Super Mario 3D World has been received very well here in North America and Europe, but it looks like Japan hasn’t cared for it too much. Numbers for last week’s sales in Japan are out and Super Mario 3D World debuted at number 2 on the list. What’s worse is the game doesn’t appear to be the system seller in Japan that it seems it will be here in the United States at least. The Wii U only moved 21k units in the same week, which is only up 6k units from the previous week. It was also outsold by the PS Vita. Hmm.

Well thats great πŸ˜€ GO MARIO πŸ˜€

  • Lucky for Nintendo, Mario games seem to have a fairly long life and still has some time to gain traction. Time to kick that Nintendo advertising machine into full gear and get the word out about the good reviews/reception.

  • SamusPrime

Must be Japan game tastes, if I remember Wii Party U moved more units, then SMB3DW.

    • Lusunup

Wii party U was great! it’ because they had a lot of advertisement for each tabletop game. I say there game taste is moderate.

  • Lusunup

It’s not the worst but atleast it’s top of the games!

  • Laud

It’s to be expected, the PS3 has a much larger install base, over 70 million and it only outsold by 170k.

    Wii U – 4 million install base
    PS3 – over 70 million
It’d be strange if it wasn’t outsold, honestly. It beat a ton of 3DS games too.

I was also thinking that this game is more of an overtime seller too. For example, someone buys it and then a friend comes over and sees it and then decides to get it but for that to be true we’ll have to wait and see until next week.

    • LopsidedPasta

All I have to say is that if Wii U sales don’t increase drastically by the end of 2014 with the arrival of Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, possibly X and possibly Zelda, I will be in shock. I consider the Wii U to be a sleeping giant right now. (Bonus points to whoever gets that reference)

      • darkcreap

        Xenoblade Chronicles?

      • SamusPrime

        Pearl Harbor?

        • LopsidedPasta

      • Magnus Eriksson

Its strange. Because Japan have been active with TV commercials too. Hope this doesnt indicate the reception of this game in Europe and Americas.

    • darkcreap

The actual problem is that the number of sold consoles has not increased significantly. As Ashley says, it would seem it is not a system seller. Hell, what is happening??? Not even Mario.

      • Logic

I honesty didn’t expect 3d world to become a system seller. After all, I only bought if after seeing the reviews. Prior to that, I was no where near hyped or excited for the game. Instead I thought of it as just a 3d version of New Super Mario Bros without innovation. If this game had been a new galaxy or 64, then I believe Wii U’s would be out of stock by now.

        • QuizmasterBos

I’m guessing you didn’t see any trailers beyond the first one at E3 this year. That one was very… underwhelming. But the second trailer shown during a Nintendo Direct was FAR better and THAT’S when the hype started.

From what I have heard, there are several reasons why SM3DW isn’t selling as well as it seems.

          1. It’s only physical sales, not digital. And apparently Japan is pretty big on digital sales.
          2. Install base is small for the Wii U. Nintendo needs to have more to really start pushing systems.
          3. PS4 is around at the same time.
          4. Japan likes the 2D Mario games more than the 3D. You should expect better sales from America and Europe.
          5. As Reggie stated, games like these sell really well over time. Look at Galaxy for instance. Started with 200,000 something sales in its first week, yet sold over 10 million at the end.

          • SmashFinale

PS4 isnt even released in Japan yet…

          • QuizmasterBos

Okay, so it takes two more months for that to happen, but it’s at the forefront and I expect a good amount of Japanese are simply waiting for that to come out. And there are still the other reasons I have listed.

    • Jonathan George Anaya

The article isn’t comparing software sales from one console to the other. It’s noting how Mario World isn’t pushing hardware sales. Sales for the Wii U are flat…. And Mario is suppose to be a System Seller. WiiU sales should have spiked up by 8000% with the release of such an important franchise.
Ashley does a great job of keeping her readers informed. Whether it’s good news or bad. WiiU Daily is my first stop for all news Nintendo

      • Magnus Eriksson

Agree! Also this is holiday season so the numbers seems way too low. Maybe next week will show something positive, if not then SM3DW is clearly not a system seller in Japan.

      • Felix

maybe some smart japs are already tired of the mario number 27.

Btw, put me down votes i dont care. numbers agree with me ;D

        • Reason

So much hate in one post. “I don’t care” sure you do…sure you do

          • Felix

yea i wont sleep today because you downvoted me.

        • Falcoxcalibur

What a pitiful piece of man.

