target store

It’s no secret that with so many people doing their holiday shopping at this time of year that large retailers are an appealing target for hackers and thieves. US retail giant Target has recently confirmed that they are currently investigating a data breach involving up to 40 million of their customers’ credit and debit card accounts.

This breach involves nearly all Target locations nationwide and affects customers who shopped with them from between November 27th and December 15th. It involves the theft of  the data stored on the magnetic stripe of cards used at the stores, so it’s unlikely that the breach would affect any customers who’ve shopped at Target’s online stores. Here’s what Krebs on Security had to say about the type of data stolen:

The type of data stolen — also known as “track data” — allows crooks to create counterfeit cards by encoding the information onto any card with a magnetic stripe. If the thieves also were able to intercept PIN data for debit transactions, they would theoretically be able to reproduce stolen debit cards and use them to withdraw cash from ATMs.

In a statement Target claims it “alerted authorities and financial institutions immediately after it was made aware of the unauthorized access, and is putting all appropriate resources behind these efforts.” But still, any Wii U Daily readers who purchased anything at a Target store during or since Black Friday should closely monitor their credit or debit card accounts, which may have been compromised.

wtf is this on a wii u news site?

    • Ninja Pirate

There has been numerous articles of Wii U deals for games at Target in the past.
If people went there to buy their games after reading those articles, it’s definitely something people should know.

      • Ninja Pirate

Not sure why I’d get downvoted for that one o.O

    • Because Target had a lot of electronic and video game deals, including ones for the Wii U, going on during the time of the theft so readers of Wii U Daily who bought holiday gifts during that time period might be affected by this.

      • Alexander Kleinwechter

So why doesnt wii u daily then make a post about the electronic shop here in sweden whenever something is hacked or stolen. There are many wii u fans here in sweden! but of course it isnt interesting because it actually has nothing to do with wii u news, that it got hacked may be interesting but you could spend that time on making a more useful post!

        • Shota

maybe they will do. if it’s a big company that is

        • greengecko007

It may not apply to you, but who’s to say it doesn’t apply to someone else? And no offense, but the US population > Sweden’s population, so of course articles that apply strictly to the US are going to be more common than articles that only apply to Sweden.

          • Alexander Kleinwechter

My point was it is a unesseccary post. Yeah maybe it affects some but it would be better if they would take that effort into something else, i know maybe its a quick post, but i come here for wii u. It doesnt have anything to do with the wii u at all, not sales, not new games. Maybe wii u daily should also include all the robberies that happen in the US that has a wii u in the store! Because it could in some way affect you if you are in that store that exact moment. lol i think i got my point across!

          • greengecko007

That’s just a selfish mindset to have. Do you honestly think this article is stopping them from reporting on Wii U news? This website has several reporters.

Additionally, if this article is so meaningless to you, why bother wasting your time to come here? You say you want Wii U news, well there are plenty of other articles.

Wii U Daily has already explained that for journalistic integrity, they are reporting this because they posted an article recommending Target’s deals, therefore, Wii U Daily helped point people to this store.

Again, it’s definitely not “unnecessary” just because it doesn’t apply to you. 40 million credit card numbers threatened? To put that into perspective for you, imagine everyone in Sweden having their credit card compromised… more than 4 times.

          • Alexander Kleinwechter

Well, i think we just have different perspectives in this whole situation!

          • simkenno

Put it this way, if your mum, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, friends or any family shopped in target recently YOU would care. Just because your not American does not mean you can dismiss this as not news worthy. Im not from America yet im concered, for those who may be affected especially this close to Christmas.
Just have some consideration for those other than yourself.

        • TCar

What a stupid reply. Send a news tip to them if it needs reporting on. Also, how es hat you bring up affect 40 million people?

    • Schultz38

Here’s another reasons: Because they (the writers) are nice people.

Why does someone need a reason to be nice?

    • simkenno

Because the staff here are considerate and know that people will buy consoles from target aswell as other gifts. Its being helpful and watching out for their fans, that’s why πŸ™‚

    • I had Colin write this piece for Wii U Daily because Target is a popular place for Black Friday deals and we essentially advertised them a few weeks ago. It’s important for readers to note if they took advantage of the deals we wrote about, they could be at risk. It’s called being responsible.

      • Speedy Petendo

        It’s called lifting news from

If it’s good enough for them to post, we might as well re-post it a few hours later. Right?

        • BuhBuhBoo

lifted this piece of news from The Verge, even though they could have taken other Nintendo related articles the site wrote up. Seriously, unless you know how the process works, then shut up.

