The developer behind The Last Story believes the Wii U and its tablet controller is well suited for JRPG (Japanese RPG) games. The Last Story lead designer Takuya Matsumoto shared some of his thoughts on the Wii U in a recent interview, saying he and developer Mistwalker are interested in creating a game for Nintendo’s new platform. Specifically about the Wii U and the GamePad controller, Matsumoto said:

“One merit [of the Wii U GamePad] is the ability to use a touch screen to directly manipulate information, such as looking up a monster’s weak point or, like with a car’s GPS, as a tool to understand battlefield conditions on a sub screen. This special feature will likely bring about opportunities for deep research into JRPG strategy”

The Last Story Wii UHe also added that he believes Miiverse — the Wii U social network — will be implemented into most of the Wii U games in the future. Matsumoto and his developers at Mistwalker have been working on The Last Story for the Wii for a while now, and the game is finally set for release this month in North America. The game was created by many former developers on Final Fantasy, and was released earlier this year in Japan to great reviews and reception from gamers. While it’s looking promising for a Mistwalker-developer Wii U game in the future, there is still no official announcement. Perhaps this could mean a remake or a sequel of The Last Story for the Wii U?

Well, I can see being useful in PokΓ©mon.

    • LazerK

Its practically screaming for a Pokemon Snap 2
Or finally getting that official Pokemon MMO thousands have been asking for all these years would be good too…

      • Roy

Yeah I would love to see a Pokemon MMO, that’ll be epic!

      • Crapcake

        WTH is MMO

        • Kyron

It means Massively-Mulitplayer-Online. If you don’t know what that means, think World of Warcraft.

          • Ray

Good post, yet entirely some of the items were relaly treated relaly good, I conceive digging inscrutable for the matter to construct it more informative will relaly help, will exist look ahead for more informative post than this. Will advise some points which are to the best of my knowledge. This might help you bringing more info for entirely of us.

        • U Momma

          Murder Mayhem Onslaught

          • SanPharaoh

“Make, More, Options”?, But yeah it really means, Massive-Multiplayer-Online. It’s typically associated with role-playing games.

  • Wilson81

I can’t be the only one wondering how the Gamepad’s camera works?

    • Kyron

I dunno but I do know the video chat functionality will be very cool.

  • Garzard

+1 for the Wii U. Looks like the PS3 is gonna be losing some games.

    • Ikarus

The Last Story is a Wii Game.

      • ninjabake

Agreed. I want the wii u to have great variety in their game library but I also want that from Sony and Microsoft being a game enthusiast who enjoys a plethora of genres. I also agree that competition makes better games

        • Wii Uoops Sucks

    • Alienfish

It’s one thing to cheer for Nintendo to beat the odds. It’s quite another to cheer for the destruction of the competition. Competition creates better games and probably most importantly, better prices all around.

    • icanseeu

    • SuperShyGuy

      I agree

JRPGs gave people a reason to buy PS3s
JRPGs gave people a reason to buy PSPs
Few JRPGs on the GameCube hurt it.
Few JRPGs on 360 made it irrelevant in Japan.

  • Alienfish

Somehow I feel more confident about WiiU’s future than I did with Wii. Maybe it’s the boost in power or the gamepad, but I really have high hopes for this console. JRPG’s hitting the system constantly would be a good start.

    • XDLugia

Alienfish? Are you the IGN guy?

      • Josh

You can’t ask him that. The real Alienfish from IGN and NintendoLife is here, but there is also a fake who acts like a douchebag under his name here as well.

      • Cristiane

Zelda is game of the year in most cases. Red steel and Excite trucks are dceent. Call of Duty 3 is good, but i prefer the 360 vers. Wii sport is also very fun. Most of the good games will be out in 2007.

  • Paul

ive always wanted to try rpg gameson a console and if developers embrace the wii u and pad then it looks like the other major consoles should be worried

  • donicx

Baten Kaitos on wii u would be amazing πŸ™‚

    • Purple3DSXL

Agreed. I seriously miss that game, and it’s long overdo for a sequel.

    • Skozo

I was about to mention that hidden gem.
      Amazing game.

    • SanPharaoh

I’ve been looking forward to playing GC titles via DLC, but a brand new addition to this series would be an important piece to the puzzle that is my life. I hope they do make this dream a reality.

  • Gamer

Sounds like Tasuka Matsumoto and Mist Walker are creating a new game. There is confirmation in silence, learn other culture people.

  • Hi8us

The Last Story is a really good game. We can all be pretty sure that Mistwalker is talking with Nintendo about making another great game for Wii U.

  • Devils Crush

Unrelated to this story but it’s been confirmed NO real time physics or ultimate team mode on the Wii U version of Madden 13. Smdh. More watered down X platform games. Come on EA!

  • Draco Breach

I’ve been saying this for a while now :p

I really want some RPGs for the Wii U. There are plenty of rumors that a Fire Emblem game is in the works, and it’s confirmed that the latest Dragon Quest was moved from Wii development to Wii U development. I want more news on both, but Square Enix needs to announce a time frame for NA and EU release.

Yeah, I know. NDA and all.

Anyway, GamePad implementation in all sorts of RPGs is nice. EA already proved it could clean up the ME3 HUD – and enhance control scheme dramatically.

