Nintendo will no doubt bring many of their famous franchises to the new Wii U console. However, it’s also certain that some will be left out. For example, the original Wii never saw a Pikmin nor F-Zero game. Nor did we see a Star Fox game. Some of those franchises are likely to see release on the Wii U, in addition to the major ones such as Mario and Zelda. We’ve compiled a top 10 list of Nintendo games we wish to see on the Wii U.

10: Animal Crossing Wii U

Animal Crossing Wii UThe Wii U could expand the Animal Crossing franchise in numerous ways. For one, the GamePad controller could make it much easier to control and manage one’s village. Secondly, and more importantly, Animal Crossing on the Wii U would be a perfect opportunity for Nintendo to create a huge online gaming experience. Going beyond simple implementation of Miiverse, a solid online component would make Animal Crossing on the Wii U a must have title.

9: F-Zero Wii U

Fzero Wii UBefore Wipeout, there was F-Zero, the granddaddy of futuristic racing games. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a fully fledged F-Zero game on a Nintendo home console. There’s plenty of ways to incorporate the GamePad touchscreen controller into an F-Zero Wii U game, with the obvious ones including the second screen as a rear-view mirror, and to control the various aspects of one’s vehicle.

8: Pokemon Wii U

POkemon wii uWe have already gone in-depth about a potential Pokemon Wii U game. Pokemon has largely been relegated to Nintendo’s handheld consoles over the past many years, but with the new GamePad controller, the possibilities are endless. For more on Pokemon for the Wii U, check out our in-depth article.

7: Mario Party Wii U

Mario Party Wii UNintendo Land is currently the one and only party game from Nintendo on the Wii U. And while they have another party game for the Wii U in the pipeline, Game & Wario, the company will likely do a Mario Party Wii U game down the line. Mario Party has sold far better than other Mario franchises, such as Mario Tennis and Mario Golf, and Nintendo will likely start with Mario Party before moving on to other Mario spin-offs. With the exception of Mario Kart, which is #6 on our list:

6: Mario Kart Wii U (Confirmed)

Mario Kart Wii UMario Kart has been on every one of Nintendo’s home consoles for 2 decades. So we’ll likely see a Mario Kart Wii U game at some point during Wii U’s life cycle, but based on the games Nintendo has confirmed in development, it might take a few years before we see Mario Kart on the Wii U. Like with F-Zero, there are plenty possibilities with the Wii U GamePad in Mario Kart. Luckily, Nintendo has confirmed that a Mario Kart Wii U game will be showcased at E3 2013.

5: Super Smash Bros. U (Confirmed)

The good news is that Nintendo has confirmed that they’re working on Super Smash Bros U. The bad news is that development only started a few months ago, which means we won’t be seeing the game on the Wii U this year. To speed things up, Nintendo has teamed up with Namco Bandai to co-develop the game. Nintendo has said that Super Smash Bros U won’t feature more characters than the last game, but that the characters will be getting new moves.

4: Star Fox Wii U

Star Fox Wii UIt’s been a while since we’ve seen a Star Fox game on a Nintendo home console. In fact, the last time we saw a fully fledged 3D Star Fox game was on the GameCube back in 2005, over 8 years ago. Star Fox has a huge fan base, and there is interest at Nintendo: designer Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview last year that he would “love to see” a Star Fox game on the Wii U. Hopefully it will happen during Wii U’s lifetime.

3: Metroid Wii U

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Nintendo is no doubt working to bring the Metroid series to the Wii U. Metroid was a huge hit on the GameCube and Wii, and brought in lots of core gamers. It’s been rumored that the team at Retro Studios is working on a Metroid Wii U game, but so far Nintendo has kept their cards close to the chest. Shigeru Miyamoto has said that a Metroid Wii U game “could be fantastic“, and Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime said last year that the team at Retro is “working on a fantastic Wii U project“. Hopefully, he was talking about Metroid.