        • greengecko007

News spreads, which is precisely the point. What does it matter where the information came from or who reported on it first? If information could only be obtained from whoever found out something first, it would be very difficult to find out anything.

      • Majora’s Mask

        oh that makes sense

    • majora :D

      Calm down, me

    • Denvy

I agree. Not Wii U or even Nintendo related “news”. Slow news day I think. Wonder if Nintendo will post this to their site.

      • cThreep

Considering Wii U Daily posted like 15 Wii U related articles yesterday and have already posted a few today I’m not too concerned about there not being enough Nintendo news. They’re just giving us a heads up πŸ™‚

        • Denvy

One way of looking at it. Considering basically it was from one Direct, it could have been condensed to one post.

          • True, we probably could’ve, but then it would’ve been kinda hard to sift through one giant article to find the details you want, as opposed to sectioning it all out. That way, you can just click on the articles that interest you πŸ™‚ I suppose lumping them together would be easier on us, but a bit more annoying for you guys

          • Denvy

Wouldn’t be annoying for me, personally. I watched the direct anyway and sat through things that didn’t interest me πŸ˜‰ Anyhow, I’m coming off as argumentative. I’ve gotta stop πŸ˜€

          • XD At least you know when to stop πŸ˜› Yeah, i sat through (or buffered through…) the “meh” parts of the direct too. I guess we just thought it’d be nice to spare some people πŸ˜›

    • lonewolf88

idk but it helped ALOT i would had never know about this if it wasn’t for this site.

  • simkenno

Now this is why I love this site, Im not from America myself therefore this does not affect me BUT many others may be affected by this and could have been completely unaware of this without the help of the great staff here at WiiUDaily.

Thanks for taking the time to inform us of this and hopefully all will be sorted ASAP, please don’t let this affect anyone’s Christmas. Happy Christmas and Game on guys. Mario 3d World awaits me πŸ™‚

  • Sdudyoy

Eesh, I don’t know the last time I shopped there, man I hope this gets cleared up fast.

  • Mithiragi

Phew. I’m safe. I shopped there yesterday.

  • gamesplayswill

This is why I love being British. B3

    Seriously though, this is bad…

  • Justin OrdoΓ±ez

My Lord, I bought Lucky Charms @ Target last week because I had a craving and was too lazy to walk two more blocks to the grocery store. Now my life could be over.

    • Christopher Acuna

      Not So Lucky…..Charms…..

  • iamserious

    Aww dang it! πŸ™

  • joke’s on them, I dont have any money

    • Laud

      Overdraft fees dude..

I was broke one time right, and then I got hit with an overdraft fee which pretty much means that I had to get to $0 just to get back to broke status.

Sigh, that was the day a snickers bar cost me $33.14. Learned my lesson though.

      • yeah, those are a bitch :/ Last month, I realized I had about 6 bucks left in my account, and I was like “Shit, I’m getting charged for Hulu+ soon… Eh, I’ll fix it tomorrow”. Next day, I open up lappy, got billed about an hour before I did so.

What happened was, my checking was dry, but savings had money, so they transferred just enough out of savings to cover my ass + five dollars. Gave Hulu their money and then the 5 bucks vanished. Sucked, but overdrawing could’ve been a lot worse. I’m happy with how they handled it, even though I was out 5 bucks

        • Nathan Verbois

I greatly dislike banks. I don’t even want to begin to get into why most today are essentially…well, I’ll let this little cartoon explain instead.

  • AAAkabob

    YAY for online shopping!

  • SuperCatracho

I bought my 3DS XL yesterday but with cash. After taxes it cost $161 with change.

    • Mithiragi

I bought it there with a credit card but it only affects those who shopped from Nov 27th to Dec 15th, so we’re safe either way lol

  • JAYCEE989

As some one who shops at target almost twice a week…. This made my heart drop… Already talked to my bank and they have all my accounts on watch if they see any evidence of fraud they will freeze my account and take further action. If you are like me, contact your bank immediately.

    • DragonSilths

No, after all the hard work the criminals went through to get those peoples money, let them have it they deserve it….
Seriously though everyone should just have all their money in a vault in their house or under their mattress lol. CASH FOR EVERYTHING.

      • JAYCEE989

Can’t put cash in my computer, Amazon wont allow it I already tried lol

  • DragonSilths

Always pay with cash. Simple solution.

  • Rinslowe

The flip side of being tech savvy. Some mothers do have’em….

  • Psytrix

    Thats. gotta. sting.

  • bizzy gie

Luckily I don’t shop at Target. Walmart FTW!
