Currently Target is offering a deal on the Wii U basic set, dropping it down to just $240. That’s a $60 price reduction, which means if you walk in and buy a game with it, you’re getting a game and a system for less than $300. Retailers seem fond of embracing an unofficial price cut despite Nintendo’s objection to one, as price cuts all over the UK have been steadily dropping the price of both the basic and the deluxe sets. This could be the start of the same price war here in the US. This comes after a rumor that the Wii U sold only 38,000 units in the month of April. What do you think? Is a price cut needed for higher adoption? local_offer Nintendo Target wii u wii u basic stars Further Reading Nintendo loses patent appeal, ordered to pay Nintendo was brainstorming about Switch when Ernie Sanguyo only the basic got lower not deluxe? HSN1 They need to sell their units, and because the Basic doesn’t sell, they’re forced to lower its price. The Deluxe one sells fine, so they don’t need to lower the price. Shaise Mughal Yeah, I think its memory people want Zorpix and the pack in game. deluxe is an obvious choice D.M.T The basic bundle is selling even worse that’s why. What was Nintendo thinking when they decided to give the white Wii U 8GB? Give the white Wii U 16GB at least, you know half the storage that the black Wii U has (32 GB) Levi Johansen You’ll need a Hard Drive within a year or two no matter which one you choose. It supports a 2TB Hard Drive, so that’s what I’m gonna get. My 32GB is almost full already. val berger exactly. It doesn’treally matter if 8GB or 32GB as both isn’t really much. I think, they should have the white WiiU with 32GB and the black one with at least 64GB. I know, flash storage isn’t that cheap, but calling a system with 32GB ‘deluxe’ seems a bit odd to me. Of course there’s more in that plan, still you gotta buy an external drive in any case which makes any discussion about storage limitations needless. I personally don’t think it’s a very good solution letting the customer buy an additional external drive. it would be a nice option to be able to use it, but making it a necessary thing seems like a designfail to me. It’s an additional device, more cables, more energy and so on. I don’t buy a console for that. I want to have everything in place, being able to access my data as quick as possible. but ok, it’s like that and that’s the way it is. But in the end, this is the reason why 8GB shouldn’t be an issue for everyone not going for the white wiiu. D.M.T The black Wii U is called Deluxe because of the extra content inside the box, not because 32GB is considered deluxe. In the Deluxe box you get a game, more storage and other accessories like the charging cradle etc. It’s called Deluxe because you get more things for just $50 extra. val berger as this discussion was about storage limitations, I just wanted to point out, that it doesn’t matter, as 32GB aren’t much too. I myself bought the deluxe version because of the other featurs you mentioned, it’s just ridiculous to not buy the white wiiU just because of the harddrive. Of course the right reason would be not having those other deluxe features. I am personally sure that Nintendo just created the basic edition just to letthe deluxe edition look better. If there weren’t the basic bundle, ppl may tend to see the WiiU as overpriced but with the basic bundle, they make customers believe that they really get such a great deal for just 50 additional bucks. And as we see it totally works out. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, actually it’s one of the smarter marketingmoves, nintendo did here. Although I don’t know if it wouldn’t be better to just have one product. D.M.T Actually it does matter because if you buy the 8GB Wii U you’ll need an external HDD a lot sooner than others with a 32GB Wii U. I still have 22GB of free space so I won’t need an external HDD anytime soon. I refuse to download games from eShop, I only have a few demos and I haven’t completed my games on Wii U yet. Levi Johansen I guess it is possible to never buy a hard drive with the deluxe version. I have downloaded a fre games from the eShop. You cannot fill the storage with only VC, it would take several years, unless they release GameCube games on VC. Shaise Mughal Some people wanted a deluxe white one TAKANYAN WiiU!!! Sander van der Ham Glad I got mine when Amazon listed theirs for 150 GBP two weeks ago. When I checked back a week later it was back on its old price. Here in the Netherlands they’re still selling the basic pack for 300 euros, so it saved me 120 euros… If you want to get a cheap and new WiiU now’s the time to buy one, don’t wait any longer because once the next Nintendo Direct has 3D Mario, Mario Kart and Smash Bros. covered the sales will skyrocket and the pricing will go back up. Ony Yeah if you could make a cut price in France, that would be great. (Bored to play Monster Hunter Ultimate alone. Friends, why u so poor?) Denvy Basic gets the cuts because it’s not worth getting. Next to no storage space and lacking all the extras of the deluxe package including the Digital Promotion. No one wants the basic. D.M.T It’s funny to me how some journalist or whatever they are, are just telling one side of the story to make things seem worse than they really are. I’m not saying you are doing this Ashley, I’m talking about others who posted the rumors of Wii U only selling 38,000 in April. I just saw these numbers on a website: – Wii U sold 27,000 units worldwide in the 2nd week of May – The Wii sold 30,000 units in the same week. This means that the total number of Wii U sales in May will be higher than April’s number if the rumor is true and the Wii U is still competing with the Wii. The 3DS, Wii and even the DS is helping Nintendo with Wii U’s struggles. Wii U is selling WITHOUT any big 1st party games available so what will happen when Nintendo releases it’s first big game Pikmin 3? Exactly. val berger don’t give pikmin that much credit. sure, you love it, I love it, but in general the franchise is not that popular compared to other nintendo franchises. and I think many people who really would buy a wiiU just to play pikmin probably already got one. don’t get me wrong, i don’t wanna be too negative about that, I just can’t read it anymore. the past 6 months were really bad and everyone is actong like everything’s gonna change as soon as a single game will come out. it just won’t be happening. If Nintendo manages to built a good library of original software, then the audience will grow. but that can’t happen that fast as every chance of creating a momentum and a hype is already gone. when you’re launching a new system, then this alone should be a marketing-advantage as newspapers tend to write about your product and if you make it right, you can get a lot of self running viral advertising. but not if you can’t deliver what the product really needs and if you start doing that half a year after the launch, you’ll have a much harder time, especially in times like these. Sure, as I said, Nintendo may be able to deliver. But it just won’t be easy and it won’t be this summer. At least here ends my pessimism as I’d say that 2014 is gonna be a way better year to be a WiiU owner than 2013 and it looks like this won’t even be that hard to reach. D.M.T Listen Val, the Wii U is still selling with just Mario Bros. U as the only 1st party title on Wii U, when Nintendo releases Pikmin 3 it will get better from there. Did you watch the last Nintendo Direct? Nintendo is releasing 4 or 5 Wii U exclusive games in the summer: Game & Wario coming out on June 24th Pikmin 3 on August 4th New Super Luigi U in June (DLC) and retail in late August Wonderful 101 on September 15 Zelda Wind Waker HD is rumored for the summer or shortly after These are just 1st party, there are great 3rd party games like Splinter Cell, Rayman Legends etc. coming out in the summer as well. If the Wii U is able to sell WITHOUT the good games than it will definitely sell with the games coming out in summer. I’m not worried about the Wii U but I understand why you are worried. val berger E3 will show what to expect next 🙂 SeroReviews That’s what I always say boynhisblobs I agree in that Pikmin is not huge in the States, but it is in Japan and will likely push a lot of Nintendo hardware abroad. It’ll be the mario and zelda releases here that also push the system hardware. Is it just me or does anyone else think a new Wii U Sports would really help right about now? That game really helped the Wii. val berger We all shouldn’t forget that the Gamecube was a System with Super Mario and even 2 Major Zelda Titles (and one minor one > Four Swords), 2 Pikmin games and even 2 Metroid Prime games. Even F-Zero and Super Smash Bros couldn’t change the fact, that the system wasn’t really great selling. And I don’t wanna tear the gamecube down, it was an amazing system (you just need to see my list of blockbusters here 🙂 ) but like most systems, Nintendo did make profit with the Gamecube from the beginning, so no matter how we see it, Nintendo should have at least the success with the WiiU like they did with the Gamecube which, in my opinion, doesn’t look that easy to reach in the moment. Sure, sure, we don’t know what E3 brings, but I think we have an idea what they will show there and I just can’t help myself but I don’t feel too confident about that. Maybe if they’d release everything they show there until holiday season, but if they don’t roll out some real bombs in a short period, this may not work out that well. And with Nintendoland, they actually have one hell of a great equivalent to Wii Sports. The idea of Wii Sports was to have something for the start that playfully demonstrates the system’s capabilities. I personally think, Nintendoland does this job even better than Wii Sports as me and my friends really had crazy fun with those games. But I know what you are talking of. You mean, something like Wii Sports with the same impact. and that’s the problem, some things can’t just be repeated. The Wii’s unique motion controls had such a huge impact on the whole industry, no question a game like Wii Sports had to be a huge success. With the WiiU Nintendo still struggles to teach customers and developers what really makes the system unique. It’s obvious, that there are original aspects it’s just not obvious how gamers gain profit from them. even when you’re playing, you not necessarily know what makes the system special, not in the same way, you used to know that with the Wii. And this isn’t such a bad thing, it’s just really really hard to explain, especially when advertising the system. So a Wii Sports-title can only be as good as the ability of the system to catch the audience that fast. And while Wii Sports really was like a new way to play games, Nintendoland seems more like the way back to the roots that still has some tablet-supported gameplay but on the other hand