For Nintendo fans who rabidly collect Club Nintendo coins on every purchase, the current situation with the Wii Shop on Wii U may give you pause to purchasing old games on your new system. Buying WiiWare or Virtual Console games through the Wii U’s Wii Mode doesn’t generate the coin value of those purchases.

There is currently no way to link your Club Nintendo account to the virtual Wii within the Wii U, so any coins generated through purchases are lost. I learned this the hard way when I went to purchase some of my favorite Super Nintendo games on my new console. For those of you who still have the Wii, you can still buy whatever you’d like on it, get the coins, and then transfer the data to the Wii U. That’s a hassle no one should have to go through, so hopefully Nintendo rectifies this mistake in a future update.

Nintendo must be full of wankers…they dont ever get shit right

  • Really old news, guys…

Just give me Virtual Console for the Wii U with off-TV play and I’m happy.

  • Threinfhir

What SNES game did you purchase, Ashley?

    • Super Ghouls n’ Ghosts. It’s my favorite platformer on the SNES. 🙂

      • PKUltima

Definitely the hardest platformer I have ever played on the SNES:)

  • No surprise, because these Titles are no actual Wii U Content. 3DS Download also don’t give you Points, even with a linked Club Nintendo Account.

    • Wha?  I definitely got coins for my 3ds eShop downloads, unless you’re talking about the Virtual Console…

I’m just going to wait until they get it right. I want my Wii games/saves playable/usable from the WiiU menu just like on my 3DS with dsiware titles. They did it right on 3DS, I don’t see why they can’t do the same for WiiU.

Glad I kept my Wii, cause that’s what I’ll use if I need a Wii Virtual Console or WiiWare game now that I’ve read this report.

Man, I’m not buying jack from the Wii mode Virtual Console. I’m lucky my existing VC games even survived the transfer. Hurry up with that Wii U Virtual Console, Nintendo. Maybe this time we’ll get to play SNES Super FX games like Star Fox and Yoshi’s Island. Oh, and Super Metroid on the GamePad FTW!

  • i officially quit the wii u. so much crap with it just like the 3ds. nothing will ever be better then just buying a laptop. you dont even have to buy games with a laptop, so that alone will save you like $300 if you will only buy like 5 wii u games your entire lifetime.

Nintendo needs a subscription service so all the titles are available.  I can’t imagine that wouldn’t bring more gross sales than per title.
