As we move forward into the holiday season, Nintendo wants to clear up the confusion that’s surrounding the Wii, Wii Mini, and the Wii U. We’ve already seen this chart earlier this year to help people discern the difference between the Wii and the Wii U, when Nintendo first started acknowledging that consumers were having trouble.

Now with the holiday season coming and Nintendo releasing a brand new Wii Mini SKU in the United States, this same flyer is being circulated to retailers to help consumers know the difference between the two systems.

local_offer    Nintendo  wii u  wii u comparison chart
  • Really hope retailers actually post this somewhere visible to consumers. It could clear up a lot of the confusion of having 2 Wii SKUs still on shelves next to the WiiU.

Everyone wants the console with the most checkmarks, after all. That’s a fact.

  • victor

The big difference is the 1080p hd and wii u games.

    • AND TV-OFF play

      • C4

And price… not to Wii U’s advantage though.

Edit: And they didn’t mention it 😀

      • Rinslowe

        And Miiverse…

    • Magnus Eriksson

Actually its just the pad. Wii U is almost excactly the same thing as a Wii with a Upad. It might have a bit more modern architecture that upscales from 480p to 1080p, but it still doesnt have as much shaders as PS3 or XB360. So technically its just a Wii with some smart phone technology. Its highly likely that Nintendo does this to get a foot in the door for developing on smart phones. That way they can use other platforms and doesnt have to make their own just to play games. 🙂

      • Alejandro A

The Wii u is more powerful than both of those systems. Its capable of directx 11 effects and has more shaders. Plus it has a gpgpu. Its way more than just an upgraded Wii. I know because I own both.

The Wii u doesn’t upscale 480p to 1080p. It has games like Ray man and Bayonetta 2 that are rendered in native 1080p and run 60 fps. No way a Wii could do that.

  • re-releases, people, don’t say they’re a year late, like in Nintendolife.
they do this a long time a go.

  • This needs to be freaking PLASTERED everywhere. Wal Mart, Target, EVERYWHERE.

    • yea

    • Noah Hood

Yeah it does. And Nintendo needs to make one comparing the Wii U, Wii, and Wii Mini. Why Nintendo? Why Wii Mini? Why would you add to the confusion?

    • bizzy gie

      ESPECIALLY Target.

      • yeah, seriously target XD

        • hahahero

          much target

          • cement

            target much?

          • hahahero

            such target. wow. so confusion.

          • Ony

          • cement

            Confusion so such Target. WOW!

          • Connor Devlin

            wow. such store.

    • BIG Franky

they are in the Target display at the location near my house and have been for many months….

      • fireheartis1

If that’s true then the Target advertising team really sucks lol.

    • Magnus Eriksson

I think they are overcomplicating. They should just say that its a new system. But make commercials for it in TV, magazines and the like.

Bte. Was at Gamestop today. They have removed the Wii U monter and put up an XBox360 monter instead. And all Wii U games was hidden in a corner. It looks like no one is interested to market the product either.

    • Magnus Eriksson
    • thejam216

      ESPECIALLY people’s faces

  • Nathan Verbois

It should help. Much of marketing is based around “impressions” which is based on psychology. Notice how there are big check marks for the Wii U column and there are only small dots or bullets for the Wii column. Marketers know most people will be drawn to look at the left side, and almost completely ignore the right side due to this difference. Even if people don’t pay too close attention to what the Wii U does that the Wii doesn’t, they’ll certainly remember that it does a lot more than the Wii and seems like the better deal despite the higher price tag. They’ll gather that “impression” upon seeing this list, even if they’re not buying hardware at the time, and it will be subtly reinforced in their subconscious every time they see it.

  • shaw98

Guys, there are awesome new trailers of super mario 3d world from Japan!!!

    • Gabe Hoffman

Looks like Bowser’s Coney Island Disco Palace made into the game.

      • The Clockwork Being

Bowser didn’t want this revealed. Mario arrived here by accident.

    • palomino blue

      This game looks just fantastic.

    • Mario

I have no words to describe this.

    • Will (ishigum)

      I drooled a bit.

