Open world game fans who have played Breath of the Wild all agree on one thing, Nintendo has created a world worthy of exploring in an era when most other “open world” games are anything but. This Game Maker’s Toolkit video explains how Nintendo embraced some elements of open world design while ignoring others to create a unique world that feels fresh to explore.

I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what it is about Breath of the Wild that feels unique and fresh when compared to other open world games like those that Ubisoft produces, but this video hits the nail on the head. Nintendo’s focus on giving the player choice to explore the world is vastly superior than any other open world experience I’ve played.
