Nintendo decided to close out their E3 2014 presentation with a very interesting third-person shooter game that we didn’t quite see coming. It’s titled “Splatoon,” and it features some of the most fresh and innovative gameplay mechanics we’ve seen in a long time. The game pits a group of 8 squids (4 vs 4) against each other who look to complete their goal (whether it’s reaching an objective or being the last squid standing) using nothing but their ink. Yes, ink.

The base game mechanic has to do with movement and where (and where not) your squids can go. You can only travel where your ink is, and running into an enemy’s ink (which would naturally be a different color than yours) can slow you down and stave you off. You can also use your own ink to hide and setup traps for unsuspecting enemy players. Catch an enemy squid red-handed? Douse him with your ink and make him suffer.

Splatoon features a very vibrant color palette and nicely designed levels, and an art style that you’ve come to expect from a Nintendo game by now. This new IP is unproven, but it’s no less exciting and we can’t wait to see how it turns out once it launches at some point in 2015.

  • Super Buu

    War. War has changed.

  • Ducked

Okay I have a pro and con for every game revealed today. Why did they make the animation look like a game for six year olds? Besides that the concept looks sweet.

    • koopapoopas

Maybe, to stick out from all the other gray-colored edgy games?

Also maybe to capture your imagination rather than trying to be a simulator?

      • Ducked

Should have been more descriptive. I love the animation of the game, but not for the characters. Your playing as these little kids makes it feel like a kiddie game.

        • C4

They probably thought it fits the vibrant and colorful look which is necessary to make the ink look good and also blend the animations into the squids

    • Sdudyoy

My biggest problem with this game is that to me it seems more like a mini game rather than a full game.

      • Jon

That”s probably what this game is. there is going to be various maps and various gamemodes and objects. Kind of like what counter strike and team fortress are.

    • Aldo

      Animation is something, design another.

  • luis
    • luis

new starfox being played by mr myamoto

  • MerryBlind .

aaaaannnd Mario Sunshine’s goo is back!

    • Diaz

Poor Mario is probably going to have to clean up after them

  • Petri

This is a long waited refreshment to countless of shooters out there.

  • burtyb 73

What a great concept and fabulous looking design

  • MujuraNoKamen

All set for a Starfox reveal soon. I cant be the only one who got the hint from all the ‘what about starfox’ in the show. – And more importantly that was blatantly an Arwing on Miyamotos screen.
On their facebook page I just saw a post saying “ready for Miyamoto to reveal 3 new games at E3” and on one of the screens the background looked a lot like the game he was playing.

    • MujuraNoKamen

Too late he just showed off a demo.

    • Arthur Jarret

There was a ‘what about Mother 4’ in the show too… new earthbound revealed soon?

      • MujuraNoKamen

        I wish. We’ll wait and see πŸ™‚

  • MetroidZero

Better than Call of Duty: Ghosts

    • D-Man

      What isn’t? Lol.

  • brandon

looks neat and unique to me!

  • Rinslowe

Apart from Zelda, this game took the cake for me. So damn full of colour and possibilities. And I mean come on. A Nintendo centric shooter just looks great. This is a day one for me. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long…

  • mojack411

This has to be the most unique shooter I have seen in a VERY long time. The amount of strategy and fun that’s possible from this is endless. It’s like a breath of fresh air amongst all the nitty gritty shooters out there right now. Now the question is can Nintendo nail the mechanics behind it. If aiming is a pain or something of the like the game won’t be too much fun. Those motion controls better be tight or offer an analog option.

    • Roadkill409

I assume this will be a great game to play with my family. If it is fun, we will have hours of play with this

      • mojack411

Another thing I just realized for this game to be good is that Nintendo really needs to nail the online. This game, more than any other on Wii U, will rely on it’s online capabilities the most. If it’s laggy then it will be a very bad sign.

That said, nothing beats good ol’ couch competition. This game will definitely be an absolute blast in a large household.

        • Roadkill409

Online is essential. I know I would have played Metriod Blast online if they had it.

        • Mario Kart 8’s online mode is an example of Nintendo hitting the nail on online. Zero lag and hardly any issues

          • mojack411

Agreed, although it still has it’s fair amount of connectivity issues when joining games. Once you’re actually playing, though, it’s absolutely seamless. Here’s hoping the iron out those minor flaws in Splatoon.

          • Jon

agreed, I don’t get any lag… except when my internet starts crapping out to others using it πŸ˜›

        • ZeldaFan83

I have faith they will do good, Mario Kart 8’s online is great and isn’t laggy at all.

  • Dem graphics!! Dat gameplay!! MY WALLET IS DYING HERE!!

  • A SNES Day Off

Surprised they didn’t feature Mii’s in this game, it seems perfect for them.

    • Sdudyoy

I’m glad they didn’t though, it would take away from some of the unique charm.

    • C4

      Or Mario lol

  • Sdudyoy

This game looks fun, but I’m still not a big fan of shooters of any kind really, but who knows this could change my mind.

  • Phoenix Maybe

They really need to add some aiming crosshair or something. Aiming looks kind of hard in this game. Other than that this game looks great!

  • Arthur Jarret

I really can’t wait for this one – this looks like a brilliant online time-sink for the whole family. I just hope there’s online chat between team-mates.

    • Will the3rd

  • MetroidZero

The background visuals with the buildings remind me of Mirror’s Edge.

  • D-Man

IMO, this game is better than Call of Duty (like that’s an accomplishment, lol). But seriously, this game looks colorful, fun, and will be online (excellent). The only bad thing is it launches in 2015. That’s too long of a wait, and doesn’t it seem like ALL the games announced are 2015. Nintendo, we need games now. We must end this drought! Mario Kart 8 was a great way to start the flow of games, but we need to continue this!

  • Will the3rd

I’m super hyped with this game!!!! And i mean, im a super hater of MK8, so you can imagine how much this means!!! Nintendo dropped the bomb!

    • It just means you have a taste for one game, and not another. Not really any sort of reliable indication of how good this game Splatoon is–it’s just a matter of your personal taste.

  • …Err what Did I just watch xD I think we finally have a game worthwhile for me and my friends to couch surf!? err shoot!? on Wii U. hehe looks rather funny.

  • Marioman21

This looks like a great new ip for Nintendo.

  • Logan Wayman

If there’s a campaign mode, than I wanna see the main character in the new Smash.

  • TheGamerGeek128

This looks kinda cool. Maybe not something I’d spend 60 bucks on, but it seems interesting enough, especially if they take it online.

  • Michael Hancock

Who is this developed by? Nintendo?

    • Shootdatrupee!…

Yeah. Apparently it’s the new IP…
      Is it?

  • 2Макс2

somehow reminds me of Team Fortress game (maybe because of cartoon-like graphics), which I do like))

  • MrPablox

Doesn’t this type of world remember Blob? Remember that game from the Wii?

  • Not going to bash it, but now exactly what I was hoping for in terms of a new IP.
