A new blog post from SEGA has detailed new information about the upcoming Sonic Boom for both Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. Both games will offer completely different experiences with unique storylines instead of the Nintendo 3DS version being a dumbed down copy of the console version. The Wii U game’s full title is Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and makes use of Crytek’s engine in order to render details.

The Wii U version is being developed by Big Red Button and will feature intense combat and new abilities like the Enerbeam, giving players a new way to navigate the world. The Nintendo 3DS version is being developed by Sanzaru Games and will be titled Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. This standalone game will share all the lore and characters from the Sonic Boom universe, but players will be able to experience gameplay as the recently unveiled character Sticks.

SEGA America’s chief content officer Hiroyuki Miyazaki is especially pleased with the direction of both games, stating:

“This is a new Sonic, with gameplay built on action-adventure and collaborative play. They are unlike any previous games featuring the iconic blue blur. We are looking forward to our first hands-on showcase at E3 for fans old and new alike to experience the exploration, combat and new moves for the entire team.”

Will you be picking up both versions of Sonic Boom?

I’m glad they are breathing new life into the sonic series. πŸ™‚

  • Sdudyoy

Whoo, I’m excited for these games, the Wii U one is the one I’m looking forward to, I can’t wait!

  • uPadWatcher

I’m looking forward at purchasing the Wii U version. Rise of Lyric looks like it’s gonna be a fun Sonic title. Powered by CryEngine, I would love to see MORE of the game play next Tuesday.

    • Rinslowe

ho ho ho. Next Tuesday…. Time flies when you’re having fun!

  • ActivesiN

I am cautiously optimistic about this game

  • bistricky

It really looks like Sega is making sure that this game is going to be very good. More positive news.

    • Nothing5555

I really hope so as there has not been any 3d Sonic that was truly outstanding.

      • BL4CKSH33P

        um sonic adventure 1

        • Ehhh.

Debatable. Once Sega starts cutting the fluff from their games, like Generations and Colors, we get good experiences, short and simple, but fun. Conversely, Lost World has too much extra stuff and experimentation that does lessen the fun.

          • BL4CKSH33P

I loved that game as a kid. πŸ™

          • I love it now. I still own it. But I stopped playing at Big the Cat’s first level, and I loathe most of Sonic Adventure 2, when I was expecting it to be the greatest game ever made.

      • I enjoyed Heroes

      • Geckoblade64

What about Sonic adventure? I loved that game when I was younger, and still find it a blast today!

        • Nothing5555

I agree with you on Sonic adventure being a great game but I don’t recall it “redefining” the Sonic franchise in 3D. A good example of a redefining a franchise in “3D” would be Metroid Prime.

          Anyways RIP Dreamcast πŸ™

          • Geckoblade64

It’s really just the nostalgia for me

  • Yousif Alromaithi

Nintendo is bringing their A games. My friend from Brazil, loves Sonic will definitely enjoy this.

  • That guy who hates Spike

Just as I did with Sonic Colors, and Sonic Lost World, I’m be buying both versions of Sonic Boom.

    • Phoenix Maybe

At least now I know I wasn’t the only one who got Colors for DS.

      • Xeon2

Colors on the DS was freaking awesome, just as good as the wii version in my opinion

  • Rich Garriques

looks like the game will be really good

  • I’ll probably pick up Wii U instead of 3DS, my 3DS already has tons of games I didn’t even got started on πŸ˜› But my Wii U needs more love besides browsing here, on the net and Youtube.

  • DΓ‘ibhΓ wotshissurname

It may be good, but the burning question is: How fast?

  • Kobe

Im realy exicited for both of these games. The only Sonic games Ive played are Unleashed and Colors but I dont realy like the Sonic Colors style. This is something different and I will definitley buy both

  • Willie Crespo

    The screenshots are really nice.

And thank god the character models look like horrid garbage.

  • LevenThumps

The more I hear about this game, the more excited I get. This game is looking to be a great Nintendo exclusive.

  • Kobe

There is leaked video footage of the game. And yes, it is a real leak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNkDV_e-t0k

    • Kobe
      • Blue Hernandez

They would throw in crystals that look like they’re from Crash Bandicoot lol sneaky ex-naughty dog employees! Haha I can’t wait for this game and the Wii U version.

  • BrotherDump

So much good news from nintendo lately I’m loving it πŸ˜€

  • Pablo LavΓn

Please, just don’t try to focus on speed like Lost World tried.. that wasn’t good.
Focus on the ”open world” style.. And have some cool parts with the speed, but don’t make it obligatory for moving.

  • I actually saw this when I went to CVG, so I was like:

So I went and looked at it, and i have to say:

    Two thumbs up.

    • Rinslowe

In that last pic. I have to ask… Is he wasted? Lets get this off the air. We can’t have the fans seeing sonic like this…
How long has he been on the hard stuff??

      • He developed a massive addiction. He managed to work with it for Adventure 1 and 2, but it started to show at Heroes. He didn’t get clean until 2010, or so.

        • Rinslowe

Thank goodness he’s sorted himself out then. That can go only one of two ways…

    • Cubester_64

What is with sonic in the first pic?

      • You see, Sonic fans actually do quite a lot with Sonic, things that are quite ingenious and entertaining. Even when the games are subpar, and the fanboys moan for the minor part, the few genuine fans that are aware of the quality make it an enjoyable experience overall.

Seriously though, I have no frickin clue.

  • RayMarioSonic

Why couldn’t this just be revealed at E3? Unless they have something even better such as the core Sonic game that was revealed to be worked on in early April.

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog
