May 31st, 2013

Earlier today Nintendo hosted a Japanese-only Nintendo Direct aimed at addressing some of the release dates and future products for the region. Among the announcements was a release date of September 14 for Monster Hunter 4 and the above trailer for Super Luigi U, which is entirely new. The downloadable title will be 1.5GB and will be available on the following dates for various regions:

  • June 19 – Japan
  • June 20 – US
  • June 20 – UK

The retail version that so many of you are after for that nifty green box will be available on the following dates:

  • July 13 – Japan
  • July 26 – UK
  • August 25 – US

As you can see, the US region has a considerable wait period for anyone wanting that green box. The game features 82 brand new levels and the new playable character Nabbit for multiplayer, who cannot be harmed by enemies instead of being able to use power ups. If you’ll be purchasing the game, let us know in the comments what you think of the trailer and whether you plan on getting the downloadable version or holding out for a boxed copy.

can’t wait, this looks pretty awesome πŸ™‚

getting boxed version, sure it is a bit more than a month apart but I’ll gladly wait πŸ™‚

  • Robyn Hermann

Pre ordered mine already from Amazon, my son wants for his birthday in August.

  • D.M.T

I’m getting the retail version on July 26 (Europe) πŸ˜€

This is off topic but I think it’s funny how we haven’t heard of Michael Pachter since the Xbox One reveal. Didn’t he say Xbox One will destroy Wii U in sales? LOL!!!

    • Nintenjoe82

He’ll be back….. beating the drum for one of Ouya/Steambox/iPad

      • Steambox could be very interesting… I am making my own steambox in a way by adding a modest video card in the $300 price range to my HTPC. It has a higher level quad core APU w/8GB ram already so I will load my steam account on there. I already use it for my media streaming and blu-ray player so I may as well use it for gaming since the XBOX One looks like crap to me and if I am to change platform I am not going PS4. I will keep my 360 until I play out the games I have but doubt I will buy any future games for it. I will have my Wii U and PC for the games I want to play on my TV.

    • MTGSWE

I’m so gonna buy this retail too πŸ˜€

    • Mr. Hobo

When does he usually make his sales predictions? I sure want to hear what he says about the Wii U this month.

      • Jeffery02

And this is why he’s still around. We listen to what he says, even though we don’t agree with it. Some people complain about why we hear about him and the reason is because we all want to criticize him. He gets views, money, and fame not because he gives good advice, but because he gives backwards advice that contradicts itself at times that we like to point and laugh at. If he realizes this, then isn’t he actually the one laughing at us?

        • crocodileman94

I read his predictions because I find them funny.

        • CapnCrumbles436

That’s actually part of a larger trend in American culture. People tend to lend their eyes and ears to those they vehemetly disagree with. They are drawn to the outrageous and ridiculous. This only raises their confidence and emboldens them allowing them to spread their foolishness. I don’t care what Pachter has to say. If something seems outrageous rediculous and foolish, best we turn away from it. If enough people do that in a free capitalist society the offender disappears into ambiguity.

      • Rey Hardy

Patcher will be back after Nintendo’s E3 Direct. He will say 3D Mario, Mario Kart U, Windwaker Reborn, Smash Bros and of course his personal favorite Bayonetta 2 look AMAZING and he cant wait to play it. Then he will go on to say Wii U sales are going to skyrocket with these blockbusters, I may have been abit harsh on Nintendo before but everyone knows I have been wrong a few times before. (EVERYTIME)

        • crocodileman94

You’re kidding… right? I can’t imagine that guy saying such things about Nintendo.

          • Andreas Sunde

Well, he did say he’d buy a WiiU to play Bayonetta 2, so what’s to stop him from the rest?

    • Alex

Looks like Michael Pachter has to wear a bag over his head for saying that.

      • Micheal who??? Oh you mean that person who like to bitch on the internet just to get attention and page clicks. Yeah he is a troll and I gave up listening or responding to trolls. I find if you ignore them it pisses them off more and they will go where they can get the attention that their mommy or daddy did not give them when they were younger

        • MTGSWE

Exactly. Ignoring them is the best way to go. That’s at least what I do.

    • Darkstalkers1990

The Xbox One hasn’t even been released yet. LOL!!! Why are so many gamers fixated on one system? Isn’t gaming about having fun?

      • D.M.T

Gaming is about fun yes but Xbox One is not a gaming console, it is a multimedia system.

        • Darkstalkers1990

That`s a lie! Yes, it`s a multimedia system but it`s definitely a gaming machine. No? Look at the specs. Also, last time I checked, it`s going to be getting all AAA title games and 15 exclusives, whether or not those are kinect games, will have to wait until E3. What is your definition of multimedia? Technically, the Wii U is a multimedia system. Does more than just play games, right? People need to wait to regard judgement until E3, unless you’re psychic.

