Today Sega announced the release date for its two upcoming Sonic Boom games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is the Wii U game and it will be released on November 18. Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal is the Nintendo 3DS game, which features a completely different story from the main Wii U game and it will be available on November 11.

Earlier today we saw Sega release new concept artwork of some of the characters from the game, including NPCs that you can interact with throughout the game. Be sure and check out those shots to see what you’re in store for when the game releases in November. Are you excited to play Sonic Boom on both the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U? Let us know in the comments!

  • SmashFinale

    Liking the boxart.

  • ActivesiN

the boxart is more interesting then the game

    • Comments

It really is, can’t wait to not play.

      • 00EpicGamer00

For some reason, your profile pic really matches your comment and name. It’s like Sonic knows how dumb the comment section can get, lol.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          Too true.

        • Comments

It really does, now that you said.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Probably won’t if Guile takes Sega to court over the name.

    • Rich Garriques

you being on a nintendo site trolling over a game you have never played is more interesting then your stupid name.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Just as you go on about games you never played on a non-Nintendo platform. Correct? Keep in mind, you and others like yourself, bring that topic up on a Nintendo site as well. Just as interesting. Have a good one.

      • Rinslowe

Well to be fair the game looks pretty average. Either that or the main stage used for the E3 demo was a poor choice. The remaining area’s shown where you’re running through a more traditional stage on rails looks uninspiring as well sadly.
But that’s just my opinion. Definitely a wait and see kind of title…

        • If it’s true what they said about it’s coop mode that lets one player play an unleashed game on the gamepad, letting 2 characters simultaneously play through different routes, then this would be so awesome, I’d initially buy that game. But maybe I misunderstood something?

          • Rinslowe

            Maybe you’re right…
I have no idea about it. Would be pretty neat.

          • I think they talked about something like that at some E3 presentation. You’ll play CooP mode and then you’ll come to a section, where only specific characters would be able to proceed so you’ll have to split up to meet again later. Interesting enough I think.

          • Rinslowe

Yeah the idea sounds interesting. Definitely. Just not sure about the rest of the game, lol.
But yeah, if it’s implemented well enough it could be worth checking out.

      • ActivesiN

I have seen enough gameplay for this game to have concerns about it.
it looks boring, and very slow
        and my name is awesome
just because this is a Nintendo site doesn’t mean I am going to say everything about Nintendo and every game on it is AMAZING OMG!!!!!!
that is what an idiot does

  • Hikingguy

Hopefully this is the rise of a fun sonic game.

  • Justin Carlson

I’m glad Sega is still supporting the Wii U. We need more 3rd party developers who don’t give up on a console at the first sign of trouble.

    • Mr Ninty

i think this is the last of the 3 games deal that sega has with nintendo. but i do hope the continue working with nintendo.

ps: when will they make a nintendo/sega that is not a sports game or something.

      • nintendogamer

I would love them to make a game together where it’s not Olympics… I think they’re starting to realize that people are tired of that kinda stuff.

        • Kaihaku

It’s time for a Star Fox / Sonic crossover. Tails McCloud.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I recall more than one sign.

      • Rinslowe

In your tea leaves no less…

    • Michael Hancock

That’s not how supply and demand works.

    • SEGA and Nintendo struck a deal for this, M&S @ the Sochi Olympic Winter Games 2014 and Sonic Lost World.

I’m pretty sure it was Nintendo who made the first move, and SEGA just cashed in on the opportunity. In all honesty, this was a very weak deal. Sonic Colors for instance, was an amazing exlcusive to the Wii and DS. These three titles are sub-par. I bought Lost World even after all the bad reviews, just to see if I would personally be able to deal with its faults. It’s not a bad game, per-say…Nothing goes below Sonic ’06. Yet even so; it certainly didn’t capture me like Colors did. Not at all.

But going back to the point; had this deal not come through, along with Bayo2 – I’m not really sure how much SEGA would be checking for the Wii U right now. They’ve only been supporting it because of exclusive deals made with Nintendo. The only game they’ve actually supported on their own merit so far, was Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

    • first sign of trouble … oooh boy, this is turning out to become a cult here =)

      • Rinslowe

$29.99 a month, membership. Free coffee on Tuesdays and a lifetime of good vibes for beloved Nintendo. What’s not to like about it!