    • starwars360

      I CANNOT WAIT!!!! So exciting!!!

  • Ace

At least they are trying to do something, but I feel like they wouldn’t have had this problem if they would have marketed the Wii U correctly in the first place.

    • shaw98

      Better late then never.

      • Ace

Don’t get me wrong I agree, but it is just frustrating that they are still doing this. I don’t understand why they aren’t spending more money on marketing the heck out of it that’s all. Everywhere I look and on every tv station I watch I see PS4 and Xbone stuff. I have seen 1 Wii U commercial and that was the day after it came out.

        • shaw98

I agree, they did good with pikmin, but they need to go all out. They have plenty of money.

          • Ace

Exactly. Spend the dough and get it out there. Commercials, sponsors, ads, bilboards etc.

          • Ace

That video of the Japanese commercials you posted is cool. November 22nd can’t come soon enough!

  • Noah Hood

Another nice improvement to the Wii U that Nintendo doesn’t mention in the comparison chart is the ability to download games and DLC in the background so you can still do other things on your Wii U. It’s a small difference but I appreciate it. Multitasking in general is better on the Wii U. It was non-existent on the Wii.

  • shaw98

Nintendo needs to advertise the wii u like crazy. They need to make a 3d world bundle and I bet it would make the system fly off shelves.

  • Adam Porter

didn’t they have this ages ago, i feel like ive seen this before

    • Adam Porter

derp, it says in article fair enough sorry

  • BIG Franky

I don’t think these ever went anywhere…. they’re still at the Target, Walmart, and Toys R US around me….. if anything, I’m guessing they’ll update to replace the wii with the wii mini and show that doesn’t have online access, etc…

    • Rinslowe

Exactly, they do need to retire the Wii and promote the Wii mini…

That will help with identifying Wii U more clearly for those people outside of the gaming scene…

  • Hulkamania

Nintendo really needs to find a way to show everyone how the Miiverse works because its truly an awesome function and just stating it as a feature does not justify what it does.

  • John Andalora

Because it worked so well the first time…
It’s a shame that the past Nintendo console is in competition with the current Nintendo console.

    • Of course, how did it not work. Simple, they only released the poster during PAX East. Now that retailers are getting them, they can just hang them up on the front window and call it a day.

      • John Andalora

I actually have seen these in stores like Best Buy and GameStop before. I remember seeing them around near E3, when Nintendo wanted to demonstrate their product to others.
They were in those pamphlets that people could take for free if they were interested.
Hopefully THIS time it will work.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Agree! This is just desperation. I read it as they dont have stuff to carry the console with. No great titles. Nothing new to support it with. Heck! Even Virtual console is unsupported. Everything with Wii U is a huge fai. From top to bottom.

      • Don’t reply to him, that’s not at all what he was trying to say. And 3D World isn’t great? Did you not see the sales boost in Japan?

        • Zuxs13

3D world had nothing to do with the sales boost in Japan. That was from the price drop and bundles with Mario Bros U and Wii Party U in them.

        • Magnus Eriksson

Ah, dont tell me what to do. 🙂

    • Rinslowe

I’m not defending the Wii U/ Wii confusion issue.

But your comment is like stating the obvious IMO.
All consoles are in competition with each other.
This holiday season for eg. is going to see current gen very much in competition with their successors.
It’s pretty much always been that way. And rightly so, current gen are great value options for those new to gaming. Very competitive price points, massive library of discounted titles and continued support….

*Nintendo needs to retire the Wii because it is not well supported if at all, it is only helping to add to the confusion issue and the Wii U is 100% backward compatible.

      • John Andalora

        Here’s the difference:
When PS4 and Xbox One release, chances are Sony and Microsoft aren’t going to re-release the PS3 super slim or Xbox 360 slim with LittleBigPlanet or Halo 4 during the holiday season. Yes, they are going to have developers this holiday making games for both consoles, but that’s hardly “competing with one another” like re-introducing your old console that people are already confused about in a new bundle.

