people who did Mortal Kombat. For more on the game, check out some Injustice: Gods Among Us screenshots. It’s great to hear that developers are taking the new tablet controller seriously, rather than just a gimmick where they can add the obvious buttons and features. The Wii had a big problem with cheap shovelware games that used the motion controls as a gimmick. Put the logo on the screen and call it a day, unless you have a Pro controller. Daemonrunner Wow, lots of negative responses to this one. Seriously, if it just doesn’t work for this game, it just doesn’t work. I like that the developers are at least TRYING to figure out how to use the Gamepad in a unique way; but I hope they don’t spend too long trying to figure out some way to use it and it causes further delay or worse, total lack of release on the Wii U. Flor I must say, as considerably as I enoyjed reading what you had to say, I couldnt help but lose interest after a while. Its as if you had a good grasp to the topic matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from more than 1 angle. Or maybe you shouldnt generalise so much. Its better if you think about what others may have to say instead of just going for a gut reaction to the topic. Think about adjusting your very own thought process and giving others who may read this the benefit of the doubt. killerdemon562 thank u! leave it blank or have the option to turn it off! save energy on the gamepad (or don’t use it at all and use the pro controller), and all that power the gpu uses to display stuff on the gamepad can be used for making the game look better on TV like 60fps, full 1080p, 3D, better visuals than ps3/360, etc. Christopher But that wouldn’t make much sense. Because if you just turn off the touch-screen or not use it at all, it’s just pointless to even use the GamePad. Maybe if they used it for streaming games onto the screen to play off the TV then yeah but putting a blank screen with the logo of the game on the GamePad screen for no reason doesn’t make sense killerdemon562 that makes more sense lol im to damn focused on the hardware’s power than the gamepad smh Daemonrunner But if the developers don’t allow the Gamepad to be used even minimally (even if the screen just shows games artwork or logo or something), then that would force gamers to buy the Pro controller. SuperShyGuy Say here is a thought for fighting game developers Don’t force yourself to use the monitor if it can’t be used in a non-gimmick manner! The last thing we need is this feature shoe-horned onto games NeptunePirate This is really good to hear. I’ve always liked Ed Boon. swic11 This is great. Developers not wanting the gamepad to become a gimmick, and trying to outdo themselves to make sure its not considered that way. I think that this kind of stuff is up to Nintendo to help out. At least to give them some unique ideas on how to implement it properly/fully. Oxycinna I’m glad… No wait. Hold on. Glad doesn’t even begin to describe the emotional awesomeness this has caused me to know that developers are encouraging the Wii U. I’ve seen articles of people from Microsoft, attempting to delude the ignorant people into believing the Wii U is a simple Xbox360 wannabe. brandon Some developers get it y doesn’t activation lol jat do u mean activision? Bob Jones Because activision is a stubborn ass when it comes to new technologies. Thats why all the new Call of Duty games are near identical. Steventelation The success of the wii u relies heavily on this, if the tablet controller is used in really cool ways(like the wii u zapper) then it will get a lot more people to buy the game and/or the console. Nintendo really left it up to the developers for this one, it might be considered lazy, but the developers are definitely working hard on getting the game pad to work. Man The Wii U is going to bring the golden age of gaming. Making Developers think outside the box to make cool inovative games. Wii U will appeal to all ….. nuff said Nope Nope, the golden age of gaming is already over. (See: N64) Roedburn Anyone else think that one of the characters in the art looks like Batman? Enigmatic It is Batman. Raka It is Batman. Nightwing and Cyborg are also supposedly in it, which makes me think it’s a DC fighting game. AcesHigh Dudes… the article says it’s “a fighting game set in the DC Comics universe”. Please tell me we’re not just looking at the pictures.. Kyle This is a DC fighting game. Its just created by the guys from Mortal Kombat. pure Did you not read the story? Ofcoruse it is. Hi8us For fighting games they can just forget the Upad and push the graphics full force instead of losing resources to the tablet. Wii Uoops! This is important for third parties to keep in mind. I’ve been looking at previews of other games for the Wii U, and they’re not really using the Gamepad to its potential. Wii UoopsSucks Yea true, people have to be more creative and use the gamepad. It changes the way everyone plays. Yoshiwhirlwind If it was a game like street fighter I’d want the option for easy mode with touch buttons or just show all the moves and combos for the character you’re using. Just give me options for what to display on the screen. UGotWongGuy I like this idea. A tutorial/easy mode where the moves are on the gamepad, or one touch macros for complex moves. Maybe even show what you want to do, compared to what you are actually doing. AcesHigh Yoshi, that’s an AWESOME idea. don’t give me a button to execute the move. Just show the button combos for the moves for your character. They can animate the buttons so you can see how quickly you need to time them, which are supposed to be pressed at the same time, etc. And show the character animating each move. Great idea. AKA-Link77 Well if u think about it… all the trolls say that Nintendo’s new big feature is a gimick. Touch screen: gimick, Double screen: gimick, Motion controlls: gimick, 3D: gimick, now they are saying touch screens on the controller is a gimick! Then a few