One of the most loathed objects in the history of Mario Kart, if you haven’t been hit with the blue shell at least once in your karting career, then you’re probably the one throwing them. Either way, it’s an interesting design decision from Nintendo that has received a lot of hate, and a lot of love from certain gamers. The guys at Extra Credits decided to take a look at this specific mechanic, and why it’s so important to Mario Kart as a whole.

What’s your worst blue shell moment in Mario Kart?

local_offer    mario kart 8  Nintendo  wii u
  • MikeGreggs

I’ve found that a well timed boost can defeat the blue shell as easily as the super horn. I’ve also driven off of a cliff/edge right as it’s about to hit if possible, slightly faster recovery. And then there’s the stomp on the brakes technique if someone is close behind. They get ahead and WHAMMY! I can actually feel the rage when I do that.

  • bistricky

I thought everyone loved the ‘blue shell’ …
when you see one pass you to take out the #1 kart in front of you …..

“Blue Shell” costumes is going to be all the “rage” for Halloween….. lol

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Lol. I think that’s stretching it a bit.

  • kolikooo1

A high skilled player that got first !due to skill! should not be stopped and made 6th place due to “balance”, yes there is the super horn but that is luck based too!

    • David Trail

It adds more competitiveness maybe you aren’t highly skilled at Mario Kart as you think. Try holding back a little you might win more. This is Mario Kart not Gran Tourismo or Forza.

      • kolikooo1

But if i get hit i (or anyone else) should be able to use skill to get back.
It is like talking money from people that earned it and giving it to beggars that had all the chance to do it but did not.

        • David Trail

Maybe they had the skill in holding back and not yourself as you may think.

          • kolikooo1

the “skill” of holding back? What do you mean by that “staying back and hopping a blue shell hits the guy in front so i can be first”?
Because that seems no different then “i am trying so hard but i don’t have the skill to pass the player in front of me”

          • David Trail

            It’s not Forza lol!

          • kolikooo1

            So? LOL!

      • MikeGreggs

That’s good strategy. Play the game it is, not the game you want it to be.

        • kolikooo1

Yeah i guess i got used to all the options PC gives you, but modes like ssb4 “for glory” would fit well in mario kart 8.

      • Divaitiie!

    • Kevin Sepulveda

Mario Kart isnt the game for you if thats your mentality. Mario Kart helps the little guys who can never get first 🙁 BUT you can choose you play without items too

    • Rinslowe

That’s just the nature of Kart. To not accept this, is to court madness..

    • There’s a game for you incoming and it’s called Project C.A.R.S. Mario Kart just isn’t too much about skilling around like this. Although I gotta admit, a separate mode for players like you would be welcome. Less handicap, more about driving. Not sure if it would really be so boring, not if all other players (online) would be into that too.

      • Mr Ninty

you can make a tournemant with only coins. but the problem you will have with no weapens is that if a player has a higher level of speed that person will win. if you take on online time trail you will see only heavies like roy on top because they are faster then yoshi or mario

        • yeah, sure. So only Miis with Mercedes. no weapons, no coins. When they announced the DLC I was actually excited because you could do a real F-Zero game like that if everyone would just drive with the Blue Falcon on that Mute City course without any items.

          • Arthur Jarret

Except it would the worlds slowest F-zero game (not counting the nintendoland one)

          • sure, I don’t say it would be a true F-Zero alternative, but it would probably be as far away from Mario Kart and as close to FZero on a WiiU, it could possibly get 😉

  • David Trail

Exactly my thoughts. In normal racing games if a driver is way a head, it is nearly impossible to catch them.

The blue shell adds more challenge and tactics to the game.

  • greengecko007

Sounds like the maker of the video needs to get their facts straight. The blue shell hits whoever is/was in first place at the time of launch, not whoever is currently in first. The blue shell is also not an item reserved for lower places. In Mario Kart 8, I’ve seen it obtained as high up as 5th place. None of the players in the front know when it’s coming? Again not true, there is an alert, and the shell is visable on the minimap.

Additionally, I think the “catch up” argument they make is completely flawed. Hitting the person in 1st place does not help you along the track any faster, it only slows the driver in first down. These are not equal situations. The reality is just that the blue shell is a punishment for racers performing well.

    • David Trail

Maybe you should change your tactics. Only a suggestion. This is Mario Kart not Gran Tourismo or Forza lol!

      • greengecko007

I consistently win, so I think how I play the game is fine. LOL!

        • David Trail

So it makes your points about the blue shell kind of invalid. The blue shell does not help that much.

          • greengecko007

What points would those be? I never claimed anything about how much of a difference the blue shell makes as an item.

          • David Trail

Yes you did by complaining about it.

          • greengecko007

Please read my comment, and show me where I complain about the blue shell. Have fun searching. I have no qualms about it being in the game.

          • David Trail

All of what you said is a complaint about the blue shell or seems that way.

          • greengecko007

Perhaps you should read it again then. My entire first paragraph is just correcting the video. The second paragraph is explaining why I don’t agree with the idea that the blue shell serves as a way for players farther back to catch up.

