Takashi Iizuka, the producer of Sonic Lost world, has announced in an interview that the Wii U version of the game will not feature online multiplayer. The 3DS version of the game will have 4 player racing over the Internet. No clues were given as to why the 3DS version has internet racing and the Wii U version doesn’t, but we’re hoping to hear more about this issue soon.

“The Wii U multiplayer is not on the Internet. It’s basically everyone sitting on the same couch. The 3DS for the first time we’re having 4-player versus racing over Wi-Fi and the Internet.”

It seems as if the developers are treating Sonic Lost World as a party game on the Wii U, instead of offering Internet racing that some might want. What do you think of this development? Would you prefer to see Internet racing on the Wii U version of the game, or are you fine without it? Let us know in the comments below.

SEGA and Nintendo are both in the same boat across the big pond. They still think online multiplayer isn’t worth it, when it would actually be the best thing since sliced bread.

      • The Clockwork Being

Well Nintendo made some of their prime games online but the Online on the Wii sucked too much for some games(Smash Bros: 1 frame per decade) but good for others( Mario kart wii)

      • peeer

Excuse me but you are so wrong about Sega. You seem to forget that Sega was the first company to make a console with online features and online games. Hell, EVEN the Sega Saturn had online games on it…

  • Matt Lambourne

Oh god. Why even bother if you’re just going to half-ass it?

Why? It’s usually the opposite… 3DS has no Wifi but has local and vice versa… odd choice Nintendo. Why does Nintendo usually shy away from online multiplayer? I feel as if Mario Kart and Smash Bros are the only Nintendo franchises that include online multiplayer…

    • claudio garcia

When is the summer update coming?

    • The Clockwork Being

ITs not Nintendo its SEGA’s decision. NOT NINTENDO

      • WHYYY

Nintendo is publishing the game and Nintendo is aiding Sega in developing the game.

        • The Clockwork Being

I dont think so the game is being made by Sonic Team and i havent read anywhere that Nintendo was aiding in the developpement

        • peeer

Sega is the publisher, not Nintendo. It is a 3rd party game, not a 1st or 2nd party.

      • Seth Callahan

Sega gave us online mp in Sonic Racing. Do it again, here.

      • sdmac200600

But Nintendo can tell Sega to put online in the Wii U version…

        • peeer

Like I said on the other reply to you, Nintendo don’t need to dictate that. It would be stupid to do that. Despites that I hate it that Sega made that decision as much as you, and probably even more than you. I really don’t see why Nintendo should dictate Sega or any game publishers to use Online on their systems.

          • sdmac200600

I don’t hate their decision. I couldn’t give a flying fucks if it was online. Sonic is not a multiplayer game but it’s retarded for Nintendo to not tell Sega to make both versions online when this wouldn’t fly on Sony’s systems.

  • claudio garcia

When is the summer update coming?

  • claudio garcia

    summer update nintendo now? maybe?

    • Fred

I’d like to know as well

      • claudio garcia

I mean they never even mentioned it during E3. The only mentioned it once and said it was coming in the summer. Well Nintendo look outside it’s summer.

        • claudio garcia

        • Elem187

They said the last one was scheduled for “spring”… well they sent out the update the last week of Spring…. So I’m guessing, the last day of Summer you will see the second update.

  • claudio garcia

Ashley you guys are doing a great job! I searched on these others website which are known for having on-time articles but niether have this and the other article about the petion! And you have great tone in your articles. Other wii u staff members (not going to mention names) need to do what your doing!

    • Seth Callahan

nintendolife.com is a good one to check out.

    • sdmac200600

I seen this on gonintendo last night.

  • Antar Rodríguez

i wish we could have both local and online multiplayer

  • Ony

  • Mario

Why no online multiplayer on WiiU? It doesn’t really make sense.

  • samwise

Doesnt matter to me, I play games for the entertainment not the online functions.

  • Michael Jurado

I think it’s a great idea after all multiplayer is meant for everyone to share an experience together but with handhelds online is needed … Catch up monster hunter a game that’s some what ass backwards with its 3ds online system and what not

  • T.W.

They should make both games have online capabilities, what are they thinking? Save some money by going the cheap route on the Wii U version? What a load of crap. It’s 2013, ALL multi-player console games should have online connectivity.

    • Guest

3DS version- Multiple copies, multiple consoles, less shared experience. They went with online instead.

Wii U- More of a shared experience, 1 game, multiple controllers, easier to play with others people in the household.

Seems like they went with the more logical decision, still a bummer that there won’t be any online multiplayer for Wii U.

      • Lil J Moore

This is some of the reasons on why people dislike Nintendo. Other then the Mario sports (Brawl, Strikers, and Kart) The games get boring to quick without Online play. Having a killer online is needed in some games and can help sells. Friends would like to play with each other on the WiiU and Nintendo needs to take advantage of it.

        • Kaihaku

The Wii U has the perfect hardware for local style online multiplayer – there’s a camera and microphone built into the gamepad – but Nintendo refuses to make use of it. So frustrating, I want to play games with my brother who now lives on the other side of the country while being able to see his ugly face.

        • The Clockwork Being

          Sega decide this not Nintendo-

          • sdmac200600

But Nintendo can tell Sega to make it online for the Wii U. It’s on their system. Not Sega’s.

          • peeer

Nintendo don’t have to dictate other video games publishers to mandatory use online. Thats the publisher’s decisions, not Nintendo’s. I don’t see the point in doing that kind of dictation either. o_O

          • sdmac200600

So Sony and Microsoft can but Nintendo can’t? If Sega tried to pull this shit with the PS4 and Vita, you know damn well Sony would tell Sega to make the PS4 version online also so why can’t Nintendo do that?

          • peeer

I don’t know where you take your sources from… I have never seen anything stating that Sony and Microsoft is forcing all 3rd party devellopers to mandatory use online multiplayer gameplay in all their games.

Since they don’t even do it on all their own first party games themselves… lol

          • sdmac200600

Microsoft forces developers to make all games voice chat available so why wouldn’t they have online….My point in saying that was to show this wouldn’t be the case if the Vita and PS4 was getting Sonic Lost Worlds…

          • peeer

I think you are miss-interpreting Kinect voice chat commands with voice chatting online in games here. When you are stating something like that why don’t you point links indicating your sources? It’d be easier for others that reads this, before it starts false rumours or something like that.

          • sdmac200600

I wasn’t talking about the Kinect voice commands. I was talking about regular old voice chat. I can’t give links because if you tye in “Microsoft” together with “required” or “mandatory” you get nothing but old articles talking about mandatory 24 hour check-ins on the xbox one and required to be connect to the internet on xbox one but I know for a fact that voice chat and online has to be integrated into every game in some way with the xbox brands.

          • peeer

Facts are what I consume, not what some guy on a news site said in comments. So I really don’t see the point that you are talking about it again. Especially after I told you to not state anything that you can’t provide links to support your statements. :/

          • sdmac200600

Find you search for it then and tell me if you get past any of the Xbox one bull…….

          • peeer

If I didn’t searched about it I wouldn’t have been telling you to provide those links in the first instance…. >_<

          • sdmac200600

So you know it isn’t possible to find a link through all the BS Xbox 1 articles. I’m done with this conversation.

          • peeer

Impossible? I wouldn’t say that. It was most than likely something you miss-read or something. I don’t see why you keep believing that you can convince me without facts. See, I have been following Xbox One and PS4 news from the first announcement days to today. I have never ever read or hear anything like that before, its the first time with you talking about it.

      • Seth Callahan

I see why they did it. The mystique of Wii U is its potential for unique local MP experiences. But seriously, add online as well. Both are great for different reasons.

I think of it like the Wii U controller arrangement. One can play several games with the gamepad, pro controller, classic controller, wiimore/nunchuk, or wiimote by itself. Please, give us the same degree of excellent options for multiplayer.

    • kevin nun—-

Some of us are unfortunate to have non-gamer family members, it would be nice if they added online.

  • Elem187

No buy no buy no buy…. Terrible. As much as I love my 3DS, its just not comfortable playing online games on it, maybe its just me.
Wii U would be perfect to have online multiplayer.

  • Lil J Moore

Online MP adds big replayability with games like this. The WiiU needs more online play if it wants to get more 3rd party support. Plus most people like to play online now in days. The WiiU needs to take chances with it’s online features. Plus I would love to have MP in Sonic Lost worlds.