        • Dez

          You’re a utilitarian, aren’t you?

          Popularity = Quantity

Given that is the case that says nothing about quality. Quality is what really matters and if people are dumb enough to keep buying EA’s games and CoD 700 let them, but when each entry of a Mario game is typically different and has been thoroughly polished it is more of a quality game instead of a rehash of the same crap yet the so called “hardcore” crowd keeps buying that garbage. Also, Utilitarianism is a pretty bad ethical theory, it might be useful for business, but it constitutes nothing of what is right or what the individual considers good.

          • Felix

sure. but no system seller this time πŸ™ lets wait 6 months for the next mario.

          • kevin

Who cares what is better or not. Because if no one buy the consoles, no company will write for it. So you could have the best mario game but that will be all you have. Just leave it up to a nintendo fanboy to say it not numbers it quantity.

Then if Mario was number it would be see it moving. But since its not, lets come up with another answer.

Twist and turns to make Nintendo appear great when they haven’t been great for years.

Pikmin3 didn’t sale because it a very short game and not work $60.
Mario Bros sold but is a horrible slap together for a launch.
Wii Sport is a horrible slap together with empty features and horrible online support.
Wii Fit U is not selling either.

Nothing that Nintendo is putting out is moving the consoles. Come on 4 mill people own Wiiu and 6 out of 10 people buy Nintendo games. For the sales to be under 100k, tells you even people that owned the WiiU is not buying Mario World.

          • Rinslowe

            Kevin, kevin, kevin…

You know you’re losing a debate when you resort to stereotyping and personal attacks…
“Just leave it up to a nintendo fanboy to say it not numbers it quantity.”

            Here’s a heads up…
Your argument provides 0% logic, that you can substantiate with tangible hard evidence outside of subjective opinion.
Your stats are flawed, because 99,500+ Wii U owners in Japan disagree in only 4 days I might add…Of actual sales.
That’s not great, but neither is it what you’re calling it. Not even close.

So, I challenge you to provide real figures, real data that supports even one of your claims. And I guarantee, I’ll be able to refute it. Simply because you can’t do it… That and reality actually disagrees with you, lad. And reality is, what it is…

      • Gabe Hoffman

Wii U was the best selling console in Japan that week though. Mario usually is more of a long term seller and a slow burner. Japan these days is much more handheld centric.. The real test will be how it performs in NA and UK

      • Rinslowe

Three weeks ago 38,000 Japanese people bought a Wii U bundle. The week after that 15,000 people in Japan did the same thing. Last week, people in Japan bought another 21,000 units (total of 4 days sales).
Those first two weeks of hardware sales would have contributed to part of that 99,500+ software sales…
I think it’s too early to say, whether or not Super Mario 3D World is a flop in Japan, when the sales spike has been consistent for nearly 4 weeks. Remember for quite some time, sales in Japan were around the 1.5 – 2K mark iirc.
(8000% was for effect I’m assuming)

        • kevin

Just like Pikmin 3, it had a bump for one week and that is really it. Wait until you see the 1st week of December, it will be back to the low 10k like it has been doing. Mario 3d world is not moving, pikmin3 at least double the console sales and mario didn’t even come close.

          • Rinslowe

You mean how Wii U has been consistently +800% up in sales for 4 weeks in a row in Japan over the weekly average since launch or?
Also in that same vein, it’s easy to say something has at least doubled a consoles sales when the average is not more than a few thousand a week, lol.
Again, in comparison and the figures don’t lie, Wii U has been many times higher than the average for weeks since WWHD.
You need to have a broader perspective to appreciate the details Kevin. Otherwise I could say with accuracy that your entire spiel is jumping the gun and way off base…
The fact Mario has failed to sell thousands upon thousands of Wii U’s does not take away from the fact that, Wii U sales are still much higher than they have ever been in Japan, or that Mario is actually selling well. Considering that only 4 days of sales data is presented here, not 7. And the figures provided do not count digital sales.
            Sorry man…

        • Chronic Gang

japan bought the wii u party thing thats what they’re into over there….they’re weird like that

      • Nintenjoe82

. I’m not trying to excuse the Wii U but the title of this article says SM3DW doesn’t move Wii U units despite the fact that the figures show that it did help to move units. Without 3D World things would probably have slid back down to less than 5000 units or worse.