Oh and I almost forgot, they’ll chuck in a full body & head waxing “including those hard to reach places” uh! If you sell your soul to Luigi’s stare..

So… when will you be signing up?

        • When they are putting a fruit-logo on their products, they can count me in ;D

          • Rinslowe

That’s up to he who must not be named…
But you didn’t hear that from me..

          • He’s said to be able to …. stare the life out of disbelievers. I’m afraid I’m too deep into this shit already …

        • Cubester_64

Where do you sign up? Also, can the coffee be replaced with hot cocoa? I am on a strict hot cocoa- only diet for the next century (or whenever I decide to stop being mad at the GameCube logo for being so hard to draw. Whichever happens first.)

          • Rinslowe

It’s kind of difficult. Because it is said to first ask something of Luigi, you must look him in the eye while doing so. However looking Luigi in the eye is to bear witness to his stare. And it is said to witness his stare, is to court death.
I can ask admin for an application. But you can ask for the cocoa yourself. If you don’t mind?…

    • LordiMcKill

We’re still not get Alien Isolation though.

  • Unless this turns out amazing (which doesn’t seem the case according to early impressions), it’s set to die with that release date. After Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, possibly before or too close to Captain Toad and SSB… it’s going to be a hard sell.

    • nintendogamer

I agree that release date is a bad one. But, never base your opinions on the complete game from early impressions. You’d be surprised at how much can change from announcement to release.

      • Seeing how these impressions are recent, I doubt it.

  • Alex

Sonic Adventure 3 can make me happy

    • Sdudyoy

Speaking of Sonic adventure, I just played through that game last night, and I started SA2 today.

      • Alex

SA2 was my favorite game on dreamcast, i’ve spent so many sleepless nights trying to get all the emblems and raise chao to win in all chao races 🙂

        good memories!

    • nintendogamer

I’ve realized that the reason Sega/ Sonic Team won’t make Sonic Adventure 3 is because they’re afraid to. If the fans aren’t pleased (which they never are), the fan base would completely fall apart and Sega/ Sonic Team would suffer even worse with sales.

      • Jason

Yeah, that’s the same reason they won’t make a sequel to Skies of Arcadia.

        • Kaihaku

A contributing factor to that fear is that most of the development team for Skies of Arcadia left Sega a long time.

      • LordiMcKill

It’s not the first time its happened though, disasters like Sonic 06 and the Story Book games and also the design flaws like Unleashed and Shadow have left the community divided, some losing faith in Sega altogether only to redeem themselves with Colours and Generations and Lost World.

Personally I’d like to see Sonic Adventure 3 for the 25th anniversary (which is only 2 years away) and since Boom is being made a external company, Sonic Team are probably ramping up development for the next major Sonic game in time for 2016 just in time for the anniversary.

    • Merry_Blind

Sonic Unleashed IS Sonic Adventure 3, but instead of having shitty friends, it has a shitty werehog, otherwise the structure of the rest of the game is very similar to Sonic Adventure 1. I believe it’s called Sonic World Adventure in Japan and/or Europe.

      • TehEngineer

        Just Japan. I think.

        • Merry_Blind

          yeah I think so too.

      • nintendogamer

Yup, but fans will never be satisfied until they have a GOOD game with “SONIC ADVENTURE 3” on the box art.

      • SmashFinale

Actually, you are off on that one.
Sonic 06 is more akin the Sonic Adventure than Sonic Unleashed. And just because one of the other regions gets a different title doesn’t make it more likely that it is the sequel.
Sonic 06 had multiple playable characters whereas Sonic Unleashed only had one. There is a hub world in both unleashed and 06 but 06’s hub worlds connected to each other just as Sonic Adventure’s did. The gameplay between 06 and both Adventures are strikingly similar on top of that while Unleashes was a whole new concept in the Sonic Series at the time.

        • Merry_Blind

Could be, I haven’t played Sonic 06, but I’m pretty sure I read somewhere a long time ago that SEGA said Sonic Unleashed was indeed supposed to belong to the ‘Adventure’ series.

but yeah, I could definitely be wrong, Sonic 06 does look even more similar to the Adventure series, though I don’t think it’s really far-fetch given the similarities between Unleashed and Adventure.