  • Samuel Mungy

There’s one way around getting 3rd party developed games on the Wii U without the developer’s even making it for the Wii U. OnLive. Nintendo should partner with those guys to get OnLive running on the Wii U. Although some people with slow internet access will not be able to, at least a good amount of people will have access to all the multiplatform games as well as Nintendo games. This service can bring what IGN calls ‘Next Gen’ graphics onto the Wii U without it having to process much. C’mon, even the Ouya has it.

    • Samuel Mungy

Someone should start a petition 😉 it is, as they say, the year of petitions.

  • tronic307

    No online?
    I’ll buy it for $29!

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

… this doesnt make any sense at all….

  • Dell Goodman

It should be down to the user to how they want to use their games. Shouldn’t be forced offline for multiplayer and forced online modes. Should have the best of both worlds.

  • peeer

Now that is funny and weird at same time. Suporting a handheld’s online gameplay before suporting a home console for online gameplay. I wonder whats their reason for this.

  • Paul

Until the install base for the console is driven more i can see this trend continuing. Perhaps it’s because there wouldn’t be enough ppl online to play with currently.

  • The Clockwork Being

”It seems as if the developers are treating Sonic Lost World as a party game on the Wii U, instead of offering Internet racing that some might want.”

Ashely I honestly couldnt have said it better. Not putting online on Wii was something acceptable since for some games the online was terrible./ But the Wii U is fully capable of putting online way better than the 3DS i would say.

  • EgC_Awake

$39.99 and it’ll be in my collection. Anything more and it’ll just be a rent.

  • Aaron Barton

Last night my little sister asked me to play Sonic Adventure 2 with my brother to see who was better. When I mastered that game, my brother was just born. The younger, more recent Sonic graduate edged me out. Competition is fun in Sonic games.

Well, have any kind of technological or design advances happened since this 12 year old game came out that bids to offer anything new or convenient to how you can play the game? Is it possible to enjoy a game of Sonic with my family without driving to my mothers house every time?

It’s only 2013, of course not! Check back in year 2020.

Edit: Just have to lay this out. I been a Sonic fan my entire life, and this game looks great. But I’m really at the point where I’m going to start voting with my dollars. Provide good features and service, I’ll gladly pay. Halfass it AGAIN, and I feel guilty supporting them. I might check out a friends copy, or something, but I’m tired of paying for incomplete games.

  • EFFtendo

It sucks that I am so loyal to Nintendo first parties… I would have sold my Wii U along time ago… I need to just give up and stop supporting. I swear Nintendo is the ex girlfriend I can’t stop banging!

    • thedeciderU

      bahahaha wait, meee toooo

  • Jon

makes sense, doesn’t look like the type of game with online.

  • Wanderlei

Some games suit local multi player not online.

  • Michael DeVore

I’d prefer Online Multiplayer, but that’s my problem with Every Wii U game to date. ZombiU, NSMBU, Nintendo Land and all games with local multiplayer need Online Multiplayer. I don’t understand why devs think that if it has local multiplayer it doesn’t need online multiplayer.

    • Nostalgic_Chaos

I agree. I made a little rant video on this topic on my new youtube video. Would love to hear your thoughts and others peoples as well. Why would would the 3DS version have online and not this version, doesn’t make sense: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_RPN6SbzM4

    • Kaihaku

Agreed, especially since the Wii U gamepad could offer a superior online multiplayer experience to other consoles simply by integrating Wii U Chat. I would love to be able to play a game and glance down at the gamepad to see my little brother’s face after I kicked/saved his butt. Okay, okay, usually it’s the other way around but you get the point. The gamepad has a camera and microphone built-in…why won’t developers make the most intuitive use of them?

  • slade6alpha

Nintendo… my body’s Reggie for another ND. Hopefully we get one in July. I want to know more about some games, some surprises, Yoshi, updates, unified accounts… E3 left me thirsty for more!

  • Kaihaku

I love local multiplayer but the people I use to play with now live all over the country. The Wii U is the perfect console for loyal style online multiplayer – the gamepad has a camera and microphone built-in! Include local multiplayer – show my brother’s ugly face on the second screen so I can see his expression when I clobber him just like I use on the Genesis – best of both worlds. This is the number one feature I want for the virtual console but I’d settle for having it in a game like Sonic Lost World…instead it sounds like the 3DS version will be the one to go for if I want to play with distant friends and family.

