A few months ago we told you that Renesas Electronics, the factory that manufactures the eDRAM for the Wii U was in financial trouble due to not enough production for Nintendo and the Wii U. The factory was expected to close thanks to sluggish sales of the Wii U, but if recent sources are correct, Sony could be buying the factory at Tsuruoka.

This likely won’t have any repercussions for Nintendo even if the chip were to stop being manufactured at the plant, but now if the sale does go through at least the factory won’t have to close down completely.

I.. Don’t think the factory still makes it do they? I was sure Nintendo moved to another company.

    • D Moness

I think so as well, think that happened months ago already.

  • Elitepwnsface

maybe this will help produce for playstations as well

  • NintenScience

    Oh no…

    • Miles “Tails” Prower

      Oh no is right.

      • NintenScience

        Hello, @disqus_xoScthy1Ak:disqus.

        • Miles “Tails” Prower

          Well hello, NintenScience. 🙂

          • SkyStormXD

            Hello everyone!

          • Miles “Tails” Prower

            Hello to you too!

          • DarkLegacy

            Hello, Tails!

  • Wayne Beck

lol Can Sony really afford to be purchasing random hardware manufacturers?

    • Laud

What would they gain from it? Are they expecting to bring up their stocks of ps4 by manufacturing more? They aren’t going to sell that easy..

      • C4

Sony produces all kinds of devices 😉 Relying on other manufactors is not always the best, I think the Renesas story tells this, Nintendo had to find other plants in that case.

  • CEObrainz

Are Sony in a position where they can make large purchases like this? In any case wouldn’t Nintendo just move somewhere else with all the money they have, it doesn’t seem to be too much of a problem.

    • TheAquacharger

No. Sony currently is hiring Bain Capitol to help their money troubles. They’ve had to sell two of their main HQ buildings to stay a float, cut a lot of jobs, and end production of a few product lines.

      • CEObrainz

I see, didn’t know about Bain Capitol but it’s good to know that Sony still have some assets to hold onto.

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

To be honest, maybe nintendo is struggling, but they are far away from failure, xbox and playstation lies closer to failure then nintendo, not saying that they are failure, but its just gives a perpective.

    • bobbybangin

Nintendo isn’t struggling. The Wii U is struggling. Nintendo won the last gen marathon and the 3DS is thriving.

  • Lil J Moore

Huh. whatever suits them I guess

  • Rinslowe

I swear I’ve only ever been to Dual Shockers once. It didn’t mean anything, honest.

    • NintenScience

  • bobbybangin

Sony was just downgraded to Junk Bond status. They have announced a restructuring plan called ‘One Sony’. I don’t see this fitting into their plans.

  • sharlo galmo

Of course they want to buy it, the powerpc cpu and edram from the wiiu is 5times faster then the ps4 cpu…alot of peeps hating on the wiiu and saying that the cpu is weak, but they don’t know that it is alot faster then the ps4 and Xboxone….

    • RyuNoHadouken

      slap yourself for telling lies

Not sure how much this guy should be believed. For starters RISC vs CISC has little to do with amount of memory needed. When done right, most game memory should be textures, and that’s not going to change based on RISC. There is a change when you go from 32bit memory addressing that handles 2 gigs just fine to 64 bit addressing that handles more. 32 bit memory addressing is faster, but 64 bit is the only option when you start looking at much over 2 gigs(tricks can get you to 4, but they eat the speed benefit). PS4 and Xbone have to have 64bit addressing to have as much memory as they do, and do have a slowdown caused by it. It’s hard to quantify, but if I have one 32bit Integer on the WiiU it takes 32bits to address it and 32bits of memory to hold it, or 64 bits total. The others use 64bits to address it and 32bits to hold it or 96bits total. Both the Xbone and PS4 will waste more memory, but how much of that will eat into the bandwidth is debatable. At worse, they’re wasting 30% – 60% of their memory and bandwidth on excess addressing. That’s actually why they didn’t go for the minimum 4 gigs for 64bit memory since the payout for the upgrade isn’t until 8 gigs. It is also possible to get the Speed boost from having 64bit code with 32bit memory addressing which is what the WiiU should be using. MacOSx is also one of these weird hybrid systems so it’s not unprecedented.

CISC is also more powerful, but not much more powerful than RISC. It’s all a very complicated tech argument that can be simplified to: There is no real way to compare RISC vs CISC.