      • Nope.
Sonic 06′ is the true “SA3”. They took practically every element from the original game and tried to re-create it for the “next generation”. But as we know, trying and doing are quite different.

Sonic Unleashed was originally gonna use Adventure’s formula, but they modified it later on.

        • Merry_Blind

  • Ducked

Box art looks great! Too bad the game doesn’t.

    • matthew garcia

Is this kind of make or break thing for Sega or are they doing ok?

      • Merry_Blind

Pretty sure they’re doing ok. Haven’t heard of SEGA being in trouble.

        • matthew garcia

Yeah I never hear to much on Sega financially

          • Merry_Blind

            me neither XD

      • Nintendo bailed Sega out when they left the console business hence why Nintendo and Sega are good friends. Sega is in no troubles. If they were Nintendo would save them once again or just buy them.

        • matthew garcia

          Huh I didn’t know that

          • As the saying goes, you learn something new every day.

          • matthew garcia

            That’s for sure

    • Daniel Gonzalez

      No arguments here.

    • Dark Lord Sauron

judging a game that isnt out -_-

      • Comments

He said it doesn’t look good, not that isn’t going to be good. The same could be said to who is claiming this game “is going to be great”. In my opinion, it looks “bleh!”.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Exactly. Many games can not look good, and turn out to be worth a purchase. The opposite applies as well.

          • Comments

True, especially when it’s related to upcoming Sonic games. It is very variable.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

He has a right to, just as you do. I’m pretty sure it’s not killing you by any means.

    • Phoenix Maybe

Too true. The game looks mediocre at best. The “fast” sections look dull and the exploration/combat sections look…okay.

  • The first videos of the game actually looked pretty sweet to me might give it a shot but I fear that won’t be until early 2015 due to Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 1+2 and Smash Brothers.

  • Merry_Blind

Like others have said, this is a very bad release date for this game. Too many GREAT games are coming out around that time, so it will be overshadowed easily. Not only that, but the game doesn’t look that good, so it would fare much better if it was released during the Winter, where there are less games being released usually.

    • Squirrel09

Well they probably wanted it out before Christmas… There are sooo many games coming fall/winter we’re all going to miss some… plus kids are going to go crazy for sonic.

      • Merry_Blind

Yeah I guess for kids there is only Smash Bros. coming, so I can see it being popular for them.

    • ? There is Pokemon and Sonic in November…what else? Oh yeah the next COD….whoop dee doo.

      • Wren Justin Umlauf

Smash Bros as well. If not in November than it most likely will be in December which is pretty close.

        • Still December is fine. And lets not forget Captain Toad Treasure Tracker.

      • Merry_Blind

I was talking about Fall/the Holiday season, not just November. Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors and Smash Bros. will easily overshadow Sonic Boom.

        • LOL Hyrule Warriors is utter shit. Pong rapes it. The rest I agree with you.

          • Merry_Blind

Still not sure about it, could be shit, but it might fine too.

          • Thats your choice. But I don’t know a single person who is interested in it lol. We all agree its insulting to the Zelda franchise.

          • Darius

Well I’m interested so there’s ur one and its not a Zelda game but a crossover

          • 00EpicGamer00

I’m interested in it as well. I’m not necessarily jumping off the walls interested but I do want to try it when it comes out. I honestly don’t understand the hate for Hyrule Warriors. The argument that I absolutely hate the most, is “dur hur! It’s insulting to the Zelda franchise.” Who cares!? It’s a goddamn video game. People act like video games are a religion or something.

          • I meant people I actually know in real life, not on forums where human beings say the stupidest things and don’t know what they want or what they are even talking about.

          • triplegamer3K .

            hello,i’m interested,have we met?

          • No we haven’t.

          • triplegamer3K .

I would love to be friends. My interests include:
            Hyrule Warriors and having opinions.

    • johnny

      u r full of crap

      • Merry_Blind

        lol wut?