  • Johny

im getting the game purely for single player and dont care for multiplayer (as i didnt in sonic colors) but it certanly is weird -.-

  • Ducked

Why the heck do they need online multi-player? Why can’t people just get actual friends and play in the same room for crying out loud.

    • Agent721

Why cant we have the option of both?

      • Ducked

Because life can’t be that good

    • CyanideInsanity

No online matchmaking is acceptable, albeit slightly annoying for some, but it sounds as if there is absolutely no online play, which is ridiculous since the 3ds version does.

Its not always convenient to have to be in the same room. There’s no way in hell I’m hiking an hour and a half to someone’s house in 100 degree weather.

      • Ducked

Hiking, does everyone live in the mountains now?

        • CyanideInsanity

Dude, hiking doesn’t only have to do with mountains.

          • Ducked

            Or does it?

    • Bomberman

So you’re telling me I should have my friends drive 30 minutes to my house; waste gas, just to play multiplayer game, when they should be able to do it the comfort of their own home? What is this 1995?

      • Ducked

If more people had a life, then they wouldn’t need to lay down on there couch and play video games everyday 🙂

        • Bomberman

This is not about people having a life, it’s about a game where the multiplayer should be online. What does laying on a couch have to do with anything?

          • Ducked

            LOL U SO FUNNY 🙂

  • Quicksilver88

I am not even much of an online fan so I don’t really give a crap, but with that said I baffled at why companies keep doing this with WiiU games? For god sakes online multiplayer has been the norm now for almost 10 years but Nintendo fans are like living in the past. My guess is it costs money to support servers for online and Sega must be expecting this game to sell like crap and doesn’t want to support hosting costs….same thing happened with SniperV2….its not just about the game its about the back end costs. What can be great about multiplayer is it can add great replay ability to a game so improves its value. Whats bad about not having it is it make WiiU seem about two generations old…..what so you want to bet after 6 months and complaints of poor sales they put this game out on other systems and add online.

  • Interesting how the 3DS has online play but the Wii U version doesnt

  • Joyous Killer

    But i don’t have any friends….

  • Cubester_64

It is probably just for the local multiplayer. IDK

  • ejownz6

They might as well have not put networking features on the console.

I don’t want online multiplayer in Sonic, but I did want it in New Super Mario Bros, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, New Super Luigi, Super Mario 3D Land, etc.

Sega can make it’s own decisions, but why Nintendo doesn’t add online multiplayer to any of its games other than SSB and MK is beyond me.

I think I’ll blow my brains out if they make a Metroid Prime sequel with no online multiplayer.

  • SuperSonicBrawler

Sonic’s never been a multiplayer game, so I’m not at all disappointed with the announcement. Don’t get me wrong, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle had a fun 2-player mode, but it certainly wasn’t the main reason people bought the game. I do question why they would bother including it on the 3DS version if they weren’t going to put it on the Wii U version. The Wii U version will definitely be the definitive version, so it seems confusing as to why they wouldn’t include something as big as online multiplayer. Nintendo needs to get it through their heads that “sitting on the couch” co-op, while still fun, was rendered obsolete by online multiplayer. Hardly anyone has time for it anymore. Online is just more convenient, and the sooner Nintendo learns to better incorporate it into their home console games, the better. And yes, I’m aware that technically SEGA owns Sonic, but considering their recent partnership with Nintendo, they might as well be calling all the shots. I mean, just look at the Deadly Six. It’s like the monsters from Sonic Unleashed and the Koopalings did fusion or something.

    • disqus_sgtob6da3X

Uh, this is Sega call. Not Nintendo. If Sega choose online player then they would. but as with Sonic games not really have online or muiltplayer, I can agree with.

  • FlyingBoat

i dont care about online. and i highly doubt people will think of it like a party game. its sonic with stages. a party game has four player simultaniously blowing up balloons, etc

  • Hairee Pothead

It now the opposite of Monster Hunter where Home had Online and not handheld.

  • icedearthaholic

I’ll definitely be getting this game one way or another, it would be cool to have on-line multiplayer, but not entirely necessary.

  • Gabe Hoffman

And not a single fuck was given that day

  • $41809923

You know, all these Sonic discussions are good and all. But do you know what these discussions need? Gligar13Vids. XD