        • Rinslowe

“Here’s the difference:When PS4 and Xbox One release, chances are Sony and Microsoft aren’t going to re-release the PS3 super slim or Xbox 360 slim”

The only real difference being “if they did” release super slim, lol. That would be what? Rev 3 or 4?

“Yes, they are going to have developers this holiday making games for both consoles, but that’s hardly “competing with one another”
What? oh John, that was awesome…
It’s so much more than that though isn’t it…
Try library – sheer no’ of available titles, price point!!!
Way to pick the least important aspect and make a thing of it. lol

          • John Andalora

“The only real difference being “if they did” release super slim, lol. That would be what? Rev 3 or 4?”

I wouldn’t honestly know. But as we can both see, the idea would just be silly. In fact, some might dare say it’s stupid.

“Try library – sheer no’ of available titles, price point!!! ”

            A) Oh yeah, because the Wii U had an amazing library of games at launch. No ports or cheap remakes there. All brand new and amazing! What innovation!

            B) The argument was about consoles being in competition with each other. I think the big elephant in the room is the fact that Nintendo is re-introducing their old console in a new bundle for the holidays. It’s hurting the Wii U, confusing the consumer, and only pushing more and more people into buying the old over the new.

The Current Generation games and Next Gen transition is very normal for consoles. It’s meant to get people who already have the old consoles to buy the new games, and give them time to transition without forcing them into the new console.
The releasing last gen consoles when trying to sell the next gen consoles scheme doesn’t work. There’s gotta be a point when you focus on the new one. IF you focus too much on the old, people will just keep the old.

          • Rinslowe

There you go again, off on a tangent. Admittedly that did annoy me in the beginning. Now though, not really…

“I wouldn’t honestly know. But as we can both see, the idea would just be silly. In fact, some might dare say it’s stupid.”
That was the point I was making. 🙂

“”Try library – sheer no’ of available titles, price point!!! ”

This comment was obviously in regards to PS3 and 360 being in direct competition with their successors as I said. And to imply otherwise ie; they are not in direct competition is not correct at all, as they very much are and will be…

Everything else is your own argument…

  • TheKingJoseph

lmao desperate much RIP wii u

    • Then why are you on a site called “Wii U Daily”?

      • Magnus Eriksson

Dont you think its a desperate move? They tried this before, it didnt work. Why not make commercials in TV instead of things like this?

        • Rinslowe

          You have a point.

But I think @Twintails was referring to the “RIP wii u” part of the comment…
Which is an asinine statement really.

          • Magnus Eriksson

If they do continue with things like that im afraid he is right, except for the lmao-part

      • Rinslowe

  • A SNES Day Off

Nintendo could clear up confusion by, oh, let’s see… retiring the original Wii!

    • Brandon Gardner

I agree releasing the Wii mini had to be the most stupidest idea ever

      • Mario

      • Magnus Eriksson

What about the Wii U then?

  • Carlos Coronado

why there is a dot next they should put a x

  • Mj78

Wow. How many straws would nintendo like to clutch at?

  • It would’ve been bad if they didn’t include pictures.. I could just see more confusion coming out of this with people still saying ‘it’s an add on!’ To clear up confusion Nintendo could just release a Tv Ad ‘Here is Nintendo’s brand new console’ At the moment, I see about 2 or 3 3DS adverts promoting the handheld, promoting the 2DS and promoting Pokemon X and Y. I think we can all agree that Nintendo have marketed the 2DS a lot better than the Wii U and to be honest, the 2DS would seem like something that is more confusing to the average consumer. It would do Nintendo a lot of good if they just release a new advert for the Wii U, Sure it will cost them money but in the long run it will pay off. It’s better than having this lack of console awareness. I remember there being a Windwaker HD ad at some point but that advert wasn’t nearly shown as much as the 3 3DS adverts. I’d like to see Nintendo do something about this soon, It’s starting to feel a little lonely on certain Wii U multiplayer games. I’d be nice to see Nintendo prove it’s disbelievers wrong, especially Pachter.