          • D.M.T

Yes it’s a console but Microsoft is no longer focused on games. It became pretty obvious after their Xbox One reveal. They want a system that “can do everything”, an all-in-one console which is why they named it Xbox One. The focus is no longer on games. And yeah it seems like Xbox One will have strong 3rd party support but I don’t know if 3rd party Devs will keep supporting it after the first year. I don’t like being quick to judge but they made it clear with the Xbox One reveal. Even if the Xbox One is about games I still won’t buy it because the console is anti-consumer in my opinion, I don’t want to be forced to be online once every 24 hours, I don’t want Kinect, I don’t want game installations etc.

          • Sorry I have to agree with DMT here. Based on their initial presentation they were clearly focused on taking over the TV multimedia experience first with the ability to play games second.

Also why do you instantly go to specs to justify that it is a gaming machine? Games and how you play those games make it a gaming machine. There is nothing wrong with a modern gaming console having extra services for internet and multimedia but they should be optional. It is clear that Microsoft wants to force the Kinect and it’s tracking, monitoring, and recording capabilities on us. The internet connectivity should be optional and able to be disconnected for any length by the user without inhibiting the ability to play those games. People (not saying you) complain over and over how NIntendo ties their downloadable games/content to the console but Microsoft does this a step further by making you install the game you purchased on disc to the console and activating it with DRM tied to that console.

I think Microsoft is trying to enter a market already dominated by SmartTVs and devices such as bluray players and set top boxes. Trying to take over those services claiming to improve on them. Maybe it will be an improvement but if they think that people are going to drop an estimated $500+ on such a device that happens to play games they are nuts. If you want to sell a $500 console then you focus on the games and how they are played and throw in a BTW (By the Way) it can do all this other stuff too. And NEVER NEVER make it mandatory to use a camera or microphone type device to use the console for the people that do not want it.

          • Darkstalkers1990

You made some good points, though some were mere speculation. I can see as a gamer how this could hinder your playing experience dealing with kinect being “always online” or the 24hr update check. However, I can see this making gaming more immersive and seamless. As for the reason I brought up specs was to point out that they wouldn’t have implemented competitive hardware, if not for gaming. I just hate when people completely dismiss something, this case being the Xbox One, without having everything on the table; because, it`s likely to change. In any case, the Wii U is my main gaming machine. I mainly use my Xbox for only online use and that`s what I intend to use for the Xbox One. I guess will just have to agree to disagree.

          • MasterPpv

I agree with everything you just said, except one bit: they didn’t focus on games second – they made it dead last on their list of priorities. There was almost zero actual gameplay footage in the entire presentation, eschewed in favor of rendered or live-action cinematic trailers and big talk. Also, they brought EA out on stage with them. Really? EA?! One would think that if marketing anything towards a core gaming audience, you might want to avoid inviting what is likely the single most hated company in gaming to share the stage with you.

          • Andreas Sunde

Their target demographic doesn’t care about all the shit EA does, they just want the latest FIFA and Madden.

    • tronic307

WE think the Xbone is dumb, but non-gamers outnumber gamers. Non-gamers may just go gaga over that behemoth Tivo wannabe.

      • D.M.T

I agree that non-gamers outnumber gamers but here’s the thing: non-gamers will not buy the Xbox One because it will be too expensive for them and if they do buy a Xbox One, they won’t buy many games.

    • Madmagican

Actually, he talked to Sessler about the Xbone reveal (he thought it was good)

    • Michael Pachter is more stupid than myself

  • Nintedward

hmmmm. Physical or Digital ? comes out close to Pikmin 3 physically so I might just get the DLC so I can get it out of the way before Pikmin 3 arrives.

My body is so ready for Pikmin 3 , i just keep watching the latest gameplay footage of it on my TV , watches it about 10 times like I did with the X footage , lol.

    • DemonRoach

Digital is a rip off. the 30 dollar game will be collectible and you will always be able to sell it for 25+ bucks minimum, whereas the DLC becomes worthless and tied to the console as soon as you buy it. 10 dollars is not a worthwhile discount. I have NSMBU, and would love luigi as a heap DLC, but the price is too similar to the retail package.

      • I agree with this. Until Nintendo fixes it so that purchases are tied to your network ID instead of the actual console, I’d be wary about purchasing “collectible” DLC like this.

Regardless of whether you can call Nintendo to restore you games, you shouldn’t have to do so. There are plenty of cases of people being denied this request both on the Wii U and the 3DS.