2: Super Mario Galaxy / 3D Mario game (Confirmed)

Super Mario UThe original Wii has a lot of great first party games from Nintendo, but none were as polished, fun, and imaginative as the two Super Mario Galaxy titles. They were so good, they are ranked as the #1 and #3 best reviewed games in history. It’s unclear whether Nintendo will continue with a Super Mario Galaxy 3 on the Wii U, or an entirely new Mario 3D game. What is clear is that the game has a lot to live up to. Nintendo has confirmed that a new 3D Mario game is in development for the Wii U and will be showcased at E3 2013.

1: The Legend of Zelda (Confirmed)

The Zelda Wii U game was the very first game showcased for the new console at E3 2011. Granted, it was only a tech demo, but it looked amazing and showed just what the Wii U was capable of achieving. Nintendo has been working on Zelda Wii U since late 2010, and according to rumors, it’s scheduled for release in 2014. We previously reported that the Zelda Wii U game has the biggest development team in the history of Nintendo, and will end up as the most expensive game the company has ever made. For more, check out our in-depth Zelda Wii U article.

  • If Pokemon ever gets a proper console game, Wii U is the console to do it on. Also, It’s my hope that Retro is hard at work on a new Metroid for Wii U. Surely its been in development. Who better at the helm than Retro?

    • bizzy gie

Man, I’d LOVE to see a Metroid. Halo’s concept originated from Metroid you know so it’d be great to play an original classic.

      • xdlugia

How did Halo evolve from Metroid? Because the main guy wears a super suit?

As a super fan of both Metroid and Halo, I can say for sure that they are nothing like each other, except for being set in the future that is.

        • Jay

Fun Fact: Steve Jobs created Halo. Ironic huh?

          • xdlugia

Steve Jobs was the CEO of Apple and Apple hired Bungie to make a game for their Macintosh.
Bungie made the game, Jobs just said “please make something”.

When Microsoft saw how cool the game was, they brought the whole project and wanted it to be an FPS for their upcoming Xbox.

        • Dominic Coradazzi

Actually, a fair amount of the original Metroid Prime team worked on the first few Halo games; that’s one of the reasons they look so similar

    • MujuraNoKamen

       My thoughts exactly

    • Jay

You’re gonna be highly disappointed. Retro is NOT working on Metroid. They’re creating an original IP.

      • MujuraNoKamen

         How do you know that?
-Dang it, I really wanted Metroid!

  • Jnc

I would Love a new Metroid and Starfox game 😀 cant wait for the Mario and Zelda ones though.
I really liked pokemon snap  and Dk64 but i could live with out seeing newer versions of thoes ones. but really need metroid…

  • Matt Lambourne

I agree with all of these and I’d also like to add Kirby.

Poppy Bros Jr.!  Poppy Bros. Sr.!

    • Brett Butler

      Uh, Kirby would be awesome….

      • Matt Lambourne

Capcom have no idea what to do with Megaman since 2D platformers.

        • Brett Butler

Too bad they can’t realize that 2D is still popular, and IMO the only way to go for Megaman.   I would love to see Co-op multiplayer and being able to swap weapons on the gamepad.

      • Bryce Goutierrez

It’s a Capcom franchise. This is a list of Nintendo franchises.

      • disqus_GHV28lgqv3

Megaman is not a Nintendo franchise, the list is called “The top 10 Nintendo Franchises we want to see on the Wii U.”

  • Linskarmo

I would love all these games, and I’m very excited for the confirmed ones!

  • AnbuKaru

I would love to see a list that doesn’t have confirmed titles/games

  • Fred

What about Pikmin 3? I don’t want it to turn into Animal Crossing New Leaf or Luigi’s Mansion New Moon where it keeps getting pushed back. First I thought it was going to be launch day then I thought it would be end of 2012 then launch window now they are saying quarter 2. I want my pikmin 3

    • AstralShane

And the funny thing is: They wanted to RELEASE it for it’s 10 year anniversary. So why the fuck are they delaying it? I have said before and I’ll say it again: they’re probably rewriting Pikmin 3 into an actual Wii U game instead of just a Wii to Wii U port. The evidence of this is the new “take a screenshot from the GamePad” feature, which was displayed during the first Nintendo Direct of 2013.