I hope to see the Xenoblade and The Last Story development teams working on something for the Wii U in the near future. Though, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen rumors surface that those teams are already hard at work for some secret project(s) on the Wii U.

    *fingers crossed*

    • Disciplelicious

Monolithsoft, the creators of Baten Kaitos and Xenoblade, are making a game for the Wii U and from that review I’m certain Mistwalker is as well. Nintendo might not have the most JRPGs but they have all the best ones.

      • Draco Breach

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I was certain I read it somewhere, but I couldn’t find it again.

Now I’m only waiting for news on the next Luminous Arc, Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, Mother, et cetera. I want to see some Nippon Ichi Software, Atlus, Bandai-Namco, and Aksys Games RPGs on the Wii U, too. It may be asking for too much, but something in the Digital Devil Saga IP from Atlus would be stellar.

        *glares at Atlus*

I’m sorry. My RPG fanboy is showing πŸ™

Maybe Nintendo and Square Enix can team up for a sequel/something to Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars…

        *dreamy eyes*

        I’ll stop now.

        • MasterPpv

“Maybe Nintendo and Square Enix can team up for a sequel/something to Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars…”

          I love you.

    • theaquacharger

DQXI didn’t move to the WiiU it was released in Japan not too long ago. It also has a WiiU version in development.

      • Draco Breach

My bad. I thought my source said it the entire project was being moved to the Wii U.

    • Daemonrunner

Monolith Soft is a subsidiary of Nintendo, you can rest assured there will be games from them on the Wii U! πŸ™‚

      • Draco Breach

        I know πŸ˜‰

I also know who Nintendo bought Monolith Soft from, and I doubt the partnership with the other company will ever really die either.

  • PKUltima

It is so great that JRPG’s are coming back to Nintendo, if it’s anything like the Super Nintendo era then many people (especially me) are going to be very, very happy.

    • SanPharaoh

I’d like to see Gaia make its way back, updated for the Wii U. ‘twould be a dream come true for me. Final Fantasy 0 would be ground-breaking. A new Mario RPG would give me nerdgasms in my sleep. Some new new new IP’s would keep me up at night. I have very high hopes for the Wii U.

  • Devils Crush

I really hope we get a Xenoblade sequel on the Wii U. Hard to imagine the scope of that game with the power of the console.

    • Kyron

      Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!! Xenoblade 2 FTW!!!

    • U Momma

The power of that console is powerful, it’s hard to imagine the scope of a game like the equal to Xenoblade. I hope we get it.

      • Draco Breach

Remember how the two giants are fighting in the middle of an ocean in the OP? Imagine exploring the world beyond.

Whoa… Wow spell upside down is…Mom!

        • Kyron

          U Wowma

  • console fan

    Maybe a new chrono trigger?

  • SanPharaoh

Xenoblade II would be…would be…would be simply incredible. I’m still hurting from the early twists and turns thrown at me from about 5 hours deep into the game. I’m the type of player who has to explore every corner of every map and hate running from battles and so I never stop grinding and leveling up, and serious believe a game of that size on the Wii U could put an end to my social life.

My copy of Last Story hasn’t come in yet, either that or it literally just came in, but I am looking forward to getting lost in that as I am still currently doing with Xenoblade.

    • Kyron

I’m almost finished with Xenoblade. To see it in HD, would make me pass out in awe.

    • Fresnokila

The bad part is that The Last Story lasts around 20 hours or less…and there is nothing to explore whatsoever…just a few hidden chapters here and there…

Now Xenoblade is a different story…I actually have 200+ hours of gameplay for replaying and trying to get all the sidequests…as you said..the scope of that game on the Wii U would be simply amazing!

  • yorgen

the last story was legendery πŸ˜€
i hope mistwalker makes awesome games for the wii u, so that other people would like to have it as well. because of the wii u exclusive πŸ™‚

  • WiiUPlayWithMe:P

JRPGs have been struggling up until recently when xenoblad and soon the last story hit the global markets, so this could be great. Developers are noticing the potential that this system has, thanks to that gamepad, could completely revitalize the genre. A new crono trigger sequel anyone? Or fire emblem. Could be used to show a character’s stats, battle info, affinities, and weapon uses left, as well as setting up formations before the battles begin. It’s too bad, though, that any off tv play would only be available for games that don’t fully use the second screen as a necessary unique function, but maybe developers will be able to find a way. Nintendo’s good at that πŸ™‚

  • Sebastian Lundh

If the WiiU gets more games like The Last Story, it will be a must have system!!!

  • Colton

I dislike most games labeled as JRPGs because I don’t care for the way the game works, I prefer open-world RPGs (like what Bethesda does).

But really, this applies to all RPGs, really. Fallout could be on the Wii U with the GamePad as a Pip-Boy, for example.

Anyone else want Bethesda on Wii U?

  • Robert

Phantasy star 5 for Wii U would be sick!!

    • BOSSMX

With some Miiverse implementation to make it even easier to gather round a team for online play. Imagine just posting “Wanna beat that huge annoying Boss?” on Miiverse and in a matter of few minutes (considering they do something about that 30 minute delay on posts) you are in game fighting a huge boss in HD while talking strategy on the Gamepad.

      WOOOWWW That would be awesome!!!