    • Justin McMurry

Let’s not forget the TV show that will accompany this. It’s sure to get the chitlins excited and as an avid cartoon lover myself, I’ll definitely be getting it. There’s more going for this game than first thoughts suggest and with it being the most promising 3D sonic game in recent memory, I don’t think it’ll be overshadowed too much. Given the right marketing scheme of course. But I expect their campaign for this game to be HUGE especially with the show. We’ll see come November 🙂

  • getting pretty excited for this game, hopefully it will not be Sonic 14, which is probably low because of how much time they worked on this game

  • iamserious

Damn it too many games coming out at the end of the year! I can’t get all of them! Wish they would spread the release dates a bit more. Maybe Bayo or Warriors will be released in Sept-Oct? If not then I don’t know which game I’d get. Plus Smash, Capn Toad, Disney 2.0 and Trap Team, is also coming out near the end of the year! :-/

    • Hyrule Warriors is September I believe and Bayonetta is October.

    • 00EpicGamer00

You actually want Disney Infinity 2.0? I mean, it’s great that you might want it but in my opinion (after playing the first one), the game is just…..Meh. I’d prefer Skylanders Trap Team over Disney 2.0. Just my 2 cents. :/

      • iamserious

Actually I went with Disney Infinity 1.0 instead of Swap Force the first time around and I really liked it. Maybe this time I’ll go with Trap Team. Unless it would be more beneficial for me to stay with Disney…

  • Rich Garriques

wow another game to add to the list of wii u games coming out this year. glad its sonic , i love this game. dont care about the crying sonic fans , iv always been a big sonic fan i dont care about reviews on sonic games. mario games have always been the same and its like sonic gets treated like the ugly duckling every time a game comes out , either know its games were all the same as marios. and be totally honest mario gets treated a lot better then sonic does either know sonic and his series is a lot better then marios.

  • bistricky

The more release dates, the better …… now lets get the release date for Super Smash Bros., Captain Toad, Falling Skies: The Game and the amiibo collection …… and maybe, just maybe seeing Watch Dogs U before December.

  • Kaihaku

I guess that I’ll get this instead of Project CARs in November…since Namco decided that Project CARs isn’t coming to the Wii U in November. 🙁

  • This boxart makes me cringe.

Usually Sonic boxarts are actually really well done, but this isn’t something I’d want to flaunt as a part of my game collection. For instance, the logo style they used for “Rise of Lyric” is just terrible, and DOES NOT match the theme at all. Looks like something more relatable to Ice Age with the color and font-choice.

Tails doesn’t really have an expression on his face. Amy looks alright. Knuckles is probably the best looking thing on this entire boxart. Sonic’s expression and pose makes him look more like he’s peering into a mystery door, than pulling something towards him with his “Enerbeam”.

Overall, this is NOT an appealing boxart in my eyes, and from the E3 gameplay videos – it certainly doesn’t look to be very convincing on that end either. I remember watching the very first trailer and thinking “Wow! This looks awesome!” But that new E3 trailer and gameplay footage just about ruined this for me. Now this boxart has really turned me off. :-/

    • Chase U

Who cares about the box art honestly? I care to SOME extent but it all in all almost doesn’t matter, as long as the game is good!

  • Miles “Tails” Prower

I for one hope that the game is fun for everyone, and hopefully it gets some good reviews! Best of luck Sonic! Now that I think about it. I’ve yet to see any co-op game play.

  • LordiMcKill

So lets see, this autumn and winter I’ve got Smash Bros, Sonic Boom, Bayonetta 1&2, Hyrule Warriors, Watch Dogs and Cap Toads Treasure Tracker all to contend with? Man, the Wii U had only two major releases so far this year and now we’re getting 5+!

I’m just glad Nintendo’s finally ramping up the release schedule.

  • steveb944

I think we’re going to be sorely disappointed with this one. I bought Lost World solely for playing the Zelda DLC, other than that I pick up the game and can’t finish more than one level because I get annoyed and bored.

There were a couple Wii Sonic games in my collection, the originals were great, but now Sonic is meh. I hope I’m wrong tho as I want to support third party as much as I can

  • FutureFox

Sonic looks like tired actor in the last throes of his action-adventure career.

  • Andrew Clear

When I watched footage of the Wii U Sonic Boom last night, I was actually excited. It definitely looks different, more like a Sonic action game. I am definitely going to pick this up. I normally don’t care much for Sonic.

  • RARE

I want to be excited for this game but not even the live demos couldn’t generate excitement for me. At least with Lost World watching the E3 demos made the game look fun.

  • About time we had another new Sonic game and Sonic Boom looks like a great start. Hope this one puts Sonic back on the map as one of the best video games no the Wii U.
