In a recent update via Miiverse, Super Smash Bros. developer Masahiro Sakurai issued an update that will likely make many competitive Super Smash Bros. players very happy. The update deals with changes to the way ledge grabbing works, making ledge-hoarders likely a thing of the past.

There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario’s grab.

What do you think of these changes?

    Of course its good.

    • ReggieRulez?

Thumbs up for the username 😀 Imagine Magnus in Smash Bros. 😀

  • D.M.T

Just announce a new Nintendo Direct already!!! We need a new Direct this month or early next month.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Why so eager to hear about the discontinuing of Wii U? Because thats what its going to be about.

      • D.M.T

If you say so Fagnus 🙂

        • Magnus Eriksson

Why do you call me fag-nus? Do you have anything against homosexuals or something? Actually homophobia would fit quite good into your pattern of hate. So it doesnt surprise me really.

          • D.M.T

You have been trolling me for weeks Fagnus so I thought its time to troll you back. If you wanna believe that I’m homophobic then go ahead. Truth is you dont know me, you are just judging from a comment i made.

          • darkcreap

‘You have been trolling me for weeks Fagnus’

OK, now I see what you meant in a comment above. Not my bussiness whatever happened between you two.

        • Skelterz

          D.M.T = Degenerate Maggot Tallywacker…

P.S tallywacker means penis, O’Doyle Rules!!!

          • D.M.T

Why do you feel the need to defend another man on the internet? You do know that Magnus is a troll right? You idiot

          • ICHI

I can see why people would back you up calling them idiots so readily.

          • Skelterz

            im The Troll Now Nigger

          • D.M.T

Nice!!! And now I’m gonna try to have you banned for being a racist piece of shit 🙂

          • Nintendo Dragon

Still not as good as Fagnus.

          • Skelterz

            sony ftw

        • Mendoza Manuel

everyone…stop being such meanies…I get nervous

      • gamesplayswill

I will eat my hat if so. I will actually eat it and upload a video of it to YouTube. Honestly.

        • darkcreap

He’s just ironic. He likes to say that kind of things from time to time to piss off fanboys. Trolling can be fun from time to time in these forums.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Indeed. Too many fans here I feel are too serious, let alone easy to piss off. It’s no wonder trolls stick around. Lol.

      • darkcreap

It seems not a lot of people with a good sense of humour around here.

        • D.M.T

Trust me, we do have a good sense of humor. The reason why we aren’t laughing is because Magnus is not funny at all.

          • darkcreap

I guess so, but I think he does not troll in a Truthteller-esque way all the time either. That guy was annoying as hell.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Actually no, you are never funny. A typical example of this is your homophobic pun on my name into “Fagnus”. Its kind of childish, and hateful towards homosexuals as you imply that calling me gay is an insult of some sort. You should be ashamed of yourself. 🙂

          • bizzy gie

What does homophobic mean? I only want you to answer my question.

          • Magnus Eriksson
          • bizzy gie

I’d rather you put it into words. I’ve Googled the word before, but the definitions are always so technical and differ amongst sites.

          • Morphballs

Homophobic means fear of homosexuals or homosexual behavior

          • bizzy gie

See. That’s the problem. Homo means the same or identical not gay.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Homo sexual or homo philia – sexuaity towards rhe same (sex), love towards the same (sex). Its an already accepted term. Unproblematic.

          • bizzy gie

It being a connotation doesn’t excuse it being improper grammar.

In order for homo to have some relation to gay or lesbian, it has to precede ‘sexual’. When it doesn’t do that, it just means the same or identical.

Unless people use the derogatory slang term ‘homo’ to insult those against homosexuality which be very hypocritical.

The term also isn’t listed as a medical (real) phobia.

Even if the definition matched the properties of the word, isn’t it kind of self-absorbed to say that everybody who hates or is against you is afraid of you.

But I guess the point is to throw an insult in their face since they have a different opinion from you that you don’t like.

Anyway, I won’t drag this on. Just saw that word.

          • Magnus Eriksson

I see that you confuse language as words being names on things, however this is wrong. Language is purely pragmatic, and words are defined according to how we use them in reality – everyday life that is. But for the fun of it. You try to refute an accepted definition by going to ethymology, by pointing out how the word phobia is used in medicine/psychology. Thats kind of wrong on many levels. First of all the word phobia stems from the greek phobos, which means fear. There is a certain link between hatred and fear, especially when it comes to topics such as homophobia, islamophobia, judeophobia etc. That doesnt mean that its a diagnosis in the medical sense, like agoraphobia, arachnophobia or claustrophobia (fear of crowds, spiders and narrow spaces). Still there is one relationship between the one definition used in psychology and the sociological term homophobic – that is irrationality. The fears are irrational. When you deem words as “gay” or “fag” as something negative, you clearly are understanding the terms in relation to fear in one way or another. Either a christian-like view where you view “gay-ness” as something threatening to family values, or in a much simpler sense where the thought of gays “make you gross” or “disgust” you. So no, you are very very wrong.

