Super Smash Bros Wii U
Nintendo announced via their latest Nintendo Direct segment that Super Smash Bros Wii U and for the 3DS is now co-developed by the guys over at Namco Bandai. The development will be split and Namco Bandai will do most of the work. Following Nintendo’s announcement, producer Masaya Kobayashi said that Namco has put their best teams at work on the Wii U and 3DS titles, teams which have previously worked on fighting games such as Tekken and Soul Calibur. According to Kobayashi, they’re looking to make the “most powerful Super Smash Bros” game to date. Nintendo isn’t known for co-operating on their major franchises, opting to develop those in-house. As far as we know, this will be the first time Nintendo is working on together with another studio on a major title. In this case, it’s two games; Super Smash Bros Wii U and Super Smash Bros 3DS.

Last week, Nintendo game designer Masahiro Sakurai, who’s head of development on the new Smash Bros titles, said that Super Smash Bros Wii U is “years away” and that they just started development. He urged fans to “please be patient”. The new title is expected to be released sometime in 2014.

  • Wii Uoops!

2014 is a number I can live with!

    “most powerful Super Smash Bros”
    Sounds like great news 🙂

    • Pretzels

Hell yeah I like the sound of that. I can’t wait.

I like the idea of Nintendo working with Bandai to codevelop Smash bro. This will allow Smash to be even bigger and better. More characters, stages etc etc.

  • Jerm1234

Hopefully dragonball z and naruto characters will be in this one then! Since Bandai/Namco makes Shoenjump games.

  • uPadWatcher

I don’t mind about it. Releasing a new Super Smash Bros. U title (also for 3DS [original and XL]) in 2014 seems be very reasonable. I’m sure that Project Sora and Namco-Bandai will do their very best in developing the mother of all SSB for the next generation.

  • Swic11

I hope this quickens the development time if anything. I am also wondering if this is a good thing because with other companies helping will try to push their ideas in the game and that could be a bad thing.

    • Alienfish

Sakurai is still in charge of the project so I don’t think there will be anything to worry about. The people making this game have years of experience making some of the most hardcore fighting games out there and I think adding some hardcore to Smash would only make it better for hardcore players.

    Nintendo + Capcom= LoZ: Minish Cap= good
Nintendo + Team Ninja= Metroid: Other M= Meh
Nintendo + Sega= Mario and Sonic: Olpyimcs Games=Mini games!
Nintendo + Namco Bandai= Super Smash Bros. Wii U=….only time will tell…

    • Fresnokila

Haha when I read the article I thought the same thing..not to mention others like Sega and F-Zero..etc…

It surely isn’t the first time Nintendo has cooperated with other companies on their mayor titles

  • Matt

2014? More like 2016. Let’s not get crazy here.

    • Wii Uoops!

Brawl was made only two years after the Wii release, so who knows?

      • Madara

Did development start a few months before the console released, or had it been in development for an extendsive amount of time before the Wii was released? Also, I wouldn’t go off Brawl’s development time since there’s only one Smash Bros. per generation, you’d expect a large leap in features, among other things with each installation which would add to development time.

  • AwayToHit

    2014 ?!?!?! …AWESOME :O

  • Colton

Don’t worry, Nintendo will always make other great games to fill the gap between now & then like Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros U, Whatever Zelda game, Metroid, F-Zero, Just Dance 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2,& GTA 5. It shouldn’t be as long as they said it was because 2 companies are working on it. We just need to hope for the best. Go big N!

  • Hi8us

Nintendo has also worked with namco on starfox assault for gamecube and with sega for f-zero gx/ax. Since sony has copied nintendo’s smash bros. game design for playstation all-stars i bet nintendo is working with namco to make this game very different from previous smash titles. It will probably be a more competitive and solid fighter this time around more in line with the tournament fighting circuit. sony trying to copy smash will only hurt them in the end.

    • SilentBates

ugh i hate to say it but i have to at least test out that ssb rip off. my friend is a die hard sony fan and he loves ssb and he gots it fully pre-ordered and wants me to try it…ill let u know how bad it is when it comes out (which is like forever away so ill probably forget)

  • 3ds guy

This will be amazing 2014 and 15will be wen wii u hits its full potential i will be getting the 3ds and wii u version

    • dbzfan9000

i will be getting both too!

  • gNat

Does this mean Pac Man and Dig Dug are Possible characters ?

  • ThunderBlaze78

Namco? This could mean getting Pacman on the game!

  • lalu

No actually they co developed Metroid: other M with Tecmo to create team Ninja: Nintendo + tecmo

  • Thrasher 1x

namco is just doing what they are told and not calling any shots

  • Colton

In the end, SSB4 will be the best fighting game of it’s generation!

  • wtf

@Thrasher 1x you act like they DON’T HAVE MINDS. Like OF COURSE the game is going to be infullnce by namco and will MOST LIKELY have guest stars and SSB needs a more COMPETIVE FEEL to it like tekken and so for

  • wirby

The only thing I am worried about is if the core gameplay is changed drastically. Like if they add button strings, combo meters, long combo memorization or something along those lines. I just want it to play like Smash Bros. has always played. With simple controls for anyone to play but deep enough to be competitive.

  • Reo

I wonder if this means the story mode will be all crazy like NamcoXCapcom, was…
and with that NamcoXCapcomXSega game on the horizon, who knows what this could mean to this Smash Bros. title…

  • Norm the Conqueror

    Zelda Oracle games, anyone?

  • Slipsevenfold

I really hope Namco can make an awesome SSB game!

  • Princess Rage

Just so everyone knows, Nintendo isn’t working with Namco Bandai. Namco Bandai and Sakurai are doing all the work, which means that a game about Nintendo is not actually being developed by Nintendo (at all). How sad.
Hal Laboratories really should have been the primary developer for this game.

  • You know who should be included in the new Smash Bros. game: Pac-Man! Cause Namco did develop the Pac-Man World series so, why not?