    • Rinslowe

      That’s a solid point…

Japan; total PS3 sales are around 10 million vs Wii U’s 1.15 million units. LR FF: 277,000+ vs SM3DW: 99,500+ software sales…

This kind of news needs to be put into perspective a little clearer. Otherwise if using data to make a point of say; SM3DW is not the system seller in Japan many people expected… Then I think that’s a pretty ineffective way to do it, lol. Considering it’s easy enough to do the math on the current attach rate.

    • GuardiansFan

you beat me to it….considering the install base the numbers are not that bad and 100K sale in Japan is going to be what in North America and Europe? My guess is a lot more than 100K

    • greengecko007

The problem is not that 3D World isn’t the #1 selling game, but that Wii U sales did not shoot up (yet) like all the Nintendo fanboys claimed it would.

  • jjbredesen
  • CEObrainz

December will be the real game changer for the Wii U outside of Japan, with those Holiday bundles Nintendo will hopefully see the sales they want.

    • jjbredesen

Yup, they will pull a 3DS, if you know what i mean.

  • Leo

And there it goes the daily dose of doom and gloom. Courtesy from Wii U Daily with love :O)

    • CEObrainz

You’re mistaken if you think this is Doom and Gloom, it looks more like plain facts to me. If Mario doesn’t sell as well in Japan there is no reason to dress it all up and break it to you lightly, however that being said it’s not too much of a big deal yet, as I said in my post December will tell if the game truly does well or not.

    • I really get tired of people accusing me of writing doom and gloom articles because I report on facts. The sales for the Wii U this week in Japan have not moved significantly for Super Mario 3D World to be called a system seller there.

That’s likely not the case for the rest of the world, which I state in the article.

      • Leo

“The sales for the Wii U this week in Japan have not moved significantly for Super Mario 3D World to be called a system seller there” OMG lets run for the hills!!! :O)

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          Upset much?

      • Fred

Do we expect sales numbers for the US soon?

        • Sales numbers aren’t released in the US like they are in Japan. NDP here releases monthly and they don’t include digital sales. It’s a whole different ballgame.

          • SamusPrime

The Japan software numbers do include digital sales?

          • No, as far as I know nothing includes digital at this point because only Nintendo themselves have those numbers and they never talk numbers unless they’re bragging at a financial call.

          • SamusPrime

Thanks, I wonder what % of Japanese gamers do digital downloads?

          • Rinslowe

We’ll likely get those numbers during the next quarterly financial report…
I don’t think it has to do with “unless they’re bragging” although we all love to brag, it is true. I think it has more to do with waiting until the final no’s are in for each quarter.
Having said that, I’m also sure download figures would have been advertised if they had been say, 1 million in 24hrs.
            Would be worth bragging about…

          • Fred

Wait, so those Japan numbers include Digital? OUCH!

      • darkcreap

And it is nice that you report facts. Both positive and negative. This is what is cool about this web!!!

Let’s see how the thing evolves in the following weeks. It is really saddening how badly Nintendo is doing recently. The real bad thing, actually, is that it seems SM3DW is not moving enough consoles. Not even Mario is working for Nintendo this time. It is really sad.

I can’t believe this is happening.

        • SamusPrime

I think you need to see the rest of the world’s hardware numbers before you press the “panic” button.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Perhaps, but it’s still saddening numbers.

          • darkcreap

Yes. Actually, I have seen this article:

And checked with the numbers Ashley has published. Mario Galaxy 2 sold 1 million copies in Japan vs 6.36 million worldwide, so it is not necessarily that bad a number for Mario in Japan. Especially, provided that the WiiU has the lowest installation base to date.

Seems I was too pesimistic too soon.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Welcome to the club.

        • SamusPrime

But Ashley also discusses good news. I kid, I kid.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Hey, hey! I do too. When I feel like it. πŸ™‚

      • Magnus Eriksson

You do a great job Ashley. You shouldnt care about those kinds of accusations. Everyone here knows you are a Nintendo fan, that takes her job seriously and want to report on facts not fiction.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

If people just want nothing but positive news only, they should find a fanboy website. I’m sure they’ll feed them enough fictional news to keep them happy.

          • Rinslowe

I agree that people need to calm down and stop with the whole Wii U Daily conspiracy wagon, lol…

But lets not use that as a reason to make largely untrue generalisations. There are people like myself who see genuine mistakes in this article, but are not needing a fanboy website to go to because of a disagreement of opinions…

Wii U Daily has one of the best comment sections on the net today and is a great source of Wii U related information in itself.
The amount of true haters out there on this site, on any side is minimal at best.

