Nov 6th, 2013

Sales of Japanese games and systems for last week are now available and the Wii U saw a surprising jump to second best selling console thanks to the release of Wii Party U. Wii U sales jumped up to nearly 39k versus the mere 2k in the last week. This can be attributed to the special Wii U bundle that comes with Wii Party U, New Super Mario Bros. U, a Wii remote plus and a code for Wii Karaoke U.

These are the sort of numbers we want to start seeing for Wii U, but it’s surprising to see that they’re being brought by Wii Party U. Have you picked it up yet? Remember, the boxed copy of the game comes with a Wii Remote and a new stand for the GamePad.

Really? And people on YouTube were telling me that no one wanted this game.

Honestly, I didn’t know it would have this much of an effect.

    • RockieOllie

Same. I guess it comes with the territory i guess. Kinda like how Monster Hunter does so well in Japan, meanwhile CoD and GTA sell gangbusters here.

Still not interested in this game tbh. But its good to see something helping out Wii U sales

    • mrjoedawgbrother

The internet poops on everything. That’s why we should go try things for ourselves.

But enough of that. Anyone who points me to the disc only version (I already have 4 remotes) will be the champion of the day. Thanks!

    • Mr Down Vote

Your comment is factual. Youtube does not tell people information.

      • Jon

        You’re back!

Oh wait, you are just a phony, you are not the real Mr. Downvote. He was much cooler. He did his downvotes with grace.

        • Majora’s Mask

    • Ernie Sanguyo

One thing for sure why people bought this. It’s the wii remote plus. It’s really a good deal specially for the people that still needs more controller.

    • Michael DeVore

I’m not sure if this is believable. I think it could be a correlation vs causation argument. For example, I purchased Wii Party U, but I did not purchase it because I really wanted the game. I purchased it because I found out that some of the dance, and rock climbing games in Wii Fit U needed a second Wii Motion control, and I only had 1. Wii Party U gave me a second and a cheap game. Also Wii Fit U was released in Japan on Oct 31st and Party U on the 31st so this could be Wii Fit U driving Wii U sales, and Wii Fit U driving Wii Party U sales.

    • Derk

I think the sales jump may have been due to Wii Fit U just as Iwata had stated. A game being #6 on the list doesn’t explain why the console was #2.

      • pedro rosado

hum…. not everyone bought the wii party u bundle, besides, it doesnt have to be seconde of the games list since each console doesnt have only one game, but yeah, it probably did help

    • Nintedward

Wiiu sales have been WAY down in the last 3 weeks in Japan, and as usual everyone was hitting dat panic button XD.
What they didn’t know was that Wiiu sales were dwindling because people were waiting for this bundle. Wiiu sales will be strong all the way through the end of the year in Japan.

I predict Wiiu will hit about 6M by December 31st, which really isn’t too shabby for its first year! Would 10M be better like the Wii? sure! But we’ll take 6 ๐Ÿ˜›
I mean who cares if the Wiiu only sells like the N64 more or less? I don’t! I just want Nintendo to carry on…

      • Keyser

Uh, Wii U sales have been down in the last year lol. But in all seriousness, if this is significantly impacting sales, just wait until 3D World comes out. Now THAT will boost sales!

        • victor

If I did not own a Wii U that would have been the game that sold the deal too me.

          • Majora’s Mask

seriously? MARIO ? they dont even had a good game out ww hd is the highest ranking wii u game and its only a remake

        • Josiah Parsons

Actually, the best sales booster will be SSBros. I know tons of people who are waiting to buy for that game to come out. Lots of people bought Wiis for Brawl, and I’m thinking it will happen again.

          • Krzysztof

It will. But for majority, I recon, MK8 will be the biggest booster of them all.