          • bizzy gie

I’m not wrong at all. Take notice to how your entire reply focuses on the ‘phobia’ aspect when I only spent one sentence on the matter.

Hate and fear are not the same thing. And something being negative doesn’t mean fear is automatically somewhere in there.

Names aren’t words. I’ve known this for while. Homophobe isn’t a name of something. It’s a term that describes something.

Phobias are irrational fears as you stated, but there’s no proof that people who claim to hate gays or are against homosexuality are scared of them in the first place.

Homophobe is used to describe those who HATE homosexuality not those who are afraid of it although there may be a few who are scared (but not very many I assume).

If someone were to call someone a fag, chances are that they’d be angry with that person moreover anything else. I can’t see the word being used in relation to fear at all.

The point is that the definition doesn’t match the properties of the word very much if at all.

But I know logic and reason kind of go out of the window and hypocrisy and double standards fill their place when it comes to the subject of homosexuality.

          • Skelterz

pay no attention he calls you a fag but he has like a super faggy wrestler/MMA fighter in his picture he clearly wants to suck butter off that fighter.

          • Skelterz

Hey my names dmt and i take forums sites like this one so super seriously literally i have nothing better to do braaaa im dmt fagnus is sucha trolling fag braaaaa yeahhh. Your the fag

          • D.M.T

Keep defending your boyfriend Fagnus braaa

          • Magnus Eriksson

So, clearly you are homophobic. Are you racist too?

          • Skelterz

            wrestling is for homo’s bra

      • starwars360

Will you leave D.M.T alone and respect to players who enjoy time here for comments. You have no rights to tell others what you want to do. You need to learn being grow up. I read you said about gay here. You are stupid fools person. People doesn’t have be gay because of comments. You only want trolling everyone because you are Nintendo hater. Anyway. Nintendo don’t care about you said because they will still around and you keep crying over and over and over. You always loser!!!

        • Magnus Eriksson

        • Skelterz

          leave BRITNEY ALONE!!!!!

      • Guest

Looks like Magnus is becoming the new Truthteller…

      • Tiago Gomes

        Stfu man!!!!

        • Magnus Eriksson

Lol! Like I would listen to you 😀

      • Kirbyomega

I know you’re just playing around but they don’t so maybe you should let up on the hate

        • Magnus Eriksson

          Im never hating. 🙂

  • Ony

I know I may get downvotes for that, but this game don’t hype me at all.

    Sorry 🙁

    • Magnus Eriksson

      Why? 😀

      • Ony

Feels like a Melee HD, nothing more.
(With more characters and now better balancing, but still the same game in HD)

        • D.M.T

If you’re not hyped for this game then fine, you’re allowed to have a different opinion but you can’t call it a Melee HD because we dont know much about this game.

          • Skelterz

Hey braa chill braa he was speculating braa keep your fists to yourself braa. your mum wears a bra braa.

          • Ony

That’s basically why I’m not hyped, maybe later, or at the release of the game I will be hyped.

Maybe I work too much and don’t have time for video games, and that’s why I’m feeling shit about games nowadays D:
(or maybe the VG industry is shit and I’m sick of it.)

        • BIG Franky

well, the fact that Melee was in fact superior to Brawl doesn’t necessarily make your statement a horrible thing. but at the end of the day, aren’t all releases of new iterations of games, whether its Halo 4 or MK8 basically trumped up versions of previous releases? obvi SSB isn’t going to veer far from what made it amazing.

          • Relick

Whenever someone says Melee > Brawl they can never justify it beyond the mechanics in Brawl being different to Melee (which doesn’t mean it is worse, just different).

There is so much in Brawl that makes the game better in every way that I cannot see how people think Melee is better except when wearing their nostalgia goggles.

Perhaps it is just that social phenomenon where the second in the series is held as the best and the third the worst.

          • PS4/WiiU

            did you play melee?
Brawl had more stuff and it has a lot of stuff that are way better such as way more characters.
But melee was still better because the technical side was 100 times better. just hitting an opponent in melee is better than in brawl. It feels way different if you play both

          • Relick

I did play Melee and I loved it. Although Brawl didn’t feel that much slower, but even still it makes that smash off the edge that much more satisfactory if you’ve been beating them up for longer.

          • Sdudyoy

I like all three of the Smash bros games for different reasons,

the N64 version is good as it started an awesome series of games.