      • jjbredesen

You do a fantastic job, don’t worry about people like this… I come her for a reason if i didnt like your articles i would be long gone.

        Keep up the good work!!

      • CEObrainz

Judging by the support from everyone else here I think it’s fair to say that most people on this site are tired of seeing people ask for biased articles, just stick to what you do and only the minority will complain, because as we know you can’t make everyone happy.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          Very true.

      • starwars360

Yes we all understood but you need have better modder and banned whoever is trolls like stupid TruthTeller and he always bashed over and over.

      • WhataShame

I don’t think attacks are warranted, but I do wish everyone in the press would maybe wait an ENTIRE week… or how about until we’re at least a little further into the holiday season. Not just 4 days… and call it a week. Not an attack, just an opinion.

      • Rinslowe

I don’t think you have written a doom and gloom article….

But I will be honest and say your interpretation of the “facts” is mostly not quite right. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not like attacking you or anything of that nature. But just putting my honest opinion against what I’m reading here in this article…

Using positive software sales to make a point of hardware sales isn’t working out. Those sales look pretty good and does not include downloads either.
21,000 unit sales in Japan is also positive news overall, because it is many times that than the average Q1 and Q2 weekly sales, right?

But, I do “agree” in that SM3DW has not ultimately moved a great no’ of Wii U’s off the shelves in Japan. That much is clear. However, the information used to support that fact was in fact not supporting that fact, very clearly.

    • TheKingJoseph

and here goes the typical wiik ninty fan that can’t handle reality. go back to your delusional world

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Some just can’t stand bad news. Pity really.

        • Leo

I can’t stand bad negative thinking. You are a bunch of depressed people mumbling about doom and gloom “news”. I just gave my two cents.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

The fact that you brought it up, means you sound very upset. It’s Ashley’s job to call the news as it is. How does that make her or others depressed? Sounds to me it’s clearly the opposite. People like yourself take every article to heart , and expect everything to be positive.

If you can’t stand negative thinking, then you’ve come to the wrong place. The internet has both positive and negatives. Can’t just have one and expect the other to be non-existent. Gotta learn to deal with it. If you want nothing but positive news and thinking, then find a fansite, cause you’re not going to get that here. It’s news first, bad or good. My two cents. πŸ™‚

          • Leo

Oh yes, it has been a while that i am upset with this site. Especially the people who press the panic button every single day. At the beggining it was kinda cute and childish, but now its becoming very tired. I may have been harsh to Ashley, because she is one of the few here who actually makes an effort to remain neutral, but the WiiU Daily as a whole has been heading more for the negative side instead of finding a balance. I am not the only one who roll eyes reading those articles. And you are right, there are indeed other sites who are not jumping in this depressed bandwagon.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

As I said, you’re not going to get positive news every time. Besides, I don’t see articles like this that often. So I honestly don’t see your point of being harsh in the first place. That was childish on your part.

You seem like a reasonable person, so I won’t jump down your throat about this. Keep in mind, it’s Ashley’s and any other WiiUDaily contributor’s job to call it like it is. Plus, it wasn’t that bad of news that spells doom and gloom. I do think you exaggerated a bit there. I don’t see how that’s jumping on the depressed bandwagon. πŸ˜›

This site is for news, not for the crazy fans I prefer to call fanboys(not saying you’re one btw). In any case, it’s just news reporting, no reason to get uppity about it.

          • Leo

Yes quite a bit exaggerated, i agree that this discussion became a shitstorm, but its more like an expression of the tendency that this site seems to be headed. Lets hope that this site will find some balance instead of weekly articles of “Patcher predicts the end of Nintendo”, “EA doesn’t give a fuck”, “WiiU is underpowered according to developer X”. You know what i mean, i am just fed up with this crap.

          • capitalism1023

Like I said, POLICING EVERY DAMN ARTICLE! Get a life instead of arguing with everybody. Yeah they have their opinions as well and it’s not the same as yours. Get over it. Also, the site is called Wii U daily, not gaming daily, so this IS a Wii U fan site. I thought that was obvious but maybe it isn’t for you. Also, maybe you should go buy a Wii U before you get yourself so involved here. Just a thought.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Hello again, ScienceEthusiast, usama, and any other crazy account you may have, or perhaps you have silly friends who work in groups. You must have some agenda. It’s a shame that it’s one that the masses don’t care about. You must live a sad life.:)

Perhaps you should worry about our own life instead of others. You must really have no life to be thinking so highly of mine. Don’t be upset if you don’t like negative sides of opinions. You should welcome it. You are the silliest fan I have on any website. Sending me a fruit bowl would have sufficed. πŸ˜›

          • capitalism1023

Sorry to burst your Sony bubble but on the day the PS4 launched Super Mario 3D world was number 1 on Amazon in North America. Japan has always been a fickle market and if you actually read the article Ashley states that all mario titles have done so so in Japan for the first week. Mario has legs, you know the things you can’t even see past that belly of yours.

