Namco Wii UNamco recently made some interesting comments about the Wii U, saying that its processor is underpowered and that the Wii U GamePad isn’t suited for fighting games. Some found these comments surprising, considering that Namco is helping Nintendo out with the upcoming Super Smash Bros Wii U fighting game. However, Namco is taking the game very seruously, saying that Super Smash Bros Wii U is a “big priority” for the developer. Not only that, the team behind Tekken is lending a helping hand to the development of the new Smash Bros title.

“It’s a big priority for the company, company wide there are a lot of people involved with that particular project. Not just from Tekken but a lot of our franchises”, said Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada to NowGamer. He added that while the core staff at Namco are busy with Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for the Wii U and other consoles, they’ll be supporting the Super Smash Bros Wii U dev team later on.

But when it comes to including Tekken characters in Super Smash Bros Wii U, Harada was less than optimistic. “When thinking of the playerbase who is playing Smash Bros, maybe Tekken characters is something they wouldn’t want”. What do you think? Would you like to see some Tekken characters in the upcoming SmashBros fighting game?

  • mac

lol good no tekken characters i love that i but they should bring back the character list from melee i miss playing with roy

    • Alienfish

That’s what she said. I’m sorry, I just had to.

      • mac

lol i know u had to i missed it myself lol good find

    • Bob Singh

i loved ganondorf from melee too. don’t remember if he was on brawl though.

      • The Beeshnu

Yeah you had to unlock him though

    • GREG

They’ll probably replace ike with the new character from Fire Emblem Awakening. Id love to see Dark Samus, Shadow the Hedgehog, Ghirahim, Megaman, Isaac/Matthew (Golden Sun)

    • gNat

Roy and maybe Dr. Mario are the only ones that id like to see back. toon link replaced young link for good and id like to see lucario replaced w/ zoroark. even if they bring back roy and dr. mario they would have completely different movesets because they were taken out for being “clones” in the first place.

  • Fresnokila

Tekken characters surely don’t fit in Smash Bros…though Snake didn’t seem like a fit either so who knows…
I for one would not like to see Tekken characters in Smash..maybe Pac-Man haha

    • Jonas

smash bros is good how it is/was on the wii. I think some little changes can be made but the characters are fine. But i think if there was a tekken character in the game or two, i would not really care.

    • Chris Ogilvie

Pac-man could probbly work as an assist trophy nothing more
I would love to se them put klonoa in the game though, he would fit perfectly in and it might help him get a bit of popularity for a new game.

      • joe

Leon from RE4 would be cool….
        Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue….

    • Marq

I’ll take Lloyd Irving and KOS-MOS, and I’m good.

  • Kirby

I would love to see Mametchi. And I hope toon Zelda/Tetra come in.

    • WiiuFanboy

Tetra would be nice but we already have Toon Link silly c:

  • trainerblk

He said difficult witch in a way is true media hyping sh*t up again

    • trainerblk

& i ratter pacman rayman & megaman then tekken characters

  • josh

No namco period. If they don’t like dev on Wii u fuckem then. Nintendo is capable of doing it themselves.

    • allstarsucks

Agreed. Namco is going around complaining about the cpu being under powered and how the gamepad is terrible for fighting games. And they are going to turn around and help create a game like smash bros?

      Not good news imho.

    • The Beeshnu

Yeah isn’t it supposed to be a nintendo game?

      • WiiUPlayWithMe:P

They said underclocked, not underpowered. It just runs slower than they’re used to, but the rest of the tech is more powerful and modernized, so it isn’t underpowered. It just doesn’t have the full speed they are used to working with. Seriously, if they didn’t like it, then they wouldn’t be working on tekken and smash bros for it. And don’t forget, they’re still making it under Nintendo. Sakurai is still in charge and everything. They just have a professional team working on it, and not some random make-shift team, which Nintendo usually does. And about the gamepad thing, would you really want to have to keep track of 2 screens while in a fight. Super smash bros and all other fighting games for that matter, are all very fast paced games, where if you take you eyes off the screen, you’re probably gonna be taken out, so the second screen really would be kinda distracting if it had info you really needed. Come on guys, just think about this. You have to fully take your eyes off of your character and the screen in order to use some touch screen function. That’d leave you wide open. That’s what they want to avoid and that’s why they’re saying the gamepad doesn’t really work for it. It’s different for the 3ds since the screens are attached and the same distance and you can look at both, but you can’t really do that with the gamepad. So cool down for a sec and just listen to what they were saying. It’s not, “oh, Nintendo gave us this crap system to work with” it’s, “we’re working on these games and this is what we may have trouble with” they’re keeping us informed on their work. We should be happy. It isn’t behind some huge curtain. We know now not to expect some huge second screen role in the next smash bros, and I’m happy with that. This means we can still play it with our 4 other friends next to us using the pro controller. I’m just saying, don’t be so quick to attack people who aren’t praising Nintendo at every corner. They actually didn’t say the slower core clock was even that negative. They said it forces them to be creative and that sounds like a good thing to me. Nintendo is a big company, it can defend itself. Let’s not jump in to it’s rescue when it doesn’t need it. Nintendo got the people they thought would be best for the job. Let’s just have faith in them all. We’ll probably see at least a CGI trailer next year or something, so at least wait til we see that to start hating on Namco

        • James Bowserman

          Finally, someone with some sanity.