          • Rinslowe

I think every title mentioned is going to have a positive impact on sales…

          • Josiah Parsons

            I know that I really like MK8, but I don’t know about everyone else…

        • Nintedward

I said ”WAY down” cus its been at like 2500 a week in japan as opposed to a more normal 5-10k+

      • The Clockwork Being

Exactly! I don’t understand the fanboys and haters that predict the Wii U will stay at 4 millions at the end of this year. But it is understandable. They are same fanboys that predict the PS4 and X1 will sell 8 millions at launch.

        • Yousif Alromaithi

As if it will happen lol.

    • Ugslick

Let’s see how long this level of sales is sustained for.

  • Teves153

Wow I guess that’s the power of party games. Might have to see what the fuss is about

    • Earthworm Jim

This should show people enough to get them to understand why Nintendo doesn’t create more Online Multi-player games. They cater to the taste of the Japanese gamer. They seem to love games where you have to gather in a room together to play. This forces you to interact directly with who you are playing with. That said, I really hope that we get some online competitive games from the big N. I can’t imagine what kind of MMORPG or FP-Anything they could come up with.

  • Jon

That’s a sweet increase and that’s only Japan ๐Ÿ˜€ Come the end of the month, we should see another ๐Ÿ™‚

It actually beat of the 3DS… well, the normal one. ๐Ÿ˜›

I wonder if the Wii fit thing also helped with this. I thought Wii fit was pretty big in japan as well.

    • Cesar Barroso

well, wii fit meter sold out at amazon in 2 days.

  • mar laguna

ITS a good raise for wii u we see more sales but we need more for we could ge more and more games but this is a good job ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Jack5221

Bought Wii Party U and I love it. Played it with my friends last night and we had a great time.

    • Dr. Capone

      • Jack5221

Yes, we know you’re a troll. Be gone with you.

        • Dr. Capone

Hey, just because I am ugly, live under a bridge and carry a club, doesn’t make me a troll. They have feelings too.

  • Ony

    Hell yes.

  • Michaeljbrady

I bought this game the day it came out, i did not play the first but i assumed it was alot like mario party. While not exactly like mario party it definitely shares some characteristics. Most of the games are very rudimentary but its quite addicting and i’ve had alot of fun playing with my girl friend, i find that if you put the difficulty up on the computers it becomes a nice challenge. The packed in Wii Remote was for sure a nice touch as well. Recommended pick-up if your into games that everyone can play and enjoy.

  • Thomas Fitzgibbon

I’m actually really surprised this of all titles has caused Wii U sales to skyrocket. It’s barely on many European and North American gamers radar, even though it does look quite fun despite a middling reception. Plus a free Wii Remote Plus is a hard offer to turn down. Right, on to Amazon I go.

    • Cesar Barroso

its been selling relatively well on Europe and America, around 25-30k for the last 3 weeks after Wind Waker release.

      • Thomas Fitzgibbon

        That’s good to hear ๐Ÿ™‚

    • oontz

Yeah I think it’s the bundle that is selling so well. That’s a great deal.

  • Ernie Sanguyo

So if Wii party U sales good amout then I bet Super mario 3d world will be more for sure. I still hope they keep advertising it on TV. Ads on famous TV series, NFL or Shows since not everyone watches TV anymore.

  • Fifi Larns

This is good and surprising news Nintendo ๐Ÿ˜€ ! I’m glad that the sales are fantastic right now !

  • Simon Stevens

Great bit of news, lets hope it keeps up ^^

    • Dr. Capone

      • Simon Stevens

        Hmm how so?

        • Andrew Chambers

Maybe he was talking about himself?

        • Dr. Capone

          Because Obama destroyed the US

          • Simon Stevens

lol convincing argument, I’m a troll.

          • Andrew Chambers

Wow, three comments into your new account and you’re already hard at work not making sense. What was your last account? NintendodreamcastU? Knowledgeiswhatsup? Leothelion?

