If you have purchased a lot of games on Nintendo’s WiiWare and Virtual Console service for the original Wii, you’re in luck. Nintendo has confirmed that players will be able to transfer their old downloads to the Wii U. Nintendo previously hinted at this feature back at E3 2012, and now it’s confirmed via the latest Wii U Game Informer issue. It’s certainly great news for those who have a ton of Virtual Console and WiiWare games, to simply transfer them to the new Wii U Virtual Console. The Wii U has 8 GB internal storage for games and data, but allows for external USB flash and hard drives to be used for games and everything else. The Wii U is also backwards compatible with Wii games and accessories, so all of your older games will be perfectly playable on the new console. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support GameCube games, although Nintendo is rumored to be offering some GameCube titles on the Wii U Virtual Console. Thanks to Simon for the tip! local_offer Nintendo virtual console wii u Wiiware stars Further Reading Organize screenshots on Nintendo Switch Nintendo: we’re not discounting the Swi Joyous Killer Pretty cool, lets tell dad! AKA-Link77 Cool! im glad Nintendo is so backward compatible 😀 Random question: 😀 Does any1 think that if Nintendo® prices the Wii U™ at $350 but for the first 3 weeks its $300 (in other words a limited time rush) then raises the Wii U™ price back up to 350$ – is a good idea [for sales]? 😀 Smurfman256 absolutely NOT. It would make consumers feel alienated that they would RAISE the price rather than LOWER it. rafael Probably not a good idea…these things cannot be kept in secret, so no one would buy it in the first three days…if they got to keep it a secret, then everyone would hate them for doing that :/ rafael correction: ”three weeks” rafael Gee, i got wrong everything you said…just forget my coments. I would ‘dislike’ myself in that one if i could. Sorry for the triple post too, but theres no edit button. Paul would be stupid but for the extra 50 bucks or uk pounds they could do a lets say limited edition console version of blackops 2 and so on which would be pretty kool but anyways if they did that no would would buy there console AKA-Link77 OK THANKS. just wanted to know. 🙂 I need the Wii U!!!!! Awesome. Super Mario World on the gamepad!!!!!!! Yeeessss. AKA-Link77 Yah… im glad Nintendo is so backward compatibale! 😉 Unlike the other consoles: where they practicly say to dump yr old games in the trash. ( ‘)_( ‘) Icanseeu I’m pretty sure my PS2 coul play PS1 games and my PS3 can play PS2 and PS 1 games as well! Smitty it depends on which ps3 you have, mine only does ps1 :-p Norm The new versions of the PS3 OS gets rid of support for all physical games other than PS3 ones. PboyAMR Cool, backward compatibility (‘ )_(‘ ) apparently i’ve been doing the same thing but backwards Shankovich You’d better be able to lol. 11 MOAR HOURSSSZZZ 😀 Kev Wind Waker on the gamepad. Just imagine that. Kahhhhyle I really wish we still had the Gamecube compatibility I’m replaying paper Mario the thousand year door and it looks like I’ll have to leave my wii plugged in to finish:-( AKA-Link77 Dont worry! 😀 Im pretty sure MOST GameCube™ games will be in the Wii U™ ‘s online store (ive also heard a high chance of this hapning) cuz they usually do this with games 2 gens before the current gen (GameCube). Kinda like how Wii has N64 titles & 3DS having GBA (if yr an Ambassador like me). 😉 Alienfish Yeah, that’s great if you don’t mind buying them again. I’m sure there will be a few gems that I’ll get that I missed the first time around, but re-buying games just to play them on WiiU is ludicrous. Pro tip: keep your Wii and/or Gamecube. Sqarticus Im kinda bummed out about that too, because I recently started replaying the first metroid prime, and im going to have to plug my wii back in to do it. (By the way, Paper Mario Thousand year door is one of my all time favorite games, and I’ve had to have beat it at least 6 times by now, including the pit of 100 trials) Derek Being able to sit in bed and take all my old games and play them right on the gamepad screen, i’ll soon be in heaven. dojo haha ur names Derk soso minne spelled same lol but idt ull be able to play the wii games on the gamepad the game will not recongize the controller Mida Aww man. I wish it had more memory space Josh I can play Chrono Trigger on the new controller? Yes, please. But can transfer WiiWare titles to the Wii U? That is the