Nintendo World Championships 2017 concluded yesterday and the winner was Thomas Gonda, who defeated returning champion John Numbers.

The players competed in a variety of Nintendo games, but to keep things fresh, the games were only revealed at the competition, so there was no time for any player to practice.

One of the challenges was a Breath of the Wild shield surfing match, another was a minigame from Mario Party 2, and there was even a competition in Tetris.

This year, there were 24 players competing for the top prize, a nice increase from 16 competitors back in 2015 when the event was last held.

Nintendo didn’t confirm whether the event would return next year. “We’ll learn a lot from this round and then determine what this looks like next”, said Nintendo’s Doug Bowser.