          • Dr. Capone

I think it was Jesus Bin Ladin Obama

          • Simon Stevens

            Or Osama yomomma Obama

          • Dr. Capone

            he’s my dad ๐Ÿ™‚

          • Simon Stevens

he’e my dad too! ZOMG!!!!! Bros before po’s

          • Obama

It is not destroyed yet. That is in the budget for next year!

  • Rinslowe

Should be a great game for the family. But about the figures, we all know the Japanese have an interesting taste, lol.

    Good news overall.

  • slade6alpha

    Them Japanese casuals…

    • Cesar Barroso

them japanese enjoining video games instead of arguing about them…

  • John Andalora

Glad people are going out and getting more Wii Us. Hopefully this pattern will continue and will give people more of a reason to develop for it.

  • tom

Splendid! I think Mario 3d World will push sales even further worldwide!

  • The last Chozo

Is it actualy because of wii party U? Did they check for any other annoicements? Because this is REALLY surprising. Though it probably won’t do the same in the west.

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

OMG ! That’s Japan. I doubt we see such a pronounced effect here, but it’s nice ๐Ÿ™‚

  • jjbredesen

Dam this is great news if a game like wii party U can generat this many sales, then i cant wait to see how many sales 3D world will generat 100K the first week? and then we have MK8… and if the sales are not high enough after that. well then we have smash bros. It will be like the 3DS it was “failing” and everyone was saying its the end bla.bla.bla and then the price droped and the games came. The result? Best selling system of this period! Nintendo are using a very similar tactic with the Wii U and i think it is starting to work!

  • LevenThumps

Does anyone know what the numbers in parenthesis mean for software and hardware sales? I’m thinking they’re worldwide sales, but can someone confirm this?

EDIT: Now that I look at it, I think it’s the previous week’s sales, especially since the WiiU number is lower in parenthesis.

    • Rob’s Gameroom

They are the previous week’s sales.

      • LevenThumps

Thanks. I thought it was that, but wasn’t sure.

  • Zuxs13

Wind Waker does nothing in Japan but Wii Party U makes it sore to 38k lol

    • oontz

it’s the bundle, not JUST the game.

  • Germany

I Germany Hereby Declare that the Xbone Sucks

    oh wait, wrong site

    Yeah, go Wii U!

    • Deadpool U

Didn’t your Ebay do that a few months ago?

  • Agent721

This game is sui much fun with friends…it’s great for a party!!!

  • Zuxs13

Ashley, didn’t the price cut just take place in Japan too?

  • Mario

  • starwars360

Good news about Wii U got better sales in Japan. Microsoft will have problems with Xbox One sales by next year in Japan and Microsoft not release Xbox One during this month like some of other countries got because Xbox One will hits into stores in Japan by March 2014. So seem so many people had decided own Wii U more now and joins the PS4 club when PS4 hits the stores in February 2014. Which mean we will see eventually repeat like current generations did with Wii and PS3 is dominated high sales for consoles in Japan. So we expect Wii U and PS4 is same familiar compare to current generations. ๐Ÿ™‚

I guess PS4 and Wii U will continue like current generation sales were better for consoles in Japan. Xbox One will be another weak sales like 360 had in Japan. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Cesar Barroso

ohh, i was forgiving that Wii U will have the end of the years for themselves. PS4 is releasing on february. There will be a chance for people to jump in Super Mario 3D World.

      • starwars360

Thanks. I had edit and change bit. I forget Sony had confirmed Japan will have PS4 3 months after other countries got. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Maybe it wasn’t Wii Party U. Maybe it was the bundle itself.

Think about it… the games in the bundle are a 2D Mario sidescroller for the big Mario fans and two different types of party game experiences. It didn’t just hit one type of gamer, it was appealing to many different kinds of people. Cross-demographic appeal is what the Wii U needs.

  • sweet :3

Also, look at the top lineup for Japan, then US… Really wish our tastes here in the US were different, as I dont want “Shoot up everyone and their mother 13” to keep dominating sales -.-

  • I think it is the bundling in general using game titles people recognize. There are reports of the Super Mario Bros. U + Super Luigi U bundle selling out everywhere like stores like Target and Gamestop.