        • The Beeshnu

I agree with most of what you are saying but it’s one of nintendo’s most profitable franchises I just don’t want them to mess this up. I’m not really hating on Namco i like them (just finished playing Time Crisis 4 at the arcade) I just don’t want other companies messing up a beautiful formula. Fighting + Nintendo characters. Adding a few new nintendo characters will be fine but imagine in the future a SSB game with 1000+ fighters that arn’t even anywhere near nintendo characters? Jusy sayin

        • LazerK

          That was beautifully well put

  • Thrasher 1x

tekken characters could fit just like snake fit

  • Firebro

Honestly not really. Stick with Nintendo thats why melee was the best.

    • WiiuFanboy

Honestly I liked Brawl more since it had onlineplay, more Solo gameplay than melee did, and more characters… But we all have opinions 😛

  • Parker

Yes Tekken characters, the more new charactes the better.

    • mac

i disagree. to me the more new characters the worst. do you know how many good characters did they have to get rid off making room for new characters (I.E: roy, young link, Dr. mario). those were great characters but get replaced with ike, toon link and olimar. so yeah the less characters you put in the better.

      • Chris Ogilvie

Um of the 3 characters you mentioned 2 of them were clones and one of them was replaced by the exact same character (toon link, young link).
That and ike replaced roy because of how similair he was to marth from what ive heard and wherether you liked him or not olimar had unique gameplay that was different from all the other characters.

More characters arent bad it just means they have to work more to balance them out but smash has always been chaotic anyway, one minute you could be kicking your opponents ass, just for a hammer to spawn theyre way and they then continue to utterly destroy you.

      • Tristan

        Those were good replacements.

  • Fresh

They didn’t say the processor was underpowered at all. They said the clockspeed was slower which is something very different. Btw the clockspeed of my new mac pro is also slower than my old Pentium… do the math.

  • T13char

Seriously* i love pointing out typos!:)

  • Wii Uoops!

Gosh, it sounds like Namco is almost DOESN’T want to work with the Wii U, what with how underpowered they say it is.

    • WiiUPlayWithMe:P

They actually said underclocked. That’s a misquote. These authors are a bit to jumpy. Slower clock speed does not mean less powerful. 2 completely different things. These editors need spellcheck and to not misinterpret what other people said. They need to tell us what they said, so we can misinterpret it on our own 😛

  • Man

Tekken Team Dont touch our god damn system with all the crap you talk .lol. naw but it wouldnt hurt if they added some assist characters that are from tekken and some Namco characters would be good, like Pac-Man,DBZ ect. but also (mostly) Nintendo, sega and capcom characters it would be cool if they had dividers for each company.

  • Jesus Encinas

    No characters from Tekken.
But add SOME new characters, like “Dark Samus”. I’ve been waiting years so it can be a playable character.

  • Butts

Tekken Characters in Smash? Nahhh. Maybe Kuma. But Nahhh. Nevermind.

  • Shankovich

As much as I like Tekken and stuff, I’d hate to see their mechanics and controls in a SSB game (I don’t want to memorise 30+ button combos for Samus -_-). Then again, I really really don’t think that’ll happen LOL, just stating my biggest fear 😛

  • Envy

I would like to see Jin in SSBU. Only Jin.

  • gPadWatcher

Imagine… Samus Aran vs. Nina Williams

    • nintendon’t

Imagine Shy Guy vs. Liam Nesson… I’d like to see that epic battle in SSBU 🙂

  • Pokemon Master#1

I would like pokemon trainers from all the regions, and boss battles like on brawl but this time you could be the bosses and fight other bosses.Tournament mode online would be cool too.

    • WiiuFanboy

This is a Super Smash game, not a Pokemon game silly c:

  • Rocky

you can use GON from takken small little dinosaur with a turtle shell and boxing gloves…he fits as a super smash bros. character.

  • Mr. Will

So, when does the “We Want Geno” chant begin?

    • mac

      lol never

  • Doors54

Give me Shadow the Hedgehog, Wolf (star fox), and Bowser Jr. and I’ll be happy, but adding tekken characters… cool, but I would only unlock them, never use them (Like I did with Ganondorf in Brawl)

  • Doggy

Yes. The more the merrier. Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale got a Tekken character, and since Namco is helping with Smash, I expect the least.