        • Simon Stevens

I saw this and I believed this 🙂

      • The PowerPC Chip is faster per core than the X86 CPU is true. Not sure about the 5 times part though. The PowerPC chip has a much shorter pipeline so that it can process through data in a shorter time than the X86 CPU.

        • RyuNoHadouken

maybe 7 years ago…AMD outclasses PPC in almost every way now a days….

          • Sure if you are referring to their FX line or even their A-Series APUs but in this case it does not because the Jaguar processor used is a low end low voltage tablet/netbook class processor.. AMD Jaguar and Intel Atom are in the same class and is the 2 cylinder class of processors.

          • RyuNoHadouken

true, true…but the thing of today is: do more with less…you dont need fast clock speeds when you have 8 cores, 4×32 IC loop buffer and more decode stages

      • sharlo galmo

Sony self explain it to you, just watch this video

        • RyuNoHadouken

          you’re a moron

    • Brandon

The wii u is not 5 times faster then ps4 and xbox one if you actually look at the specs then you would see.

      • sharlo galmo

        I mean the CPU……..

The PS4 CPU had 176 bg/s, Xbone 203 bg/s it can be faster when they used de sram, the WiiU around 1000 bg/s because of the combination Edram and the PowerPC chip.

      • Don’t be fooled by those 8 cores. Those cores are basically in the same class as the Intel Atom processor which is a low end netbook and tablet processor. Also I think it has been determined that some of those cores are dedicated to processing the console’s OS and other functions and not all for gaming. Same with the Ram.

I think he is off on his estimates too overall but PER CORE the Wii U CPU is more powerful than the x86 processor in the Twins. The XB1 and PS4 have an edge in the video processing but the Wii is more powerful than it is given credit for.

    • Brandon

I know the wii u cpu is not weak its pretty much the same power as the ps4 and xbox one. The wii u has 3 cores and in the 3 cores it has 3mb of cache and the ps4 and xbox one have 4mb but the wii u just shares them between 3 cores while the ps4 and xbox one have to share with 8. Then each core has a theard, all 3 consoles have a single thread per core cpu, so the wii u has 3 and the other 2 consoles have 8. The wii u does have a great amount of power for its number of cores but not more powerful then its Competitors. And the ps4 and xbox do have faster clock speeds.

      • sharlo galmo

No No No, go and do a research for you’re self, i though the same as what you though, because of the 8core, but then some peeps explain it to me…….. he PS4 CPU had 176 bg/s, Xbone 203 bg/s it can be faster when they used de sram, the WiiU around 1000 bg/s because of the combination Edram and the PowerPC…

      • Justagamer

        Who cares

      • sharlo galmo

Check this, Sony self explain it….

    • HypocritesRROD

Company behind Microsoft’s Kinect sensor sold to Apple for $345 million

    • Mozellergodt

Okey, source please? Edit: I saw the video you linked, and while he seems convincing it doesn’t mean that he know what he is talking about either. What is all boils down to is that most people (including myself) don’t have a clue about computer science. At the end of the day the only way we can do comparisons is by looking at actual games and how good they look on each console.

      • Arobadope

You literally said he sounds convincing but then say he probably doesn’t know what he is talking about simply because YOU don’t know what he is talking about.

Am i the only one who noticed the stupidity in this comment?

        • Mozellergodt

I’m just saying that you should try and keep and open mind for once, you can’t just blindly believe what someone says on Youtube just because you want it to be true. And you’re calling me stupid?

          • Arobadope

The problem with your statement is that this is just cross analyzing what was said by Mark Cerny who I am sure has more credentials than you do, also you yourself said he sounded convincing, you are saying more or less that the dude is right, but because I don’t think he knows what he is talking based on me not knowing anything about comp sci, all we are do are graphical comparisons (which don’t tell anywhere near the full story btw).

            Yes, you are stupid.

          • Mozellergodt

Because someone sounds convincing doesn’t mean what they are saying is true. Your logic is flawed sorry. Point is – the video doesn’t prove anything and you can’t come here and represent it as fact, for all I know it’s just some random “tech” guy ranting in his truck. That you blindly believe what he says says more about your intelligence than mine 😉

    • Barzh

      >the powerpc cpu and edram from the wiiu is 5times faster then the ps4 cpu

      [delusion intensifies]

  • andrewjcole

    First thing I thought. Awkward!

  • sharlo galmo

Just watch this, and then think again why they want to buy it…

  • Coffee

Does this mean people with the old Edram wii us will be worth more?
