Remember the rumor last week that Super Smash Bros. would launch with NFC support for various figurines? According to Nintendo UK, that’s not a confirmed title for the NFC figures that Nintendo recently talked about. Nintendo UK reiterated that while Satoru Iwata did discuss NFC figurines with the technology, that Super Smash Bros. has yet to be confirmed one of them. We assume that means Nintendo isn’t happy about the potential leak and if it is true, we’ll hear the official news at E3 next month.

There has, however, not been any specific announcements regarding which software titles for Nintendo platforms will use this functionality. We have no other announcements to make at this time.

This sounds more like attempting to mop up a rumor rather than dispelling it entirely, which is fine by us. If Super Smash Bros. does incorporate NFC figurines in a way that doesn’t mean some fighters are exclusive to those who buy the figures, we’d be fine with that.

I’d prefer them not to lock fighters through figurines.

    • Yeah if anything I said doing assist trophies through figurines would provide hardcore people incentives to buy them, especially if you wanted a specific assist trophy.

      • companyoflosers

there are too many of those to make it a viable product because theyd have to manufacture and distribute so many different ones unless they just did that with the ones that are the rarest in game.

    • “Sean” jjbredesen

Yeah, it would like if you simply have one that has your profile on it and your custom movesets etc. That way you could bring your character wherever you want and battle anyone on any system with your profile.

But buying one for a character would just be as bad as adding micro transactions to the game!

  • E3 can’t come soon enough.

    • Shota

      2 weeks to go

  • Jason

C’mon Nintendo, don’t be bloodsucking vultures like Activision and Disney.

    • I like my Skylanders, thank you very much >.>

  • Christian Schoff

Well it’s still a great idea. Give me an optional Sora figurine. I’ll pay 5 bucks to beat Mario’s fat butt with a Keyblade. Me and Luigi and can team up to destroy him. Final Smash can be Final Form and dual wielding Oblivion and Oathkeeper.

  • Jack

I would love to have a figure of Skull Kud from Majoras Mask. 🙂

      Just edit your comment 😛

      • Jack

Lol thank you. Idk how I didn’t see that. I feel stupid now. 😛

  • companyoflosers

please, no nfc figurines! its a really dumb gimmick and it basically microtransactions only not so micro because theres the added cost of a statue thats gonna do nothing but gather dust on a shelf.

    • Clel

And for people who have to move a lot (like me) it’s more stuff to travel with.

  • The_fuzz_buzz

I knew it wasn’t going to be. Nintendo wouldn’t ruin one of their best titles by making us buy those stupid figures just to play a game. You know, that game we’ve all been waiting for for ever now? I don’t think they would spring that on us this soon before release.

  • Fierce-Deity Link

i truly hope they don’t… one thing i enjoy about nintendo games is the fact that you can unlock stuff within the game without buying dlc… remember 3d world? how if you did everything you unlocked the last level [which was rather hard i might add] … no to this idea… nooo >.>

    • Santiago

would you get angry if tomorrow they added dlc for 3d world? I would greet it with a big smile!
And talking about figurines, what if they add features to 3d world as well, would you not like that?

      • Scott

If it was new content, I would be ecstatic about DLC for 3D World.

The point is that it’s becoming more and more often that DLC is being abused. When you buy a disc, it’s incomplete- you have to pay even more to get what should be the standard game.

NFC figures would be just like that. You already own the content on the disc, but you have to pay more money just to use it.

      • Fierce-Deity Link

i don’t recall saying i’d be mad if they did this in smash brothers… would i be annoyed? sure i would… if they are talking so early on about possible dlc by using figurines then i have a problem.. if this was brought up 6 months after or a year after i’d be ecstatic.. with 3d world it’s been a while.. so yeah.. i wouldn’t mind.. but again.. this is mentioned before the game is even released.. remember mass effect 3? how you had to buy dlc to actually see the ending.. and this was day one of the release.. so yeah…

  • LevenThumps

I agree that they shouldn’t be used to unlock fighters. If the NFC unlocked skins for a character, I would be fine with that.

    • Magnus Gonzalez

what if the game is $29.99 with one playable character (Mario) and once you unlock new characters you can purchase these nfc for $5.99. Therefore you can pick and choose which ones you are willing to pay for to play?

      • LevenThumps

I wouldn’t go for that. Under that deal, you would have seven characters to choose form once the price got up to the price of the full game that’s coming out.

From the small amount of info we’ve got on NFC so far, it looks like the games the figures interact with are entirely complete games on their own, and the NFC figures are additional content if you want to purchase them, which I am fine with should this be the case.

  • Christian Schoff

*sigh* Dozens of terrible companies making awful DLC has made you people forget what real DLC is. Real DLC, good DLC is when they think of something they were unable to put in the original game and want you to have it but if it took X amount of time to make, they charge a bit for it. 2 bucks for a new character is good DLC.

  • Gabe Chorley

If they decide to lock content behind a pay wall in smash bros. I will be very sad.

  • lonewolf88

hey if they turn this into more a dlc feature like add more characters I would be all for it but i also want them to fit as many characters as they could before making them figurines to add later.

  • Scott

All I have to say is this:

  • Rob

the entire NFC is just stupid. its one of the most expensive things to make and all it does is.. scan toys lol.
but DLC is not that bad. when they release all characters, why wouldnt they make some more of them ? i see no problem with DLC, as long as it’s not required for overall game quality

    • Magnus Gonzalez

NFC will sell. Whether the majority of us (hardcore Nintendo gamers) like it is besides the point. Nintendo needs to appeal to children more (yes, it seems they have lost them to tablets) and give people reason to buy the Wii U for their kids. If done right, either for Smash, Pokémon or some new IP we aren’t aware of, it will sell and that is what is important right now

  • palomino blue

NFC figures is a fine idea for a game where your character makes progress that you might want to use on a friend’s console or maybe transfer to a 3DS version. This isn’t really conducive to a game like SSB because characters don’t level or grow throughout the game. I’d much rather Nintendo hold off on this for a full Pokemon release or a game more like that. SSB really isn’t a good venue for these figures.

    • J_Joestar

at the same time though, the game is going to incorporate moveset customizations which is something that would be viable for saving and transferring to another console for short term game sessions at a friend’s house or a tournament.

  • Pokémon Fan

    I’d prefer no figurines.

  • Mario

Why are people complaining about this when it’s pretty obvious that these figures are gonna sell regardless if they’re bought for the WiiU or not? Also, if you guys are so afraid to buy these figures in order to unlock characters in SSB4, then just don’t. Try to unlock them like in previous installments, By playing!

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

Just Hope so there will be NFC’s for Smash 4