      • Letha1Rage

It would also explain why the developer said he would recommend playing the game with a wiimote and nunchuck

      • Jay

i hate how gamers bitch when a developer works to make a game better.

        • AstralShane

I love how people bitch at valid explanations.

Especially when the game was going to RELEASE in December 2011 and it’s currently 2013. It was a launch title, then a launch window title, and now it’s going to “release” in the second half of 2013. Why keep delaying a game when it was already ready for release?

  • ConCity Soldier

    My list

    2. Super Smash Bros U
    3. Metriod
    4. Zelda
    5. Fire Emblem
    6. Sin & Punisment
    7. Mario Kart
    8. F-Zero
    9. Pokemon
    10. ?

    • RonaldRayguns

      My list

      1. Metroid
      2. Zelda
      3. 3D Donkey Kong
      4. 3D Mario
      5. Star Fox
      6. Pokemon
      7. Mario Kart
      8. Another 3D Mario
      9. Another Zelda
      10. Bomberman

      • Goginho

lol ..similar to my personal list. 2 Zeldas (excluding remakes such as Wind Waker), 2 Marios (at least), of course Mario Kart, and the very unlikely 3D DK (since Rare got sold).

Man, that would be sik though. Two Zelda games, just like the N64 days with OoT and MM. Two 3D Mario games would be pretty fitting and reasonable (just look at the Wii’s releases), and also not that difficult, since they could use the same engine and expand on that (once again, looking at the Galaxy sub-series).

I’m excited to see what’s in store for us :)))

        • Fred

Excluding wind waker? Don’t say that. That came out when I was in high school and the cartoonish animation caused me to never give it a chance. I’m finally wanting to give it that chance on my gamepad.

          • Goginho

😛 no ..I mean that I don’t include putting in my list, lol ..since it’s coming out anyway, and I’m welcoming it and personally find it to be a great idea that Nintendo are remaking it. I just meant two new Zelda games, a-la the Nintendo 64 era with Ocarina and Majora :DD that would be great.

      • It’s sad that Hudson soft is gone. I want Bomberman.

    • The

  • dillontm

Everyone whos anyone forgets about Earthbound.

  • The Metroid game better be like the Prime series. I didn’t like Other M very much.

    • bigevilworldwide

Like we need another Metroid COD edition…..Just take it back to 3rd person and make it like Super Metroid was

    • MujuraNoKamen

I liked Other M but I have to agree; Prime nailed it and then next one should be a Retro Studios developed, FPS adventure on Wii U. – They could continue from where the Prime Trilogy finished with that mysterious green ship following Samus.

    • Fred

Really? I enjoyed other M. Never regretted buying it.

  • MN

Come on Nintendo! Can’t you hear the Star Fox fans???

    • DragonSilths

Retro heard them loud and clear.

  • Miguel Camargo

kirbys air ride for wii u would be awsome

  • Mickey Mouse

Seriously why does Zelda always have to be at no 1? More peole play Mario than Zelda, because they find Mario less confusing, I just get lost in Zelda games which is why I hate them, and wont be getting any Zelda Wii U games. The people that write these articles just put their favourite at No 1, when the fact of the matter is Zelda doesn’t sell as much as Mario does.

    • zelda is my favorite nintendo franchise. i can see why it would be number 1 on a lot of peoples list

    • Captain Falcon

“The people that write these articles just put their favourite at No 1”

Reread the title of the article, and tell me what you see.
Honestly, getting lost in a Zelda game is no reason to hate on the franchise…

    • swic11

Zelda could be called more of a core gamers type of game.  Mario on the other hand sells millions because even grandmas can play it.  I can respect your opinion, but many Zelda players love Zelda just because its easy to get lost, it makes you think.  Zelda still sell millions although not at many as Mario, but enough to keep games coming out of Nintendo.

    • Guilliman

Zelda is grander, and more of the games have been truly great.  Plus it’s the more respected franchise.  Mario sells more because it’s so easy to like, but at the same time some of the self-proclaimed “hardcore” don’t give it a chance because they (incorrectly) dismiss it at childish.  Zelda on the other hand is almost universally respected, even by people that don’t play it.