Melee may not have had as good of graphics or as many characters but I liked the levels in this game the most, alot of the levels in this Melee are very fun, but they aren’t so flashy that they distract from the gameplay, Melee also had some of the funnest game play, the Mechanics were far faster than Brawl, the game though had tons of glitches, there were clone characters witch made if feel like there where less characters than there where.

Brawl had tons of content tons of characters with little clones, tons of fun levels including some Melee ones, almost all of the Characters had entirely different feels, the game itself wasn’t very glitchy, I love how you can change up tunes from all sorts of Nintendo games, I hope in the next game you can customize it so you can a Pokemon song in a Mario level Ect, but Brawl did lead to alot of the homebrewing problems the Wii had, the game felt alot slower than Melee, the Subspace emissary was to long and I wish we could have gotten something more similar to Melee’s adventure mode in this one, one of the biggest things of this game is It’s online matching, unlike alot of people I’ve never been in a bad match, so I can’t say anything bad about it.

I like all three games for different reasons, Brawl is the best game overall but I still prefer to play Melee, or sometimes I feel like Brawl, I can’t say I’m Nostalgic because I played and bought both games at the same time.

          • ICHI

It does mean its better if the person saying it preferred that way of playing, or can I not say I prefer the counter system in Street Fighter Third Strike over SFIV cause they are different games ……..and one is clearly better.

          • Relick

No you can’t my opinion is fact.

          • Fierce-Deity Link

i’ll give my input on this.. the reason people say melee >> brawl is because brawl was dumbed down for casual players [sakurai himself said something along the lines of not wanting ssb to be played competitively]… random tripping could cost you the much, so even if you’re stomping on someone they can miraculously win cause u were tripping.. most characters were light so it is way more difficult to create combos, and the there was no true hit stun.. in brawl if you throw a character most of the time they can attack right away to keep you away, thus not leaving much room for combos.. what made melee and ssb great is that if you got a certain hit you were 99% guaranteed a small combo unless they di was perfect or close it.. also, u didn’t have mindgames in brawl.. in melee the wavedash and dash dance allowed you to try and bait out an attack and in that moment of lag you could punish them… competitively you can’t play brawl because metaknight ruins the game and is too op… or you pick ice climbers for the infinite throw… melee as far as competitiveness goes is vastly superior.. in terms of depth with just gameplay modes brawl wins

          • Relick

Ok, perhaps you were expecting Brawl to be a fully fledged fighting game then? When it wasn’t meant to be. It was meant to be Mario Kart style fighting game i.e. random things happen that mean you have to adjust if you want to win and you can never hold the lead for too long without constant application of skill. I’d say you can still be competitive with Brawl, just as you can be competitive with Mario Kart. I think maybe you are focusing on all the times that the opponent supposedly gets an unfair advantage and you can’t quite stop it, when actually you should be thinking about all the times that you have stopped their advantage and then you should realise that requires a heck of a lot more skill and competitiveness than getting a combo in Melee ever did.

If Meta-knight is OP, you have two valid options – play as Meta-knight or learn how to beat him :).

          • Fierce-Deity Link

no.. i never expected that… that is why you can play with items so randomness can happen.. even the original ssb can be played competitively without items, but ssbb is just not meant that way… u can hardly get combos because the hit stun is terrible.. meaning, ur opponent is hardly vulnerable unless you are a super op character like metaknight who can create combos.. in the other installments even low tiers can get combos on top tier characters, but it’s a pain to even get true combos on any character cause they can attack back right away.. it’s basically, get hits til u can deal the last blow.. in the other you could truly combo … ssb is a party game, but it has also been able to be played competitively.. sakurai didn’t want that so he nerfed brawl.. look it up… not saying brawl is a bad game.. just that competitively it is inferior even the original… also, it’s no fun trying to find a character that can beat him.. only ice climbers with their infinite chain grab can pull it off for the most part… this is why melee and ssb is better balanced… mid tier characters can actually beat the likes of top tiers and combo them… not trying to call brawl a bad game.. overall, it’s the best so far, but it’s terrible for competitive playing..

          • Ony

I prefere Brawl, maybe that’s part of why I’m not hyped and find this new one relatively looking like Melee HD 😮

        • Relick

Perhaps because they haven’t told us anything except it is super smash bros.

The Brawl dojo was much better for hype.

          • Ony

            Yes it is

            and yes it was 😀

        • ICHI

I’m feeling a bit like thus but I think its because I haven’t seen enough of the game yet. The only thing I’m really worried about is almost all the stages seem to be a pretty background with 3 platforms in the middle. I’m sure I will love the game but thats just blind faith at the main.

        • Pikachief

“Feels like Melee HD” I KNOW! That’s why I’m so hyped!! lol

        • Lusunup

Its like saying fighting games are always the same but with enhanced graphics, new playable characters, more balanced characters, new movesets for some characters
lol isn’t that way they make sequels for games?