        • Rinslowe

Sounds like we have something to settle on the track..

          “I consistently win”

          • greengecko007

Dude I would be so down with playing together! But I’ll be honest, I don’t know when we’ll get the chance. My school has got me living in a hotel room with garbage internet. But yeah, if you see me on just hit me with a message again. I’ll try to do the same!

          • Rinslowe

Its all good. We’ll play it by ear, no rush. You may need the practice in any case. Hmm hmm.
So same goes, I’m always keen for some lite competition when the time fits…

  • Ducked

Blue shells aren’t that bad, it’s just when one hits you followed by; two to three red shells hit you, then someone with a star hits you, then someone knocks you off a cliff… That’s when it’s hated.

    • Merry_Blind

Yeah I hate when I get gang-banged in this game.

      • Arthur Jarret

        Only in this game, huh?

        • Merry_Blind

That was the joke 😉 a joke in a joke if you will!

    • Lil J Moore

This.I can’t count how many times I’ve claimed 1st place only to be hit by a blue shell, then a shell, fire flower, star, bullet bill. Jeez one time I could have swear someone hit me with a coin all before i crossed the finish. GOD

      • Ducked

Same with me, even when it seems they had zero weapons, something manages to knock me down.

        • CommanderBlue

Nothing is more annoying then getting hit by everyones item.

    • Sdudyoy

Yup, this scenario happens far more than it should.

Lightning bolts are the worst. I’ve lost so many times due to someone zapping everyone while I’m trying to make a long jump across pits

    • Rinslowe

      This happens A LOT…

      • Ducked

Mario Kart Wii was definitely worse in that case.

        • Way worse indeed. That’s because MK Wii is N00b friendly. Or, in other words, it’s designed for people who suck at MK.

    • Geoffrey Tasker

I remember blue shells on MK Wii being really unforgiving, you can get by 3 back to back

      • Ducked

I hated MK Wii for that reason. lol

  • janco tianno

Well, my worst moment with the Blue Shell was at Sunshine Airport. I was at first place, a little bit far from all other players, then, almost in the last sector a lovely blue shell came… that was ok… but while I was still recovering, 5 (FIVE) Red Shells attacked me. I finished the race in 4th place.

I thought that I should give up and don’t play MK anymore. But then I remember all the races I won thanks to the Blue Shell….

    • Hahah, that’s extremely bad luck, my friend. The only thing that’s worse than that is if someone used the lightning bolt to make you mini and ran you over as they crossed the finish line.

      • Rinslowe

        That happens. It happens often…

    • Rich Garriques

I absolutely hate the blue shell , that has happened to me countless times , the worst is when your in first the whole 2 laps and when your about to finish a shell or a blue shell comes and hits you and you end up in 7th

    • Timothy Mercier

I hate when im in second and the guys in front slams on his brakes, i go flying by him and get struck by the blue shell. Ive tried doing it to others and its hard lol.

  • jreed3842

I’m not sure what my worst memory is with the Blue Shell… But I do remember back on the Wii I was hit with three blue shells on one round and still got first place… So that was a proud moment.

    • kelvin

What anime is that? Looks VERY funny lol

      • No idea. It just came up when I typed in “Blue Shells”.

      • especially that animation is very good.

  • Relick

I think the biggest problem is not the blue shells but the matchmaking system in place which gives you ranking based on the place you come in a race. I have played many games where I am in 1st the whole way until maybe 10 seconds before the end where a blue shell shoots me down to 8th and I lose a bit of ranking. That’s not fair at all.

Another problem, however, with the blue shell is that it is not used by the players just behind you. 2nd and 3rd’s objective is to knock you down out of 1st place, and claim the position for themselves. Whenever they have an opportunity they’ll slam a red shell towards you and you need to be prepared with a banana behind or something to prevent you losing position. When someone with significantly less skill, hanging back in 11th or 12th gets an item that directly affects the front of the race but does very little for the person who got the item it is frustrating as 2nd and 3rd have potentially been given a cheaty shortcut to 1st that wasn’t earned through good driving or their direct actions.

  • Zodiark

Blue shells are not really in a problem in MK8. What is a problem is the consistent lack of mushrooms for players falling behind (replaced with a surplus of red shells), and coins which turns any possibility of coming first in a match into a game of roulette. Effectively, this means players in the latter position have shells with no possible use for them, while further meaning that being hit in first will send you to 10th place after being hit by 4 or so additional red shells. Red shell will not help you catch up, they will just slow other players down.

  • Gizmo

Ummmm not offense But is this really news worthy? Other than that, my worst (and only) incident was when I was on Cloudtop cruise, was on the corner, got hit, and bowser bumped me off. Went from 1st to 6th in less than Ten seconds

  • allvalve

Blue shells can really mix things up, and are now an integral part of Mario Kart. Having said that, it is most frustrating when you are going for 3 stars in a cup and have already won the first three races, only to be hit by one on the last track on the last lap! That is annoying!