          • capitalism1023

You like it don’t ya Daniel……..

          • capitalism1023

I think you are the one with the agenda man, you have been commenting and arguing with people non stop for three days when you don’t even own a Wii U. And maybe you should find your own accusations man since you are the one with multiple accounts and I called you out on it. Now you’re accusing me of having multiple accounts because a lot of people disagree with you. How original. And don’t act like you like fruit you fat tard, you look like you eat Doritos and taco bell all day.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Only one here with an agenda is you. Especially since you follow me where ever I go. Anyone with common sense, can see that.

Also, just like you accused me of having another account? Mad much? If you don’t like the accusations, then perhaps you shouldn’t make them yourself. Also, I don’t mind the downvotes or if someone disagrees with me on something, and the majority of them hardly ever act as you do. They are at least kind enough to downvote and move on. What’s stopping you? Exactly, you just want a reason to cause a ruckus on a website.

Truth is, only you and a handful of people actually care what is mentioned between us, you just waste your time trying. Fact of the matter is, I’m not going anywhere anytime soon, so it’s only futile on your end. If anything, you just entertain me with each of your posts and I don’t even have to insult you to make a point. I’ll leave that for you to do. πŸ˜‰

Also, Doritos and tacos are awesome, I don’t see the problem there. πŸ˜›

          • capitalism1023

We know you love Dorito’s and Taco Bell, it shows bro. I find it hilarious though that every time I make a comment you say your’re done and you’re not going to respond back, but you do……every damn time. I must be hitting some kind of nerve on that rolley polley body of your’s. And not everybody has moved on when they disagree with you, check every damn article on this site and low and behold there’s good old Daniel arguing with a number of people telling them how wrong they are. And who needs to get a life if I own a Wii U and I come here to discuss my passion but you come here to argue when you don’t even own a Wii U? I’ve brought up that you don’t own a Wii U numerous times and you wont ever address it. I wonder why? Just as your annoying ass wont go away neither will I and btw how did trying to ban me work out for ya? Somebody must agree with me……

        • Rinslowe

The reason why I reply to you, is that in most situations you’re level headed about things…
But, this is not bad news at all, as mentioned in a previous post. The article is not very representative of the facts. And it uses sales stats to make a point of weak Mario sales by outlining unit sales.

The problem is, the software sales show that Mario is selling extremely well for the platform (especially considering the install base in Japan is only 1+ million) and that the 99,500+ total does not include download sales data. Not to mention it covers only 4 full days not 7.
The second problem with this portrayal of the information provided is in the fact that Wii U unit sales are still 10 times higher than the weekly low of 2K units of 4 weeks ago…

          It’s actually good news…

          • Daniel Gonzalez

You’re entitled to believe what you wish, Rinslowe. For me, this isn’t exactly the greatest news. Relax, I didn’t say it was a failure. πŸ˜›

          • Rinslowe

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still pretty relaxed lol… Just saying, it’s actually good news.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            To each their own. πŸ˜›

          • Rinslowe

Indeed. But would that also mean you believe those facts to not point to that conclusion, of positive news? And if not, why?

Mate, I’m without a shadow of a doubt, genuinely curious about that… (0% cynicism)

  • While I don’t think the sales would be drastically higher with a full week of sales for SM3DW (only 4 days or so on the market), Japan must still be going crazy over the new Vita model and the release of God Eater 2. Japan loves handhelds and Monster Hunter/God Eater games.

  • sharlo galmo

But the game is 3 or 4 days out, i think that nextweek the WiiU will sell more, and christmas is coming.

    • uptownsoul

What? the first week of sales of most any game is the biggest selling week of that game title. i agree that over time mario games tend to move a lot. but there will probably not be a bigger 1 week total than this. and as far as Christmas coming, so what?!?!? Christians in Japan are a minority, the two major religions in Japan are Shinto and Buddhism. thats like saying nobody will buy Mario 3D or a PS4 in Europe because it releases the day after Thanksgiving.

      • Mario

He’s right. Last time I checked, Japaneses don’t really celebrate Christmas. Do they?