    • Rick van der Linde

And you actually got downvotes because it doesn’t hype you? What is wrong with you people, other people can’t dislike something you like? All of my friends absolutely love Fifa,
I bought it, tried it multiple times but it just isn’t my game, you don’t have to like something because everone else likes it, get over it.

      • Ony

I don’t dislike the game, it’ll be a day one (as all Nintendo games) for me, I’m just not WOHOOOO to each news on the game, that’s all :/

        (Thanks sir :3)

        • Rick van der Linde

I share the feeling, all my hype is depleted anyway for Mario Kart 😛

  • Deadpool U

Awesome! The more competitive the better SSB is type of game stratagies pop inside your head and quickly so things like this are very easy to accept.

    • Yousif Alromaithi

I expect them to shows us a great innovation in the series. What I am saying I can’t wait to spend 100 hours on that game just please Nintendo release it on summer.

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

    Happy about this. 😛

  • darkcreap

What is ledge grabbing? Sorry, I am not familiar with Smash Bros.

    • Daniel Carvalho

In Super Smash Bros., instead of lowering your opponents’ HP bar, each attack increases their Damage Percentage. The more damage they have accumulated, the higher they fly when they receive a stronger attack. Your objective is to make other players fall off the stage or fly far enough off-screen to be eliminated.

Edge grabbing is when you grab one of the edges of the stage, either because you were thrown out of it but managed to get back, although not high enough to land on the stage; or because you have to climb a platform during the match.

In Brawl, grabbing an edge gives you a period of immunity and also prevents other players from grabbing that same edge. During the chaos of having 4 players against each other, it’s rather common having 2 or more players mid-air trying go back to the main platform of the stage, where the player to grab the edge first get damage immunity and renders the other players incapable of saving themselves.

It’s a common strategy between the less skilled with the game to just grab any edge for the damage immunity rather then actually fighting, so it became rather overused and hated feature on the competitive scenario.

      • darkcreap

        Um, I see. Thanks!!

  • Yousif Alromaithi

What I said last year was right Nintendo never lives in the past they live for the future.

  • Justagamer

    I like this idea..Priceless.

  • RARE

I’ve been a competitive player since 2007. This makes me really really happy

  • Blue Hernandez

I just miss using Roy, he was way better than Marth.

    • Lusunup

…Really? Theres no shame in loving both..

      • Blue Hernandez

Yeah its just his powerful sword charge attack was more powerful and awesome lol and he had that combo attack that made him change colors.

        • Fierce-Deity Link

roy was vastly inferior to marth.. roy had strong smash attacks, but u could combo better with marth, and his dash dance and grab were better.. roy also had worse recovery.. lastly, both marth and roy change colors in their sword dance, soo….

          • Blue Hernandez

Yeah I guess I just really miss the strong smash attacks LOL

          • Fierce-Deity Link

well, smash attacks are moves you use when u try to read ur opponents moves cause typically they leave u vulnerable if missed [the lag].. hence why i like marth better.. using a smash attack with him and hitting with the tip of the sword has one of the best knockbacks in the game.. even if ur enemy has low percentage.. and because u have to space it perfectly you are less vulnerable

  • Sdudyoy

    He also posted this:
    “Some other changes include:
-Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
-Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.”

He didn’t say it in the post but below it.

    • rp17

That’s what I was thinking. Ashley forgot his very detailed list of how the mechanics work

  • Seth S. Scott

love this! even after all this time, multiple releases, this game is not just shipping with extra characters to make it new. well done sakurai and I cant wait to see what all the technical changes are!

  • ETeach

  • Brilliant, Sakurai! Hanging from a ledge waiting for your opponent to fall never felt like a legit k.o. Can’t wait to see how whiny the competitive Smash community react to this.

  • LevenThumps

This change has made my day. This was annoyingly used by trolls whenever I played Brawl.

  • I think it would be interesting to make this an “optional” feature for battles. That way, those who prefer the traditional gameplay can go along with it and those who prefer more competitive playing can enjoy it. That’s just my take, though. I personally look forward to this mechanics change.

  • Fierce-Deity Link

i am not sure why people are complaining about edgehogging.. tbh, if you don’t want to be in that situation then follow Isai’s advice, “don’t get hit.” on a more serious note.. only metaknight can sort of infinitely guard the edge.. otherwise, it takes skill to get ur opponent off the stage and then guard the ledge to prevent them from coming back.. it’s not cheap for the most part… if you di appropriately and such then you don’t face that situation as much.. any who, any change that makes the strategy different is ok in my book so long as it’s not stupid shite like random tripping

  • Malcolm Thomas

Guys, I finally figured it out. Nintendo is holding out on the release date of Smash Bros. so they can announce/release it on the day of E3 2014. It’s genius!