  • Googs

Dat near 40k sales number. That’s more what we’d like to see :)! Great to see the console sales climb again!

  • TULFich

Well is very known for japanese people to have more casual tastes (unstressful games like karaoke and so), so Iยดm happy to see the Wii U doing great over there ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Earthworm Jim

Can I be in Smash Brothers this time? Please??

  • InterTreble

Bad day for haters… Really bad day… And it’s only the beginning….

  • Earthworm Jim

Nintendo just needs to announce that Retro is working on a game titled Bounty. This will be a game set in the same Universe as the Metroid series. Online Multiplayer galore. Would be ok with me if it is a FPS/Adventure/Discovery game, or an MMORPG.

  • Yousif Alromaithi

You remember fans of Wii U daily about two weeks ago I stated sony made a mistake skipping ps4 on Japan and I was right since by my logic Nintendo Wii U just beat ps3. That is the price for thinking logically.

    • oontz

How did sony make a mistake? Last time I checked North America was the BIGGEST gaming market. Sony isn’t stupid, they know where they make their money.

      • Yousif Alromaithi

That’s why the ps3 did not destroy wii while the ps2 managed to beat the game cube because it focuses on the east. Ps2 was something the ps3 could never be achieve greatness.

        • oontz

Ummmm, maybe it also had to do with actual hardware price and not region. Since the PS2 was $299… and the PS3 was $599.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Say that to 3ds which both the vita had the same price. Price does no matter if a console delivers what the consumer wants:

          • oontz

Your logic makes no sense at all. Really.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Believe what you believe one day you will find out.

          • oontz

It’s not what I believe, it’s basic business and economics.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Then go apply for business school. As if you don’t know the answer for that question. I have over one million reason to show my argument.

          • oontz

“That’s why the ps3 did not destroy wii”

Hmmm, wii sold for $249usd vs. Ps3 sold for $599usd… yeah I really wonder why the wii sold more units. It couldn’t have anything to with economics since one was $350usd cheaper than the other. LOL, Idiot.

  • e_rocket

Hope it keeps this wayโ€ฆ The game looks really good, I want to get it to play with the family during holidays, so much fun is waiting!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • bizzy gie

    Wiin U

  • TheKingJoseph

So selling ~38k software and hardware is now great? lmao this crappy system had a price cut, bundled and it still can’t break 50k in Japan lol. It still won’t hit 100k a week worldwide even after price cuts and bundling lol RIP wii u

  • verymetal

See what happens when quality 1st party games are actually released? Imagine if Super Smash and Mario Kart were out this holiday as well maybe that would help too?

  • andrewjcole

Still don’t have my copy. Loved the original.

  • ZeldaFanzzzz

oh damn!!! thats what I’m talking about Nintendo, keep it up!!! Nintendo 4 life!!!

  • sd

Wow thats pretty unexpected based on the title.

  • sd

Well with no ps4 being released and 3D mario on the way I think it could be a sign that the Wii U is about to sell out in Japan this holiday season.

  • Jacob D. Taylor

If you do play games woth friends at home or more importantly family this is really a fun game. If your pro amd all your friends are too and youre not that big into party games then this probably womt turn the tides but if you like 4 ayer madness at al than this is really cream of the crop.

  • Zackary Bruley

I think that the discontinuing of the wii helps these numbers as well. For these are the 1st state after the wii was discontinued.

  • Ziggy

Just look at the names for the other titles is enough of a reason to buy wii party u and also Wayne Brady’s video “Mancave” videos on Youtube are hilarious, I guarantee this will also lift sales in the USA

  • Gregg

I can’t wait to get this game. I have 4 gamers in my house. Games like this are GOLD here. =)

  • Akatosh

Good to know this console is finally getting ground to stand on! Now all I want is my new Zelda, Smash Bros., MK8, and X.