    • WiiUPlayWithMe:P

Yeah, but that game gets points for kills, smash bros is just a knock em out of the ring thing. I think the attitude of the games are gonna be different enough to where tekken wouldn’t fit really well with the characters. Assist trophy, yeah, but playable character, that may be pushing it

  • Alienfish

That’s the great thing about Smash is that basically any character from any game or genre can be made into a playable character effectively. I think they should pick one or two good characters from the Namco universe to put into Smash Bros.

  • Your mom

Hmmm… Is there going to be Pacman in super smash bros wii u.

  • LOLPole

Mmm. I’m not sure if Tekken characters would fit in a SSB environment. Maybe like Pac-Man or Gundam. That would be cool maybe available through DLC.

    • Dan7el(WiiU day one purchase)

Yes! the new smash needs dlc. Now that is dlc I would gladly pay for.

  • Draco Breach

I find the sudden bashing of Bandai-Namco a tad amusing. I say this because, as a few have pointed out, they never said the Wii U was weak or underpowered. They said the clock speed was a little low. What does this mean, exactly?

Well, there are rumors the development kits are, in some way, underclocked. The boosted memory can make up for lower clock speeds. It could be limitations in the architecture, or it could be restraints on current SDKs.

The immediate comparison to the PS3’s Cell should actually be rather telling. This indicates to me, rather than an unwillingness to develop for the Wii U, a realization of the difficulties of adjusting to the architecture. This is not something we’ve heard from developers, but it should honestly be expected.

Supposedly, the Wii U runs on architecture similar to the Wii and GameCube. I would need to dig into the SDK to be sure, but there may be certain difficulties to high-definition scaling. Or maintaining framerate. Or maintaining GamePad stream.

There’s a whole new dilemma with the GamePad that I just thought of. Nintendo hasn’t really mentioned how the information is streamed. It’s too far for NFC, and Bluetooth is too slow. That leaves DLNA, a reversioned existing technology that nearly everybody’s forgotten about, Intel’s streaming technology, or HDMI wireless protocols that I forget the name to.

Oh, I’m actually giving myself headaches… Sadly, I don’t have dev kits, SDKs, or any requisite development tools to actually quell any worries. We only have rumors and a few comments made by developers.

Maybe Bandai-Namco was careless, or maybe there are some concerns they are just now learning to consider. Either way, I doubt Nintendo would give such an important project to a company that hated them or the new system.

A few critiques do not an enemy make. I don’t know where exactly to place Bandai-Namco’s words just yet, but I’m not willing to write off the company just yet. By a long shot, actually.

I still wants my Tales of [x].

Actually, I don’t want Tekken characters in my Smash Bros. Wii/3DS. I selfishly want Lloyd and Collette!

Ah, forget it. Give me the entire Symphonia cast! Genus, Raine, Sheena, Kratos, Regal, and the frilly guy I don't actually care about. They'll be fun! I think those types of characters fit perfectly well, and actually have some nicely designed movesets to build in and balance with the rest of the cast.

    • Pokemaster

      But Zelos is awesome! XD

In all honesty, I do wish that the developers of one of the most anticipated games of the next generation were a little more enthusiastic about the console, but hopefully by 2014 they will have learned to love the Wii U. If there is a king developer of fighting games, it’s Namco.

And yes, Draco Breach, I want my Tales of [x] as well lol!

      • Draco Breach

I don’t know that Bandai-Namco is showing a lack of enthusiasm. Again, they are making a critique. As @WiiUPlayWithMe:P said, it’s just a little hump they mentioned. It kinda feels nice to be in the loop. They have to keep some development secrets, but this keeps expectations more realistic.

As for Zelos, I actually forgot his name :p He usually ends up in my final eight, though, as I just love the Lloyd/Collette snow scene – where you decide between Kratos and Zelos. Yes, I do know the scene changes based on relationship values.

It’ll be interesting to see what direction Bandai-Namco can help Nintendo take Smash Bros. Wii/3DS. Sakurai has his vision, and it looks like he finally wants to expand the scope. Everybody knows what makes Smash Bros. great, so I think (hope?) we can expect great things.

  • Kard

  • AndyC

I’ve heard that the Wii U CPU is a modified POWERPC 476FP, that has a clock speed of 1.8Ghz, but works at 5 THREADS A CORE, it almost and possible could outperform the xbox 8 with that kind of power! So that could explain the low clock speed!

    • WiiuFanboy

Not irrelivent to the subject but okay…
It’s nice to get the whole thing cleared up but next time post your things in the right post ;P

      • 999 rupees

        Two negatives make a positive.