    • DragonSilths

You get lost in a Zelda game? Thats why you hate it? Really…come on now. You always get told where to go by Navi, Midna, Fi or whoever. You go to temples in a certain order. How the balls do you get lost. I get tne feeling you are a child and you just get overwhelmed by the epicness of Zelda. Zelda is 1 of the best game series out there. In my opinion the only things that are as good consistently are Metroid and Smash Bros. But hating Zelda games cause you get lost??? Theres the door sir. Now gtfo.

    • DragonSilths

Also by your logic since more people play COD then say Mario Party that makes COD better. More people buy Mario cause it is Mario. The Casuals see Mario as a label. Its like why people keep buying the Iphone 3,4,5 and such. Just cause of the Apple logo they buy it. Mario is great no doubt. I love the 3D Mario games. But Zelda is better as a series.

    • Michael Wakeman

ZELDA IS THE SINGLE GREATEST FRANCHISE IN HISTORY. Zelda has the best characters, design, controls, graphics, fighting, puzzles, and music of any other franchise. Zelda is a harcore franchise that actually has you THINK, I undrestand that is very hard for Americans but don’t hat on the greatest franchise because your brain can’t comprehend perfectness of everything.

      • stephen grimmett

Easy on the “Americans are stupid” thing. You can’t generalize over 300 million people and throw them all into the “too stupid to think” category. Don’t be a dick to the rest of us (I’m an American) because one person doesn’t like Zelda. Odds are there are millions and millions of Americans who are smarter than you are. I’m not calling you an idiot or anything, but statistically it’s pretty likely.

Although, I do have to agree that Zelda is subjectively the best and most respected franchise in the history of gaming. I know that it is my favorite.

P.S. How do you know that he is an American?

      • great deku tree

I wouldn’t say that the fighting is the best, although it was best in twilight princess, I loved the whole scroll thing with learning new abilities and so on which I really wished they had in skyward sword. I think it would be really good if they somehow stepped up the whole fighting to another level as well as the puzzles

  • Justin Gray

With Fire Emblem and Xenoblade successor coming to the platform, my hopes are realized. Anything else will be a bonus. How about a Baten Kaitos game?????!!!!

    • Jay

nah X just killed every damn RPG game ever (you should see the youtube reactions) There’s a Nintendo hater who switches to Nintendo after seeing the trailer and a guy who’s selling his PS# AND PC for this game!! Hype’s rediculous.

I would just be happy with X and leave Baiten Kaitos behind. It never remotely generated the hype X’s trailer alone has caused.

      • Justin Gray

For me the game is the epitome of storytelling and battle system. I have Xenoblade high on a pedestal of beloved gaming  experiences but Baten Kaitos is an overlooked gem that may only need an eShop release and some well placed trailers and ads to become the hit it deserves to be.

  • TheLordOfDarkness

The title is “we wish to see” with the keyword being “wish”. Since it’s very likely or well known many of these games are inevitable, I’m surprised that Pokemon U, Star Fox U and F-Zero U (or F-U as I like to call it) aren’t among the first, second or third spots. I’m not a Pokemon fan myself, but that game alone, with sharp graphics and an entirely knew way to play, would be enough to boost console sales like no other, in part with the fact that it has never been been done before.

  • plz sign pokemon console game!!!! petition link http://www.change.org/petitions/nintendo-co-make-a-pokemon-console-game-for-the-wii-u?

    • Laud

-_- What’s the deal with petitions nowadays? A petition isn’t going to force them into making one you know.

Yeah you can wish for it but a petition is kind of like a slap to the face.

I don’t know, but I’d rather not sign that.

      • RonaldRayguns

What’s the deal with you Laud, petitions have worked for allot of things why not a videogame, maybe it has worked in the past for a videogame it wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t know, i’d rather not go through the trouble of signing it either though. But I hope they do make one ( None of that Pokemon Snap/Stadium shit) and make it super realistic like a Pokemon Fallout hybrid, but i’d bet on them not making one for the Wii U.