  • Daniel Velez

Wonder how the blue shell in Smash Bros will work.

  • Arkamarky

What I hate about the Blue Shell is that even if we have a Super Horn on us, we’re probably going to use the Super Horn BEFORE the Blue Shell hits us. Get hit by Thunder, use it to get a better item when your’re behind, use it to knock out your opponent or to hit a Red shell that’s coming after you. I only hit the Blue Shell 3 or 4 times after HOURS of gameplay! I know that the Blue Shell is made to put you right back in action but I also like winning!

The hell it does! It’s purely a spite item! What good will it do for someone in 7th or 8th place?

  • Justin Carlson

Have the blue shell only in multiplayer, not single player.

I think the blue shell should only exist in multiplayer in order to make it so someone can’t consistently get way out ahead of the other players.
It’s not needed in single player because the computer already adjusts how well it’s doing based on how well you’re doing. In single player it just makes you angry.

  • Nicolas Dorion

    So disagree.

-Being in front never sucks unless you are playing against CPUs or against reeaaallly shitty players. And in both cases, being hit by the blue shell will most likely just be a bump in the road. Getting first place and keeping it online or with players that actually know what they’re doing isn’t easy and isn’t boring.
-Right, the blue shell would have been too overpowered for it to be available for the player in second place. So instead of nerfing it, they decided to give it to players far away, and that doesn’t affect their victory in any way, don’t know why you ever thought that. The bullet bill helps you because it brings you forward. The blue shell literally switches places between the first and second player, or sometimes the third player. When you’re in 12th position, that still makes you in 12th position. And again, unless you are a bad player , a CPU or is unfortunately extremely close to player 1, seeing the player 1 get blown up by a blue shell will not slow you down. Ever.
-Uh yeah, for tournament players, the most skilled player should always win. Always otherwise it’s not a tournament. Even for casual players, there’s still nothing more frustrating than being supposed to win but losing because of a blue shell. Nobody ever goes “Oh, I got hit by a blue shell and didn’t win even thought I deserve it. Eh, still had fun.” Nobody. Not tournament players, not casual players, and especially not children.

Again, I’m sorry but it doesn’t make the game more fun. If being first place is so boring (which it totally isn’t as I mentioned earlier) getting hit by a blue shell isn’t an “exciting opportunity to try and get to the first place again” It just makes you angry and frustrated instead of bored. It doesn’t help the player throwing the blue shell, the only person it helps is in most cases the racer in second place (or third place), which had absolutely nothing to do with the exchange.

Whoever thought that the blue shell was a good idea didn’t understand the basis of multiplayer game design. May the better player win, that’s how it’s supposed to work.

  • Superxtreme

I only hate it when I’m trying to get a 3 Star Rating in a Grand Prix and I manage to get first place in the first 3 races and then I get destroyed by a blue shell in the final stretch of the final lap of the final race and I end up with absolutely nothing!
Sadly, this has happened multiple time in Single Player, just my luck I guess :/

  • Guest

    you casuals

  • MonadoKnight

If you get hit by a blue shell your destined to get destroyed by a whole plethora of other items. Its mario kart law

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Not true, I’ve driven away with first several times even being hit by Two Blue Shell’s.

      • MonadoKnight

Then you broke mario kart law…. How did you do that ?

        • NintendoPSXTheSecond

I was just always driving fast enough so that whenever I did get hit, people still barely caught up to me lol

  • 00EpicGamer00

My worst blue shell moment would be in Mario Kart Wii. I was on the volcano track. It was the 3rd lap, I was in 1st about to cross the finish line, but then a blue shell hit me, followed by 3 red shells, a lighting bolt; due to me shrinking I got ran over by a couple of people, and got hit with a green shell. Oh yeah… times…….

I think I literally went from first to last place in a blink of an eye.

  • LordiMcKill

You have to give praise to the Super Horn, its certainly given players hope where there wasn’t one before.

  • isimi kehinde

its funny why people didn’t see that, i mean, its all about balancing, close tight matches are always more fun and counter-attacking every item and situation makes for a rather entertaining game.

  • Rinslowe

Decent vid for the lad that made it. But I’ll disagree ever so slightly on the “out in the lead – nothing to do” scenario. Of course if you enjoy being first, its getting to the finish line without getting hit by a blue shell. Ha. Realistically, who doesn’t like dominating in first place? Hitting all the boosts and nailing all the corners perfectly. Its still a challenge knowing there’s a track full of items heading your way…

  • Iron Angel

    It’s still BS.

  • Divaitiie!

    the guy is right ;D.

  • MewtwoWillBeBack

    “First” Comment on Youtube hmm…?
    BLUE SHELL B****

  • MewtwoWillBeBack
  • Arthur Jarret

Why does this guy sound like he’s speaking through a fan?

  • the worst thing in mk8 is the stupid useless COINS!

  • Nickos Foivos

I hate how the blue shell has become! It does not fly anymore and hits others in its way! MK8 items balance is …. BAD!