        • juancamiloarq

Is Nintendo really gonna fix that, Ash? They should.

        • Cerus98

I’ve never heard of anyone being unable to get their games back after a hardware failure. Where’s your source?

          • DereX

Playstation 3 goes by ID… When your ps3 gets messed up, you can just redownload all of your titles which are attached to your psn ID and not your system like Nintendo does (usually lost forever)…. It would be nice if It already knows that you paid for them.

          • Cerus98

Thanks for that tidbit of information that we all knew already Captain Obvious. If thats too complicated for you to comprehend then just read this part….no shit sherlock.

This has nothing to do with my post as no one is claiming anything to the contrary. Perhaps a Sony fanboy shouldn’t be using a Nintendo IP as his profile picture.

          • Guest

“I’ve never heard of anyone being able to get their games back after a hardware failure. Where’s your source?”

That is YOUR post and her source is the Ps3….

Nintendo will not give your games back unless you send your console. It would be nice if it were tied to your ID like the ps3 is what they are saying…. (its obviously do-able bc the ps3 does it)

          • Cerus98

God you really are an idiot. First off – this is about the Wii U not the PS3. We all know its tied to accounts and Wii U is to console. She stated there have been cases of people being unable to get their games back by calling Nintendo for a NINTENDO console. NOT PS3. She gives no source. PS3 making it easier is NOT a source for confirming Nintendo doesn’t always restore games after a hardware replacement. Learn to fucking read dumbass.

          • DereX

Calm down skippy…. I misread what you said…. Nintendo would probably need verification like sending in the console or something to recover games….. It would definately be easier if they tied it to your ID and eliminated that hassel altogether… I think the ‘possibilty’ to recover games is irrelevant when it becomes that difficult.

          • Cerus98

Not to start a big debate but I kind of have to agree with the comments on the second story about the guy who supposedly got a dud console. His mistake was being such a big Nintendo fan but not knowing N downloads were console locked. Instead of calling them first he returned a console with that much money on it. Is it a more complicated system than Sony? Definitely, but someone that has bought that much content should know that their downloads don’t work like Sony.

The other is just a Q&A which unfortunately sucks but I have to agree with under their current system of restoration. They have no way of knowing if you actually lost or had your 3DS stolen or if you just gave it to a friend and are trying to get double the games for free. They have to cover ther own asses until they work out a new system for ID locking content.

          • Well I guess the only difference is the two situations I know of both called NIntendo when their system failed before returning it to the store. I guess having that record of a problem and Nintendo themselves recommending it be returned because it was new is why they got their stuff back. My brother had a game stuck in the drive too and that was replaced by Nintendo.

Anyway I agree needs to have a better way to control their digital content like if it is transferred to another system it gets deactivated on the other system.

        • Rey Hardy

          Well Im getting it digitally.

        • I agree that NIntendo needs to loosen the console ties to the game downloads but I have heard that while it is a pain in the ass to have to call Nintendo verify who you are and that you actually had to replace the console so that the ID and downloads could be transferred I have always heard that people got their content back.

A better verification process is needed and a method of deactivating the games on the old console just in case the person calling is trying to put them on more than one console or some other reason. Of course a method to have your downloads on more than one console you actually own would be welcome as well.

      • Fred

Not me, I’m the kind of guy that will keep games forever if I like them. I made the mistake of selling 3 Original Gameboy Games and then I regretted it for years I won’t do it again. Since I don’t have to worry about selling it back I’ll save $10 and buy digitally.

      • Jeffery02

I realize that it may not be the best idea financially, but I will probably buy the DLC for the ease of not having to put in another disc (2 games 1 disc) plus having it earlier and then buying the retail one for collection purposes. I may not even open the physical copy if I do that though, so that’s great for the collector in me. πŸ˜›

      • jay

Isn’t this DLC the biggest DLC ever made? Isn’t it the same size as the game itself?
Otherwise it wouldn’t be sold as a separate package?

        or am I wrong here?

        • DemonRoach

          Yes, you are wrong….

          • jay

If it’s such a small game why is it being sold as a seperate package also?

Name the last time DLC like a character of mission was so large it was also packed as a separate title?

    • Shaise Mughal

I’m sorted because I’m in the UK and both Luigi physical and Pikmin 3 comes out July 26th, a day after my birthday

  • Vaughn Chung

Are these completely new levels or just modified versions of the original game? Just trying to figure it out before I can justify paying 20 dollars for this DLC.

    • Pretty sure they’re modified to adjust for Luigi’s higher jump. Not sure how much that changes them. You can see some of the changes in the trailer above, they’re pretty drastic.