        • DragonSilths

Realistic + Nintendo = Invalid. Those 2 things will never mix.

    • bigevilworldwide

Yes cause we need another lame petition…Aside from the fact that Pokemon means POCKET monsters it’s staying on handhelds

      • RonaldRayguns

Your lame, they keep the MONsters in there POcKEt in the POKEballs maybe thats why Pokemon meens Pocket Monsters not because the game is released on handhelds.

  • me

    where is trauma center

  • me

and more important where donkey kong

  • Dominic Coradazzi

It’s a pretty good list but I’d add/replace animal crossing with Pikmin 3 or a new Earthbound game

  • Edward Dudley

Isn’t Donkey Kong exclusivley for Nintendo. Another Donkey Kong Country or maybe even a new game instead of Country.

  • fireheartis1

Wait I know Pikmin on the Wii were just rereleases of the GameCube games, but doesn’t that mean there were Pikmin game on the Wii?  Anyway’s I would love to see a new F-Zero game on the Wii U.  That game would look freaking amazing, and it’s mine and my wife’s favorite game of all time.  We play F-Zero GX all the time together on our GameCube.  I would love to play a brand new game with HD quality graphics.  The Gamepad hads so much potential for a new F-Zero game.  Heck my brother gave up on the Wii because the never released a F-Zero for it.  I bet he would run out and buy a Wii U as soon as it was released.  Let’s all hope Nintendo gives us one even if we have to do a kickstarter type thing.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

I wouldn’t be surprised if Retro Studios was working on a new Star Fox game.
Now Metroid, I’d like to see Platinum Games have a go at it. (see Vanquish)

  • X3Charlie

I hope the next Super Mario game puts some more focus into story. I loved the new game play in Galaxy 2 but missed the story elements of the first one.

  • DragonSilths

Retro is making Starfox HD not Metroid. Just you wait and see.

    • Fred

Do you know this or are you speculating?

  • $41809923

they need to put battalion wars 3 in this we have been waiting for 2 long years for this game for the wii u

  • No Love for Kid Icarus??

  • gnxleoo

nintendo is riding alot of money on zelda but it will sell well

  • What about Geist, Conduit, and… something from id Software? I fucking love the doom, Quake, and Hexen games.

  • why didn’t you call your article: “we want pretty much every nintendo-franchise there is to return to the wii u” 😉

  • Destructonator 101

Almost all of these franchises are like a default nintendo console game, as games like zelda, metroid, mario have come each console generation. They are coming, don’t you worry…

  • Anthony K Aurelia

    Eternal Darkenss…remake…whatever…just make it happen!

  • CharmanderRulz

I thought there was a Pikmin game on the Wii but anyway what i want to see is an elite beat agents or ouendan type game!

  • WarioForever

Where is Kirby? He’s so awesome!

  • Guest

We cant have a NEW Starfox cause of Rareware’s switchover, we could only have another remake.

    • DragonSilths

Nintendo owns Starfox you dummy. Rareware was assigned to work on it back in the day.

      • Nintendo owns the character, hence why Starfox 64 and Donkey Kong Country had remakes. They cant make new games.

        • Sesaw87

Not true because rare made star fox adventures back in 2001 and Nintendo made Star fox assault with the help of namco in 2005 also they made starfox command on the nintendo ds in 2006 and those are not remakes.

    • bigevilworldwide

Wrong company Nintendo doesn’t own killer instinct Rare/MS does

  • NintendoNoob

You can tell Nintendo is putting quality into Zelda Wii U, if it’s gonna take four years it’s gonna be good

    • great deku tree

I hope they have better temples than those in skyward sword. Also would like to see better fighting than in skyward sword, something similar to twilight princess where you develop better fighting skills, that was really good.

      • NintendoNoob

I hope they have enemies like the iron nights in Twilight Princess. That actually gave me a challenge. But a freaking fun one!