  • sanjay

Time for yu suzuki and sega to come back and make diverse games and wipe out the mass fps trend

  • Nintengoth

I DO NOT want to see tekken characters in this game, snake and sonic did not go in Brawl it ruined it for me, JUST Nintendo characters nobody else.
please dont f*ck this game up for me namco 🙁

  • Dan7el(WiiU day one purchase)

No No NO. Dont mess up smash! Tekken is a tremendous fighter but in smash bros…. I think not (devil Jin against mario… Please no) . Now Klonoa on the other hand…..

    • WiiuFanboy

Either way Tekken characters would ruin the game… Luckily Snake and Sonic didn’t but they really weren’t the most “used” characters in the game…

  • Baseball R

I really don’t care about tekken charecters in the game, I would just like to have new guys to fight with on the new game for the series. It would make a huge boost for the series, too.

  • Death

Just give us Waluigi damn it!
And maybe Ghirahim/demise form Skyward Sword. :/

  • Marcus

no men tekken chars dont!!! melee chars yes

  • DerikGotro64

I don’t think namco got the memo.
Ninteendo made it public that developers have the option to use the gamepad screen or not. If namco thinks its too distracting (in fighting games sakes), either A) use the wii u pro controller or B) don’t make the screen nessessary at all during gameplay.

    Its that simple.

    • WiiUPlayWithMe:P

They don’t require it for third party games, but this is a Nintendo franchise, and it’s already, probably, highly recommended that they do use the gamepad, even for third parties. Otherwise, I bet the third parties wouldn’t be using it as much as we’ve seen.

  • Adam Fox

NO NO NO!!! Do not put Tekken characters in Super Smash Bros….I don’t care that Playstation All-Stars gets a Tekken character since that game (along with games like Crash Kart Racing) is nothing more than a rip-off of a Nintendo franchise rip-off! Super Smash Bros. is a NINTENDO character thing….bring back missing characters from other games in the series for the WiiU version, make it like Mortal Kombat Trilogy with all the characters included…maybe add new ones, BUT NOT TEKKEN CHARACTERS!!! And please….please…NOT DLC!!

    • Pokemon Master#1

      DLC stages would be OK.

      • WiiUPlayWithMe:P

Or free dlc characters. Or maybe ones you get from Nintendo figurines, using the NFC chip. Nintendo is starting to take up dlc so I wouldn’t be surprised

        • Draco Breach

It would be interesting to include NFC technology with Smash Bros. WiiU/3DS (I think I’ve been forgetting “U” in my posts XD ).

It would allow Nintendo and Bandai-Namco to release character packs with plastic statuettes to expand the cast – after carefully balancing of course 😉 They could even come with additional stages.

It’s not such a bad idea to carefully plan and implement DLC. It’s especially useful to keep Nintendo Network operations as close to free as possible, or free altogether as long as possible. If you can utilize NFC with the DLC, you can make a hefty profit margin to spend on server maintenance.

  • Ariljy

as long as Namco stop hatin >:/

  • Gamecube forever

    NO tekken characters

  • The Man Who Sold The Mario World

I want Kalas from baten kaitos he fights vvery well has many specials & he’s from that company.. I only want that character from that company..
& Sothe from Fire Emblem & Captain K. Rool from DKC2..
Hopefuly they do a great game I don’t like that company very much

  • WiiuFanboy

It would be nice to get some 3rd party support, but i hope they don’t change anything (Tekken Team) because if they change the life thing like Tekken not many people would like that, and If they added New characters, old characters would leave (but the current roaster is perfect, except for R.O.B [he should just stay a story mode character] but if they do get rid of R.O.B Namco might add the new character and we dont want that! I think NIntendo should get some help, but not so much from Namco but maybe Ubisoft [it would be funny if they added just dance characters, imagine… fighting in the next super smash game as a dancer… beating up link while wiggling, or showing of mario while shuffling]) So in conclusion if they get help. Namco shouldn’t be allowed to add/remove characters or change fighting style (since its perfect the way it is) but third party support wouldn’t hurt but namco’s help might (lol)

  • Joyous Killer

Ima Cry 🙁 This is a Nintendo only game! Nitendos all stars in a Clash of fast paced Combat action! Dont fuck this up Namaco! Only Nintendo Charecters!

  • KuzKosaki

tekken characters would most certainly NOT fit in smash bros. but even though nintendo said they wouldnt be adding any new characters they to add at least a few to spice it up. plus fit in characters from naruto, dbz, bleach etc. and give the game a little more hardcoreness to it. wouldnt hurt eh? but either way i love smash bros no matter how it turns out just make it already!

  • kirbymon123

Required characters: all the ones they already have plus spear waddle dee from Kirby’s return to dreamland, klonoa, megaman, and since namco bandai is helping why not goku and naruto.

  • D3V1NdaDOOD

The only Tekken character that would fit Super Smash Bros. is Gon from Tekken 3.

  • Goobypls

I personally belive they should bring back all of the characters from melee and brawl or at least make them available for dlc, also they should add the ability to use movesets from the latter games.