months after [its success] Sony, Microsoft and other companies copy it! And they’ve used “Gimick” so many times its lost ALL meaning! -__- Biggy N Suggestion: Why not try NFC to add more character or add more thing to throw on the game. I saw its video demo that the environment/backgraound can be interactive on the fighting game. Like pushing a button that do something on the background and do more dame like electric shock (from the demo video). Or used the second screen to show its character vital characteristic to clean the “HUD” on the tv. Or add additional move using the gyro or touch screen to add moves/super on the character. Like Batman and superman to use the gyro and/or scan the behind the wall or similar. The Beeshnu Nintendo should ban or games on thier consoles that uses them as gimmicks The Beeshnu It was a joke guys calm down lol Gameflow I hope the wii u will bring the “golden age of gaming” 🙂 I think every Gamedesign should be more than excited to have such a unique “toy” to create unique and new games… but unfortunatelly you still have to sell software and there is imo the biggest problem. Developing a game costs a lot of money and therefore you want to have a big target group in order to gain money. You would love to bring your game to many consoles. But with nintendos unique controller your’re in the same problem like with the wii. Creating games for all three consoles is difficult unless you spend time (and money) in developing what you could call 2 “different” games. I hope the wii u sells good enough to create a big appeal for developers… PS: I am so happy that many developers seem really excited with the console…and not beeing so “afraid of change” like many so called “hard core games” out there 🙂 Marmor The touchscreen should simply not put to use. This is a kind of game (2 player fighting game) where you don’t want asymetrical gameplay. And none wants to use 2 GamePads for this because the game will down from 60fps to 30fps. That said it could be used (in single player mode) for finisher similar to Okami on the Wii. Oh, and any game designer who can not come up with a not gimmickal way to use the GamePad after sitting down for some HOURS or DAYS should change his/her job. They are getting PAID to do such things … john use the screen to dreesup the characters before fighting GalaxyWaffles 10 Easy Solutions: 1. Use it for a map of the area (Tells you all the interactive things in the area) 2. Combo list 3. Use it to pull of COMPLEX super moves 4. Use it for quick access to main menu, save/quit and change character/location 5. Disable touch screen. Can only be used to navigate things in the menu 6. Use it for extras, like changing the suit color of whatever character you’re using 7. Show match up (Show the competition and who your facing next) 8. Disable touch screen period. it’s optional so whatever. 9. Easy access to button configurations, settings etc.. 10. Quick adjustment to difficulty settings, on screen button to adjust shading and lighting, Add toggle option for easy on screen touch moves (using touch screen to perform combos etc..) fedster well one thing they can do that would b really cool, is that one the touchscreen they can display another camera angle… like how they did in super paper mario or perhaps another angle that is diagnol to that TheBoldman67 I like that there trying, I’m about to email Activision ways they could use The tablet for black ops 2. Since they’re to dumb ass to realise themselves LIesa Anna Posted on Wish I could have gone with you guys. I always want to look back at Hunter and then I aslmot fall over. Typical me LOVE these pictures of the ride. dave Look the bottom line is developers need new tech like this what the hell are they going to do to progress there games just keep putting out the same shit every game (cod) Some of these dev should be more gratefull that nintendo is keeping them imployed bf and cod will not be able substain the gaming market deSSy2724 I dont see a problem here… if u cant take advantage of the new Wii U controller, then use the Wii U Pro controller or Wii mote controller…. whats the problem? Shankovich Thank you! The public needs to see this; devs mostly already know this!! Remember the Wii’s controls were used more “as gimmicks” because, well…that’s what happens when a dev is lazy, but it also seems to be inherent in motion controls. This is a touch screen on a control pad, much different, so you can’t make a comparison. It unlocks many doors motion controls will never be able to. Rob Just a thought, why not use the gamepad to display your set list of moves? You can’t really implemant anything spectacular to use for a fighting game, or at least something totally game changing. I’m not interested in this game at all, but I’m curious on what developers might be able to do with the gamepad. XENAJA i said this ones that wii u game pad is not for fighting games its for rts, mmo, shooting games and rpg if they do this you will see super smash bros 4 will use this to it may be bad or good. could work ? joe I think the Wii U pad /screen can be very helpful, and is a cool idea…IF Nintendo announced “No More Motion Control.” I would then say, “it has the potential to be the greatest controller ever.” Sorry, but After Wii, I say “86 the motion controls” Vylsith gimmick – “A trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.” The Wii U controller is by definition a gimmick. The real issue here is that people don’t know what the word really means, so they use it inappropriately and get upset when people actually use the word the way it was meant to be used. Motion control is a gimmick. The Wii U touchpad is a gimmick. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it is definitely a device meant to attract attention, publicity, and business. People should stop misusing words. That is all. So next time someone uses the word gimmick, stop getting insulted. The word gimmick doesn’t imply “good” or “bad”, it’s extremely neutral.