offersquite old school gameplay and in the end, that’s what Nintendo tries to tell us with the WiiU. It combines aspects of the Wii with more common/classic gameplay we know from the mainstream. And the lack of being something completely new beyond everything else is one of the main reasons, they are suffering to sell the system. Nintendo is a little bit like Apple in that way. The are always pointing out ho innovative and original they are. That’s why customers, developers and even the stock market is expecting them to reinvent the wheel with everything they’re doing. and as soon as they aren’t, everybody cries. For me personally, the WiiU totally works out and I would even say, that it’s the coolest system I’ve ever had. That’s why it still gets me that frustrated, that Nintendo makes so much wrong with communicating with customers through advertising and marketing. Except of the directs, they are fun. But there would be just so endlessly more to do … Talesgirl015 Who’s fault is that, Nintendo did literally everything wrong with this console. From the tech specs, pricing, branding, confusing marketing (and lack of), weak initial first party lineup, poor third party relations, etc. There’s not really one single big flaw that you can point to like PS3’s high price and say “here’s how to turn things around” because Nintendo dropped the ball on nearly every aspect of the Wii U. without covering their bases, they released outdated, console to get ahead start on Sony & Microsoft..problem is Nintendo needs the killer app and fast. val berger although I really agree with you on your main message, I wouldn’t go that far claiming Nintendo would’ve done everything wrong. It’s more the whole recipe is wrong, not the ingredients. and they should hire a real cook, next time they wanna create something huge. tronic307 REAL Nintendo games are “needed for higher adoption”. Fred The 8GB didn’t bother me I knew I was going to get an external hard drive (I bought a 2TB one). The reason I bought a deluxe was for the Deluxe Digital Promotion. But for $240, I would have bought this one instead and then bought a digital copy of Nintendo Land. boynhisblobs the deluxe digital promo is a money saver tho, its already got me all my VC games without paying for them. Also, you would have gotten no points for that Nintendo Land purchase. Deluxe is the way to go. Fred Yes the promotion is nice, but I doubt it’s saved you enough to make up for the price difference ($110 if you don’t want Nintendo Land $50 if you want Nintendo Land) Trust me I know the differences and that’s why I chose the Deluxe, but a lot of people could benefit from this deal. zimbambo LMFAO price cut after price cut will not save this utter turd console!!! The next gen will OBLITERATE this pathetic turkey!!! HA boynhisblobs Actually, no it won’t. These 2 new systems are going to be even more expensive in a world where your phone costs $200 plus and provides tons of gaming. The world is just not ready to put money down on the next generation when everyone feels the current generation is just fine. I remember a similar story for PS3 in its first few years, price cut after price cut. That thing was $600 when it launched with only a handful of games, the only one worth playing being Resistance. It only sold 47,000 consoles in the first few weeks. It was also seen as “less than impressive” by the media at launch, tearing it apart and calling it…DOA. But, as with most new systems it took developers awhile to tap into the full power of the system and took awhile to build up the fanbase, but it did happen. I don’t know why people seem to think this time around its just supposed to be instant success when it never is. It’ll take awhile before the last generation is phased out and gamers are forced into a purchase of a new console. That’s when we’ll truly see a console war. zimbambo Nintendo at this years E3…Mario,Mario,Mario, Zelda zelda, Smash bros………wow talk about original!!! LMFAO Archiq09 but imagine parents when they will buy a console for thier kids – PS4:near 1000$, xbox: near 1000$ and WiiU: 240$ or 350$ 1000$ for a cosole? I have a PC with same power for 1000$ and with a pc I can upgrade part of the PC. xD zimbambo LMFAO $1000?shut up you loser the next gen will be half that or even less!!! Sony has said that they will never make the same mistake they did when they priced the ps3 at $600 at launch!!! You nintendo slurpers praying that they will be $1000!!!LMFAO audi lover Nintendo slupers? They making drinks now or are you just a twat, I choose the 2nd option your blatantly just a twat Archiq09 me I have heard to friends they just like playstation and it’s 600 or 700 euro* they have says…. Denvy $1,000 console? I think that’s a gross overestimation . My guess is somewhere between $400-$500. An entry point near 1K will not be successful. audi lover In uk we will pay £ 400ish thats around $ 600-700 depending on exchange rate, thats still an insaine amount for a console Talesgirl015 The Difference is, unlike the Wii U. The Core gamers are excited for PS4 & Next Gen Xbox. For most price won’t matter… D.M.T You’re living in bubble, a fantasy world where you think price don’t matter. It matters which is why PS3 struggled when it was priced $600. Millions of people have bought a PS3 or 360 after 2009 and most of them will not upgrade to PS4 or next Xbox anytime soon, especially since those systems are not backwards compatible. Those excited for those systems are the