  • Jon

Isn’t this one 1 day of sales for Mario 3D world?

  • Elias Ruelas

I wouldn’t worry about it. Once the Wii U has a large enough library of great games, hardware sales will likely begin to balance out with its competitors. However, at this point, I don’t see this balancing begin to happen until around summer time of next year.

  • Yousif Alromaithi

The Wii U is getting their just wait for Wii Fit U. It will skyrocket on japan.

  • It’s just Japan’s game taste, everything else sold miserably compared to Final Fantasy.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

Well, that’s a shame. Figured this being a Mario game, it’d sell fine in all regions. That’s a bit surprising.

    • Reason

Why they think it will be system seller? I can see how mario cart or smash bros or new zelda will be system seller but just 3d mario? I can’t imagine someone will buy wii u cuz of this game.

    • Rinslowe

It’s no 2 spot for software sales against a system with ten times the install base in Japan, lol. Nothing shameful about that.
*Hardware sales in Japan have been up many times the past average; for last 3, going on 4 weeks…

Surprising that not many more people are seeing it for what it is. Positive upward trend in Wii U sales…

Based on the information provided of last 4 days sales no’s, Mario is a success in Japan.
      (PS3: 10 million units – Wii U: 1.15 million, lifetime unit sales)

  • Lil J Moore

Japan sure love them some RPG’s. Which reminds me. We need more RPG’s on the WiiU. Monster Hunter, Tales of, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Mario and Luigi RPG.

    Bring on the RPG’s.

    • Ducked

Kingdom Hearts on Wii U would be a huge win!

      • Lil J Moore

That box art looks F-ing amazing

        • Ducked

I know right! It really fits in perfectly on the Wii U box

      • DarkLegacy
        • Ducked

          • DarkLegacy

Also if you look at the costume, you can see that it’s similar to Terra’s armour

          • Ducked

OH yeah….you just reminded me of the boss fight in the end of BBS when you have to fight Terranort with Terra’s armor. Hardest boss fight…..EVER! Well one of them..

          • DarkLegacy

Terranort is extremely hard. Takes a lot of time to level up so that you can beat him and complete Terra’s story

  • Think I’ll wait for official figures before agreeing with the opinions here. I find 3d mario not shifting any Wii U’s unlikely and these kind of stats (presumably extrapolated from small store samples as with vgchartz) can be off by an order of magnitude. I find the hostility to the Wii U in Japan strange. I don’t know if there’s a known reason why the Wii U’s failed so much more there than it did in the west.

  • Green

I think mario is a game that has a long life so the first week sales don’t matter much. I imagine by end of 2014 we’ll see this at least at 4 mill units sold because look at sunshine it did like 6mi on a 20mill install base

    • Al_G_Funguy

“the first week sales don’t matter much”
Especially when the data was only for the first 4 days of sales. Not even a full week.

  • Adam Holland

The good news is that Wii U sits at the top spot for home console sales.

I also agree with Laud that solid Mario titles tend to sell well over time. Reminds me of Avatar and Titanic in a strange way. Both of those films had decent openings, but the serious cash came in thanks to repeat viewings and word of mouth recommendations.

  • TheKingJoseph

b-b-bb-bb–b-b-but System seller? ahaaahahahahahaaahah RIP wii u

    • SamusPrime

You put in your standard “RIP” kudos to you. Shouldn’t you be in school now?

      • WhataShame

I long for the return of real gamers and the end of fanboy trolls…

  • Googs

The console sales might not have jumped, but it’s staying at the 20-30k mark, which is good. If it keeps this pace until the ‘big hitting’ titles arrive (Mario Kart 8, X, Smash Bros), the console will be good πŸ™‚

    • BIG Franky

dude…. just so you know, SM3DW is one of the ‘big hitting titles’ ….

      • Googs

I know, but what I mean is that if it can keep this pace until the other big hitters get released, the Wii U will recover πŸ™‚

  • Gameonfool

    Uh oh

  • Ducked

Hopefully Square Enix will show more support for Wii U next year

    • Reason

Last good thing SE did was DeusEx in my opinion. They like ea for me really.

      • Ducked

Deus Ex? That’s probably one of their weaker games. Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts is where it’s at!