        • great deku tree

I totally agree, the enemies in skyward sword were too easy. They must also step up the difficulty in temples, like the water temple in ocarina of time (when Limk has grown up)

  • Sami Rautio

CAPCOM i have played all Megaman 12345678 .. and megamanStar force 12&3 ………..Make Megaman Game that is similiar game style and with  following story of (MEGAMAN 8 Or Megaman starforce series on wii u) Those were on Sega And Ps1 And( Nintendo ds  Consoles those were BEST MEGAMAN GAMES EVER !!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 sorry caps BUT ITS TRUEEEEE !

  • Kirbyomega

    *ahem* KIRBY *ahem*

  • Kirbyomega

My List:1. Kirby platformer in HD, with several new copy abilites, and A LOT of challenge stages so I have what to do after I beat the game.

    2. Super Smash Bros U. I have soooooooooooooooooooooooo many ideas for this, but I won’t bore you with them unless you ask.3. Kirby Air Ride U or a kirby racing game on wii u. MAKE CITY TRIAL A BIGGER CITY!!!!!!!!!! AND/OR at least give us mutiple cities.

    4. A Game that focuses souly on Meta Knight and his origins and mysteries…5. An HD Super Mario World Remake. Nothing else changed. Just the graphics. and I guess same time multiplayer would be good too.

    6. Kid Icarus Uprising on Wii U, or a similar game.

    7. A Super Mario Galaxy 3 (if this isn’t what they’re already working on) but actually GIVE ME SOMETHING TO DO AFTER I BEAT THE GAME (I got all the stars in Galaxy 2. Even the green ones.)

    8. Portal on the Wii U (whether a combo pack of 1 and 2 or just Portal 3, I don’t care)

    9. Pokemon U.

    10. New Donkey Kong Country I guess. But with more replay value. I’m all about the replay value. And I’m glad so many people in the comments want kirby

  • Josh Hills

Metroid and 3D Mario will look out of this world on Wii U.

  • MujuraNoKamen

Man I can’t wait for Metroid.

  • MujuraNoKamen

I wonder if Animal Crossing U will be New Leaf or a new game.

  • Sami Rautio

  • I just want a new Waverace. Right friggin now thanks.

  • Jay

My most anticipated games are already out/coming:

    1. Super Smash Bros.

    2. The Legend of Zelda Wii U

    3. Wii Fit U

    4. Mario Kart Wii U

    5. Super Mario Wii U

    6. Retros New IP

    7. Pikmin 3

    8. X

    9. New Super Mario Bros U

    10. Wii party

    • Fred

I can’t believe you said Wii Party! My family loved it but I couldn’t find anyone else that had played it.

  • No Love for Blast Corps!?

  • Y000000

How about Perfect Dark…not the incredibly horrible Xbox sequel but like the original. I don’t care what anybody says I still preferred that game over GoldenEye….but MUCH love for both. Nintendo is going to need a premiere first person online shooter for the next generation and I doubt there going to make Metroid online multiplayer.

  • Y000000

Also a new Battalion Wars with IN-DEPTH strategy and online multiplayer/and ds support would be much welcomed.

  • Tristan Heffernan

    I hate pokemon

  • Andrew Vale

Super Mario Sunshine I Want it On The Wii U  I loved it On The Gamecube I just Hope They Remake it For The Wii U Please Bring it Back I really Enjoyed that Mario Game

  • Seth S. Scott

Where did they say  “Super Smash Bros U won’t feature more characters than the last game, but that the characters will be getting new moves.”? Can you provide a link? Ive been following this game like whoa and never heard this. I doubt they are only going to be adding new moves to characters. If anything that was one thing about the transition from melee to brawl that people hated. Some characters ended up completely different.

I can almost guarantee that there is no way it will be the exact same roster.

  • andrewjcole

Why aren’t they replying to my emails I sent to them!

  • I want to see a Doneky Kong Country game on Wii U

  • disqus_GHV28lgqv3

I want to see a new Star Fox game for the Wii U,
if they make a new Star Fox game for the Wii U, then I’m gonna scream like a little girl at a rock concert, do a barrel roll, & die happy! XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD

  • disqus_GHV28lgqv3

I would also like to see a new Sin & Punishment game on the Wii U,
but I would be extremely happy if they made a new on rails shooter Star Fox game for the Wii U! XD