die-hard fans and fanboys and they are making a lot of noise but truth is most gamers won’t buy these systems at launch because they either don’t have the money or it doesn’t make sense to make the upgrade soon, especially since PS3 and 360 are still getting tons of games. I know you’re trolling but there are ignorant gamers who will believe your BS so I need to respond to your BS so that ignorant gamers can read the other side of the story. Agent721 Is that why the PS3 was outsold by the PS2, its first two years out the gate? Until a giant price drop & a redesign? Those hard core fan boys sure were killing themselves over the PS3 then! Talesgirl015 Poor Target, like most retailers. They’re losing money on Wii U. now are force to price drop the outdated console.. Why would Nintendo think they could make a new console that’s just a little more powerful than the current consoles? Clearly They don’t know what they’re doing. Someone should lose their job over that one. sadly, once again, price drop won’t matter cause casuals gamers have moved on… audi lover Haha thats funny nintendo have been running a business longer than you are old haha yeah you obvioulsy dont know any better Talesgirl015 Typical response from a delusional fanboy -_- Talesgirl015 @Audi Lover, tell me how does it feel to live in denial? Ace J so will the PS4 and the new Xbox be outdated? think before you answer bro Agent721 Isnt it funny how neither Sony or MSFT is announcing their price??? If its $500, each will sell well at Xmas and each will sell terribly post xmas. Too pricey, games are lackluster, no backwards compatibily, and a sub fee from MSFT, with tons of ads too boot. I own all current gen consoles plus the Wii U, and I love the PS3. But this hardcore fan is telling you they are out of their minds at that price. zimbambo Talesgirl015 is CORRECT!!! 350 bucks for a console that has a little bit better graphics than the current gen,but has worse online?WTF!!! Nintendo got lucky with the Wii as that was way under powered to the current gen and alot cheaper…………..they STUPIDLY thought they could do the same next gen,by again releasing a console that is going to be way under powered compared to the next xbox and ps4!!! Going in to the tablet market which looks like a kids fisher price toy is the worst mistake in Nintendo history…even worse than the Virtual Boy idea!!! In 2 hours the next Xbox will be shown….Bye bye Wii U!!! LOL Zorpix worse online? Somebody’s never been on Miiverse jlenoconel You’re being a little too harsh, although I do agree with you on the pricing. Who’s going to buy a console that only rivals the current gen, at $300-400 a pop. Its insane. The console should be $300 tops. Zorpix God damn it why is everyone so upset this is a PATTERN it happens all the time. 3DS, PS3, 360, ALL NEW CONSOLES NEED TIME TO ADAPT GOD FUCKING DAMN bizzy gie No price drop. If $400 is a cheap price for PS4, the $300 (a hundred bucks LESS) isn’t too expensive for Wii U. I’m going into this again. The Wii U is priced perfectly. zimbambo LMFAO yes it is 300 bucks for LAST GEN? get real!!!! For another 100 bucks you can get a truly NEXT GEN console with better online and features!!! HA jlenoconel I happen to agree that the Wii U is too expensive. I would never buy a console like this at $300-400 for the “deluxe” version. Far too expensive. I really want a Wii U, but not at the price it is. This is Nintendo’s biggest mistake, the pricing. bizzy gie Let me guess. Truly next gen=better graphics right? redd214 Hopefully it will be $200 by the holidays/black Friday. By then Should have a solid stable of games will pick one up for my kids. On a side note the level of delusion is so rampant on this blog its ridiculous. From both sides, the overzealous fanboys and the trolls alike. Where are the rational thinkers at?!?! ReturnoftheTruth2 I guess by rational thinkers, you must mean Nintendo spokespersons? redd214 No I mean people that realize and can admit that Nintendo has made some pretty severe blunders thus far with the Wii U but at the same time the damn thing has only been out half a year so its a bit premature to start expecting Mario on the Ps4. jlenoconel The day Nintendo franchises end up on other consoles is the day I stop playing video games. It will be a bad day when Sony and Microsoft are the only players left in the game. ReturnoftheTruth2 Lol. I guess Ashely King is the propaganda writer here. This is not a ‘price war,’ this is the end of the Wii U because they cannot sell then (even at Target!), so they have to get rid of what they have. WHen they cut a price like this without order from Nintendo – they are not likely to order anymore. Mc Robins How’s life under the bridge? Shouldn’t you be watching pre shows for xbox? jlenoconel This console is definitely overpriced. Over $300 for a console that only rivals Xbox 360 and PS3 in capabilities? Really? Now, I’m not dissing the Wii U for being “underpowered,” but I am criticizing the price. Why so expensive? Agent721 Tablet. Potemkin 50 dollar tablet that is… Potemkin Yes! Drop the price to US$200! Mdog xbox and ps4 are going to own wii u. Sorry its just a fact. DemonRoach The basic isn’t worth 200 bucks. The hard drive is too small to even install updates for games, and nobody is going to buy a dedicated hard drive for the system. DemonRoach let alone you need to archaic wii motes to play two player in most games, and the system doesn’t even come with wiimotes. It’s a laughing stock.