  • kirbydonuts

Well its a good start though for Nintendo to release Super Mario 3D World, the Japanese numbers doesn’t mean anything because they haven’t released the sales numbers in US, and the game is getting released in the UK this week. However, Japanese people love their RPG’s πŸ™‚ and Bayonetta 2 and Monolith Soft X will sell, and Wii Fit U in Japan will also sell I can’t believe Final Fantasy sold poor πŸ™

  • Are the eShop virtual sales registered there????!

  • Simon Stevens

    I feel sad now πŸ™

  • Luciano

    Selling units again?
I’m sorry,I can’t hear you because the “MEOW” sound coming from my TV.

  • WhataShame

We won’t really know the true fate of the Wii U until after this holiday shopping season is over. And I would go even further and say not until at least the end of January. Holiday cash and gift cards need to be spent first.

Until then, please heed this warning regarding ridiculous XBONE and PS4 fanboy rants on this page:

    • Guest

ninty fanboys arent showing much class either so should practice what you preach πŸ˜‰

      • WhataShame

That goes for the offending Ninty fanboys as well, then. Play nice people.

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

GREAT SALE ….. but can someone say how to chance my nickname

  • Al_G_Funguy

FYI the “week” at Gematsu ends on 11/24
So you are looking at only 4 days of data (21th-24th) for Super Mario 3D World

  • Adrian

Wiiu is the top selling home console in japan. Very interesting. And they have lightning returns there!!??

  • Rinslowe

I’m not defending the Wii U in any fanboysih way here. But since when is going from 2K + sales a week in Japan consistently to 38K – 15K – 21K a bad thing?
I’m not sure how finishing in @ no’ 2 spot for the week in Japan software sales is strictly a bad thing either, isn’t that pretty good? lol.
Overall, the Wii U does seem to be having a tough time on home turf. That is for sure. But this is a downer of an article on what is actually pretty good news for Wii U and Mario…

I think both these sites provide a more balanced perspective in how they make the point of; “Mario; Not selling tons of Wii U systems in Japan”

  • Al_G_Funguy

“doesn’t help move Wii U units”

I thought the number of Wii U units sold increased?

How do you know it didn’t help “move Wii U units”?

  • Al_G_Funguy

“Japan hasn’t cared for it too much”

    They don’t “care for it”?

But it’s in the top 2.

    • Dave May

actually its the number 1 home console the other 2 systems are portables but this nazi propaganda web site will never mention that just more doom and gloom

  • capitalism1023

The Wii U is the top selling home console in Japan and Super Mario 3D World is the number two selling game. How is this bad news again? And the sales data for the game only accounts for 4 days and the data doesn’t include eshop sales as well.

  • Mitch Hall

3D World is ok so far. It’s a good game, but I think they played it too safe, and it doesn’t really have the “wow” factor that the Galaxy games had. That’s my opinion, at least.

    • Mario

      • Mitch Hall

Yes… and I also, y’know, OWN the game.

        • Mario

  • Dylan Groot

Well received in Europe? It isnt even out yet!

  • Mario

What!? How could this be!? First Sonic! Now me!?

  • Dave May

whats with this web site? its like its made by sony and microsoft. super mario is the second best selling game and the author has to drag it through the mud, this is supposed to be a nintendo fan site. heres what the article really says

” wii u is the third best selling system in japan, mario is number 2 for overall software sales”

this web site is garbage and spreads nothing but lies and nonsense

    sent from wiiu gamepad

    • Rinslowe

While I don’t agree overall about Wii U Daily… It’s usually a pretty good spot for Wii U only news. And with the exception of a very small no’ of resident trolls, surprisingly free of asinine haters in the comment section as well. Thankfully.

But, this article is not so well written. (Sorry Ashley) It’s totally out of sync with the figures actually…

(Let me note that Ashley is more right than wrong in 99% of cases, IMO. But this article is mostly not quite right…)

    • Graeme Lynch

Actually Dave the article clearly states the numbers refer to the sales of the console that week and previous.
Just because you don’t like what it is suggesting doesn’t mean you have to throw a fit.

      Sent from a PC.

    • NyallJodhan

Indeed. Positively looking at those numbers could have been written as:
SM3DW debuts at #2 with just under 100,000 sales, helping Wii U sales rise by 32% over last week.

    • Nintenjoe82

and they publish back-to-back nonsensical articles trying to say the exact same thing which is effectively ignoring the fact that Wii U is actually gaining a little momentum around the time that everyone said it would be blown to pieces by ‘next-gen’.

  • Ony

  • Krzysztof

Nevertheless, it’s still the best selling home console in Japan for 4 weeks in a row now.