question I want the answer to. roedburn Um, it said virtual console AND WiiWare. So the answer is yes. Kyou I still haven’t even finished Chrono Trigger…… Whenever I play it, I ALWAYS level grind before fighting bosses since they can be hard to defeat…… At least I got it to the second half of the game…… Swic11 This is a great feature. But I’m pretty sure this is really old news person Rumored? I thought they announced they would have GC virtual console titles at E3. Joesatmoes DAMMIT tomorw isnt coming soon enough!!! what sucks is that b4 i get back home from school, I will have the worst day. 1) gotta wait til 4:45 to get home 2) got a bajillion things at school- tests, quizes, you name it Nintendo better announce: More Third Party Titles:Black Ops 2, Battlefield 4, Ghost Recon: Online still coming (hopefully as a free to play), and (this is the most unlikely of all) GTA V. Even if the Wii U doesn’t get any of the other games, Black Ops 2 better be on it. Show off their Nintendo Network More info on SSB- U (dont even gotta announce the release date- just more characters). Nintendo will not be announcing more irst party titles, like Zelda or Metroid, until at LEAST E3 2013, or whenever the PS4 and/or XBox 720 are announced Kyou FORGET BLACK OPS 2 AND BATTLEFIELD 3 OR 4 THEY SUCK Kyou PLUS BATTLEFIELD 3 SUCKS ANYWAY nambit The VC stuff is great news, however, the GameCube stuff is still disappointing. There are lots of GC games that weren’t hits that I really like (Capcom’s PN03, for example) that I’m sure won’t be offered as a GC-VC games. My PS3 is still missing some of my fav PS2 games on PSN (R-Type Final) because they weren’t AAA titles. wellsberg Old news…. I want to know how it’ll be done. I sold my wii but kept some controllers and my sd card with all of my wiiware/vc games on it…. so I’m hoping a one time sd card transfer is the way they’re going! Kyron I don’t think selling your old Wii so soon was a good idea. All your downloaded games was attached to that console. Josh You’re out of luck…you will need your Wii console so you’re kind of screwed lol. Joe I hope it can play ps2 and gameboy color games 😀 Magiphart Not a chance Nintendo will ever taint there systems by allowing it to play such terrible Sony games. The Gameboy Color part isn’t likely, but far more possible that the other option. tim speaking of virtual console games, there was a rumor that the kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, chain of memories, birth by sleep might be on the wii u. i would love it if they confirmed it! Sikora … i forgot my wiishop account details… Help nintendo, I remember having 20 wiishop downloads. badkid89 You can download them again for free if you still have your Wii. badkid89 The only Wii shop account detail is the Wii’s serial number. GoldenEyeLizard Anyone see that piece of shit website “ARS Technica’s” Wii U article? That’s got to be the most stupid article ive ever read. Those pessimistic ass holes are full of it. The people in the comments are such no brained idiots they didnt even know a Mario game was coming out. I think ARS stands for A Retard Shits. Kyou That’s was a good one!! Fuzunga So I guess my game saves will have to go on an SD card? Skull Kid I need to know how the process will be. I need to sell my wii to get some money to purchase de wii u Kyou No, do NOT sell your Wii!! Keep it!! I wonder if something good will happen…… Maybe the Wii hackers will find a way to make something good for the Wii!! Colton S. Hey, what I would like to know is if that we can play Wii games that I bought at the store on the Wii u gamer1 yes. Colton S. Sorry, ignore my other comment. I had a blonde moment. (no offense to all blondes on the site.) 3030sonic This is really awesome and all (I used quite a lot of Wii Points) but what I really want to know is if I can transfer my old save data to my Wii U. I don’t want to have to start ALL OVER AGAIN for the gazillions of original Wii games I have! gamer1 Can ALL the memory be transferred? in other words, can I complete 47% of rayman on the wii, buy the wii u, transfer the data, sell the wii, and be able to pick up where I left off on Rayman? Ian I have bought a few games from the wii shop channel in the past. Will I need my wii to be able to transfer them or how will I get those downloads onto the wiiu? I did not want to hold onto my wii considering that best buy is doing an offer where you are given $50 to go towards a new wiiu in exchange for your old wii console.
