Google has finally made Street View available for Wii U owners in Japan. The app can be downloaded in the Nintendo eShop for free and works on both the GamePad and the television. The GamePad shows a full 360 degree view of the world’s streets and while moving the GamePad, users can view different areas of the street they’ve chosen. When looking at Street View on the GamePad, the position on the map will show on the television.

Plans were originally to launch Street View in January, but delays occurred which made this unfeasible. When the feature was originally announced in December Nintendo stated they would charge a fee for the feature. It is now available for free through May, in order to compensate for the later than normal launch.

Nintendo has not stated when the service will be available in other markets such as North America and Europe, but it’s heartening to see the service finally launch in Nintendo’s native country.

To the left you can see Nintendo president Satoru Iwata strapped with the Street View camera designed for getting into the many narrow streets that Japan offers.

How do you feel about Wii Street U? Are you excited for the feature to come to your area? Let us know in the comments.

I always wondered how they made those street views. I think the app will be interesting for sure. I’ll try it when it’s free at least.