  • flovv

Why didn’t (or still don’t they) call it “Wii u (Wii 2)” on the box at least, so people understand?
Have been thinking and saying this since last winter.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Wii Ultra or just “the Ultra”. They could rebrand it. Use the same logo and make it clearer that its a new console.

      • flovv

Not a bad idea, very good indeed actually !!
“Wii Ultra” indeed, though I still think the “Wii 2” should be there somewhere, on the box at least.
I bought Wind Waker yesterday in a big store (think it is the biggest in this kinda small country), where the guy behind a desk though that the Wii U just was a Wii with a tablet … and he works in the electrics department, so sad!!

BTW, Magnus, guessing from your name we live in the same country and the store was Gekås 😉

    • JohnBgon

      Wii 64 had my vote

  • Johnny Be Me

I’ve seen these at Best Buy for months now…

  • Daniel Gonzalez

Here’s an idea Nintendo. How about uhm….advertising this on TV?

    • NatT96™

  • Daldrakar

This is really old news I saw this about 6 months ago.

  • Felix

this is fake and nintendo doesnt made this (or they did 1 year ago) because the basic set doesnt exist anymore. so i doubt they will post this.

  • Pat B

    Nintendo TVii *

    *Not In Australia…. Sunsuhbitches

  • DragonSilths

But with the Wii Mini also being added to the mix that will confuse more people. Cause it doesn’t even do online so that literally only just plays Wii games lol.

  • companyoflosers

heres an idea, dump support and stop all production and distribution of the wii. drop it like a turd like they did when they stopped support of the gamecube (not that the gamecube was bad). this way when dear old grandma goes to buy that wii u thingy little timmy has been mentioning, her lack of basic knowledge on anything game related wont matter, there wont be any original wiis there for her to confuse it with! plus its about time nintendo stopped being their own competition. you dont release a new iteration of your old console AFTER you release the next gen console. its bad business and makes developers think you arent fully confident or invested enough in your new console to the point where you wouldnt need to rely on an old console to help sales get by. the fact is if the wii was dropped and wii u was the only nintendo console commercially available, it would be doing alot better right now.

  • blindtiger

The chart isn’t that great… I wish they made a less confusing one. The average consumer doesn’t even know what half of those features are. They need something way more obvious. If the buyer is too dumb to know it’s a completely different system they are too dumb to understand that chart…

  • Nintimdo

I remember when these were put up at e3 and gaming websites of course had to put that negative spin on the article ‘Nintendo advertises against itself with bizzare wii U/wii comparison poster’. They find ways to make every decision a bad thing.

  • Jeovany

    This need to be EVERYWHERE

  • Duane Grondziak

Not trying to be a troll, but it seems that most of the ‘new’ here is pulled from reddit/r/wiiu. If anyone here is looking NEW information about the WiiU, do yourself a favor and head over to reddit.

  • Jeovany

It’s missing the line for “Plays Gamecube Games” 🙂

  • SeattleSeahawks001 .

The confusion comes because it’s called the WII u.. If they called it something completely different they would not have this problem.

  • The True Gamer

i still think a wii u slim version needs to be announced called the Wii 2. eliminate confusion for all those uninformed.

    • NatT96™

      Who disliked you? Good Idea.

  • jlenoconel

Call it the Nintendo U. Simples.

  • Rinslowe

We should probably consider retail more in this discussion, lol…

  • fireheartis1

The sad thing is when we got this at work the last time it was only out for a week. How the heck is that long enough to clear up the confusion. I’m going to have to make sure the associates understand that they need to keep it out longer. Not sure how I’m going to do that since I’m not directly over Electronics, but I’m going to do my best to get the word out.

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

    Welll, pretty late

    • NatT96™

They should have had 2 kiosk present in stores with this chart right in the middle….last year.
      Pretty late.
There is going to be even more confusion with the Wii Mini. They should have named it differently.

  • DOLBYdigital

This isn’t even correct though? They should update this to show removal of 8gb version and add a column for the mini etc…

    • NatT96™

There’s going to be a lot of confusion this holiday season.

  • Pucker

Stop selling the Wii. Then people will only be able to buy a Wii U. Enough said.