      • Jon

I thought I remember them saying something like 80 or so new levels/redesigned levels. There is stuff they show that I don’t recognize at all from the original and I completed it fully so that assures me even more πŸ™‚

        • Fred

I Think Jon is right. I think they said the maps are the same, but the levels are new

          • thedeciderU

yes, that’s what iwata said. maps remain the same, but all levels are new/redesigned. plus they are designed with a 100 second time limit/challenge in mind.

          • Fred

I don’t know how you can tell me that’s NOT worth $20/$30

      • Shaise Mughal

pretty sure they’re NOT modified, thats why they said 80 NEW levels

        • DereX

Of course they are modified…. If you watch the video you will notice that all of the level “props” are reused and recycled from the previous games… It probably takes them like 10 min to make a mario map in their editor….

  • crocodileman94

I’ll get the retail version. Game & Wario, and Dream Team will keep me busy till July 26.

  • Mickey Mouse

Some PS4/360 fanboys mocked Nintendo for bringing out dlc as a packaged version, but I can understand why they took that decision. And judging by people’s comments it seems to be the right decision.

    • Fred

Not only that, but think about how many they’ll sale this Christmas. mom buys son a Wii U and they see NSMBU for $60 and Luigi for $30 she asks and learns that both games have the same number of levels so without any quesitons she buys Luigi

  • Wait, what? Monster Hunter 4 release date?

    • September 14 for Japan. There’s no release date for the West yet.

      • Nintendofreak

does somebody in japan wanna trade places for awhile?

      • Frank

there better be, that’s been a smash hit in the World and Capcom would be fools not to worldwide it.

  • DennisJKA

Again: It’ll be released on June 20th in EUROPE, not only in UK! Europe doesn’t exist of UK only!

    • UK is used to refer to Europe, similarly to US being used to refer to Canada. It’s not correct, but that’s how it goes.

      • Relick

But most Canadians understand that when it says US it also means Canada. On the other hand the UK has had earlier releases than the rest of Europe (obviously due to localisation) so it only makes sense that Europe should be stated – not UK.

        • DennisJKA

        • ICHI

Yeah it depends on the game, most of the time that is correct but not always. Like you have mentioned localisations can get in the way and I have no problem with it saying UK as that’s the information I’m after, but Nintendo refer to it as a EU release then that’s how it should be reported if they refer to it as UK then that’s different, sorry Ash

      • Baum γ€Œγƒ„γƒͺー」

no that’s just plain stupid. I’m sorry Ashley, but you people in the US schould stop to see only the UK and your own country.

      • Nintedward

Sorry Ash , UK is not used to refer to Europe πŸ™‚ .

The United Kingdom is England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland. AKA Great Britain

The UK is part of Europe , even though its not part of the European Mainland…

        • DereX

Is there any way you guys could be a little less nerdy?

          • Andreas Sunde

          • Nintedward

Just because someone has a basic academic understanding doesn’t make them a nerd… lol.

            I’m kind of a nerd/normal hybrid…

  • Erik De Los Reyes

This looks Awsome, I too have completed NSMBU 100% and noticed new areas in the trailer. I’ll be getting the DLC version as soon as its released.

  • Fred

I’m saving $10 and buying digitally!

  • This is neat and all, and I definitely will support it by buying it, but I can’t help but think Nintendo is focusing way too much on simply putting luigi in a game and adding a harsher time limit.

    I mean, it’s cool – I guess?

    • Shaise Mughal

well what do you expect from the year of luigi

  • Justin Carlson

Does the 100 second time limit (vs the 300 second one) mean the levels are shorter? Or that you just need to run like mad?

I’m guessing a little of both.

    • Laud

      Run like mad.

      • Jeffery02

Like Sonic, but better. πŸ˜› If not, then better than modern Sonic at least.

        • Sonic the Hedgehog

Ahem…. what did you just say?

          • Jeffery02

Sorry man, but Sega has all but ruined you in this “modern” era. I blame them though, not you. πŸ˜›

          • Andreas Sunde

Now I want this game on PC, to get a mod that replaces Luigi with Sonic.

  • Cerus98

Decisions decisions. Waiting a month to get the shiny green box or get it a month sooner. Might have to get both. πŸ˜€

    • Anthony K Aurelia

I think that is what their counting on from us American consumers…and Canadian, lol.

  • Guest

Ok if nabbit takes no damage nintendo should of made a new power up that makes luigi take no damage but sense it would be a really amazing power up have you get it one in a while.

    • ICHI

      Errrrrrr Stars?