  • MujuraNoKamen

Mario is at number 2, you make it seem like a bad thing! It was only beaten by Final Fantasy but that’s practically a god in Japan. I take your point about how small the rise in Wii U sales were but hey an increase is an increase, this only counts for 4 days of sales too and Wii U was the best selling home console and 3rd best selling overall(missing out on the number 2 spot by 42 units)
I’m not thrilled with the charts but I’m not depressed either.

  • Dez

FFS, I hate #1 on that list. Really another crappy Square game forcing more of that bitch Lightning on everyone. Though it is kind of sad that Mario isn’t moving much units, I think there are still a lot of hold outs waiting for Mario Kart 8 and Smash next year though I think Donkey Kong would have helped were it released this year. Still not the best news but Nintendo dominates the top 5 software sales overall.

  • vatto

Actually, it’s the highest selling week in a very long time for the Wii U in japan. It was frozen in 2k per week for a very long time and now it’s the best selling home console in Japan, selling twice as much. How is that bad?

  • Gabe Hoffman

It frustrates me how these charts don’t even take into account digital sales. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people went digital considering the relatively small file size

  • How many FF XIII games do they fucking need? Holy shit…

    • DarkLegacy

I heard LR is going to be the last FFXIII game that we get next year on February 14th 2014

      • Good

        • DarkLegacy

Yeah it is good that it’s the last one. I’m going to buy Final Fantasy XV rather than buying LR

  • Shagrath1983

How about this —-> 3D World shows up at number 2 on Japans top selling games, even as Console games are being pushed around by the dominant handheld market in the region?

  • BGhp

    Try harder Nintendo!

  • 2Макс2

When do we get the FINAL Final Fantasy?) it’s like those never-ending soap operas.

  • e_rocket

    sad news…

  • David John Gifford

I didnt think square enix had anything do with cod games though

  • Martijn Plasmans

If it’s not selling that well or selling any consoles, Nintendo needs to push harder. Which is a good thing for consumers.

  • elton john

    • Rinslowe

      Reginald, you are legend.

  • Nigga

Of course no one in Japan is buying a fucking Wii U. Of course the Vita outsold the Wii U. Are you shitting me, WiiUDaily?

Japan is not big on consoles. They have a COMMUTER’S LIFESTYLE in general. Things like the 3DS and Vita are a godsend because people in Japan are ON THE GO. The Wii U is NOT on the go. common sense niggas

  • StigtriX

I think Mario Kart 8 will move more units, as the graphics and art style both look really great. It is also a game that I would dare say appeals to a lot more people. Please, Nintendo! Make a new and sleeker Wii U and release a totally new IP! It’s about time to think new and not focus on safe titles all the time.

  • Andy

    I bought a Wii U for this game πŸ™‚

  • fireheartis1

Wait I personally do not see what’s wrong with these numbers. Mario 3D World was the #2 selling game in Japan, and the Wii U was the #3 selling console. This means that Mario helped sell some console but not as much, bu the Wii U is still picking up pace in it’s sells. If it is the 3rd best selling console it is starting to make a profit for Nintendo. Why all this oh poor Wii U and Nintendo gloom article stuff. If Nintendo is making a profit in business that’s all that matters here.

  • n64king

I can’t say I’m surprised. Who honestly expected it to move the system? The console is near being flooded with Mario games. It’s their main dude I understand, but other Nintendo consoles saw variety way earlier. I want 3D World, but not when 2/4 of my WiiU games are already NSMBU + Luigi U, more Mario? Then soon comes Mario Kart. More Mario. And while Smash Bros is not exclusive Mario, Mario is shown an awful lot. Perhaps Mario overkill is hurting them slightly? However anyone saying consoles aren’t moving now doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Yes it’s slower, but you can’t say it’s dead or not moving. I also believe Nintendo has made their stance clear and shouldn’t be compared to the PS4/XB1 too closely, as a Big 3 contender yes, but I can’t understand why I can come here and still see people complaining about no PS/XB cross overs. Not gonna happen. They may just end up sliding into a niche market. Or perhaps Nintendo is ahead of their time by accident, as some compare it to the Dreamcast which was ahead of it’s time. The WiiU is a sleeping giant as someone said, it’s easily the favorite when my friends visit me and we play from all of the Big 3 systems. You at least have to give it to Nintendo that they attempted to do something different, XB & PS did the same thing again. So much for the future of gaming, a spy cam and a controller with a touchpad on it. Thanks a lot. Doublescreen + gamepad? More than the other guys came up with