  • DereX

This dlc should be like $5 at most…… Usually DLC (PSN) gives you levels and playable characters for like $1.99….

    • Cameron

Difference here is that they’re giving you an entire second game built on top of the first one. Not 10 playable levels and/or 1 new playable character.

      • DemonRoach

just reorganized levels, (and a lot shorter).

        • Th3PANO

a lot? in nsmbu the time runs faster then seconds. in the dlc it is actual seconds so it is actually more time in nsmbu. more like 120-200 nsmbu seconds.

          • crocodileman94

            I think it’s around 160-180 nsmbu seconds.

    • Cerus98

Those cheap DLCs aren’t a complete new game with multiple new characters to go along with it.

  • Adecentboy777

Another Mario Copy – give me something else please and not this …. annoying game πŸ™‚

    • Frank

Nice Sarcasm, shows you know how to joke.

    • ICHI

why are people downvoting this?!! It’s a play on the most typed Miiverse posts for describing your mood or the level in 2 words!!!!! If the people downvoting had ever actually played NSMB U they would know that.

      Genius Sir, carry on πŸ™‚

      • Adecentboy777

Ok, I will πŸ™‚ I just need more, but till more games come I will play some PS3 Exclisives and then PS4 exclusives and then MARIO and ZELDA finally arrive πŸ™‚

  • Jack5221

Even though I could get the DLC 2 months sooner and 10 bucks cheaper, Im buying the retail version. The box art is just pure awesome and highly collectible – a MUST have!!! πŸ™‚

  • Nicolas Dorion

new super luigi u = pussy version of new super mario bros u… jump higher, float in the air, invincible character…

    • Cerus98

The new character is for little kids who aren’t able to play it with a regular character. It’s a multiplayer character only FYI.

    • jay

I hear most people complain it’s too hard 0.0

  • DemonRoach

Levels are smaller, you only get 100 seconds. What a joke and a scam.

    • A SNES Day Off

How is this title a scam? It’s cheaper than NSMB-U, features all new levels and playable characters.

      • H8ersBH8n

        It’s a scam because it’s too hard for him….

        • LOL Makes me think of all these people that call games of this type “Kiddie Games” but sometimes these games are amongst the most challenging type of games out there.

          • ICHI

Bet they’ve never finished Mega Man 2 without the ability to save the game mid level. Lets all go play Jet Set Willy Online!

    • jay

I always find it funny when “hardcore” gamers complain about games being too hard.

100 seconds?? lol WELCOME TO THE NES ERA KIDD!

      • Silent

True, ”hardcore” people are having trouble with Super Mario Advance 4 nowadays.

        • jay

They wouldn’t of survived my childhood.

They should be forced to play Ghost N Goblins, Battletoads or Ninja Turtles on the NES until they cry.

    • Cerus98

They aren’t smaller. Just harder. Its also DLC content. How many other games have DLC that are essentially a full, new game? None.

  • Destructonator101

Its a DLC pack isnt it. A huge DLC pack.

    It is DLC isnt it!?

    • Yes and no.. It is DLC in the sense it is kind of an add on for SMB U, but is also being released as a full game that runs separately on it’s own

  • Destructonator101

    Nabbit Kart

    • Andreas Sunde

At least he has to be in the next Mario Kart.

  • LoZ4life98

This looks pretty good, but I think I will wait for the reviews on this one before I buy the actual game. xp

  • jay

have a feeling this game is gonna be huge!!

  • Bob Singh

can you play the downloadable version without having NSMBU?

    • Alex Damman

      i don’t think so. sorry. πŸ™

      • Bob Singh

Thanks guys. If you’ve played the first one, do you think it’s worth the $30

        • Cerus98

For an entirely new, full game experience at half the price or less? Yes.

          • Bob Singh

Thanks man I’ll look forward to this. πŸ™‚

    • Cerus98

No. That’s what the retail disc is for.

  • Baconfat23

For people with more knowledge on space, If I download the Downloadable Title is it likely I’ll end up with no space on my Wii U in the future? This is what’s currently deciding which one I’ll buy.

    • I am not sure what you mean but the 8GB model has very little available for download storage so seeing that this is a 1.5GB download it will take a good chunk out of the available space.

I have the 32GB model and I have quite a bit downloaded already and still have 16GB free.. The NES and SNES Virtual Console titles are rather small and only about 20 -50MB each but the N64 and Gamecube (if they come) will be considerably larger.

Thankfully you can easily add a USB hard drive for additional storage.

Why has no one mentioned MH4 here yet? I’m pretty sure if that dropped to the western market it would be huge.

      We’ve had MH3U for two months. Don’t think it’s a bit early?
